This place is an awesome deal. I got in on the $10/month promotion, which is INSANE for a NYC gym. I've yet to have a problem getting a machine, even during rush hour. It's great being able to watch trashy TV while I'm busting my butt on the arc trainer (I've never seen so many of these machines in one place, BTW). The locker room is immaculate, people are really good about cleaning the machines, and the staff is really nice.
It's a nice, basic gym that's well-cared for. I don't really need much more. The only things I'd wish for are: more stretching space, and equipment like bosu/stability/medicine balls and jump ropes. But I can do without them, at this price. :)
Alright, I wanted to review this gym the first time I went, but I decided to allow myself to go at least 5 times to get a good feel. As of present I belong to two gyms, my old gym membership expiring in a few weeks. I was extremely torn with finding a new gym. My old gym (Fitness Point on 34th Ave in Astoria) was disgusting. The equipment was old, nobody wiped down the machines, things were falling apart, BUT it was a whole 2 blocks away and had an amazing classroom that was empty most of the time I was there. Plus it had that neighborhoodly kinda feel to it.
Once I saw the (then) advertisement for 1 year for $99 to Planet Fitness, I decided to just do it. What did I have to lose (besides $99)?
Here's the rundown of the first 5 visits.
1. Okay, new gym. Feeling awkward. Wait...what the hell is this machine? How do I use it? Ok ok act cool and stretch while I read the handy "how-to" guide on the machine. Alright now give it a go. WHAT?!? You can work that muscle!? Fitness Point doesn't have anything like this!
2. Hmm awkwardness subsiding. Where can I stretch out though? There's not much space... maybe I like the old gym better. There was so much room to stretch. And it was A LOT closer.
:returns to old gym for a couple weeks. home-gym sick you could say. uses old rusty dirty equipment. All treadmills broken again but two, being used by someone who's just WALKING. do that outside... SCREW THIS I'M GOING BACK TO PLANET FITNESS:
3. Hey! I can begin my workout by jogging to the gym. That both saves me time running on a treadmill, and gets me here faster! Man this place is spotless! Smells so good too!! Sunblock? Must be the tanning booths. A olfactory reminder of the beach and why I'm here?
4. It's amazing how much further I run when zoned out on the HDTV's!! I love watching Bones and CSI while running!! This is GREAT!!!
5. What other gym? (removes old gym pass from key ring).
Seriously though, this place is great. The staff are amazing, friendly, awesome. Everything is so clean, most all the cardio machines work. I noticed maybe 4 out of the like 80 machines were down (take a freaking HINT Fitness Point!!!). The price cannot be beat (I got in for $99 for the year, no extra fees at all. It was $99. NOT $100. NINETY-NINE. I think right now it's a very affordable $19 a month).
The only thing I don't like is the lack of stretching space. That's a bit lame, especially for such a large space. If they could fix that, they would be SET. Other than that, I absolutely love this gym. Oh, I also go primarily between the hours of 8-10pm and have thus far not had any problem procuring any machine. What's even more awesome is that when you sign up they give you a handout that tells you the busiest times/days by member count! For example, Mondays at 6pm showed about 500 people there, versus Wednesday at 8pm where 128 people signed in (etc, they're not exact figures, but you get the point)
There's also a free personal trainer that you can sign up for (specific times/days/workouts) to get you started on the right path to your goal. She apparently helps you in making sure you're using equipment right, gives you tips and tricks, etc. I haven't tried her out yet, but plan to sometime!
I still love Planet Fitness. Why? Because I will never find another gym this cheap in NYC. I seriously spend more on peanut butter every month than I do on my $19.99 gym membership. And even after the newness factor has worn off, they still keep things classy.
Don't get me wrong, you get what you pay for to some degree. You won't get fancy steam rooms and saunas, and you won't get classes or personal attention.
But I realized how much I love PF after going to Reebok Sports Club with my friend recently. As soon as I walked in, I felt like someone had branded my forehead with the balance of my checking account or something.
So I wear "Diabetes FUN RUN" t-shirts instead of Under Armor, sue me! Keep your snobby gym- I'll stick with Planet Fitness.

Simply the best deal if you are looking for a gym. I had never seen a better deal then what they offer for a gym and equipment.
The gym is now so overcrowded that I can hardly exercise at all. I don't have the time to wait for every single station I want to use. I'm considering canceling my membership and going to Evolution instead.
By the way, the free pizza they give out once a month is from Rizzo's. So I'll just go to Rizzo's for the pizza.

Holy smokes! I dont know how to start off this review! I must admit, I'm glad my membership with Lucille is OVER!! (The one located in Forest Hills). Once I heard about Planet Fitness on the radio, i just HADD to sign up for it!
First off, staffs are extremely friendly and welcoming.. and I mean.. NICE. Back at Lucille, the lady staffs were *itchy. I didn't like them. But people here are soooooo nice. well anyway, gym is new, so therefore, brand new equipments, showers are super clean, bathroom is super clean. locker room can get a little crowded, but it's a decent size.
second, the third floor is filled with elliptical and treadmills! You're serioulsy bound to get a machine even when it's packed. Which i love about! When i saw the site's photo of the treadmill room, i thought it was exaggerated. thinking "oh, they placed a mirror, which makes the room appear larger".. but i was WRONG! That's like the only room where it can get really packed. but it's alll gooood.
Third, there's this mysterious magical looking stalls/rooms in the basement where all the other heavy equipments and lockers are. I still don't know what it is.. either a tiny sauna, or a tanning booth.. not sure. but it seems so... magical with its purple door and nice fonts.
fourth! Every first Monday of the month is PIZZA DAYYYY!!!! What a reward!!!! :D
fifth! Place is 24 hours during the weekdays, what more can you say?!
anyway, totally worth it! I'M IN GYM HEAVEN! *twirls with arms wide open*
Oh! and by the way.. just warning you guys, when you walk out of the gym, beware of all the food temptations that's around Astoria. Esp. the vendors that has those shish-ka-bobs. It leaves your stomach and mind fighting over it. IF YOU'RE STRONG, YOU WILL OVERCOME! but.. they are so good.
Huge fan of this gym! I used to belong to NYHRC, paying the corporate 50 bucks a month. Lost my job and thought I would never be able to afford a gym. Then Planet Fitness advertised a special for $10 a month with an easy cancellation policy and a yearly fee of $30.
I thought by now (3 months later) I would hate this place and it would be too crowded. Instead, I've never had a problem finding a machine. its definitely worth the money. The staff is constantly cleaning the machines. And everyone is really respectful of each other.
Downside is no classes...but I rarely went to the overcrowded ones at NYHRC anyway. So a small price to pay
This is a really, really new gym. Everything is still fresh and clean, and has that hopeful air of "I will get fit this year!"
There are a plethora of machines on the top floor. Yes, there are as many as possible with emphasis on claustrophobia, but cmon. This is NYC. There are enough so that you can always get a machine, even *gasp* next to another person. They have a range of machines: ellipticals, treadmills, bikes and some funny ski looking thing. You can tell I come here often. There are also weights on this floor near the front. Everyone (in theory) should have there own little bench-y place and I (a girl who obviously doesn't press weights like, omg all the time) feel perfectly comfortable being in the weight section.
The downstairs area is ok, below ground level so no windows. They have a circuit weight workout area, and usually people are actually going along to the beat of the light. If they aren't, they'll get out of your way with no complaining. They also have other weight machines that, if you want, you can spend hours on.
There is a small area for stretching here, too. I wish it was bigger, but at the same time it's never been full. So there you go. Fancy pants black card members also have the option of tanning in the locker rooms down here or indulging in a massage chair in front of el TV.
The locker rooms are decent and full of lockers. The shower area is clean and basic.
Overall, worth the price and fulfills expectations.
Everything is new and clean. There's more than enough machines at all times of the day. I've never seen it so crowded that there's not a machine of your choosing unavailable. Yeah, you might have to work out next to another sweating person, but there's worse things out there.
They have a good amount of TVs with personal headphone jacks on every machine. Nice touch. The people there are good about cleaning off the machines when they're done using them too. it's well lit, and almost shockingly quiet most of the time. There's not a lot of noise, even from the weightlifting section.
The price is cheap, but they have an even more insane 10 dollar a month promotion right now. I wish I wouldn't have been so ambitious and done it last month. The staff downstairs is friendly, but it's a good hands off gym. No one's going to bother you or say anything more than hi or bye. There's no trainers roaming around or nothing. It's everything a cheap and new gym should be.
My friend has his "Black member" membership at this gym, and he kept asking me to come with him.
Yesterday I had a chance, so I decided to go work out.(since I have too much fat..:( )
He led me to this gym in Astoria.
It was kind of far from my home(30 min by car) and I was wondering why he goes to a gym this far.
When I got into the gym, I just got it.
Not so small, but not so big. Many people were working out and still enough number of equipments.
Membership is cheap. $20 for a month for "black membership". and you can bring a friend for free.
Half price for drinks too. :)
Someday, I will get my own membership there, and work out periodically. :)
Open 24 hours Monday through Friday!
Monday 12am - Friday 10pm
Saturday and Sunday 7am - 7pm
I have been a member for one month and I have regularly experienced broken equipment, unresponsive staff, dirty bathroom and now the televisions have not been working for 4 days. Frustrating
I was a member of Planet Fitness in NC before moving to the NYC area, and loved the value and relaxed vibe. So when I saw the construction on Steinway, I was totally stoked! Sign me up! And for $10?!? IN NYC? Yes PLEASE!
I've been going since they opened and don't have a complaint. Everything is shiny and new. And you can avoid the crowd by coming at various times.
I am so happy to be a member and would recommend it to anyone!
I am fat and out of shape and joining a gym was a must to attempt to turn myself around.
I joined Planet Fitness three weeks ago and I am still in love. I heard great things about it from friends that go to the centers in the Bronx. I chose it for the affordable price of $19.99 per month (Black Card Membership). It came with a few perk like tanning, massage chair usage, and being able to bring a friend. ( I use all perks equally) The Gym is open 24 Hours starting Monday 7AM - Friday 10PM. Saturday and Sunday its open from 7AM to 7PM.
Since joining three weeks ago I have been five times a week to the gym and have lost 5LBS. I usually go around midday 2PM - 5PM. The crowd is light and regular. Plenty of treadmills, elliptical, tanning booth and weight lifting equipment at that time. I once went later in the evening (6PM-8PM) and despite the crowd i was able to get machine without waiting. However I will mention that the gym was full of teeny boppers who were loud and just took up space during the evening sessions .... (The community so needs a teenage hang out space)
The staff is GREAT and always helpful. The crowd is very diverse in ethnicity and size....
I drive since I come from Williamsburg and parking has not been a problem. If you want meter parking its best to park behind the gym. If not cruise a little more and park for free on the surrounding streets.
The gym is new. They have three floors (If considering the entrance).
Bottom floor has the bathrooms/lockers, tanning, massage chairs, weight machines.
The entrance floor has the drinks and the front desk.
The top floor has the cardio room with some weights.
All the equipment is new and the place is REALLY CLEAN.
I have been there on various days and various hours, and there is always a staff member cleaning up the machines.
It's a very inexpensive gym offering two membership options; one for $19 and the other for $19.99. The one for $19.99 is a lot better, unlimited tanning, massage chairs, discounted drinks and best of all.... you can bring a friend with you for free - any time.
I believe that they are 24 hours on some days, while on others they close pretty late and open real early.
One thing that they don't have that other gyms do are classes (like yoga or aerobics )
I have been to three gyms in Astoria, I still have my membership in Astoria Sports Complex, but I really didn't like..... I was so happy when Planet Fitness opened up.
I consider myself a gym connoisseur of sorts. I have been a member of more then I like to admit. Out of all the gyms I've been a member of Planet Fitness is my favorite. The staff is friendly. The facilities are clean, bright, and cheery. Where they win my heart is only making me pay ten dollars a month. They are open 24 hours so I can work out at 1am and bob my head to the music, flail my arms to the beat, and mouth the words without too many people wondering if I need to be admitted to some kind of hospital. They have plenty of machines and I have never had to wait. That is always a plus. I wish they had some class offerings.
i canceled my membership yesterday
at the begining the gym was good and liked it
the price is good $20 a month
but then it started getting SUPER crowded especially with noisy teenagers bringing their guests and there aren't alot of machines to use.
I just wasnt feeling it anymore
im going to another gym now
i
just joined during the $10 a month promo and it is definitely worth every penny. this gym has a lot to offer and is super clean. this is a gym that is focused on getting toned and losing weight, not for the extreme bodybuilder. the dumbbells only go up to 60lbs and there aren't any benches, just a few smith machines. the gym offers a good selection of equipment and there is a ton of cardio machines available. there are also a bunch of massage chairs and tanning booths on the lower level...if you're into that sort of thing.
cheap, clean, simple. very cheap ($10 per month, no contract). no free standing barbells. dumbbells only go up to 60lbs.
