Not sure why I never reviewed this before but overall as must have said their pizza is tasty, fast and cheap.
I do have to say - of some of the other NY style pizzerias in area, I really enjoy their pizzas! -
Review from Diana Y.
not really ny style pizza. it is not even all that cheap per slice. Was it $7.50 for two slices? I wanted to like it, but the pizza was tolerable.
unfortunate because I had to make up for it by eating something yummy RIGHT after. because i never like to end a meal with a meh taste in my mouth. -
Review from Tricia K.
Pizza Mercato is a "goold old place" that probably counts among its fan base NYU students who appreciate the fast service, central location and reliable, cheap food.
Being such an alum, I have fond memories of getting lunch here on a cold day and appreciating the warmth while catching up on reading on one of the bar seats.
The pizza is okay, the entrees are a bit bettter, and still reasonably priced. There'll always be a place in my heart, though, for the student staple slice and drink (fruit punch) of course. -

hmmmm, this pizza was good tasting, but I found the crust was too thick. I ordered delivery for a lazy night in, and it satisfied the hunger tooth.

This is one of the few pizza places in NY that doesn't have a sign outside saying they're the best in the world. Despite their humility, they're pretty damn good.
Service is quick, the selection of pizza is great, and the price isn't bad. Try the Margherita or Chicken Alfredo. -
Review from Edgar S.
I could'nt agree more with some of these reviews. First off, this pizza is decent at most. The only reason why it does so well is because it's cheap and in a prime location.
I ordered up a regular slice and it was just that...regular. Nothing to it. The staff are as blah as the slices. I waited until the cashier stopped laughing at who knows what, before she rang me up (while I'm staring at her with my $ in my hand.)
Next time, I'll just walk by as I recommend you do too.

New York, NY
This place is cheap. Super cheap. Around the corner from the Tisch School of the Arts you have pizza by the slice ... kind of. I went only because of the buy 2 slices get 1 drink free Foursquare deal. Total damage was about $4.75. Ridiculously cheap. Still ... not worth it. I got a slice of the regular and Neapolitan and both slices were flavorless without much sauce. Or if there was sauce ... it was flavorless. The crust was very hard and stale and really ... one of the worst pizzas I've had in NYC. You know what it is like? ... if you have ever stooped low and got a DiGiorno frozen pizza .... over cooked it a bit ... then let it sit on the counter for a few hours. The flavor/taste/texture is nearly identical. Do yourself a favor ... Ray's is like a 2 minute walk towards St. Marks Place. Got there instead ... it's infinitely better than Mercato. But hey ... if you're trying to save money it doesn't get much cheaper than Mercato. But "is it worth it"? IMO ... no. Spend the extra buck and go elsewhere.
Oh ya ... you are seriously gonna smell like a pizza oven after going here. Like processed fake cheese sodium nitrate frozen pizza. It's really gross. I considered going over to the NYU Center for Genomics & Systems Biology just to make sure my DNA was still in a double helix after visiting this place. -
Review from Grace C.
Prices are fair for this place. A lot of clubs and dorms order from Pizza Mercato and I never get sick of it. Had their pasta slice and it was a good amount of pasta! Can't go wrong here.
Friendly and fast service. Pizza slice goes for $2.25 i believe -

New York, NY
this place is nastay and my experience affirms all the previous reviews: people (probably nyu students) order from here because of cheapness and convenience, not because the food is good. tonight it was rainy and cold and i wanted to order hot food close in the area. i got the chicken parmesan with baked ziti and the cheese was rubbery and tasteless; sauce lacking and without flavor;chicken breaded and fried--but white! the only perk was that i got my food like within six minutes of ordering. curious...?
overall, i'd never order from here again if i could check out other options but it sufficed to scarf down hot food for this starving student (for like $8 with tip). -

I've reviewed the now closed Pizza Mercato on 34th and Lexington and wrote about the great deals and decent pizza. This Pizza Mercato is the same, but with better deals. I almost always get the two plain slices and soda for $3.95. There's also a deal on two topping slices and soda for $5.95 (I may be wrong, I haven't gotten that deal in a while). This restaurant also has a section for pasta and a salad bar. I've seen a steaming bowl of meatballs and I have to try them soon.
This place is a great place for a quick bite to eat, especially if you go to NYU, which is right there and great for the limited pocket money of a college student. They also have better pizza than their surrounding pizza like Famous Famiglia. -
Review from Bria D.
There is nothing amazing about Pizza Mercato. However, it beats the other pizza joints on the north side of Waverly by a mile. There's nothing offensive in their flavors--sauce isn't too sweet, dough isn't soggy, toppings taste like they should. A mushroom slice and a medium root beer run me $5. It's a quick stop before running along to my classes. Service is efficient and friendy.
These things don't add up to amazing, but they do add up to a good reason for a weekly stop. I'll be back...and back...and back. -
Review from Shawn A.
Astoria, NY
Decent, completely average slice. But the memories (oh, the memories!) make me love this place so much more.
It was Thanksgiving 2002 (or some Thanksgiving the year before or after... things are fuzzy, and I refer to 2000 - 2008 as the forgotten years (not for any particular reason. Just because it sounds awesome))
But anyway... Thanksgiving 2002. Home from college for a quick bit, and using the time to catch up with friends you don't really get to see anymore. Well, what did we USED to do all the time? Besides sit in each others basements, watch VHSes and argue about Star Wars. Ah yes... eat a lot of Pizza.
So we each agreed to hold back from our food coma inducing Thanksgiving feasts so we could rendezvous in the ci-tay and chow down on some 'za. (Thankfully, we never actually talked like that.)
But turns out, restaurants tend to take the night off on Thanksgiving. So after blowing past some of our usual Pizza Patrol stops that were locked up for the night, we found ourselves at Pizza Mercato, who were not only open - but really brought their A-game that night.
In the years since, Mercato's continued existence has been marked by uneven slices, but a night like that does not go unnoticed by this Pizza fan.Listed in: New York Pizza Patrol

I went to NYU for grad school and spent many a day in the library. Lucky for me, this pizza place just so happens to be oh so close to said library.
Two slice of plain and a soda for $3.95. Really? Yes, really. Good size slices, enough soda to wash it down with, and great service.
I walk in - tell the guy what I want and in about five minutes, I'm munching on piping hot slices that put a smile (and sauce) on my face. You might think for the price, you'd walk away with a bad quality pizza but not the case. I think the pizza here is great and the price-point likely works for them due to the high volume of students/university employees that go here daily.
Not much seating inside but slices were meant to be folded up and thrown back while walking anyway. :-)
Check it out! -

Never even tried the Pizza, go figure! I am a fan of Pizza Mercato because of their affordable/tasty salads and pasta dishes that never come to more than 6.95 with a drink included. Quick service and friendly staff.

gross. 2 brothers is better... it's right down the street... AND it's $1.00 per slice. Once you've had that crack as a slice, places like PIzza Mercato just have a hard time living up to the greatness.

I ordered something from here for the first time despite passing it every day for the past several months. I know this is a popular eatery for the NYU students who don't want to travel more than 10 blocks out of their comfort zone.
The meatball calzone was huge but decent. It was insanely cheesy though, and the meatballs were actually really thin slices of meat sandwiched between fat layers of oozing cheese. Insane. The marinara sauce helped everything balance out, but that was one gooey mess. I think I'll be good without another meal for the rest of the week.
Decent for a targeted-for-college-kids joint. But beware: this isn't some restaurant where you can sit down and enjoy your meal. It's cramped, so it's better to buy your food and get the hell outta there. Washington Square Park makes for a nice outdoor seating area when birds, dogs, and drug dealers aren't constantly circling around you. -
Review from Arthur Z.
I live in New York. Consequently, I love pizza zomggg. PIzza Mercato is not pizza. At least not to me. I would be ashamed to take an out-of-stater here to let them experience the fame of NY pizza.
The things that make this place popular among the NYU kids is its location and price. It's right next to Washington Square Park, and they have a two slice-one soda meal for about $4.50. That's a great price! Especially for Manhattan!
But alas, the pizza is of the crappy caliber. It is extremely bready/doughy, with fine breadcrumbs powdering off onto your hands and lips as you eat. If you like thincrust pizza, this is not the place for you. Even for thick crust lovers, the dough is bland, the breadcrumbs are asphyxiating, and the cheese and sauce (which are barely accounted for) are not pleasing. I can beast through a normal entire pizza pie with little to modest effort, but with this thick, bready pizza, I could only finish 6 or 7 slices. BOO!
The only reason you should come here is for gruel which you can quickly and cheaply stuff in your face cavity. -
Review from Lisa Q.
You can get better pizza probably just about anywhere else. The garlic knots are pretty decent. The only pizza I'd get here is the eggplant. The regular slices are be quite nasty.
I'll go here if I'm desperately hungry before class. It could actually get pricey here if you order ala carte instead of following their specials. -
Review from Rachel A.
Yaaaaaay! Pizzzzzzza! Cheap. Pizzzzzzza!
Pizza Mercato never fails me. This is a true hole in the wall and student staple. This place is definitely student driven. I have spent many a snack and dinner time with friends at Pizza Mercato. We were poor college students and when we didn't have the money to splurge at Uno's, Pizza Mercato was it for us.
Ordering is simple. Just go for the special. The drink is a true "small". You will be so thirsty after eating 1/2 a slice because there is so much cheese and grease on the pizza, you will need more soda to quench your thirst. Pizza Mercato is a great fix for when you are craving cheese pizza. You can even add more parmesan cheese on to your slice once you sit down.
Pizza Mercato is like the pizza parlor for junkies. It will give you a temporary high. And with prices this low, you will have to roll your dice or flip a quarter to decide where you should spend your 3 bucks- at Grey's Papayas or Pizza Mercato? It's a toss up. But whenever I want to get grounded and go back to those pre-salary days, I head to Pizza Mercato.Listed in: Pizza! Pizza! or Pie in NY

Cheap and fast pizza delivery for massive quantities for NYU events.
They serve a lot of pizza, it comes fast, and is usually decent pizza. Nothing special about most of the slices, though.
Cheap, too. -
Review from Dana F.
Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner of the prestigious The Only Reason You're in Business is Because of Your Proximity to the NYU Campus award.
I have done some soul searching to come up with some redeeming qualities for Mercato, but have come up empty-handed. I don't care that it's only $4 for 2 slices and a soda. It could be that I'm extremely jaded after 4 years of being served rubber cheese on corrugated cardboard. Or maybe I'm sick of CAS girls complaining about their Intro to Psych midterm. Either way, there are much better places in the neighborhood to grab lunch. -

I don't know why NYU seems to always order Pizza Mercato. I must've eaten it around twice a month for the past 4 months, and I feel like I need to get the anger off my chest.
There is absolutely no taste in the pizza slices; the bread feels like cardboard and the rest of it tastes like it too. Worst of all, even without any proper discernible taste, the pizza is saturated with oil. The only reason Mercato manages 2 stars is because like many pizzas, its still edible, even though it's terrible in comparison to other NY pizzas. Try not to come here because there are many other pizza joints in the Village area much more worthy to dish out money on.Listed in: Pizzas of NYC

Jersey City, NJ
As any NYU student will tell you, Pizza Mercato is where you go if you are:
a) rushing between classes during a time where every other place is packed with weary students
b) craving a quick slice of pizza
c) drunk off pre-gaming
Greasy but fresh, cheap but mildly lackluster, Pizza Mercato is the perfect hole-in-the-wall pizza place, a no-frills joint that doesn't even really try to pretend its salad and meal bar is any good. Like I said, the pizza here is greasy and not exactly stellar, but it'll do, especially when you just want a slice of pepperoni without having to wait an hour and paying twice as much somewhere else. I wouldn't really recommend anything beyond the pizza or garlic knots--I had the chicken roll, and it was kind of awful--but that's good enough for this place.
There is seating inside, but during peak meal times, you'll be hard-pressed to get a seat at the dirty-looking red bars. Do yourself a favor and take your pizza to Washington Square Park or, if you're an NYU student, across the street to the bottom floor lounge of Waverly.
This is also the perfect place to order a pie from, as the cheap price gives you the biggest bang for your buck. No wonder every single NYU student organization orders from here (and yes, the delivery is very prompt).
Bathroom Grade: N/A. Then again, I wouldn't really want to use a bathroom here anyway.Listed in: Oh, right, I should eat

Been here a few times and really enjoy it, despite the NYU crowd. The sauce on their pizza is a little sweet and has such a fresh flavor, a little different than I find elsewhere in the city, and that's why I like it. $2.25 for a slice of cheese. Workers are friendly and can always find a place to sit. Easy lunch or dinner if you're in the area.

I have grabbed a slice here before class many times. The food, prices and selection are good. No CC min, thank god......and they have fountain soda. Sometimes I stop before class for just a huge diet coke!

Review from Dan F.
Pizza looked good. Wasn't really impressed though. Its like I was eating something that KINDA had a cheese flavor and KINDA had a cheese texture and KINDA tasted like there was some bread and sauce mixed in.
No Personality or Taste. Most likely won't be back. -
Review from Elaine T.
i have this pizza at least once a month. My NYU group always orders Pizza Mercato for our monthly meetings. We always order from here because it's well-priced and decent pizza. NYU students get a discount I believe. I would grab a slice here if it's conveniently located but wouldn't make a far trek out for it.

As a pizza fan, you may ask why i am reviewing a random pizza joint such as Pizza Mercato. Well, the fact of the matter is you will not find a more authentic (and reasonably prices) slice of new york style pizza any where else in this area.
In an area full of overpriced, and sub par pizza spots (aka famigilia) and fancy pizza shops (otto & patsy's - which i both love don't get me wrong) pizza mercato stands as pizza, the way i grew up and remember it from my old neighborhood, with Gooey cheese and yummy sauce. -
Review from Jess L.
Pretty basic but one-step-above-pure-grease pizza joint. It can get crowded, but the line moves pretty quickly. Got a pretty good slice of white pizza with cheese and spinach. It was not doused in oil, so that was really awesome. I admired their veggie slices, too, which were stacked with thick veggies. They have a lot of by-the-slice options for lunchtime goers.

New York, NY
The Pizza ain't great. In fact, it tastes like cheese-covered cardboard. But that's not the point. When you're a starving NYU student (which is half of the population, the other being trust-fund hipsters), a $3.50 for two slices and a drink deal is a God send, particularly between classes. The line is never longer than four people, there are places to sit along the bar and mirror in the tiny room, and you can hop back out to your class quickly.
Truly, this is a one-star place. But for sustaining me through the literal lean years of my college life (when I weighed about thirty pounds less than I do now) AND for the fact that you're the fastest pizza delivery service in town, I'm granting you an extra two stars, Mercatz. You deserve it.
FOOD: Awful pizza for an awfully good price.
SERVICE: No nonsense. In fact, I'm not sure these guys know many words in English besides "Cheese", "Slice", and "That one, right there". Which ain't a bad thing, I'll tell you, because when you're in a hurry, you don't want to be jawing with somebody.
Yeah, yeah. They serve calzones and meat pies and whathaveyou, but considering the quality of the pizza, I wouldn't touch that stuff with a ten foot pole. Thou hast been warned, wayfarer! -
Review from Tina C.
This pizzeria primary serve the Greenwich Village vincity-mainly to New York University students and staff. On a Saturday afternoon prior to meeting a friend to assist with her dissertation, we ordered four garlic knots at $1.25 on-the-go which were okay as it sustained my appetite briefly. Price is very moderate which fits today's ailing economy especially students or the miserly.

I've ordered pies delivered from Pizza Mercato, never actually stopped by. I've had their pizza as part of my search for the perfect NY slice, and I'd have to say it was just okay. Good enough that my relatives from out of town were impressed by "NY pizza", but I've definitely had better in the city and the rest of the tri-state area. I may find myself ordering a pie with peppers and sausage again at some point in the future, but if I'm in the village and need a slice, there are much better places to go.

I've gone to this place twice and both times I was completely disappointed. I went first for the cheap lunch special, two slices and a soda for less than 5 bucks sounded OK, but the pizza was just terrible. I went a second time thinking that maybe it was the lunch special pizza that was awful and not the actual regular slices. I was wrong! Not only was it bad, but the pizza guy gave me the smallest most narrow slice in the pizza shop, then smirked as though he had won some kind of prize. I won't be back.

There is only one reason to go to Pizza Mercato...and that's for the $3 special for 2 cheese slices and a tiny drink. You stand at the counter and load up your slices with all the seasoning shakers (I would always pound the garlic shaker), and you're good to go. Gourmet pizza it's not, but it definitely hits the spot, although the tiny drink will leave you thirsty afterwards (ask for no ice in your drink to get you an extra ounce of drink). Finding a seat can be difficult during busy hours, and this isn't a place for the claustrophobic. A place that has its flaws and quirks, but it feels so routine it feels like home.
