I look back at Pizza Suprema with fond memories. I spent many evenings here eating up some incredibly delicious pizza while cramming for Visual Basic, Active Directory, Network Infrastructure and countless other classes as I earned my Phd. in  Computer Networking at TCI.

The pizza is nice and crispy. While you may be saying "Duh all pizza is supposed to have a nice crispy crust!" Well the sad fact is when you go to these "world famous" pizzerias like Grimaldi's or Lombardi's you get some soggy expensive pizza. The sauce is sweet with some light acidity from the tomatoes. The cheese doesn't overwhelm the slice at all - a mistake found in 80% of the Neopolitan slices you'll find in NYC.

Don't be scared by the environment (that area of Manhattan is one of the last remaining spots of "realness" in terms of shady characters) and get out to Pizza Suprema....just avoid 31st Street between 8th and 7th...unless you like the smell of stale urine.

My first time in NY and I knew I had to get pizza on my vacation. It would just be wrong if I passed by your lovely city and not have a chance to try one of your top rated restaurants.

Well, I thought it was.....okay. These are the conclusions that I have come up with.

1) I noticed that through out my stay most of the food here was bland. This pizza was a bit bland. I was desperately trying to give it some flavors my masking red hot peppers on it....to no avail, I asked the bus boy if they have hot sauce. The answer would be no.

2) New York Pizza- has fresh fruit and vegetables on the pizza. Imagine BIG chunks of tomatoes and spinach all shriveled up on top of your pizza due to the heat from the stove oven. Surprisingly, it was pretty good. Looks can definitely be deceiving.

3). The pizza is not greasy.

Thankfully, they do accept cc and the place is pretty spacious.

Overall, I guess I'm still waiting for that NY pizza I have been hearing about. I don't know if this is what I was suppose to be expecting, but to me, as an out -of- towner, I say it was mediocre.

Dreaming about a slice of Fresh Mozzarella with Basil at my favorite place. Place was packed out, no problem. I'll do jumping jacks for this pizza.

"from the top 10 slices in nyc" [by gayot] caught my hungry eyes, it looked liked it paused through the last 10 years of trend and still going strong with 80's diner style seating, but it can't stop me, it looked too clean to just pass.

The plum/cherry tomato sauce adds an interesting sweetness to it, resulting in a fine slice of pizza with a perfect medium crust, $2.25 per slice, $1 for a bottle of water, my kind of price, haven't made peace yet with the automatic 25-100% price hike when a bottle of water moves into the pizza shops fridge.

Delicious, slightly sweet slice ($2.50) from a second-generation pizza maker. Far and away the best slice in the area, unless you like your slice covered in cheese and grease.

I'm from NY.
Nothing excites me. Well..almost..

I came here expecting a mundane NY slice.

Wow!

The crust was thin, crispy and crunches underneath the bite. The cheese has a nice color and flavor. It was delicious.

To those who gave them a low rating, seriously - its only $2.50 (plain - I'm a purist).

$2.50.
Get over it.

No, its not ______ (Grimaldis,Lasso,Lombardis,Patsys, etc.) - but your also not paying $20+.

From the unassuming exterior and location, one would never guess the heights of pizza greatness they offer.  I've had all three of their signature offerings, the upside down slice, plain cheese and fresh mozzarella basil.

My favorite would have to be their plain cheese, although there's nothing plain about it.  They have what I would consider the perfect crust, crisp bottom, layer of chewiness followed by sauce and then cheese.  The sauce itself is a bit on the sweet side, which I wouldn't go as far as to say that I don't care for, but is not a preference of mine.  All in all delicious.

They say Ray's is the best pizza in the NYC. It is good - if you find the right Ray's - that being on 11th and 6th Ave. Sure we have Dominoes and Papa Murphy's and all that jazz - but real New York pizza is SO different. It's BIG, and Cheesy, and the crust is thin. And there are a LOT of pizza joints in this town. Most are sub par Ray's imitators and other are ridiculously overpriced for what you get. All, even Ray's on 11th and 6th, look dingy and little gross, but that is just the way New York is - dingy and little gross (even Doctor's offices look like Crack den's here).

Anyway...

I was pleasantly surprised the other day to walk by a seemingly hum drum looking pizza joint and find a TRULY GREAT slice of pizza. It's called NY Pizza Suprema.

http://www.nypizzasupr...

It opened in 1964 and is still run by the same family. They make their own Mozerella on site and the slices are cheap and INCREDIBLE! The sauce, the crust, everything.. so good. And they are NICE. Really nice. The place looks like a run of the mill joint, but the pizza is out of this world. I highly recommend if you are ever near Madison Square Garden (or my house!) Go get a slice.

I went here on Sunday after a day of running  around NY. My friend and I were starving  and I recalled from Yelp that this place had a lot of stars so as I passed by I said "How about here?".

The place was small but neat and clean and everyone was friendly. The paperwork everywhere said to order a plain slice if you from out of town. SO I did. I also hedged my bets by getting a cheese calzone and basil/mozzarella  slice.

For me the plain slice was okay. Not awesome.

The Calzone was so crazy cheesy, I felt intimidated and had to scrape some out, lest I die of a heart attack on the spot. It was tasty though and would have been great with some marinara.

The Basil/Mozzarella slice was AWESOME and by far the best thing I tried! SO delicious! If I ever come back I am just going to get that. One of the best slices EVER.

The slices are huge and have a thin  crisp crust and are perfect to  fold in half and enjoy. The place is right across from Penn station and is pretty dang inexpensive. I say give it a try.

I finally had a slice from here this afternoon and I was totally shocked at how good it was! This place is only a block away from my apartment but I've never been inside because I didn't think it could be good and be so close to penn station at the same time. Plus, it's hard to see what the inside looks like from the outside and I always expected it to be dirty and gross. Also, sometimes there's that weird condensation that grossly drips down the windows outside.

I stand corrected because this afternoon I was finally dragged there for a hangover cure slice and was so pleasantly surprised! I had the mozzarella and basil and the fresh mushroom. Both looked delicious in the case and were put in the oven for the perfect amount of time to crisp and warm em up. Fresh toppings, fresh sauce, good cheese... no complaints at all! The crust is one of the better ones I've had in the midtown area... perfect crunch without being burnt. Inside is clean, much more so than other pizza places in the area.

Please beware- do not come here if you are looking for variety. They really only have pizza, pizza, more pizza and pizza roll/calzone things. The toppings are classic, if you're looking for buffalo chicken or bbq pizza you'll have to go across the street to Amadeus. There's no drink case either- fountain soda or you'll have to go grab yourself a snapple from the deli next door.

Just tried this place for the first time today despite working in the neighborhood for a couple years - glad I did!  I went during lunchtime and there was a line but the service efficiently took care of that in just moments.  The crust was just the way I like it - thin and crisp with the right amount of cheese and a slightly sweet but tasty sauce.  The white pizza was also very good with smooth chunks of ricotta liberally sprinkled on top and not overly greasy.  The only reason this place doesn't get 5 stars from me is the nearly 4 bucks it cost for each specialty slice (I got a mushroom, a white, and a basil mozzarella) which quickly added up $11.25 for a 3 slice lunch for my coworker and I - no drinks included.  Otherwise, great pizza and I'll definitely visit again in the future.

I am so happy to have such a good pizza place close to work.  The crust is thin and has a little bit of that burned taste, the sauce is sweet, and the cheese is plentiful.  I had the margarita slice and wasn't very impressed, but the plain slice is great.  It's crowded at lunch but they move the line fast.  Plus, the people who work there are all nice and don't seem phased by the crowd at all.  There's also tons of seating.  I'd definitely recommend going here if you just got off the train and need something to eat, or if you have some time to kill in the area.

The best slice I have had in New York. Quality ingredients, nice people working there, perfectly crusty crust with out hard and dry toppings. YUMMMMMMMMY!

My only complaint is that they close fairly early.

"serves an OK slice". Honestly you've got to be kidding me. This is definitively one of the better slices of pizza in Manhattan. This seemingly hole in the wall place has been silently heralded by pretty much every major and minor publication. So take any review that says otherwise with a grain of salt.

If you're going to Penn Station, stop by. If you're going to MSG, stop by. If you're taking your secret teenage girlfriend around the city, stop by. If you've just come from a Knicks game wearing a paper bag over your head, stop by.

We ordered a Sicilian pie with sausage and mushrooms for delivery.

It looked like roadkill, but many many things look disgusting and taste delicious.

This was not it. The crust was spongy but somehow not deliciously greasy. Just soggy with something unnameable and possibly rancid.

I called my friend to come over and taste it, just to spread the nastiness around. Like forwarding a link to 2 Girls 1 Cup. But my friend, he was unwilling.

So, it went in the trash.

On the upside, the delivery was very fast.  Of course, it was probably cooked three days ago so that's not surprising.

All I can say is, I miss Rizzo's (in Astoria) and the sooner they expand to Manhattan the better.

This place serves an OK slice. It's not a historic pizza but it's a good choice if you are in the area especially as it's served by friendly smiley staff. The base is perfect, crispy and chewy, but there was something about the sweetness of the sauce and saltiness of the cheese that just didn't work together for me. Nothing horrible about it, I ate every scrap, just not to my taste, I prefer a richer less sweet sauce.

Finally, A real slice of NY pizza, the way a true New Yorker intended pizza to taste.  Forget about all of the other guys. This place knows pizza.  It's been in the same place for 40 years and everything is made fresh every day.... even the mozzarella.

They close at 9pm so this is definitely not a greasy alcohol soaking place.... Just great pizza.

I don't understand how anyone could've given this place less than 4 stars. This is one of my two favorite pizza places in the city (Rosarios in LES is the other).

If you want a supremely (sorry, no pun intended) crispy pizza with the perfect blend of tomato sauce and cheese, then this is the place for you. I haven't even thought about trying any of the other slices because the cheese slice there is just that good.

Too bad I'm trying to watch what I eat so I can fit into my wedding dress. Otherwise I'd be eating this every weekend!

taking all things into consideration... this was pretty effing awesome.

if you frequent the penn station area quite often, as i am wont to do with my bus trips from dc to ny and back, definitely go here. there was no line, like there often is for lombardi's, the people were friendly, and the pizza was pretty much perfect. i had a slice of mozzerella and basil, which was a bit delicate in flavor but tasty tasty. then i was still hungry so i had a slice of the regular cheese, straight out of the oven. the pizza gods blessed me with a steaming hot slice, with a perfectly crispy crust and great balance between cheese and sauce.
granted, there wasnt much to ambiance, but you dont crave good pizza with a shmancy setting - you just crave good pizza. go here. now.

I was starving. After driving around for almost an hour trying to find a place to nestle my car for the weekend, I was ready to eat the pizza AND the brick and mortar facade of the nearest joint serving slices. Fortunately, my foodie soul's inner discipline compelled me to walk the eight blocks from my car to Pizza Suprema, where Yelpers promised I would swoon over the tasty slices.

In an effort to be fair, I will not review the first slice, a basil and fresh mozzarella offering that tasted like the best thing I had ever eaten because I was so hungry. So, on to the second slice: a delicious, steaming hot, beautifully topped chicken parm wonder. The crust was perfectly doughy and chewy on top, with a wonderful delicate crunch on the bottom. The sauce was zesty with a bit of sweetness (which I love), the gooey mozzarella had a deep, slightly tangy finish, and the chicken parm chunks were flavorful and moist, with just the right amount of breading. YUM!!

It doesn't hurt that four slices with two medium drinks cost $12.50. And I love that they don't put ice in the sodas, because it comes out of the fountain already cold. The decor is a bit wacky, with fluorescent lighting, old paintings and posters, and a narrow bathroom carved out of marble. But you are not here for the ambiance. By far, Pizza Suprema has the tastiest street chicken parm slice I've ever nibbled on. And that is MORE than enough!!

OK, I'm not a New Yorker, but of all the pizza joints I've tried in NYC (and there have been many), this is the best. It's the BEST pizza in NYC, IMHO. Nice and thin, crispy crust. Good tomato sauce and cheese, perfect touch of greasiness-heaven! The area is a bit shady, but that just lends it authenticity. It's perfect to pick up a slice before heading to Penn Station. Love it!

my very first new york pizza thanks to my friend who's a student @ fit.  she took us here, and i have to admit... my mozzarella 'n basil pizza rocked!  it was crispy but not hard... basil added sophistication to my otherwise less interesting cheese pizza.  however, it's delicious by itself (tried out my friend's cheese pizza).  it would get another star from me... if it had a public restroom!

I was running to catch my bus back to DC. And, I tried yet another stellar pizza place. The guy serving up slices was super nice and proud of the pizza he serves. The pizza had that great NY combo of zesty sauce, crispy crust, and flavorful gooey cheese. Honest-to-goodness delicious pizza the perfect distance from the bus. 2 slices - one w/ chicken parm - and a diet coke - $6.25.

I really enjoyed the sauce / crust combo on the upside down slice. Despite it's thickness, they cooked the slice through and there was a nice crispness to the crust. The sauce has a sweetness that worked really well with the cheese (apparently they pull their own mozzarella).

I also tried a slice of regular NY style (I opted to avoid the greasy looking pepperonis). The crust was good-not-great and the sauce again worked well to bring it all home.

I was wavering between giving them 3 or 4 stars (3.5 feels perfect). The location and inexpensiveness of this pizza is what ultimately pushed it to a 4 star place. Let's face it: it's in an area of town where good pizza spots are few and far between. If it existed south of 12th street, I probably wouldn't be singing it's praises right now.

Comparing Pizza Suprema to all other pizza places in the city, it does come up short. If you're looking for a filling bite, this pizza is just that. Put Pizza Suprema in a town like Boston, and it reigns. In New York, it's just another slice.

However, I must note that on evenings after 8 (granted it's not exactly the freshest), you can purchase TWO slices of pizza for the price of ONE. If this is appealing to you, then go go go. It is definitely worth it, and you shouldn't be disappointed. If you are, well I am sorry, but you paid 2 bucks for 2 slices of pizza.  So suck it up.

#4 favorite pizza in Manhattan.

1) Simple Cheese - This should be your first slice.  It's simple, cheap and damn good.  Loved the crust, but inconsistent.  Like many people mentioned, the sauce has a tangy sweet taste, which I loved.  I like the fresh mozzarella produced in-house.  This is a bit greasy, which I LOVEEEEE unlike many others.  Stop wiping the greasy with the napkin!  It's part of the pizza experience!

2) Mozzarella and Basil - Damn good.  Love the mozzarella cheese chunks used here.

3) Chicken Parmesan - Damn good ingredients, but crust was not like the ones you get with the other two I've tried above.  Still, the chicken itself makes this one of the best Chicken Parmesan slick I've tried.

4) Delivery - Very nice and fast, but I recommend eating it fresh-off-the-oven.  The crust is not the same when delivered.

On my recent trip to NY, my boyfriend and I got out of the subway station and within 5 seconds, we decided to: eat lunch right then, eat pizza, and eat at the first pizza parlor we see.  So voila, Pizza Suprema!

It was cute to see yelp reviews proudly posted outside.  Also gave me reassurance that it won't be some horrible hell hole. I had mozzarella and basil, boyfriend has plain cheese.  We split a coke.  It had no ice in it.  Hmm interesting.

Pizza was tasty.  But seriously greasy.  I blotted off some of the oil but the thin crust seems to be soaked.

I really liked the decor. It's so simple and old school.  People came in and out in this very efficient manner; looks more like a local joint than a touristy spot.

I guess I could've given it 4 stars, but with so many pizza choices in the city, I just don't know if it's THAT good.

Italians eat pizza here! New Yorkers who know great Pizza eat Pizza here. Sons and daughters who were taken to Madison Square Garden by there parent's now take ther sons and daughters here to eat pizza. People who know quality pizza eat pizza here.  Why because this is Great old fashioned Italian Pizza. I was taken here by my parents before going to Madison Square Garden (Circus, sesame street, ice skating etc) when I was five. Now almost 40 years later I take my children here and they love it just as much as I do. I am originally from the most iItalian neighborhood in Brooklyn ( Bensonhurst) I know how to judge a great slice of Pizza. First off you do not judge a good Pizza place by whether or not they put barbecue chicken on Pizza or the amount of chicken ( a lb. half lb)  that is placed on a slice. You do not judge a pizza place by whether they serve fountain soda or snapple or by how big or narrow the bathroom is. That is perhaps how people from out of  State origins accustommed to Pizza hut or Papa John's judge pizza. If you are from New York City you judge  a pizza place based on the quality of the slice. This is the finest slice money can buy. They use the most amazing, quality imported ingredients. Every bite brings you a thin, crispy, dough, tangy/sweet sauce peeking out under the perfect amount of zesty flavorful cheese. If you want a lot of bad quality cheese, uncooked dough and chef boy r dee sauce then you must go else where. The best pizza places in NYC only make pizza and this place is no exception. So don't go here if your in the mood for pancakes or a doublecheesburgers. Remember this is a Premier Pizzaria my out of State friends. If they aren't open as late as you like well maybe they don'y have to stick around late for the drunks  to go clog up there bathroom . Remember this is a great Pizza Place so don't expect it to act otherwise. If you want lots of low quality cheese, open late till 5 in the morning,  barbecue chicken and everything else under the sun go to Amadeus Everything Plus Pizza across the street. You'll enjoy this non Italian version of Pizza while hanging out with drunks mopping up the alcohol in their bellies.

I really don't get the hype on this place.  If I didn't know that it's so highly regarded, I would have thought it was just a completely unremarkable pizza joint.

I ordered slices of the sicilian, the chicken parmigiana, and the fresh mozzarella.  I'm sure pizza purists will howl in outrage, but the sicilian is a lot like Pizza Hut, but less greasy.  The chicken parmigiana was in my opinion completely indistinguishable from any other slice joint's pizza.  Only the fresh mozzarella was a real standout.  It was quite good, and I would definitely get it again if I was in the neighborhood, but it wasn't so good as to make this a destination pizza place in my opinion.

Possibly a factor was that none of the pizzas looked particularly fresh when I ordered.  They heated them up for me, but that's never the same flavor as if you get them fresh the first time.

The prices here are sometimes fantastic.  They have 2 for 1 slices at certain times, I think after 8pm.  Unfortunately for me, I went in at 7:55 and didn't know about this, but everyone after me got a great deal.

this is my standard for new york pizza.  i'm from california and was visiting a friend at the fashion institute of technology.  this is her favourite pizza joint, and i can see why.

having been born in michigan only to pass through the chicago area on my gradual migration to the west coast where i mostly grew up; i often prefer chicago style pizza over new york style.  however, i definitely don't mind new york pizza, especially when it's this good.  we were there in the middle of the afternoon, yet the pizza still tasted fresh.  i liked the consistency and flavour of the crust.  the sauce had a bit of sweetness to it, just enough.  the staff is super friendly, and service is prompt.

Best damn pizza I've had in a long time.

I recommend their plain pizza the first time, then move on to the Upside Down pizza, and the Chicken. The prices are quite decent and they use the right amount of marinara sauce on their pizza pies.

Great place for lunch if you're on the go. I recommend this place as a must go for people who are not natives to New York.

Had a slice of the Sicilian and the meat pizza.  Both were of greasy goodness of what pizza should be.  I enjoyed the Sicilian much better due to the thicker crust which was nice and crunchy.    It was simple and tasty.  Both slices satisfied my craving for a Pizza during my trip.
