Koreatown, Los Angeles, CA
I love Pizza Paul's. This is a true mom-and-pop place run by an Italian guy and his wife, and definitely stands out as one of my favorite pizza joints in the city.
I usually get the gourmet pizza (letter B) which has artichokes, spinach, garlic, and anchovies. It has a decent crust, and it's very flavorful. This is the first place where I've had anchovies on pizza, and now I'm hooked! The prices are a little on the high end. With tax, it comes to about $27 for a 20-inch version of letter B. Also, the surrounding area is also a bit sketchy, but there is security in the parking lot to watch over your car.
You can also head to nearby Scoops for ice cream after, which I'm also a big fan of. Overall, fantastic place and I do recommend it. -

It seems like whenever I'm here, there's no one else there. Which makes me wonder if I'm missing something. It's so quiet at Pizza Pauls. Eerily quiet. Like a prelude to a horror movie where you might be killed and ground up and used to make the next batch of meatballs.
But once you get to talking to the old guy who seems to run the place, he's pretty cool, and I'm convinced that he's not using any human flesh in his meatballs. It's seems to be just him and a little old lady in the kitchen. The quintessential mom and pop joint, I guess.
I haven't tried anything other than the pizza. But the pizza is pretty good! Nothing earth shattering. But fairly decent. I'll go back again. And I have... twice already.
Still haven't seen any other customers, but since this place has been reviewed numerous times before, there's got to be others. Maybe I'll see y'all next time! -

Stopped by this place because it is close to where I live and boy am I glad I did! There are several great things about it!
I ordered the 1/2 ravioli and 1/2 spaghetti and despite the pasta being a little overcooked, the flavorful sauce and gracious portion was fantastic! I added meatballs and they were a delight. The garlic bread was a true highlight.
Great house wine for 5.00 bucks was a nice touch too! I've been to several Italian restaurants here in LA but few have the great value that Paul's presented to me. I was able to have a very filling dinner with a glass of wine for under $20 and that is a bargain here!
The only con is the service is not amazing. I am forgiving of minor service flaws including unfriendly waiting, and I can see why some people would complain about it. But hey, it's a small mom and pop pizza place so I don't expect much from honest workers who have been at it for longer than I have been alive.
I will be back and I suggest you try Pizza Paul's too! -

Came here while waiting at a Tattoo shop across the street, i had a all meat calzone and side of meatballs. The food was good, owners were nice, i did feel a little hesitant after hearing complaints from others of the rudeness the owners can express, but i had a good experience. All in all I recommend it, food was good.

Ah, the quarter life crisis. Where you drastically cut off everything that reminds you of your past in one swift and poorly thought out move to Los Angeles. On the bright side, this impulsivity forces you out of your comfort zone as you search for a new comfort zone in the form of pizza joint down the street. You enter the tough looking building covered with ivy only to find the startling contrast of its interior- small, warm, quaint. You order the Sicilian because you like the simple combination of mozerella, parmesean, basil and olive oil.
As you leave with the warm doughy opiate in hand, the owner insists that you take 2 very large and fresh jalepenos. The pizza...thin-crust delicious and all topings harmonious, but the jalepenos adds a contrasting zing to make it perfect. Briefly you feel as though everything will be okay. -

OK I'm from Connecticut so when I came to California I swore there was not a good place to eat pizza until I came here they use fresh ingredients which it shows there crust is thin so you taste the topping. The atmosphere is is adorable just like the 2 owners they are sweet and kind and welcome you like you are family. This is by far the best pizza place that I have visited here in California.
I suggest trying this unique place even if its a little bit of a drive its so worth it.
No your going to find a large pizza for $5.00 why because they use real ingredients real mozzarella cheese not the processed stuff real beef, real sausage not stuff thats processed to look like it..Hope you enjoy -

When I lived in L.A. I worked nearby from Paul's. Always with a thin crust it was the best pizza I had in L.A. Back then Paul would deliver, 5-10 at a time to my workplace or 1 to my home. I don't know if Paul Moteghi is still the owner, but he was always pleasant & very accomodating. I began eating here in the late 70's, when Paul opened after selling Arthur J's, a wonderful late nite hangout on Highland at Santa Monica. A J's is looong gone but it seems Pizza Paul's endures.
For me the best pizza was a large with everything on it- perfectly savory & perfectly cooked every time. -

I've never felt less welcome in a restaurant during dinner hours before.
There's just some terrible vibe I got with the silence, the under-eager and slow moving staff, and a few other clues. Let me explain.
So a friend of mine and I had always wanted to try this place. We'd driven by so many times, and it looked like a nice little mom-and-pop place. And it turned out to be a little more like mom-and-pop-in-law.
There's a soda fountain just as you'd find in any regular food joint, you know, when you push the little lever and soda spills into the glass, then the server slops it onto your drink onto your table with disdain, then you complain on the internet. It's 2011 and this is how we dine.
So when I ordered a coke, I anticipated it served in a glass with some ice made from the finest tap water. Instead, we were given a single can of coke. For a dollar eighty-five.
We didn't feel like pizza, but the place seemed to have a good selection of pasta and sandwiches so we ordered our dishes and proceeded to wait.
And wait we did.
My friend was served first. He got the ravioli. He wasn't too enthusiastic.
Then I watched them make my pastrami sandwich.
It was bread. Cheese. Pastrami. That's it. No peppers, no onions, it wasn't even served with mustard. It was completely dull. Just the minimum definition of a sandwich. Meat and bread. While this is fine for puritans, it's not what you'd expect for seven bucks. I can get a better sandwich at Subway.
Maybe the pizza's amazing, but I'm not holding my breath.
And the entire time, I just felt like my being there wasn't desired. Which explains the empty dining room at 6:30 at night. -

Maybe it's just me, but I like the challenge of grumpy old people who serve me at THEIR restaurant and the guy here is grumpy, grumpy, Snow White can eat s(*&^ for breakfast grumpy. But I'm new. To the regulars seated beside me, he was really relaxed and nice. !!Challenge!!
So, I stay and eat great, I-miss-home, go Green Bay!, pizza. And, my 4yr-old son eats up an entire plate of spaghetti and sops up the meat sauce with the garlic bread completely bypassing his usual "I don't like meat, its too chewy" "I don't like food covering my whole plate" "Is that green? that looks green to me" kvetching. So, who cares if bottled water gets you an Arrowhead served with a styrofoam cup rather than Pellegrino?
I think if I were born here in LA, I'd emotional, cap locks a review for the awesomeness of the pizza. But, I'm not. So, I'll just say that in a pinch, I would drive here and eat pizza/spaghetti, even though I'm Korean and I live in Koreatown AND my favorite type of food is Ethiopian.
Finally, the bathrooms are clean. Modest, but every inch is scrubbed to death. Fundamentals, people. Frickin', fundamentals. -

6 of us shared the bbq chicken, prosciutto and the vegetarian pizzas and all were quite good indeeed!I also had their only wine by glass and it was just ok. Wished they had a few more choices. Will definitely go back esp. since the owner was telling us that business is not doing well!ITo me, it's really to do w the "attractiveness" of the frontage - I have been to Pure:Luck+Scoops (both nearby) and have NEVER even noticed this restaurant exists! Recommended.

This was the best pizza I have had in entire life. Seriously. Best Pizza in LA.
*** I have just eaten another pizza from them and I can attest that is everything I had claimed it was! ... Also, you should go there soon cause this couple who runs the place is old and they wont be working their pizza joint forever**** Viva Pizza Paul!!!!!! -

I've lived up the street from this joint all of my life and always wondered why we never went to Pizza Pauls. Well, last night I gave it a try and now I know why. Terrible! I had the eggplant dish and it was the worst. Four little circles of eggplant plopped on top of overcooked spagetti, drenched in sauce, and then covered with some cold shreaded mozzella. WTF? Not even baked in the oven so that the cheese melts, bubbles, and browns. It was more like little pieces of string cheese tossed on top. And the guys personality was anything but grand-fatherly. Maybe the pizza is good but I won't return to find out based on this performance.

If the joker ate here, he'd be so impressed with general humanity, he would put down his fork (still loaded with delicious spaghetti) and really, genuinely smile.
If Michael Vick ate here, he would stop halfway through the oh-so-perfect crust of a calzone and realize that dog fighting is immoral (and then realize that pokemon isn't too much different).
If Goldman Sachs executives actually sat down and shared a 16" pizza that's HANDMADE by the wife of the owner (who also works there), they would realize that cheating investors and creating shitty, imaginary crap that did nothing good for the economy is wrong.
If Hurricane Katrina even blew through this joint and took a bite out of the delicious salads, she would be nothing more than a whisper of flatulence that has the same brevity and importance as Beiber.
But alas, only the best of the best have come here and those who have left the mom and pop restaurant have finally tasted real, homemade food.
Oh and there's not much air conditioning. -

Okay, Pizza Paul's is really a great place to grab some pizza if the mood strikes you. This joint is on the list of my top 10 favorite pizza places in LA, and I'll give you a quick run-down of why:
- Walking distance from our place
- Pizza is delicious and unique; you will remember a slice from this place later on! I recommend the Sicilian w/ added pepperoni.
- Great sauce, quality ingredients, the crust is soft yet crispy and is flavored a bit with garlic
- The place is quaint and cute... the owners are an elderly couple who are so sweet. I watched the wife prepare our pizza with her loving hands
- $4 glasses of very good wine (Spanish tempranillo); $5 bottles of 32 oz Fat Tire Beer
It's a little on the pricier side... our pizza was about $28 for an extra large, but it was damn good. I think the price is definitely worth it, and I watch my wallet. This is a great little spot to have dinner... my advice: gorge yourself on the pizza, get tipsy on some cheap beer and/or wine, then walk down the street to Scoops for some ice cream. A great night, ready made. You're welcome!!! -

One night I'll go on a date here. We'll sit alone by the rain-streaked window facing Melrose and stare at the people at Scoops and the cars kicking up water.
I'll feed her slices of crispy thin crust and sweet nothings like: "you have the biggest, best eyes ever," and, "c'mon, you're saying you couldn't have picked off the pepperoni?"
"No, I couldn't," she would say.
"Why?" I'd respond.
"Because my hands would get greasy," she'd say.
"Well I think it's a small price to pay for my happiness, don't you think?" I'd respond
"You know how I am with meat," she'd say.
"Yeah, I'll say," I'd say.
After a long silence kept unawkward by the delicious thin crust and a magnum of cabernet I'd say, "I forgot my wallet."
"You always forget your wallet," she'd say.
"But this time it wasn't intentional," I'd respond. She'd be angry but I wouldn't care because I'd be so ecstatic I didn't have to foot the bill and because the pizza'd be so fantastic, I'd feel like I were swimming in a lake of liquefied love.
And we would be happy. -

Going here is like visiting your Italian grampa. Paul really takes care of you and treats you like family. I agree that the general ambiance of the place is not ideal for dining, but you really SHOULD eat there to take advantage of Pizza Paul's generous hospitality (though don't be afraid to approach him at the counter if you need something - he's much more of an owner than a waiter).
Also to be noted: Typically when I order pizza at other places, I get white pizza (I'm not a huge fan of red sauce), but here - the sauce is the best part! Whatever you order here - if it comes with marinara - it's guaranteed to be DELICIOUS. -

NO star at all.
this was the worst excuse for food i've ever had.
my friend picked up an order from there, since it's right next to mondo.
the tomato sauce on the spaghetti had one flavor: bitter.
the chicken caesar salad had slices of processed chicken on it and the tiny amount of "dressing" on the romaine had nothing to do with an actual caesar dressing.
at all.
EXTREMELY disappointing.
i don't know how they can run a business.
i only heard the pizza is supposed to be good. -

Pizza Pauls has a great vibe --you feel like you're at one of those old-school Brooklyn pizza joints for a second. We came here a couple nights ago and for a sec we thought it was closed but were greeted by Paula and his wife (funny the "empty restaurants" were mentioned on Yelp's Talk: http://www.yelp.com/to...).
I really wanted to rate Pizza Pauls higher cuz the ma & pa shops are a dying breed, but after eating Di Fara's in Brooklyn I am spoiled...it was a sad sight watching my slice drooped...we had a pepperoni and mushroom pizza...and it was ok. Now the ice tea was a different story...it tasted like Chinese medicine I sh*t you not.
If we come here again, I'll try their calzones and no ice teas for me please.Listed in: Pizza Galore!

Food was OK. not as good as expected by reading others review. Had the Calzone , large portion, but nothing spectacular. one note . the soda machine was broken , OK But If I ask for a Diet Coke and you give me a Diet Pepsi, guess what .. not the same .While I was waiting ,3 people asked if you sell pizza by the slice , Answer was no, run your business the way you like, but you are losing business that way. since I made a special trip , and not from the area . I will not return .

Los Angeles, CA
Sometimes, I just feel like an evening out in a homey type of place owned by good people with failed actors' headshots from the 80's on the wall and a salad with no schmancy lettuce.
Love the pizza with pepperoni, & garlic - you'll have garlic breath for days, but you won't care, it is so good. Also a big fan of the cold turkey and chicken parm. sandwiches. Pastas are good too, I liked his alfredo.
Pizza Paul is great addition to the neighborhood - he is always making sure the street lights aren't out, and I once saw him kick some thug's a** who was throwing trash on the sidewalk even before it hit the ground. Plus he always tries to give us a free bottle of soda or something when we order from him - my friend from NY is embarrassed by this so he makes me go for him now.
I love Paul - agree with the other reviews. He is a real character. Call and ask if they deliver, I saw him delivering to my workplace one time and asked if he didn't deliver before...his explanation was, "PARKING TICKET!!"
Enough said. -

After a little bit of a moment with the man I can only assume is Paul, what with me changing my order at least three times, I finally settled on my test of all Italian places. The Spaghetti with meatballs and sausage. You know when you type it out it sound gross. Say it with me, Sausage... ugh.
Okay anyway, theirs was pretty good - not great, not bad - better than most I've had in LA.
Do not come for the ambiance this is a little store front that is dark, glass-top tables and a TV playing dancing with the stars. Definitely a come in and grab to-go, or maybe a quick bite type place.
The pizza looked good, thin crust chewy on the inside and a crisp crust... Might just be a winner. But that'll have to wait until my next adventure at PIZZA PAUL! -
Review from Vincent V.
Santa Clara, CA
I happen to be Asian and I feel I have an Italian grandpa and grandma at Pizza Paul's. It's a wonderful little Italian restaurant next to Mondo Videos.
It's not the best food, but there is a home-made quality to the food since they're all prepared by Paul's wife. You could literally see the kitchen from any table, and you see Paul's wife cooking the pasta, needing the pizza dough, and preparing fresh salads.
The review by Sara F. is dead-on when she says that the best choices are the ones with marinara. I don't know if its home-made, but the sauce is excellent. The pizza here is one of my favorites as it's relatively thin, soft on the inside, crisp, and has just the correct amount of sauce and cheese.
My favorite item is the calzone. No, this isn't what you'd find in a Hot-Pocket. The calzone here is literally the size of a small pizza. Use a knife to cut open a bit, and you'll find cheese and marinara sauce literally pours out of it.
The sandwiches here all are similar. They are submarine sandwiches. They are friggin' huge. I think a regular size is something like 8 inches. They are freshly prepared, and you can't lose with any of the sandwiches.
Paul himself is the server, and he seems like he could literally be from a Italian mob movie. He has a natural scowl, but he's a very kind man. He's a very good server and gives ample re-fills. But because of his age, there's time he forget that you're there so do yourself a favor and pay for your food by walking towards the register and not wait for a check to come. -

Ok, where is the negative star rating when you need it! I just called and asked, "How much is a 1 topping large pizza" and the guy that answered the phone started yelling at me. I'm not sure of every word he said but it wasn't nice. He then said, "We are busy!" and hung up on me. What a jerk!
I called for a pizza, not to be insulted. -
Review from Megan P.
The owner's make you feel like family and the pizza is phenomenal. In fact, it's the only place I ever order Pizza. Try the Mexican, Sicilian, and Hawaiian. All delicious! Plus, 8 inch subs for under 5 bucks (on average). I usually order their Turkey sandwich but their pizza sandwich and meatball are pretty good too!
Best Calzones your taste buds will ever have the joy of encountering. -

What else can I say that hasn't been said by everyone else.... Awesome pizza, the meatball sandwich is delicious, and its not too pricey.
Paul and his wife are one of the nicest people to talk to while you're there, treating you like family when you grab a bite to eat at this little restaurant. -

apparently, paul is BI-POLAR... because I did not see the "sweet" "grandpa-like" paul that others write about.... who I saw was a GRUMPY, mean, old man!
when I arrived he scolded my friend for sitting at a table (and not in a cute, grandpa-like kinda scold)... he was downright mean! so mean, that she was scared to go pay him at the end of our meal... and she said he was rude to her then, too!
pepperoni pizza was GOOD (not great, and no where close to NY style pizza... who are these reviewers, anyway?!) but not good enough to make up for the RUDE service. -

I love their calzone, whenever I ordered vegetarian calzone( I'm not a vegetarian, but just prefer to have vegetarian dish) he started lecturing at me that I won't live longer just because I'm eating healthy. I thought he was mad at me somehow, but I guess that was his way of friendly gesture. The calzone is fresh and huge, I can save a left over and eat it for next day's lunch and dinner. I haven't tried their pizza yet, but their eggplant parmesan sandwich is pretty good as well.

Pizza Paul has been there for 35 years, and there's a reason: their food is pretty good, and the place has a great vibe. The food is OK, and reasonably priced, and once Paul gets to know you, like everybody else says, he & the Mrs. treat you like family they like. At one time, he told me he had something like 6 delivery people working for him, but now you either eat in, or get it to go. Recommended, especially if you live in the area. This is the kind of pizza/Italian joint every neighborhood wishes they had. Better than OK food, and great people.

The sandwiches, pizza, and calzone are tasty but stay away from their chicken parmigiana! Cute and cozy place to have a quick bite. Paul always offers me jalapenos whenever I order anything. It's really a sweet gesture.

Arcadia, CA
Dishes were a little dirty, food was okay, TV was a little loud. A true Italian mom & pop establishment. The combo pizza was decent and the jalapenos really added a kick. The meatlovers calzone was pretty tasty. For a guy that's not that picky with Italian food, I'd come back again. I can picture some people being disappointed though. The mom & pop were blasting their huge LCD TV. Kind of a big contrast with the dated 10 year old autographed picture of a skinny Matt LeBlanc on the wall. It's funny that they don't serve ice cream here. Guess they know their neighbors pretty well. Some good ole Spumoni would really give this place a boost though. Either that or some Italian cookies shaped like bicycles. That'll really get the locals involved!

pizza paul is a diamond in the middle of nowhere! don't try the pasta or anything else. the only reason to come here is for the thin crust pizza which is AMAZING!!! my fave is the spinach and prosciutto - magnifico!!!
there is an added bonus if you are a pro wrestling fan, as paul always has it playing on the lcd screen. -

Excellent food. The pizza is killer mondo awesome. Also the "pizza sandwich" - a torpedo topped with Italian meats and cheese - is very good. Nice place. Cheap prices for great quality. The table was dirty and the tv was too loud, but I didn't mind that since the food was so good.

The best pizza I have tried in Los Angeles so far. Amazing. It took me a while to find a good pizza....
The Sicilian and the Mexican are amazing... Like everyone says, Paul and his wife greet you like you are part of the family, and she makes the pizzas herself. They are the cutest and friendliest restaurant owners in town.
I REPEAT: BEST PIZZA IN LOS ANGELES, so if you are an Eastsider like me, you are LUCKY -

My favorite Pizza that I've had so far in L.A.
Paul and his wife are so kind. Don't be afraid to go up to the counter to ask for refills or the check! Paul is always scowling it seems, but he's a sweetheart. We always get the combo pizza and if we're really hungry we order the pepperoni and sausage calzone! The Calzone's are huge and so good! If you order for pickup, Paul calls you when your order is ready! -

Nice little quaint hole in the wall kind of place. Of course it is overshadowed by the other businesses in the area like scoops and the "hipster" hangouts, but this place is not bad at all. A friend and I visited this place, as he said the man, "Paul" was a really nice and respectable guy. As you walk in, you see glass top tables with an assorted variety of postcards under them, as well as signed autographs of actors such as Matt Leblanc. A chalkboard stating they have $3 glasses of California and Italian wine. You can tell this place doesn't have that much business and the ones that do come in are loyal to this place. My friend ordered a pizza as well as a sandwich. When the food came, we grabbed the scalding hot slices of pizza. It tasted like hot cheese, mushroom and pepperoni soup poured on top of a thin crust, surprisingly good, and worth getting your tongue burned. The sandwich was ok, just normal on a roll that was too crispy for me. As I was getting the check, I was told that Paul frowns upon tips being left at the table, so I just gave his wife taking the check $40 and left.
