Review from Liz M.
I've been through quite a few hair places in NYC and with varying lengths of hair to deal with. I cycle through growing it out, donating it, rocking as short of hair I can muster, and then start growing it again. Unfortunately, with this place, Pantene is going to be out a donation for a little while.
Lindsay makes me so happy. I adore my short hair. She hacked it all and we've been going shorter and shorter ever since. She checks in with me often during a cut- making sure I'm not freaking out. They've been so flexible with my schedule, and are really easy to make a quick appointment. I don't do color, so you would have to ask someone else. -
Review from Neline S.
The first time I came here, I went through a Lifebooker deal and double booked with a co-worker.
When I read that it was next to Hotel on Rivington, I was a bit nervous about the scene since I usually like low key, unpretentious places. However, when I came in the first time, I was greeted by Melinda, who happened to be the Creative Director and offered me water and showed me the array of magazines to look over.
It was a bit crazy due to all the Lifebookers but I felt at ease and comfortable.
After about 10 minutes, I was seated and Melinda asked what I wanted to do with my hair. I showed her Christina Ricci's bob since she kinda has the same facial structure I do (round face) and I really liked her stark bob.
Melinda listened patiently and recommended she make some modifications based on the texture of my hair. I'm pretty laid back with hair as all I wanted was something cool and new.
She was very chatty as we talked about art and trying to find old furniture, while she washed my hair and what kind of products I used.
Afterwards, she started working on cutting six inches off my hair and kept asking if I was ok. I guess women tend to freak out when 6 inches of their hair is gone but not me.
I told her, I'm a wash and go kinda girl and told me this bob would be excellent for my lifestyle. Although, I asked her about styling techniques so we went over the Aveda products. She took a lot of care into blowing out my hair and told me how to properly use conditioner on the ends to stop the greasy look.
The first day, I usually don't think much of my hair however, after I rolled into work the next day, I received so many compliments on how it fit my face. I was a little shock since I've had bobs before but Melinda explained the structure she used by angling the side to give it texture and movement. I really didn't notice it until after a month when I was styling it and I loved the way it moved.
I was still receiving compliments from the haircut a month after from friends telling me that it was really cute that I had to see Melinda in 3 months.
So this past weekend, I saw her again and requested the same style. I felt bad since I booked it for Friday night but she was so accommodating and nice. This time, when she washed my hair, she gave me a little extra Aveda relaxation product and a really nice head massage which felt sooooooo GRRRRRRRRRRRRREAAAT.
Knowing, I would be her last client for the evening, I really appreciated the time she took with me. She could have rushed out and start her weekend but we talked about Midwest (both of us grew up there) and our brothers. I also had to go the bathroom in the middle of the cut, and she was nice enough to walk me to Hotel on Rivington (as the salon does not have facilities so clients use the 2nd floor hotel bathrooms).
So, I received an unexpected treat of seeing parts of the hotel. They had red carpet leading to the elevators and once I arrived to the 2nd Floor, I had some trouble finding the bathroom. Luckily, the 2nd floor is the game room where they had a few people playing pool and asked one of the ladies where it was.
The 2nd floor is rather dark, with lots of oak paneling. For a boutique hotel, I was expecting a lot of clean lines, white furniture since the exterior was aluminum and glass but I guess the sight to see is really the rooftop.
Anyway, I came back and Melinda finished the job. It was well over 8pm (as she had to drive upstate for a wedding but she was really gracious about it). She set me up for another appointment after Labor Day and maybe next time, I'll be more adventurous with highlights. -

Astoria, NY
I have followed Melinda from two salons in Astoria to Platinum. Her color is amazing, and she has a great personality. I have sent countless friends to her and they always are super impressed.
However, I have not gone back since she did my color and cut three weeks before my wedding n 2010. I had four people work on me that day, granted, I was a half hour late, but called in advance to ask if I needed to reschedule. "Nope, come on in". I arrived at 1:30pm on a saturday and left at 5:45pm-- for highlights and a cut and a blow out.
Melinda started, and then had an assistant follow up. In the middle of foils-- she had to take another client. Then I sat waiting for Melinda to be done. The buzzer went off, I told the assistant, the receptionist and Melinda, but after a quick check of one, Melinda said "another 10 mins".
The foils slipped and I had a line right at my hairline. The color was super brassy and she had to add color. Listen, it didn't ruin my wedding. It's just hair. But I started crying. I just wanted her to do great hair, be focused-- like I know she can be.
I think that's my biggest complaint. Melinda isn't focused all the time. She can be, and when she is, she's amazing. Her color is amazing, her cuts last forever, and she treats you right. When she's not focused, it sucks. It's a huge time suck, and really no amount of wine will get your time back. There is usually some small issue with the cut or color, but I get annoyed because I have been in the salon for over 3 hours and just want to get out.
I've given Melinda three chances-- I had a cut with holes in it, I went back. I had a super short cut that "got updated" with a brassy blonde, I went back. But after this, i just can't. I want a great hairdresser who is focused on me when I am paying for my time with her. -

I got a deal from Lifebooker and so got a haircut this past weekend - too bad it wasn't at all what I asked for! My stylist was Ari, and he was nice and everything but he couldn't cut layers the way I wanted them - we went over it after he dried my hair and he really tried to give me what I want, but it got to a point where I just smiled through my teeth and told him it was great, because I could tell he simply couldn't do what I wanted!
So frustrating.
Also, the salon was much smaller than I expected, and the way the washing stations faced the chairs didn't feel luxurious.
Oh well, at least I only paid $35 before tip! -

I got a cut and color from Allison. I was a bit nervous going in since my hair color was virgin, and the other times I'd gone for highlights at other places, I always ended up with some strange streaks or a reddish color (which seems to be what a lot of stylists tend to do for brunettes such as myself). I voiced my concerns to Allison, showed her a picture of Rachel Bilson on the October cover of Women's Health Mag, and Allison assured me that I would get golden blonde results like the cover. The results were fantastic! I felt like a new person (still do). Allison was very thorough with explaining options to me and what techniques she was using along the way. If I had a question, she answered it, and she always made sure I was comfortable. I feel really beautiful and refreshed with my new hair color and cut, and I'm definitely keeping Allison as my go-to stylist.

Don't be fooled. This skinny girl is LAZYEE. So I end up basing a LOT of my decisions, like this one, on how close things are to my apt in Brooklyn.
8 months overdue for a cut and I'm heading to a place called Platinum. Ok, it's called Platinum and it's in the Lower East Side. No part of this equation would normally make me get off the couch and throw on my sensible shoes . But wait! It's also only 20 mins on the F and just a block and a half once I get out of the subway. "Ok," lazy girl says, "I'll risk it." I'm not the most trendy person by ANY means, so I straighten out my poncho and I prepared myself for an Ugly Betty moment, walking into the salon.
But that wasn't the case at all. From the nice guy who greeted me to the dude who cut my hair, it was a really pleasant experience with no snood or 'tude. Hallelujah! Now I don't have to keep making the trek up to near Carnegie Hall to get my hair cut with all the other Upper East Side biddies, like I had been for years.
Peter, my stylist, was very personable without being too chatty and best of all, he gave me a short hair cut that I love, without making me look like my aunt. (No offense, Much love aunt Jane!)
Platinum was the best combination of knowlegable stylists who are on trend and adept at making you look and feel fabulous. I was really impressed at the great shape, movement and volume Peter got out of my heavy, straight, wire-like Asian hair.
Will definitely be going back. -

I arrived at 12:50 for my 1:00 appt, was told I was early so I better go sit down. I thought 10 mins is courteous, not annoying but anyway. There was no wine. I wasn't even offered water. After sitting there for about 25 mins, my stylist found me, and it wasn't the person I'd made the appointment with, that person was on a photo shoot so this gal was covering for her. Fine, but if I had been a regular with the original person I'd be unhappy with that.
I have wavy hair, brought a picture of a long bob I liked. She didn't want to go that short... I did, but took her advice. Told her I'm not too skilled with styling my hair, and I'm starting law school so I wanted something low maintenance but still more polished than my previous long beachy waves.
When I left I liked it, but she had used a round brush to semi-curl my whole head with the blow dryer, which I could never duplicate. Now I'm stuck with a length that makes my hair flip weird so I HAVE to blow dry carefully every time or it looks crazy. At least before it all laid down when I air dried, now that's just not an option. I feel like I didn't get what I asked for in length, styling, and time commitment. I don't think I'll go to the next appointment they pressured me to book. -

So I found this place on lifebooker and got 50% off of a platinum haircut (usually $80). I made my appointment for 11am and showed up about 10 minutes early. When I arrived, the door was locked, but there was a woman inside. She let me in and I found out that she was my hairdresser, Ana.
However, because of a scheduling issue, she was alone in the salon and a manager had borrowed her key and then went on vacation without getting anyone to fill in as receptionist. So my hairdresser did my hair, but kept having to stop to answer the phone. One of the calls was lifebooker who wanted to know why no one was there to let in the 10am client. Whoops! Turns out she was running around trying to get someone to let her into the salon (since she didn't have her key) so she missed the first appointment. She offered me coffee, but then forgot to give it to me. That was weird, she could have just not offered me coffee and I would not have thought anything of it. But she was pretty busy.
Eventually, the owner came in and took over answering the phone. He was nice and casual and jumped into the conversation showing us the new designer fanny pack he just purchased.
I took off a star because of everything that happened in the 2nd paragraph. It just seemed a little unprofessional and I would have been annoyed if I was the one who's appointment was missed. Other than that, it was great!
The salon is small, but very cute and clean. Much smaller than their uptown location which I've walked by before. I think there were only 2 or 3 chairs. The place seems pretty new. Ana was great. Very nice and friendly. I have long curly hair and I wanted layers and she did a great job cutting about a foot off of my hair and giving it shape. She started blowing it out straight, even though I hadn't asked for that, but then she didn't charge me anything additional (which I have to admit, I was a little worried about).
I am very happy with my haircut, even 4 months later, and feel like I got a good deal through lifebooker. I would recommend this place, although I would probably not want to be their first appointment of the day. That was probably just an off day. I'm sure it doesn't happen often. -
Review from Jay N.
I have to be a bit suspicious of a business with several 5-star reviews by single-digit reviewers, and curiously posted within a two or three day period.. but that aside, it's unfortunate that like its predecessor salon, obtaining an appointment here is difficult and seems to be met with people who don't really care as long as enough business is walking through the door.
Having been a client at their 23rd Street location in the past, I decided to give it a try by using the same stylist I'd used before; After calling twice and speaking with two different people, I was told they would call me back for an appointment time. No such call ever materialized.
Bad customer service, poor follow-up policy and clearly a focus on more what they're doing for themselves than they are for return or potential clients. -

I was out until about 5AM (a night that culminated in me falling down in the grocery store while opening a door in the frozen foods section trying to get pizza) but still made it to a 11AM haircut at Platinum Salon. Where I was promptly offered more wine from the giant bottle on ice in the corner. Nice.
I got my last haircut at the nearby Pimps & Pinups, and while I did really enjoy the haircut/my stylist, I felt a little out-of-place, not being a hipster and all. Platinum Salon and Leslie were very much up my alley -- it's a simple but elegant space in THOR, she's a pretty blonde with beautiful long straight hair who gave me exactly what I wanted (layers, angles, long bangs, textured bottoms). She definitely took her time, even though I have very simple hair and a lot of stylists just kind of breeze through it. She is also very friendly and personable, and gives a bomb-diggity head massage.
I booked through lifebooker and got a wash and cut for $40, which was a solid deal. The salon itself is small but nice -- and conveniently located to several great boozy brunch choices, so after you get your new 'do, you can wander off squinting into the sunlight and get yourself some tasty food and hair of the dog. -

I really should have known better than to go outside of my usual salon which I love, but the price of highlights through lifebooker were so cheap that it lured me to Platinum.
Quite a bit of waiting around was involved here and I was never once offered a drink or magazine. After four and a half hours of being here I was expecting to leave with some pretty fabulous hair, so was quite surprised when my hair was dried to reveal.....darker hair than I had when I walked in the door. Which is the exact opposite of what I asked for. I realized that I couldn't stand to be in that salon one more minute so just left and went to my amazing Aveda salon as soon as I could to have it fixed. Never again!
To Platinum's credit, they did appear to have some regulars who seemed very happy with their haircuts. -

Found this gem on lifebooker and couldn't be happier with my service today.
Besides giving me a fantastic wash/massage, Peter (the owner) also read my mind about getting rid of my "boring" hair. Bangs and new layers voila!
A great cut and great service. Go!
P.S. It's location across from Economy Candy doesn't hurt either. ;) -

I had just gotten a cut at Projet, and headed over here for the color special- 50% off. I was in a less than stellar mood after the cold reception I received at the last place, but that faded as soon as I walked into Platinum.
I was about 20min early, and was greeted warmly by everyone in the place. They were all friendly and in a great mood, which quickly put me at ease. Even when I told them I wasn't 100% sure what I wanted done, Ele seemed excited for the challenge.
Ele is a genius. His assistant was a sweetheart, and they both worked to be sure I'd be completely pleased with my results, which I was, beyond a doubt!
I entered with two-tone, brassy brown hair, and left with beautiful chocolate locks. For the single process and partial highlight, it would've cost around $135, but thanks to the deal, it was a SUPER affordable $67.
I love this place- the service, the results, the price, the atmosphere- it's officially my go-to hair place. -

There is a saying that when a woman wants a change in her life, the first thing she does is change her hair. (Pointing finger at self.)
Hence, my decision to try Platinum Salon, the new salon near my home. I made an appointment and was paired with Pamela.
At 6 pm, we got straight to work, starting with the cut. She really cared about what I wanted in the cut and translated it wonderfully onto my hair.
For my color, I suggested a slight enhancement to my natural color. At first we were going to do a single process, but Pamela suggested doing a color gloss (a treatment that was much less expensive and time consuming.) Once the gloss was done, my hair was much healthier and richer looking...another perfect translation.
In addition to Pamela's talents, I was very impressed with the overall service and atmosphere of Platinum. Everyone was very nice, helpful, talented and fun!
But, more importantly, the experience served its ultimate purpose: immediate gratification. : )!!!
I'll definitely be making this change a permanent one.Listed in: Stanton Struttin'

Like a lot of people here, I found this place through http://lifebooker.com. I have no qualms about my haircut. I actually really like it.
I booked one of the last appointments of the day, and as was expected my hair stylist was running late. When my turn came around half an hour later, I didn't get that head massage that was advertised. I was fine with this since I didn't want to spend my entire evening there.
A minor issue came up when it was time to pay. Through lifebooker, it was advertised that I would get 50% off which would end up costing me $35 for the cut. They actually charged me 50% off $80. The price difference isn't much and I actually didn't realize it until I left the salon. I was rushing to grab a cupcake from Sugar Sweet Sunshine and going home to check out my new cut. But I witnessed several other customers having issues regarding their pricing. I would come here again, but be more aware of what they were charging me. -

I first found Platinum Salon when I bought a certificate from http://Lifebooker.com for a haircut. At the time I had really long hair (for me) that was desperately in need of a chop. My hair is pretty manageable but also on the thick side - which surprisingly daunts a lot of stylists - but I thought I might as well try Platinum and use the great deal from http://lb.com.
After I met with Peter Diaz and talked about how I wanted the minimal amount cut off, he went to work. When he was done, I was left with the PERFECT long layers (something I had been weary of after numerous bad cuts). He had also superbly thinned my hair to the point that I felt I had dropped 3 pounds off of my neck. He was AMAZING.
At this time I was also drastically in need of highlights (shocker - someone with naturally dark brown hair who attempts to be a platinum blonde needs to touch up their roots more than once every 4 months - who knew??). When I scheduled my haircut at Platinum I left out the highlights as, thanks to trustworthy http://lifebooker.com, I had a deal for full highlights at another salon in a different part of town. As soon as I saw what Peter had managed to do with my cut, I booked a highlight appointment for the following week on the spot. Forget the deal, I knew I needed his expertise.
Once again, when I walked in tonight to Platinum, I felt immediately welcomed and at ease. Peter listened to my "ideas" and took it from there. When he was done fixing my 4 inch roots (no joke - not a good look) it was the best highlight I had received. I finally looked like a natural blonde!! And this is coming from someone who has been "blonde" for 12 years. He once again proved his expertise!
I went to pay and was ready to pony up the money for the amazing job Peter did (and tried to ignore the http://lb.com deal sitting in my inbox) and was AMAZED by the affordability! I had received a 5 star color job (and cut) at a 1 star price!! Platinum Salon and Peter will absolutely be my go-to salon from here on out and I highly suggest that others follow suit (just don't take the appointment times I need!)!
On a personal note - Peter is as nice and funny as he is talented! And that's saying a lot! -

I really loved the Platinum salon in Midtown West but I went to this one in the LES because my girl left the Midtown salon and this one is closer to my house I HAVE NEVER REGRETED MORE spending $80.
First of all they had NO TOWELS!!! After getting shampooed, my head sopping wet i get dried off (sort of) with a rag. Granted they just opened, there is NO EXCUSE for not having TOWELS in a hair salon for god's sake!!! Not to mention they were keeping the door open for the construction men in there and it was FREEZING.
The highlight took wayyy too long and didn't even do the job!!!!

I went here about 2 months ago because I found it on Lifebooker and wanted to go from a brunette to a fiery red head. I bought a double process through lifebooker. When I went in, I showed them a picture of what I wanted. Fiery coppery red head right? Well, the stylist said that she didn't want to ruin my hair by bleaching it but that just a single process would be almost the same. No sir! It ended up coming out that high-school goth purply red which was INCREDIBLY not what I wanted. Thankfully over the past 2 months it has faded to a nice auburn (close to my actual hair color.) Also, while the color was setting, the stylist kept saying things like "oh wow I hope this comes out how I want it to!" Hello....IT BETTER!!! Why would you say that to your client? So now I'm going to try Pimps and Pinups and hopefully they will give me what I want! Not to mention this place still charged me for a double process!! I should have just went back and asked them to fix it to how I wanted but I just didn't want to fight that battle.
Overall I found that the staff was kind of unprofessional (yes it was near closing time) but they were sitting on the floor behind the reception desk and talking badly about previous clients. -

I got the most awful blow out of my life....I have very healthy shiny hair, and the lady who did it manage to make it look dull and frizzy, after leaving half a pound of leave in conditioner and telling me I was the perfect candidate for a Keratin treatment.....Someone else in the staff did try to fix my hair, and offered that I come in later to re do it, which was nice.

After my last stylist moved I turned to lifebooker to try and find a new one. I found Platinum and double checked their reviews and figured it was worth a shot. I wasn't looking for anything drastic, so I thought it would be ok.
So I get there and there had been some mishap (which I will say was not their fault) and so my appointment was not in their system. The girl at the desk was very nice, and they worked me in. Unfortunately I wish they hadn't.
After waiting 20 min (which I understood given the situation) Peter asks me what my hair concept is...
This threw me a little, because I wasn't aware that I needed to prepare a "hair concept" to get a trim. I very specifically told him that I am trying to grow my hair out and that under no circumstances did I want bangs.
30 min later I have more layers than I thought possible and of course bangs. It's also completely uneven. There is twice as much hair on one side of my head than the other. He also did the entire cut with thinning shears, which to me seems lazy.
Maybe it was just because he was rushed, but if you don't have time to do it right then you should probably reschedule. -

I am a blonde NYC transplant from OKC...Ive lived here 3 years and hated every place that i got my hair done, until i found Platinum Salon through LifeBooker. I read the yelp reviews and knew it would be good, had my hair cut with Peter Diaz and color 1/2 head highlights with Melinda. I specifically requested her for highlights because I read she was the best and she did a great job. Peter did a great job on the cut as well. They were all so gracious and wonderful to me, i felt like i was part of the family for a day! I am going back next week (the first time i went was Aug 31) and I can't wait. They really do a stellar job. Please go here if you are a blonde looking for great highlights and great cut too! Even if you arent blonde, there were tons of other people (male and female) getting cut and color in there too! You will love this place!

Discovered Platinum Salon through a Lifebooker deal ($49 for partial highlights + blowout and style). Came here on a Sunday morning and I was the only customer but that was kind of nice because I got the whole salon to myself! Lizzie, my stylist, was patient, listened to my direction, gave me suggestions on my chosen style, and explained everything she did so I wouldn't be nervous. She did a fabulous job with my highlights and cut. I can't say if it's one of my best haircuts of all time but so far, I'm not disappointed. We'll see how it grows out. Love my highlights - they're the kick I need to get through the dreary winter months ahead! Prices are very reasonable too. Definitely give this place a try!

Anna did an amazing job coloring my hair. I did a double process and a color correction and she did an outstanding job getting me amazing color results and giving me what I wanted. She is very professional, knowledgeable, creative, cautious and thorough. I also appreciated that she also checked in with other co-workers who had lots of coloring experience too since I had a big color job and she wanted to make sure she did as best job as possible. I will be back and was lucky to have Anna color my hair and give me amazing color which everyone is complimenting me on so much now!

Unfortunately, my second visit to Platinum Salon was not a success. I saw Melinda this time and after sitting in the chair for 3 hours I left with a bad blow out and dried out, too blond highlights. I don't know about you, but when I go to the salon I expect to leave with my hair looking better than when I do it myself... especially when I'm listening to the stylist tell me how great and knowledgeable they are the entire time.

Since I moved here in January I have been all over the city looking for a great blonde colorist. I have been extremely dissapointed with the previous two salons I tried, the colorists I saw really just threw bleach all over my hair and rinsed- leaving me with that trashy blonde look. So after looking all over the internet I finally decided to give Platinum Salon a try, after hearing they were specifically good with blondes. Upon my arrival I was given a glass of wine and got to enjoy candy while I waited- I was already impressed! Anyway, Melinda did my all over blonde foil highlights and she absolultely nailed it!! I like to be really, really blonde and she gave me such a beautiful, bright and most importantly healthy looking color. I loved her personality and her dedication to giving me exactly what I wanted (she even let me check the color to see how I liked it after rinsing to make sure I was completely happy before she proceeded). I recommend her 110%, she is awesome at what she does and very nice to work with. I will absolutely be coming back!!
