I have very mixed feelings about this place.
pros:
-huge outdoor seating which can accommodate large groups
-very relaxed atmosphere
-nice selection of beers
cons:
-terrible service
-terrible food
come here if you don't plan on eating and just want to hang out with friends somewhere outside
Burger was ok, $10 with just a pickle on the side. No fries. Pricey for a place like this.
Expensive if you want to sit down for "table service" .. if you want to call it service.
The waitress was obnoxious. We mentioned we wanted a burger before her 15 minute specials lecture. She was annoyed when we ordered a buger. We left 17% tip (the tip amounts are written on the check for your bill total). The waitress took the check and returned to ask, "was everything ok". Apparently she deserves the extra $2 to not act like a 2 year old and make everyone uncomfortable.
Won't go back.
Upside down nachos.
I'd end the review right there if I could, and yet I feel that somehow most of you yelpers require a bit more information.
The service? Not so great. Everything else is up to par, though- they have amazing specials ($12 for a bucket of coronitas, $6 bud light pitchers on Thursdays) and lots of fun entertainment (flipcup tournaments, trivia night, live music) the garden is awesome, too. Besides Sample, this is my definite go-to bar in the 'hood.
Now go get some nachos. You won't be disappointed.
I wouldn't necessarily eat here, but nice old bar. Selection is so-so, but great location and lots of outdoor seating.
love the huge outdoor seating. family place. not a scene-y place. which is right up my alley.
food is decent. beer selection is clutch. good all around!
I was excited to see the "oldest bar in Brooklyn," and the " Brooklyn iced tea," comprised of Stoli Raspberry, iced tea, and 7up, is my kind of drink and was deliciously refreshing. I was relaxedly kicking these back as they were advertised on the outdoor and indoor chalkboards as costing $6. However, after relocating to a table with mandatory table service, I was surprised to learn that I had been charged $9/each for these very drinks. Another member of my party was also charged for an extra beer that he neither ordered nor consumed. I may have appeared drunk, and I may look Irish, but the Jew in me, she don't fade. After scrutinizing the bill and drawing the overcharging to the wench's attention, all was made right in the end. But, I couldn't help but wonder if taking advantage of bar patrons was a regular practice here.
PJ Hanley's you were there when I needed you. After a long day of moving, you were three blocks down and promised pitchers of beer and cheesy, cheesy nachos. You soothed my tired soul with coconut shrimp and mango salad (delicious!) and the more Blue Moon I drank the more I could ignore the bad music in the background. Sure your bathroom was bizarre but when the bill came I was full, drunk and thrilled to discover a pitcher of Blue Moon is only $15 dollars in Brooklyn. I love my new borough! (P.S. Love the Garden)
Going here during off hours - e.g. having lunch at 4 PM on a Tuesday, it was not crowded and the outdoor patio put most others' to shame. It was gorgeous, spacious, had high chairs and tables, quite delightful.
We did have two different servers, three if you count whoever brought us our food out, which made flagging someone down a little confusing.
The fries were awesome, the beer selection was outstanding, and the food was great for bar food. Note, the guacamole had a little odd kick to it, but still didn't stop me from eating my entire wrap. The side salad was probably the best side salad I'd ever had - complete with a real variety of lettuce and onions and a great dressing. I all but licked my entire plate clean.
The bathroom was a little odd - the toilet was slanted towards the wall. It's like someone mis-installed it and was too lazy to fix it. Check it out - you will surely share the 'odd' opinion!
Hanley's has a great outside patio, and its big enought that I haven't ever had to wait to sit outside. Average food and a decent beer selection. The service though has been questionable, and sometimes just terrible.
One time the girl bartending brought the wrong food, and then acted surprised that we wanted to send it back. Other times the server just disappears and it takes 30-45 minutes to get the check and pay it. But this simply may be not enough servers for so many tables.
With that being said, I still go back.
I used to live around the corner from Hanley's and at its best it's an awesome neighborhood pub full of regulars, a great place to watch a game, and a neato remnant of the hood's German-Irish days (read: Brooklyn Bridge-era.)
They also make a damn fine mini cheeseburger.
And I guess I have only myself and spring fever to blame for going there on the first balmy Saturday night of '08, with the garden, Blue Moon and minis on my mind. I got what I deserved: douchiness. Douchiness cranked up to 11. Where do they come from, these fourth-rate frat monkeys and their immodest consorts?
Anyway, the garden was so packed with the above-mentioned that my party and I had to sit inside, at the mercy of a soundtrack that swung wildly between flamenco guitar, White Album and late-90s Jay-Z.
Even so, the mini cheeseburgers were as excellent as usual. Three of us shared an order of 12. They're rounder than sliders with a perfect ratio of meat to bun, and 3-4 makes a satisfying meal. Other members of my crew made the dubious choices of ordering, respectively, pulled pork nachos and some awful-sounding salad topped with fried fish. Not the sort of adventure I'd care to take here, but they seemed perfectly satisfied.
In sum: go on a week night and eat mini-burgers.
went there, suffered, got rolled, wouldn't go- even on a bender.
burger blew, beer blew, and service below.
cock rock over the speakers, loud as a mf, had it. .
took a shit, no tp, turd was already waiting for me in the bowl.
tables made for short people
should've grabbed an egg white sandwich at DunCAN doughnuts. Yeah that's right. 99 cents. The outdoor seating is spectacular.
This is a fine place to sit and have a beer with friends if you're a person who cares about sports and enjoys watching them on a HUGE screen. I'm not one of those people.
I also have a beef with bars that insist on having waiters serve you at your table. I am fully capable of acquiring my own beer at the bar and I don't need regular check-ups on my drinking progress. We had more than 6 people and some people ordered food so when the waiter came with our bill, he told us "not to worry" about the tip since he had done us the favor of including it. That's how you end up spending $20 for a $6 beer. If I have to go there again, I'll order from the bar.
Don't be scared of the native brooklyners inside this man bar. Go sit outside where you may run into a fellow genrification-ifier who is enjoying the cheap beer and decent hamburger / nachos / soup of the day.
The food is suprisingly tasty and goes to show that you don't need a hip restuarant to keep the people coming back.
PJ's reminds you how great it is to go back to a bar whose theme rests in their love for sports but displays no proclivity for huge plasma TV's, yankees memorabilia and sad attempts to keep up with the nouveau food trends.
Say hi to the locals and enjoy the doolies on the table, this place is great for what it is.
PLEASE NOTE: PJ's just underwent a change in ownership and it is significantly more inviting to new the new school Brooklynites. The whole bar underwent major renovation to bring it back to its 19th centrury charm. Its totally worth a try -much friendlier to the new neighborhood peeps!
Ok, so I'm ammending my review of Pj's for the third time. First they"lose" all their high chairs and now, NO STROLLERS?? So what are people to do who have kids that can't sit up by themselves? THERE ARE TOO MANY OTHER PLACES TO HAVE A BEER IN THIS ECONOMY. WHATEVER! I guess they really are trying to alienate the whole neighborhood.
the music - always too friggin' loud!!!!!! why would i want to go somewhere when i can't even hear the person across from me speak? it's the burger. it beckons me!
oh and the drunk guys at the bar are never asked to pipe down. still it is about the burger.
BBQ on the patio during the summer is awesome!
PJ Hanley's has really done a lot to makeover itself. During the summer they pull out the giant smoker and get the BBQ going on weekends. They offer rustic pizzas made in a brick oven that are really tasty. The beer selection (especially in bottles) is surprisingly good, too.
Without a doubt one of the best outdoor drinking spots around. The giant patio is great for groups, or even for a summer meal. Indoors ain't bad either. The food has improved tremendously, though I was sad when they removed the brick oven pizza from their menu. Of note: they're not dog-friendly anymore.
Under new ownership and spruced up a little. We'll have to see how it all works out. I always enjoyed sitting on the patio (never got to know the day-to-day regulars at the bar). Dog and child friendly neighborhood spot with a long history, I hope they continue the tradition.
