30 reviews for Planet Salon
One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
You know it's a great salon when EVERY review is 5 stars! I wholly agree.
The second you enter Planet Salon, your senses are flooded with the amazing aromas of the Aveda products. The staff are impossibly friendly and hip, and since I'm the type who shows up to a salon in sweats since it's a "rebuilding" kind of day, haha, I am always pleasantly surprised that such good looking, well dressed employees are so nice to me in my scrubby outfit! This is the "change into your robe, what kind of refreshment can I get you?" kind of place, and I love having that kind of pampering luxury for such a reasonable price! The stylists are all great from what I've seen; mine is Elle, who is equally good with classic simple long layers as she is with funky choppy bobs. (I've got the layers, my friend has the choppy bob). My hair is super thick, heavy, and wavy, and she is able to thin it out invisibly so that my head literally feels 10 lbs lighter after every cut. I LOVE IT. I'd been debating coloring my hair a bit for several appointments, so she offered me a FREE coloring the next time I go. Stylists just DON'T DO THAT anywhere else!! Elle is amazing.
You start with a scalp and shoulder massage with aromatherapy, which is so relaxing! You then have some combination of dry cutting, Aveda shampoo and conditioner, and wet cutting. After perfecting the style, you get a blowdry, style, and flat iron if necessary, and they finish you with Aveda styling products. Sometime in between you'll usually get an Aveda lotion hand and arm massage from a staff member, which is also super relaxing. My favorite part is just smelling everything they put on my head!! You walk out feeling like a million bucks, because your hair is shiny, beautiful, bouncy, and smells like the rainforest and wildflowers! I used to be terrified of haircuts because I've been butchered a couple times (the downside from constantly moving and having to test out new salons), but the stylists here all have great vision for what will work on you, so you can trust their judgment =)
They have a nice subtle tip box so you don't have to awkwardly hand your stylist cash, which I like because I can be really awkward with that. The whole shebang costs me $75 which is just unreal, such a great deal! If you need color or highlights, it'll obviously run you a bit higher, but still very reasonable. Plus, for you college girls out there, if there is a cool style you want but don't think you can afford, like a full color makeover or Japanese straightening, the Planet Salon stylists are constantly looking for hair models for a variety of classes and processes, so odds are you can con your way into getting that expensive treatment for free!
Only downsides are that street parking on Robertson Blvd takes about 30 min of circling to find, minimum, and if your hair appointment runs longer than 2 hrs, you'll have to refill the meter, but the stylists are great about asking someone else to run out and do it for you :) Also, they do try and persuade you to buy their line of Aveda products, some of which are worth the money and some that aren't, but they aren't overly pushy about it, so you don't feel harrassed or guilted into it. Plus, if you tell them I recommended you try this salon when you make your appointment, we both get $20 off our next appointment! Great deal :) Ask me if you want more info about it!
NOTE: The addresses go out of order kind of, so if you Mapquest this salon you end up about 2 miles away (personal experience) looking confused on Robertson Blvd while being run over by paparazzi chasing a Baldwin... The easiest way to find it is that it is on the block immediately north of the Robertson/Olympic intersection! Circle that block til you find a meter.
Love this salon and especially love Kory. I live in Nor Cal so I'm not able to come here on a regular basis, but at least a couple of times a year, it's fits into my schedule. Love the fact that they are now open on Sundays.
I had hair that was a bit past my shoulders and Kory very gently suggested we go with something 'a little more youthful'. What a sweet way of saying this old chick (a young 45) needed an upgrade. I told him to go for it. As far as I'm concerned, hair grows back so even if I hate it, it's just a matter of time before a bad cut goes away.
He cut several inches off my hair and gave me a bouncy, shiny do with hints on how to style it and keep it shiny. Gotta tell ya. I love it. I've been keeping up on a few different versions of his original style, but have stayed with his concept and basic lines. My husband is not crazy about my shorter hair but has even admitted how it frames my face so much better and does look more youthful. Didn't want to be 'that' woman desperately trying to look younger than she is.
A cut and blow dry is $70 which is just $10 more than I'm paying in Sacramento. But you can't beat the Aveda service. Aromatic from the moment you step into the shop. And the best head and neck massage ever. Plus, it's on Robertson which is my favorite street to shop so I figure it's meant to be!
Every time you put color in your hair you're slowly killing it. Maybe you can even hear each strand screaming out their last breathe. But if you go to this wonderful Aveda Salon your roots to their tips will breathing a sigh of relief, with the natural elements that are used to make your hair the best it can be.
A full service Aveda salon with hair cutting, styling and dying you'll never want for a new look. With wonderful stylists like my favorite Elle, who will sit with you through hours upon hours of hair managing you'll be in the best hands around. From the kind people who wash your hair at the beginning middle and end, to their hair cutters and hair dyers (sometimes they are all one in the same) you will have a friendly, happy, and all around great experience here.
With complementary hand massages as you wait for your do to become perfection you'll be relaxed and ready. They even offer coffee, tea and water to keep you energized as you wait for your new self to come alive. Walk out of there with your hair feeling, healthy, silky smooth and looking better than it ever has before (that is until your next trip to this great salon).
I came here on the recommendations of Yelpers and it did not disappoint. I wanted a natural highlight - something to make my hair look "sun kissed" but not highlighted. Jessica gave me exactly what I was looking for. On top of that, she was friendly and sweet and gave me honest feedback about what would and wouldn't look good on me. The salon carries only Aveda products but I was so impressed - no one tried to force any products on me! I love that!
I got the impression that everyone here really loves what they do and everyone is highly specialized; i.e., Jessica did not cut my hair because she is trained as a colorist only. I like that kind of unique specialization.
The price is reasonable - I was charged $90 for partial highlights, which is admittedly more than I'm used to paying but it was well worth it.
I found this place through fellow Yelpers. Boy, us Yelpers don't lie! Plus a colleague recommended Aveda products was a great way to go if you want a drastic change in your hair color. Henceforth, I meet the most amazing stylist, Elle, through other Yelpers. She is truly an artiste in hair and watching her snip away like "Edward Scissorhands" on another client. It was like watching someone who truly enjoys her craft and I KNOW definitely to come back to Elle whenever I want an extremely short sexy do!
I went to Planet Salon because of the reviews here on Yelp and it didn't disappoint.
The staff are wonderful-from the tea, to the hand massage to the scalp and neck massage when you get your hair washed-it's all top notch without that ridiculously snobby vibe you get at other upscale salons.
However, the biggest reason to visit the salon is ELLE-she is, flat out, the best stylist and colorist I have ever had and I am one picky, picky lady.
She is clearly extremely skilled but really listens to what you want, does a phenomenal job and makes your time there fun and relaxing.
I hesitate to write this cuz it'll probably make it harder to get an appointment with her, but she is fantastic and the salon is as well!
If you're interested in a place that people really care about the work that they do: go here.
Celeste was great! I've been there a couple of times now and I think I'm sold - I will be a regular there from now on. I've never felt so sure about my hair color before. You Rock!
Love this place! You know how you are always are stressing whether to pony up for that amazing extremely expensive salon (my beloved BonBon NYC at $400 a pop) or trying to find a moderately priced best alternative (previously Trim on Abbot Kinney) knowing the quality will most likely suffer. Well, the stars have aligned and I have found a salon, colorist, stylist, price and amazing end result look all in one place! Unheard of, yeah I know, right!!! But please read on...
Kelli was the most attentive colorist ever. I came in as I always do with some newer, more improved color combo in mind. She went through a full analysis of how dramatic/conservative, color swatches that would accentuate vs. wash out my skin tones, etc. The finished result is a trendier, brighter palatte (honey with light brown lowlights and a few pieces of auburn). Its amazing how just a few different placements and hints of auburn can bring out the best in your skin!
Kory, my stylist, was practically my long-lost soul mate. We chatted over Ohio where we both grew up and relative craziness, and along the way, he did a fabulous cut. Like most LA transplants, I am growing out my hair. He was extremely respectful of my length and razored in the perfect angles to subtract the volume from the wrong places and add it back in the right ones. Easy cut, but he spent a half an hour making subtle changes to get it exactly right.
During this euphoria, I also received two hand massages, a scalp massage, and a shoulder rub with aromatherapy...apparantly this is standard. Also if you tell them when you come in, the receptionist will keep your meter filled the whole time you are there. Unfortunately, street parking at 2hr meters is pretty much the only option, so this is a great perk.
Seriously...a partial highlight/tint, cut, style, extreme amounts of attention, and massages...a three hour experience for $170+tip!!
I'll work on posting a pic, because it's fabulous!
I went to see Elle because of the great reviews Planet Salon received on Yelp and Citysearch. She did a GREAT job - and I'm not super easy to please. She did all over color and highlights on my hair. Then she styled it completely different than I normally do and I loved it!
She's not super chatty, which I like, but she's still friendly and interested in your life. I hate being bombarded with questions when I'm trying to relax - but I don't like being ignored either. Elle offered a really great balance.
Also, you can't beat the complimentary hand and head massage. Amazing! You come out feeling truly spoiled. I will be back.
It's rare that I visit the same salon more than once. I've always been more of a salon hopper, spontaneously opting for a hair cut or color as a walk-in patron to whatever establishment is closest to me when the mood happens to strike.
In part my fickle salon wanderlust is reinforced by the fact that I only get my hair cut a few times per year, and by the time I return to visit the person who last cut my hair, that individual has often moved on.
In any case, Planet Salon has managed to secure my business steadily for the last year. It doesn't hurt that they are always really nice, and use great Aveda products. The stations are clean and modern, and you don't ever feel like you're being hustled along on the moving sidewalk of the Jetsons personal grooming assembly line. Kimberly, the cute little blond who always cuts my hair, never lets me leave the salon looking like Cosmo Kramer (unless that's the look I'm going for, you never know). They take their time shampooing and conditioning you, and the complimentary hand and shoulder massage with aromatherapy are always an unexpected but very welcome treat. Their prices are very reasonable given the perks and the personal attention.
On a recommendation from a girlfriend, I decided to give Planet Salon a shot, and I'm glad that I did.
The reviews here are all exellent and true. The staff are wonderful from the tea, to the hand massage, they dont have a snobby vibe like other salons might. Elle is the best stylist and colorist there is. Ask for Elle when you go she's great and very professinal and not overly chatty.
I gotta give it to Celeste!! THANK YOU, CELESTE...I LOVE MY HAIR COLOR!!!!!
Once upon a time, my hairdresser of nearly two years disappeared into thin air. Got a call, "Richard won't be able to do your hair on Sat." Huh, was he sick? "No, he moved to Washington" Um, okay. Try not to freak out.. Ask around - try new places, this could be a good thing. Time for a change and all that.
Not so much. After trying salon after salon, some ritzy Beverly Hills joints, some artsy WeHo places.. My hair was done. Literally. Fried and tried, much like my patience. My shoulder length, once a lovely shade of red, had turned into a cropped fireball. I looked like Cloris Leachman. With bigger ears.
At this point I was about to fly back to the East Coast to get my hair "fixed", when a friend recommended Planet. I am forever in her debt.
Charles returned my color to a shade that didn't resemble Bozo the Clown, and Ginger made me actually like my pixie cut. People stopped me on the street, not to recommend a place to buy a hat, but to ask me where I get my hair done. The universe had been set right.
The moral of my story? Charles and Ginger better not have any plans to move. Ever. Unless they want a tiny white girl stalking them.
After checking out several salons I finally found a place to go back to. Geno did a great job, super clean precise cut that has lasted a couple of months now. Just made another appointment to go back and am looking forward to it. The extras make it a good value also.
I used to go here all the time to get my hair colored and cut...but then my stylist left and I had to follow her around until she opted to no longer do hair.
My boyfriend comes here whenever in need of a quick cut and always comes out stylish and coiffed to the extreme!!
I even felt the need the other day after having had a massage at nearby Touch and a mani/pedi at the Paint Shop next door...to stop in for a little wash, dry and style for the Yelp Prom!! I was feeling lazy I tell ya...lazy.
So they got me RIGHT in which was a shock in itself on a Saturday at 1pm. My stylish, Roxy, was AWESOME!! We went through different scenarios about how I'd like my hair to be to fit with my 80's ensemble for the eve. We, after drying and curling, opted to go with the half up/half down, slightly pin-up-esque "do." Roxy bobby and hair pinned my hair so no little tress was left out in the cold, dangling in my face...she sprayed until her little heart's delight...and made absolutely sure I was pleased to no end before sending me on my way...for $25!!! UNHEARD of! Most places charge an arm and a leg to wash, dry and style long hair...but not Roxy. I tipped her nicely because she did such an amazing job...and the hair, well, it stayed through the night and still looked fab.
So thanks Planet Salon for always being there when we need you (love coming out smelling of Aveda Products!! MMMM) and thanks Roxy for brightening my day and making my adult Prom the bomb.
I'm an asshole. I decided to give myself highlights from a box from the drugstore. So OF COURSE, I had to go get them fixed today by a professional.
I've been getting great haircuts by Carrie here for a while, and have always had a good experience, but today was above and beyond! I had my hair retouched by Dean, and he was AMAZING -- he didn't even make me feel bad for screwing up my hair and making his job even harder. Not only that, after my shampoo, they gave me a full neck and shoulder massage and when I was getting blowdried, I got a hand and arm massage. BLISS!!! (I can't believe it's all included in the price of getting some highlights fixed!)
To top it off, Dean dyed my eyebrows to match my new hue, and he did it completely FREE OF CHARGE! He said that he was mixing dye anyway, so why not include it?!
This place isn't cheap like SuperCuts, but it's still very reasonably priced (even cheaper than getting a trim at the mall salon). And the service and amenities are OUTSTANDING. They even go feed the parking meter for you with their own change if you're running over. Five Stars!!!
I'm sorry, with all of the 5 stars here, that I have to report a bad experience. But honestly, I found this place on yelp and went because of the 5 stars. I walked into Planet one day because I am in desperate need of a new hair stylist. Everyone was super friendly and they gave me a tour of the place. I made an appointment for the following week. Now, at the time, my hair hadn't been cut in a VERY long time. So, it was just long, and strait. I wanted some layers put in and some shape around my face. I brought a pic with me that looked like a fairly simple haircut. I am a graduate student, so I went with one of the salon's lesser experienced people. Big mistake. Honestly, it took her longer to wash my hair than it did to cut it. She talked me out of the cut in the picture and just basically gave me a trim. I don't know if she was behind in her time or something, but I couldn't figure out why she wouldn't do what I was asking? It was a simple haircut completely do-able on my hair. I'm not kidding when I say she spent under 5 minutes cutting my hair. It was shocking. I didn't express my discontent because she hadn't been listening to me the entire time I was there, so why would she listen to me now. I just wanted to leave. And leave I did -- never to return. I understand that I went with someone who was not their top person, But I assumed all the stylists were at least of a certain kaliber as to even be employees. ...or else why would Planet Salon hire them? I"m sorry, but I paid $85.00 for a haircut I could have gotten at Fantastic Sam's for $14.00. In fact, I've gotten better cuts at Fantastic Sam's. Disappointing.
Awesome place. I got married in September in Studio City. I'm form NJ so it was quite difficult to decide on a place to have my hair done. I read few reviews on Yelp about Planet Salon and book them for myself, my sister and best friend. Love it! I did not have a trial but the girls did wonderful job. My sister got haircut and she's a fan! I will use them again, since now I will be a LA resident!
I will keep this short and sweet. I love it. Aveda products are the only ones I use on my hair and I found a colorist that is amazing.. DEAN!
After trying a few stylists in town I finally found one that can cut my hair properly. Its semi curly so when the marine layer rolls in it curls up and can look really stupid no matter how I try to straighten it so the cut is KEY.
KORY works his magic and I'm good to go no matter what the weather.
I highly suggest you pay them a visit!
Geno is LA's biggest secret. Who wouldn't want their hair done by the guy Aveda is always flying around the country to train their stylists? He rocks w/ short hair. I've given up telling him what I think he should do with my hair because he always comes up with something better.
I've become a "hair-by-Geno" groupie. LOVE how he keeps me looking wayyyy younger & cooler than I am... Hope I never ever go back to those horrible pre-Geno years that were chock-full of post-haircut "oh god!" freak-outs & frantic "how-do-I-salvage-this!!!" moments
Geno = my hair hero.
Oh -- & Aveda color is awesome: totally natural + doesn't dry out my scalp or hair
As the sole dissenter, I realize readers will take my comments with a grain of salt. But I must heartily disagree with the positive reviews of Planet Salon. Twice they stuck me with novice stylists that the owner later told me outright had not been doing a good job. A bad haircut grows out and I'm not so vain that I can't live with it. But the second time I went there (to get a little gray out, I thought), they turned my brown hair a saturated goth black, just before a family reunion in rural Arkansas. I had to pressure them not to charge me for it. They would not agree to have their senior stylist lift out the color free of charge, much less reimburse me for the very expensive processes I had to commission from another stylist. Planet Salon is more affordable than other LA salons because they use inexperienced stylists who mean no harm but don't know what they're doing. I recommend staying away, especially for color treatment.
My stylist was Kory and he was great! He listened to me to get exactly what I wanted. We weren't sure what length bangs would work on me so he slowly cut shorter until I liked the length. My hair was so full and heavy before, but now I can barely feel it! He knows exactly what to do to make your hair look and feel fantastic! I got several compliments on how great I looked when I went back to work the next day! Another thing I love, they have a tip box with envelopes that you can leave for your stylist so you don't have to awkwardly find him and hand him some cash =)
When I lived in Los Angeles, this was the place I went to get my hair cut. I usually got my hair cut by Jackie, but when I was desperate for a cut and Jackie was unavailable, I would branch out and try others. I had consistently good haircuts here, some better than others. They also use all Aveda products so my hair actually looked healthier after it was dyed. Another bonus - they give you an aromatherapy neck massage every time you get your hair washed. To die for.
the first time i went to this salon i had a great experience and got exactly what i was looking for and was tremendously happy with my haircut. the second time i went i was absolutely miserable. i got the highest level colorist and haircutter and paid hundreds of dollars, so don't think i went cheap and got stuck with the apprentice either.
even though i had an appt they had made a mistake and i waited ignored for an hour, while everyone gave me dirty looks. i repeatedly said that if it was a problem i would come back another day even though it wasnt my fault. they said no wait ten minutes, turned into an hour. the hair-dying person did highlights for about 10 minutes then handed me over to whatever new haircoloring person who put color on my hair and then forgot me for way too long. no one talked to me or said anything and i felt like i was some kind of alien or the person who had just killed everyone who worked there's dog or something.
the hand massage was the only thing that was nice. my hair didnt turn out the color i wanted it and has since washed out quickly, ie they dyed it way too light and now it's back to the same color. the person who cut my hair had the attitude that i had somehow offended him personally though i hadnt said a word and he cut my hair for about 12 minutes in annoyed silence. he basically gave me the worst haircut i've ever gotten, even from my mother, and i look like a little boy. yes numerous ppl have told me i look like a little boy and i am not in a position where i can look bad. or like a boy. i don't know if he was trying to punish me for something or if he just thinks women should look like boys. i practically started begging for him to let me leave as i had now been there for hours and hours and the cut was getting worse and worse and i couldnt take anymore, but he wouldnt let me go. the entire time i was there i felt like i had the plague (not how i'm used to being treated, anywhere!) and kept thinking of that Rodney Dangerfield joke "if it gets any livelier in here, a funeral's gonna break out!" i was in tears as i paid my 100s of $s bill and left . i felt like everyone there went out of their way for some unimagineable reason to make me never come back. I WONT. i also saw another girl get her hair ruined while i watched but at least they were pleasant to her. if you want the atmosphere products and etc there are other Aveda salons that arent full of aholes. i'd rather hand a pair of pinking shears to a homeless guy and ask him to do it for a beer than ever step foot in this place again!
I've been going here for almost four years, and I'd never even think of going anywhere else. I've had multiple stylists here (turnover seems to be a curse in the hair-styling world) but all of them have been great. Geno does a mean cut and provides awesome conversation and Dean is the best colorist in the whole wide world. This place is always welcoming and accomodating - they even feed your meter for you. Cost is pretty average for the high quality and service - I've definitely heard of other folks paying more elsewhere. Not a lot of high-pressure product sales - they have their own "frequent-flier" club (no Pure Privileges), so they don't seem to push the Aveda stuff on you as much as other places.
I love this salon as it's clean, friendly and I can get a blowout for $25!!!!!!!!! Yep $25!!!!!!!!! I think that's unheard of in Los Angeles. I go to Kimberly who is super sweet and very well priced for cuts too. Can usually get in day of.
I am a difficult customer for a hair salon: I am quiet and don't typically want to chit chat, I don't always have a style in mind but I know when I don't like what's been done to my hair. I came here after a six-month hiatus from hair cuts - my bangs had completely grown out and my hair was nearly to my waist. They had stylists in 3 different price ranges, which I thought was a great idea, but went with the top price since my hair needed quite a bit of work. Regardless of the wild state of my hair, Geno and his crew were warm, gracious and most importantly, extremely talented. Geno figured out how to cut my hair without losing the length, fixed up my bangs to their straight-across glory and even taught me what I now regard as the ONLY way to blow dry a fringe. They told me to stop by for a trim whenever I needed it and didn't even try to coax me into buying any products after I said no thanks. All that, not to mention tea, candy (it was around Halloween) and a hand massage. Now my hair just needs to hurry up and grow out again so I have a reason to go back.
At long last I found the perfect salon! First impressions are important in the wooing a new client process. I was greeting with friendly smiles and made to feel comfortable right away and new I had found something great. Before getting my hair washed,I was given a glass of water (or tea or coffee- whatever you want), a relaxing scalp, neck, and shoulder massage with the aromatherapy oil of my choice and a consultation with my new stylist, Carrie, where I happily found out we were on the same page right away and she new what I wanted and how to take it to the next level. My shampoo and conditioning came with a second scalp massage. Heavens to Betsy- thank god for relaxation! I got a really great cut, and a hand massage during my cut..more relaxation points! The colorist, Celeste, came by to introduce herself and suggest some color ideas that I might have to explore later. The staff was very warm and complimentary of my new hair. I'll definitely be back and look forward to looking into some new styles with my new stylist. Hallelujah!
Update: 5/11/09
Oops...I yelped too soon! I must confess that I posted my review the same day as my haircut & have learned my lesson - wait a few days until you've had the chance to wash & style it yourself. Therefore, I have to downgrade my review. While Geno did take the weight out of my heavy tresses, my style just didn't hold up & I was ultimately disappointed. He is certainly better than average but I have not returned.
Ladies, listen up! If you are looking for a razor cut (a la Nick Arrojo)from "What Not to Wear" on TLC, you've hit the jackpot!! My search for a stylist has officially ended after 2 years. I chose Planet after calling Arrojo Studio in NYC (never been there) to ask for a referral in L.A. & boy, did they hook me up! Thanks, Katie & Jennifer for your reviews of Geno as I have short hair & found out today at my appointment that he's the only one in the salon that's trained to use an open, straight razor. He is a dream the whole experience was fabulous. Brian was assisting & gave me a great massage (including arms & hands) & the shampoo chair is the most comfortable I've ever experienced. The service was amazing & for $105.00 it's worth every penny, a steal if you consider that Nick charges $400.00 in NYC! If you're looking for a stylist that's highly technically trained, creative & upbeat, look no further...you will NOT be disappointed - Geno is the MAN!!
Here's how much I love the job that Elle at Planet Salon does for my hair. When we were in Miami she used to do my hair...and it took FOREVER to find someone like her there! Then just as I felt finally "taken care of" she up and moves to LA! So we moved to the West Coast as well (OK, I lie, we were planning the move anyway...but that's beside the point!). So now even though we live down in San Diego I make the 2 hour (or?) drive up to see her in LA. Now admittedly we stay a few days for the shopping and the restaurants but still...in any case Elle is terrific. For someone who has been in the business for just a few years she is very talented and even more importantly extremely dedicated to her craft. She cares about what she is doing and will definately make suggestions but also assuage to my wishes (I'm a BIT 'high maintenance'...but SELF maintainng) especially for a straigh guy ;). Elle's schedule is starting to fill up now that she's been out here awhile so my advice is to check her out and become a "regular" soon!
