I'm giving this pizza joint 4.5 stars... by far the best pizza in Fidi.

I love their pizza sauce because its nice and tart and always graciously placed on top of the pizza. The crust is also crunchy on the outside and a bit chewy... perfect balance.

Yesterday, we ordered a standard grandma personal pizza but i was in the mood for a pasta as well. We ended up ordering the pasta with meat sauce and boy oh boy, they are not shady with the meat sauce. The pasta was cooked to perfect al dente so i was very pleased.

This is my go to place for delivery when it comes to pizza and now pasta too!

A good lunch in FiDi?!  It's a miiiirrraaacle!!

Old style, run down looking NY style pizza place here with your real, gruff New Yorker guys working- without gloves on while they are handling your pizza and handling money at the cash register.  I noticed a lot here during my 20 minute wait.
Of course I ate the pizza anyway..It all just looked too good.  Although I haven't tried the Sicilian style yet - here's what I think is best (and worst- amazing how such a good pizza place could also serve a slice that is soo bad).

Vodka sauce slice - Skip!  This was awful - from the taste of the sauce to the crust.

Buffalo chicken slice-  $$$$, a lot of chicken though. Very hot/spicy.  This was 3 star.  The guys in the office really liked it.  Personally I wouldn't get it again.

Regular style with mushrooms - this pie was 20++ bucks but huge.  Piled high with mushrooms, excellent sauce, not too greasy - huge slices with a not too crispy and not too thin crust.  Perfect amount of sauce and cheese and perfectly cooked.  This is heavy type pizza so you don't need many slices.  Still it was soo good, I had three - which seemed the size of about 6 normal slices.

Finally - real old NY style slices! Thanks to Yelp I found this.  For a mushroom pie - would definitely return!

Best pizza by the slice downtown (FiDi).  Do yourself a favor and splurge on either the Grandma (round) or Buffalo Chicken...they are both well worth the extra buck or two.

Their whole pies are also solid (even though everyone knows the best pizza from these places is by the slice).  Delivery can be slow, so I'd recommend dropping in to pick it up.  I've had pies made in as little as 15 minutes.

Don't expect much from the dining area...unless you consider McD's "going out to eat".

Grandma slices are the best.  The chicken slice was also really good.

I've tried the ceesar salad ... not the best, but acceptable.  Chicken parm sub ... okay ... meatball sub ... okay.

Really the pizza is what I liked the most.

Overall, I'll be back for the pizza.

I used to LOVE this pizza...Tonight changed that. Ordered slices. Pizza came stuck to the box lid entirely (I'll post the pic) - couldn't even scrape it off. Ice cold (if that matters at this point).  I call, I'm calm - I tell the guy - he puts me on hold..I tell him AGAIN...he asks me "what pizza" instead of "which slice" which took more aggravation to decipher...ending in a screaming match.  Never, ever, again.  I guess I'm going out to buy pizza now at the lovely Inatesso next door which doesn't do slices - but whateva

Best by-the-slice pizza I've had in NYC.

Grandma slices are, well, the best I've had in NYC. They have a specialty chicken slice...chicken fa...fo...I don't remember. I could never pronounce it right anyway - the lady behind the counter always teased me (good naturedly). Anyway, it was amazing.

I tried a sandwich of some parmigiana variety once, it was decent. The pizza really is great though...sauce, crust, toppings, cheese...all excellent. Who would have thought you'd find this little slice of heaven in FiDi?

I used to come here for lunch when I worked down there, and was devestated to find - once I moved down there - that they close fairly early in the evenings and aren't open on weekends. NOOOoooooo......

Ever since I started working in the city, people have been raving about the pizza here. The first time I tried the pepperoni pizza and it was kind of sweet. Not a fan of that! I also had a chicken/spinach pizza and that was better. Today, I had the margarita pizza and it was really good! I will agree with what everyone has been saying - Pizza Italia has the best pizza in this area.
They have a small dining area with about 6 or 7 tables. Its winter so it gets kind of cold sitting in there.
They do take credit cards. They deliver. and They have an ATM machine inside.
oh! I keep hearing about this GRANDMAS PIZZA or something like that. what is that?! I will definitely try it one of these days!

My family & I were visiting from California. My boyfriend was convinced that a New York trip wouldn't be complete without an authentic New York pizza; not the sit-down kind of place, but the hole-in-the-wall kind of joint. We Yelped it & found Pizza Italia. What a gem!

We ended up ordering two whole pizzas. Our topping choices were pretty diverse: half pepperoni, half sausage & a whole pizza with bacon, spinach, mushrooms, & ham. An odd combination of toppings that ended up tasting pretty spectacular. Considering having to put the pizza craftsman through all of those requests, he was very polite & didn't mind them at all. My boyfriend ended up tipping him later though.

The car ride home went like this:
"Oh. Wow. I have never tried pizza like this before."
"I burnt my tongue on that first bite, but I don't care. It was worth it."
"I love the dough. So soft. Fresh toppings."
    "Good choice! Good choice!"
"It's like I'm in heaven. Pizza heaven-- a different kind of heaven. Mm..."
"This is the type of pizza you know would taste good even if it's cold."
"I don't like cold pizza, but this is soooo good."
    "Drool."

I liked the size of my riccotta and tomato slice and it was certainly flavorful with the garlic that was pile on it.  I'd like the crust more if it was thinner and $4.05 for this kind of slice just seemed excessive although I get it may be the norm for the FiDi.

A small place with a few tables, Pizza Italia looks like another (pardon me) hole in the wall pizza joint, but OH MY GAWD!!! This pizza is AMAZING!!!

They have your typical NY pizza, but the particular pizza I'm talking about is "Grandma's"--it's almost like eating a thin, airy slice of garlic bread with blobs of mozzerella and sauce.

In the past, my company ordered some slices with different toppings and everyone, no matter what they had, loved it!  And just yesterday, I went by and waited 4 minutes for the fresh pie that was in the oven.  WORTH THE WAIT!!!  And other patrons were jealous...I'm not kidding!

I will say that you'll be VERY thirsty from it!

This is the only pizza I'll be eating in this area from now on!

In SF, we have Blondie's. In NY, they have pizza. Everywhere. So it was hard to choose who had the BEST pizza, because I'm sure they were all great. So, in order to get the "NY experience" as some would call it, I chose this "hole-in-the-wall" joint quietly tucked away in an empty alleyway. Let me tell you, I felt like a mouse who just so happened to choose the right hole with the right cheese and no traps! The place is small, but clean enough to eat in and feel safe. They have a bunch of options to choose from. We had a large Pizza Italia Special for a little over $20 and it was LOADED with more than 10 different toppings! Next time I'll try the "Grandma", since everyone seems to be yelping about that one. If you're in or around Battery Park, this would be a good pit-stop.

    Only one downfall: dirty restroom.

A pretty large pizza place. Not an impressive place to take someone (looks wise), but when looking for a great GRANDMA's SLICE and only care about the quality of the food...then please go to this fine establishment.

The pizza itself was pretty decently sized and priced and it was one of the best Grandma slices I've tasted.

Located near (not in) the historic Stone St, it's a great place to check out before hitting up the great bars on Stone St.

This place is very very close to my work so I come here when I get a slice.

Minus one star for the woman who takes payment/orders barks at lightning speed. If you aren't ready she'll easily make you feel uncomfortable as it is quite obvious you are wasting your time.

However, the pizza is good, and be sure to order your pizza "hot."

$10 minimum on credit card orders, and plenty of seating. Great for the financial district.

I learned about this place on Yelp while searching for a good lunch place to hit while hanging around in the financial district.  Not local New Yorkers, my BF and I had some serious trouble trying to find this little hole in the wall.  We had to get some help from a meter maid to navigate through this area's crazy streets.  Once we arrived, the place didn't look too promising -- just a little deli-looking place with racks of pizza.

But the pizza, oh the pizza... why did I ever doubt you, Yelpers?  The pizza was amazing.  Perfect thin crust, just the right amount of cheese, bubbling sauce... my slice of buffalo chicken had ranch dressing down one half the slice and bbq sauce down the other half, which made for a perfect bite when folding the slice in 2.  I wish I worked in the area so I could eat there every day.  It's just that good.

Not the most attractive place, but damn good grandma's pizza.  Thick crust, chunky sauce, cheese base, lots of taste.  A slice of grandma will cost you $2.55 and take 5-10 min (*does that sound dirty to anyone else?), and it's well worth it.

$10 or so credit card min.

The only place that I thought was better than this place was Roma's. And they closed down. I think I've tried everything on the menu. This is due to the fact that I work near the place. They do  a good job with all their pizzas. The recommended is "grandma's".

The other items on the menu are daily pasta specials and sandwiches. For the pasta my favorite is penne with chicken and broccoli. For the sandwiches.... its a little different try the potato and egg.

Things that you can pass on... rice balls and meatball subs.

Good food and good value... lunch will run you 3.00-12.00 depending on your appetite.

Most pizza places in Manhattan aren't very good so I'm always glad to find a decent place in the FiDi.   It's very good traditional pizza.   If you're the type who likes their pizza with flavor and a little greasy than it's worth your time.  They also offer the other traditional pasta/subs of a pizzaria but I personally haven't tried any or even saw anyone else order.

Prices are good.  Also, there is a Grandma Pizza that is their specialty which I like.  I'm not really sure what ingredients they throw in the Grandma but it's a lot sweeter than a regular.

Okay, I'm upset with either Yelp, or Pizza Italia here.  I tried the famed Grandma Slice here...and it was terrible!!  The pizza was hard, cold and icky.  Maybe this pizza tastes better if they actually served it to you hot.  If that is the case, why is this place serving you pizza that is cold/??

    Ugh.

Now THAT's an NYC-style slice. Pizza Italia serves pizza with a crispy thin crust, a flavorful, neat sauce, and some mozzarella. Simple. Well done.

They're a bit heavy-handed with oregano in their pizza sauce, but other than that it's an excellent regular pie. I am a frequent customer - the place rocks.

So...about their grandma slice: they're a little off with this. I'm skeptical of the non-square shape, and the globs of sauce overpower the garlic and grated cheese. Also, fresh basil should really be a featured ingredient in grandma slices, but Pizza Italia's slice had some pretty lackluster, dried stuff instead. It's a tasty slice nonetheless, but it's not a must-have. Their other variations are just as good: vodka sauce slice, fresh tomato slice, chicken, etc.

If I were you, I'd recite your order in your head a few times before you enter this pizzeria.  The little spitfire behind the counter has no time for your stuttering or silent befuddlement.

When she barks, "NEXT!"  You'd better be ready.  If you're not, just point to a couple of slices in the glass case and step aside.

That's what I did and ended up with a broccoli slice and a chicken and tomato.  My BF was a regular and was actually greeted with a "Hey, where've you been?" in the tone of a mom scolding her habitually late son.  He ordered a pepperoni and a vodka slice which he proclaims is "the best vodka sauce ever."

We get our slices and immediately I am full from looking at them, the toppings are generous and the broccoli is not the minced green flecks you find at other places.  These are hearty whole florets.  I fold my first slice and the crust cracks under the pressure.  It is a good sign.

I take a bite and my mouth is filled with tender broccoli, hints of garlic, cheesy goodness and crispy NY style crust.  Very good for a simple concept such as broccoli on pizza.

    I am pleased.

I try the chicken and tomato, a favorite combo of mine.  It is also hot and delicious.  Not overly salty, the crust not too thin or too thick, not under sauced or oversauced, just...gooood.

Definitely one of the better pizza spots in the area, I'll be back again.

Also, if you are planning to place an order for lunch, do it EARLY!  The whole time BF and I were waiting for our slices (a smidge after noon), the phone was ringing non-stop and the lady would pick up and shout "No more orders!" before hanging up.

I went there and got me some of their Grandma slices, which I never heard of, and boy was my palate a happy camper..It was like an Italian party in my mouth( and no, not like that time with those two guidos in Brighton Beach...LOL)

The pizza slices were huge, the sauce was nice and fresh, and not too tangy...It was sweet......Just delightful!!!

    Yeah, I'm coming back.....

One star off, because you need a $10 minimum to charge your food...I don't like that!!!

Always on the search for a new place to eat our hurried lunch downtown, a colleague and I went to try Pizza Italia for the first time a few months ago.  The long line of regulars looked promising so we joined the hungry crowd of black coats waiting impatiently for slices like humanitarian aid doled out by the counter queen.  A lot of "Honey!"s, "Sweetie!"s and vaguely sincere smiles later she'd handed us a couple of slices of Grandma's which we took back with us to the office.

Our co-workers' hungry looks should be testament enough to the sweet aroma of this pizza.  On top of that the sauce is sweet and full of flavor,  the crust is crispy and the whole thing is just very tasty.

Try a slice of Grandma's (you will have to wait 5 or 10 minutes during the lunch hour as it's a favorite).  If the promise of a sweet sauce does not appeal to your tastes, try the Fresh Tomato slice.  Four stars is a good rating for a pizza place in New York...five stars is godly.

Pizza options in the financial district are pretty limited. I wouldn't say that Pizza Italia is the best I've had, but I'm willing to take the ten-minute walk for a couple of grandma slices. I don't care for their other pizzas; they're just okay. But the grandma really packs a punch with its flavorful sauce.

The owner (I'm assuming, because she acts like she owns the place) has a classic no-nonsense New York attitude. I like it, but I've seen others visibly bothered by her straightforward approach. Try not to take it personally.

I had a terrible delivery experience with Pizza Italia and as a result, my pizza arrived cold 1.5 hrs after I ordered. Since I was at work, I had to reheat my Grandma slice in the microwave but it was still very good - tasty crust, lots of flavorful sauce though a bit too salty. I would recommend this place for a tasty slice but NOT for delivery!!!

I've been in NY for some time now but I still find it difficult to justify more than $2 for a slice of pizza.  But then again, my days of eating pizza is from small-town Massachusetts.  But anyhow, the pizza here is good, as much as I grumble about the price.  Try anything and it tastes delicious.  The dough is great, the toppings even better, and all together, the perfect bites.

This is the only place that I get pizza from. I first heard about it from people who referred to it as "Stone St. Pizza" but I kept walking up and down the street and couldn't find it. I decided this must be the place that they are talking about since there was a huge line. Like everyone else, I ordered a slice of Grandma's and I've never looked at pizza the same way again. The combination of spices combined with the thin crust is spot on! You can't go wrong here for an inexpensive lunch!

i come here maybe once or twice a week and love their pizza which is just a good and classic ny slice. crunchy, not soggy, and sauce is good. my favorite is always the grandma slice and if you are lucky, you get it piping hot straight from the oven. most of the slices always look fresh (there are the few occasional stragglers with less popular toppings) as this place is usually packed at lunch time so there is a constant flow of fresh pizzas coming out of the oven.

my only complaint is sometimes i feel like cattle being yelled at by the owners/staff. but i guess you have to be a bit rude sometimes when you are dealing with a hungry mob of ppl in a cramped space.. and believe me this place can get packed during the lunch crowd.

overall best pizza imho in the neighborhood.

"I'm a gonna make you a pizza you can't refuse"..You know when the Godfather is telling you to eat a slice you gotta do it.  This is by far the BEST place to get a slice of pizza below Canal and the cheapest...Try their plain (only $2) or grandma's...If you don't know what a grandma's is you're in for a treat!! They also have great pasta specials, its a little bit pricey for pasta in the area but so good, my favorite is Tortellini Alla Nonna, how can you say no to creamy pasta, prosciutto, and tomatoes...I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.
