One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
Yum! Really delicious pizza and a great spot to hang in the area. I was in Minneapolis on business and was directed to this pizza joint. Here's why I love it:
-T/W Gluten Free pizza menu!
-neat spot to hang in the warehouse area of downtown, close to bars and other nighttime establishments
-creative pizzas
-area to the right just for walk ins or a quick bite, more sit down restaurant area to the left
-some of the most delicious pizza I've ever had
I really enjoy their pizza, but don't often indulge due to cost. Recently, a friend and I went out for brunch at the DT locale. The food was AMAZING! I had the breakfast burrito with tofu--to die for. I love all of the veggie friendly options they have on their menu. So great!
Service was ok. Parking is ok, depending on when you go. Snagging a free meter on Sunday is totally ace. The food did take a while to arrive, which was surprising, since they didn't seem terribly busy. Totally worth the wait, though. :)
I wish I could give 3 1/2 stars.
Depending on how you look at it, Pizza Luce is either the high-end pizza joint that just happens to satisfy that greasy pizza craving, or the junk-food pizza joint that just happens to have really awesome toppings, and thus really awesome pizzas.
Regardless of how you look at it, Pizza Luce is a good choice. It is tasty, cheezy, has all the toppings you might want - mashed potatoes and tortillas? sure, why not? Both vegetarian and real sausage? I don't know why you'd want both, but they can do it. The only negative is that it's slightly over-priced for what it is - while they do have some very creative pizzas, it still tastes like Papa Johns.
It is tasty, but for the same price, I choose Galactic 8 times out of 10.
"Your lawyer in practice spends a considerable part of his life in doing distasteful things for disagreeable people who must be satisfied, against an impossible time limit and with hourly interruptions, from other disagreeable people who want to derail the train; and for his blood, sweat and tears he receives in the end a few unkind words to the effect that it might have been done better, and a protest at the size of the fee." -- William Prosser
Prosser ought to know what he's talking about, as he taught at my law school. Which is only several dozen blocks from this place, wherein I met a good friend, who happens also to be a lawyer and also a law school friend, and also an alumni from the same college as me, although he received his diploma almost a decade prior to my matriculation. When we compared notes during the early days of law school, and I informed him that, as we were both now classmates, it seemed to me as though I must have won, he took great exception, although perhaps he doth protest too much. In addition to feeding in different time zones, as counselors, we both feed at opposite ends of the trough: he, with those too poor to be able to follow his advice, me, with those too wealthy to care about my advice.
Pizza Luce is probably a good example of that strange dichotomy. At any given moment, you will find many different portions of the trough, all bellied up to Pizza Luce's trough, feeding together. The ironic-silk-screened-tee-shirt-pork-pie-hatted hipster breaks bread and downs brews with the unnecessarily-french-cuffed-with-understatedly- ironic-cuff-linked young professional. The young and tattooed drink with the old and amused. The idealistic sup with the cynical.
Show up when we did, at 3:00 p.m. on a Tuesday, and you can see a truly fascinating slice of society. And, if it was the right Tuesday, you'd see two lawyers get sloppy and argue about who was going to drive home: the one who had already wrecked his good name with one DUI, or the pristine and pure virgin, who had but 3 speeding tickets and 1 parking ticket to his name.
I will pay what I consider perhaps the highest compliment to Pizza Luce: my friend's vegetarian meatball sub contained a substance that, had I not been told was entirely vegetarian, I would have mistaken for a decent ground sausage. My buffalo wings were totally decent, too. And definitely made of meat. I could almost taste the suffering. It was delicious.
One of the things I miss mostly about downtown is the baked potato pizza.. Simply amazing...
Delivery is super quick for Loring park where i used to stomp around.
When I channel-surf, I always end up at the Food Network. And last night, Guy Fieri was at some San Diego pizza joint, doing what he does best (not cooking) - faking orgasms with his mouth.
This had me craving a hot, cheesy pie the following day. Not wanting to eat the crappy pizza from the Aloft's bar, I called up the downtown Pizza Luce remembering clients recommending/mentioning it more than once. And what do you know - they deliver to the my hotel. Big star.
Having spent 15 minutes staring at the online menu, I ran into the problem that flusters me three times a day, every day - I narrowed down to two things but couldn't pick one. Argh. Pulling a desperate hailmary, I thought I'd ask the nice lady on the phone if I could get a half and half, even for a small. "Let me chec - yeah no problem." 2 HUGE STARS.
25 long minutes passed, and my wonderful pie showed up at my door: half baked potato (no really), half shrimp al pesto. It's like having a two-course Italian meal all on chewy, warm dough: you have your tomatoes, broccoli, and mashed potatoes on one side, then you got your pesto shrimp pasta with mozzarella and bianca sauce on the other. Win.
Verdict: 4.5 stars. Only reason PL doesn't get a five is because only legendary pizzerias like Grimaldi's in Brooklyn truly deserve it. Mmm, Grimaldi's.
This place has THE BEST vegan pizza in the world.
I'll be honest. I just don't get it. Every time we have pizza delivered at work, I cringe a little when it comes from Luce. It's not bad when I'm eating it, but without fail, I never feel very good an hour *after* eating it. I just can't see why people rave over these pizzas. I've had WAY better.
We went around 7pm on a Friday evening and found the restaurant to be kinda empty. We chose to sit at one of the tables outside -- which turned out to be a big mistake. Not only was there a child who had snorted half a dozen pixie sticks with the group next to us, but outside is also the prime location for inhaling second hand smoke. Also, it's a little noisy out there.
Aside from these issues, which could have been easily fixed by us having the common sense to get a table inside, everything was pretty good. We ordered the bear, which as described as the pizza you'd get if you won a meat raffle. It had plenty of meat on it and was surprisingly good. However, I only wish they found a way to put other creatures from God's creation on the dough. We also got a really good old fashioned cherry coke with cherries at the bottom. Yummy.
Overall it was good experience at a nice pizza joint -- I'm sure we'll be back again and maybe try the brunch.
Seriously. Good. Pizza.
I never get sick of Pizza Luce. I can't say that about many places that I have visited as many times as I have visited Pizza Luce over the past decade. With classic and contemporary pizza options, you can try anything from Pizza Athena to Baked Potato Pizza, and all of them are tasty. They also offer vegan and vegetarian opttions as well. I would skip the fair-to-middlin' desserts and have an extra piece of pizza.
This is the original Pizza Luce. I've been coming to it for years and it still attracts me for post bar food. Non fast food post bar food is tough to come by in the Twin Cities so Luce is king of the night time world in downtown Minneapolis! A quick slice after bar close will do wonders for you. Their pizzas by the slice are not great by any means... but it sure beats Wendy's. I will add that the security pat downs are getting pretty extreme.
The best part about Pizza Luce is their specialty pizza's. The Wrangler or the vegetarian Rustler are really great. The baked potato pizza is so good but the double carbohydrate dose is intense! I love the grenadine cherry cokes that are half grenadine! The atmosphere, service and decor are always great! By pizza standards it's not the best pizza in the world, but they have so many great gimmicks that they're still one of the best restaurants in the Twin Cities.
Good dough fo' sho. (trying to keep it real for Dan S.) Came here for a quick dinner and we were both happy with the tapenade and then also the Athena pizza. On the Athena we asked to have half of it with the red sauce and the other with the bianca, and we both liked the red much better. They add plenty of toppings and the dough is actually pretty good stuff.
I would love to go back drunk with a slotted spoon and a can opener. Then just go to town on the cans of olives or tomatoes they put the pizzas onto when they put it on your table.
Two words... "the bear". I'm a meat lover when it comes to food in general, but even more so in regards to pizza toppings. "the bear" at Pizza Luce has about 4-5 different types of meat toppings... it's absolutely wonderful. I found this place on http://www.americasbes..., I believe it was #5 on the pizza list and without a question worthy of that praise. Pizza Luce is a small chain currently with 5 locations around the Twin Cities. This location in Downtown Minneapolis is open until 2:30 AM on week nights and 3:30 AM on Fri/Sat... which is not very common for a restaurant in Minneapolis. Aside from the great pizza, it's right in the Warehouse District and serves as the perfect post-2AM-drunken-night-out-on-the-town dining spot.
Decent pie but I'm bored with it. I'll man up and walk through the ghetto clientele, bouncers selling tix to get in, and semi-rude hipster employees for a little post-bar slice or the cold jalapeno tuna salad. Since it's one of the only places (not a chain) that delivers DT, I'll occasionally order it also. Kowalski's in Uptown sells frozen Heggies which is much better tasting and less expensive!
I've only been to this location to satisfy an after bar-close craving for delicious food. Craving satisfied.
There was some sort of $3 entrance fee to get into the restaurant, but it didn't seem to deter anyone as the line was rather well out the door when I got there. The line moved quickly and after having the most invasive pat-down I've ever experienced (seriously, I've been to places that are suppose to be high security and never gotten a pat-down like this), I ordered and paid for my slice of cheese, found some friendly strangers in a booth to chat and sit with (drunk Minnesotans are more welcoming of strangers than sober Minnesotans), and ate up the deliciousness. A, mostly, pleasant experience.
I still love it, of course.
Just wanted to say that I tried their pizza called The Rustler today, and it was AMAZING! They use a tangy & sweet BBQ sauce instead of the normal red sauce on this one, plus banana peppers, red onion, mock duck, and pineapple. We also subbed their vegan rinotta cheese for the mozz & cheddar (as always), as I don't do dairy.
It was a great change from the regular Fresh Veggie pizza or the Mock Muffaletta, which are my stand-bys. I have trouble trying anything else because these two dishes are so good, but The Rustler was fabulous & I'll definitely get it again.
Our waitress (Becky) was also really attentive & sweet, which is of course always much appreciated.

I absolutely love Pizza Luce! I went to college in Duluth, where I fell in love with their pizza… Read more »
Mashed potato pizza and chocolate cake. Im in heaven!!
This is the BEST pizza place in the world, and Ive been to NY and Chicago.
They are open late, got crazy pizzas and lots of veggie options for all of your grass eaters. And the veggie pizzas are pretty darn good. Cheese bread is pretty amazign too.
The service is a hit or miss, and the bathrooms are ....yacky.
This place really grows on me each time I come back. I love that you can buy a single slice and eat quickly on one side of the restaurant, and on the other, it's like a full dining experience. They have great vegetarian and vegan options which is awesome. They also have a lot of non-pizza options too. I recently had a veggie sandwich that was fantastic! I've also ordered a whole pizza and had it delivered and that was really really tasty. I will definitely be back here soon.
I don't need to say it, everyone knows this place is the best pizza place in the twin cities.
But if you can't decide on which location to go to, you have to go to the downtown location, not only was it the first, but its by far the best, and portrays the Luce image the most!
Keep up the good work and bring back the Tortellini Diablo!!!
I always go to Pizza Luce in DT Mpls for lunch or a Happy Hour date, and have never had anything I don't like on the menu.
Great selection of beers - especially good local ones like Summit.
Went on Tuesday night last week at about 9pm - it was pretty busy, but still had our food promptly, although it took a few minutes for our server to come greet us for drinks, although he was very apologetic, and treated us really well after that. We got the veg pizza with feta, olives, and it was all sorts of yummy-ness.
Try
*garlic cheese bread
*any of the pizzas
*veg and vegan muffalettas - yum!!
*Seasonal Summit beers
I love Pizza Luce in general. They're open late, the service is friendly, there's plenty of space, and they have a ton of quality, thoughtful vegan options. Make sure to try their garlic cheese bread with their own proprietary "rinotta" vegan cheese---it'll blow your mind.
This particular downtown branch now offers brunch options from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. I tried their vegan biscuits and gravy ($8.49) which comes with a side of tofu scramble. I liked the tofu scramble quite a bit---it was fresh, light and colorful, with an array of bell peppers and tasty broccoli. The seasoning was also good, though it could have been spicier. This is probably the best tofu scramble in the Twin Cities, in my opinion, easily beating the scrambles at Hard Times, Seward Cafe, Triple Rock and French Meadow.
The biscuits and gravy was okay, but not great; the biscuits were too doughy and small (I prefer crispy/flaky biscuits) and they floated in a huge sea of gravy; the gravy was way too sweet and should have been savory. I think it could have used some fresher touches, like chopped green onion and tomatoes in the mix.
The portabella florentine is also okay, though I wasn't a fan of the overly-salty red sauce that came with it. This dish is highly unusual, though, and not the sort of thing you'd see elsewhere, so I appreciate Pizza Luce for flexing their culinary chops.
I love the vegan breakfast burrito. I normally don't like burritos of any kind, but this one is loaded with seitan, fake sausage, rice, peppers and more. It's super flavorful and covered in a nice pico de gallo and herbs and comes with hash browns. It's also quite filling.
As it stands, the brunch menu at this location is an intriguing addition to Pizza Luce's already-great vegan choices.
Pizza Luce is one of the coolest pizza places in the country. This place has great vibes, cool design and a awesome atmosphere. This is on a lot of the lists for the best pizza in the country and you can see why when you look at the menu. They have a lot of creative pizza's. And they are all really good.
Last time I went I had the Classic. It saved my soul.
I have been to the St. Paul location a few times and always enjoyed the food. A friend planned a bachelorette party and made this our first stop before heading out for the night. They were so accommodating and flexible with a big group. Our waitress totally rocked and had a great time with us. Of course the pizza was delicious as always. I highly recommend Pizza Luce.
Really fast late night delivery. Only 4 stars because i don't really remember what it tasted like, honestly, I'm pretty sure it was tasty but I was drunk
Great pizza - love the Rustler, the Mexican-style, and the good old Pepperoni. Breakfast options are also good: Pesto Benedict (although eggs were not runny...cardinal sin of Eggs Benny), breakfast burrito and yummy cheesy hash browns.
Downsides: Paying a "cover" to get pizza after bar time, and apparently you get patted down before you go in. Now that Centerfield (or Fatso's or the Dugout, depending on the time of day) is open next door with a nearly line-free pizza window, I'll probably go there, because I'm hardly a discerning consumer at 2am.
Literally: the best pizza I can remember having, with absolutely amazing vegan options. The waitress was very nice and helpful (suggesting half and half so that I could try *both* soy-based cheeses).
The friend I went with and I both agreed that when we got our small pizzas we thought we wouldn't finish them, but when we realized our plates were empty we were wishing for more!
I loved the decor, though I was an out-of-town visitor and don't know what it was like before. It was a casual place, though it felt like it could seem upscale, too.
I'm wondering what excuse I can come up with to go to Minneapolis again to have another pizza or two. :)
For the price, I was never truly impressed with Pizza Luce.
Punch has the thin crust down to a T.
Mesa pizza is open late, by the slice, interesting toppings, and affordable.
Pizza Luce is the poster boy pizza place of the Twin Cities and may have been great at one point, but has used its reputation to carry it farther than it potentially deserves. Granted, I've only eaten here a few times, but was never stunned.
Still better than the average chain.
We got Pizza Luce delivered two of the three nights over a long weekend in Mpls. *Perfect* for a late night eat. They delivered right to the hotel room, even though we were on the club floor (which requires key access to get in).
The crust is really good - slightly crunchy, yet chewy. The sauce is sweet. It definitely hit the spot, although now that I'm looking at the reviews, am slightly disappointed that we let the boys order. The menu has loads of specialty pizzas, yet all we got was pepperoni!
This is my favorite pizza place in Minneapolis and I have never even been to it. I get it delivered every time I roll into town. Delivery has always been prompt and within the window they gave me.
The menu offerings are creative and I have yet to have something I did not enjoy. The price seems fair for the quality of the ingredients. My favorite is probably an order of the focaccia and a "Luce".
It takes a lot for a Chicagoan to admit they like a pizza that isn't made in a deep dish and doesn't requires a knife and fork for you to eat it.
The only thing holding me back from giving this place 5 stars is the phone staff. They aren't very friendly, and seem annoyed that they have to answer the phones. That being said, I have yet to have an order screwed up so I will deal with a slight attitude problem.
I really need to get into the physical location one of these days.
Pizza Lucé: a mainstay in my Monday-Friday in downtown Minneapolis. While the place is great for a quick lunch bite on the run, Pizza Lucé really shines when you have the chance to kick back with some friends, enjoy some beers and experience "the Bear" pizza (if meats your thing.)
If pizza isn't really your forté. there is a fair amount of non-veggie and vegetarian dishes alike. Also very amazing.
The best late night place to grab a bite in the city. Long lines at bar close so leave before last call and scoot on over to avoid the lines and get your fave slice, a small caesar, and a rootbeer to share with friends and soak up some of that "fun" you enjoyed earlier in the night.
So I used to get cravings for this place when I lived in the pizza mecca of Chicago. Need I say more?
You don't really go to Luce for the pizza, although it is better than average. It's a great spot to eat after you have been downtown drinking and need good greasy food. I believe that it is open until 3 a.m. on weekends. The people watching is second only to the downtown diner. There is a good chance that you will see a fight, or at least a shouting match between 21 year old suburbanites who are just "keeping it real". Also, their brownies and rice crispy bars are awesome.
yum, pizza luce! i love their inventive pizzas, including a couple featuring mashed potatoes. also, even though i'm an omnivore, i like that they have veggie-friendly options here. we ordered a sampler appetizer featuring 4 different sauces/dips (including artichoke and bruschetta) that came with foccacia bread, and it was quickly gobbled up. their chicken wings are pretty good too...i think our fave was the BBQ. i'd definitely go back if i visit minneapolis again. :)
Well, let me start by saying that I've only been to the one in downtown, and the one in Duluth. The pizza is amazing when you're drunk, I can say that for sure! It's pretty good when you are not as well! I have to say though, I really like the one in Duluth! It's really large, they have live music, and the atmosphere is pretty cool. Word of warning: cops outside the one in downtown are not amused when you throw pizza crust in the middle of the street as you sit drunkenly on the curb slobbering on pizza in a desperate attempt in at least being able to see straight again.
Mediocre Mid-west pizza and rude service to boot. This is what happened on a nice cold Sunday evening:
1. I call and get put on hold for 10 minutes... then someone comes on the line and asks me "can you hold please?... I thought I was talking to Northwest Airlines for second.
2. I walk in and try to ask for my to-go order; some disoriented lady is looking at salads, while the ONE employee they had at the cash register is staring at her and ignoring me.
3. This pierced goth looking numb-skull finally decides to ask me about my order; I tell her it's a carry out, she rings me up and forgets to enter the coupon I give her. Then of course she acts pissed off because she had to void the transaction to apply the coupon.... oh the perils of working a cash register...
4. Finally I get 5 cans of Coke and no bag for them whatsoever; I about had it with that brain dead bitch, and just walked out.
5. The pizza... average crust; it doesn't even come close to Round Table quality, and that doesn't say much. The sauce: Way overloaded with spices.... and by spices I mean mainly SALT. I know Pizza Hut was the gold standard for whover opened this place up but... it would help if they openup an Italian cookbook and read it for once. The toppings were... well toppings... nothing special.
Believe it or not, this Luce joint has a pretty good reputation in Minneapolis, which doesn't say a lot about local food tastes. I'd hate to try some of the "bad" pizza places around here.
I'm going to be honest, and you know it's true. Whenever I walk in here, I always feel that I don't have enough piercings or tattoos on my body .With that being said, the pizza here is great. Unfortunately, I've been here a handful of times and every time I've had sub-par service. I'm not sure why waiters/waitresses think it's OK to act snotty and crabby because it definitely won't increase your tip. I'm just sayin.
I've been to the Pizza Luce on Franklin and I think the service is a bit better. Maybe it's just the downtown pretentiousness.
Great vegetarian & vegan-friendly (and non-veg, I'm sure, for that matter) pizza/sub joint here in the Twin Cities.
I don't think I've ever had anything that I don't truly enjoy at this place. I don't know what they put in their food, but sometimes you crave it late at night, and that's okay! Because they deliver until something like 2am!
They're a tad bit pricey, but it's okay to indulge sometimes. Their pizzas are excellent, and their hoagies, well, they rock too.
I would probably give their pizza 4 fours, but the downtown PL has a secret weapon.
Brunch. People, I know lots of places do brunch, but Luce does these pesto eggs benedict that are the best I've ever had. Sausage, pesto hollandaise, drool. They also have brie-stuffed french toast. It's all amazing. Plus a bloody mary bar. You can stuff as many carrots, cheese sticks, olives, pickles, etc as will fit in your pint of bloody mary. While you watch the football game. Really, truly.
Duluth first invented this ridiculously good brunch I think, but now it's here!
I also really like the baked potato pizza. I can't help it. I know it's wrong.
it would seem that my preferences in pizza have changed over the years, where i once held the venerable pizza luce pizza in the highest esteem i have been forced to acquiesce to my preference for punch the past couple of years. sorry guys, but it's the thin crust.
that confession aside. the luce has been the source for vodka induced hiaku on my part, innumerable black-and-tan infuse late nights and a short lived fascination with tattooed women.
the downtown location was my local pizzeria for a while there and their ability to navigate downtown office buildings for delivery made them the fuel for late night work benders.
while my tastes have changed a bit, this place still delivers.
and yes, it's fine for kids unless you're raising them in that sheltered puritanical kind of way where you think everyone should look the same. but then again, that just might be me.
