Gruppo is the shiz. If you read my other review on Famous Pizza, I LOVE personal-ish pies. This is another one of my favorite pizza joints. The place is really cool inside - it has dimmed lights, it's cozy with a bar, and it's welcoming without screaming "PIZZA IN HERE".
I love the toppings you can choose from. I sometimes go for ricotta and shitaki mushrooms. I keep it simple but I love that there are tons of options.
I kind of hate that it's on Avenue B, which is kind of out of the way for me. Of course I will keep coming back though.
I love this place: the vibe, the music, the super nice waiter/bartender who sort of happened to look like a combo of Gerard Butler and Ewan McGregor . . . I mean . . . what?
Oh and the food. The food! If you like your pizza thin and crispy, you need to get here. Everything was fresh, quality, and not one soggy bite. Perfection. Love the rotella appetizer, which is nothing fancy but is really delicious.
Feeling gluttonous, we also got a slice of pear cake, which I think is one of their seasonal desserts. It was a nice ending that sort of ended up summing up Gruppo: warm, comforting, and delicious.
Next time I think I'll try to make it in for their happy hour special, which is a large pizza, salad, and a bottle of wine for $20. TWENTY, bitches. That's what's up.
I found a winner. This is my favorite mid-priced pizza in NYC. It makes me crave pizza for dinner almost every night since the first. Their buttery dough and thin crust create the perfect bottom layer topped with a tangier sauce and fresh cheese. I love the classica, the shroom town and the meat lovers, however you can create your own. Their Greek salad and rotella are delicious as well.
I would stay away from the wine, it's not very good. Gruppo is the best for take out, and a picnic in tompkins square park.
Pesto pie with a little extra mozzarella. Heaven.
If you combine price and quality, this place is hands-down the best pizza that we've had in Manhattan. We come here for lunch where we can get 2 beautiful slices of perfect cheese pizza for just $4 or 2 slices plus a beer for only $5. They also frequently have 2 for 1 drinks specials.
The atmosphere is boring but not bad and the service is great. One word of caution though - try to avoid getting toppings (at least veggies) - we ordered broccoli once and it was like, a piece of broccoli out of a can placed on top of the pizza after it was out of the oven.
This is my favorite pizza in the city. It's Italian-style thin crust that is so delicious you will want to wrap yourself in it on a chilly fall evening. You will leave this place with a pizza glow that makes men fall to their knees and women faint.
Am I talking it up too much?
Seriously, this is damn good pizza. The salads are fresh and light, the appetizers simple and thoughtful, the atmosphere casual, and the prices more reasonable than the comparably delicious pizza at Luzzo's (http://www.yelp.com/bi...).
Get delivery or head to the restaurant, but the seating is limited so it's best for 2-4. Grab a date and go. You won't impress her/him with the ambiance but you'll both be immediately at ease. It's the kind of cute little Italian pizzeria where you expect the owner to be working the kitchen.
I finally tried this place.. thanks to a raining sunday in NYC where there was nothing to do but football & pizza + wings. I ordered 3 slices of sausage and pepperoni. it was delicious ( lunch special good deal)
I can't believe I live so close and never try this soon. I'm a BIG FAN!!
Just when I had one foot in the door of my new Brooklyn apartment my boss tells me he's going to pass his sick rent-controlled LES compound down to me, "I'd really love it to keep in the family..."
Awwwwwwww! Best boss ever, I took him up on it immediately.
Mmmm, the Lower East Side, home of Gruppo--- when I was a carefree single girl I went on a date with another intense journalist here. He never seemed to stop talking except for the times that Gruppo's buttery thin crust pizza was in his mouth. He actually even closed his eyes for a moment to savor the sweet, stewed marinara of our Margherita Classica. The tang of the sauce really complimented the flaky, club cracker-like crust. It's the kind of bread that gets sweeter the second it hits your saliva.
We got a nasty bottle of Montepulciano for 20 bucks, which got us tipsy enough to not talk about work--- so well worth it. Don't get it though if you want to live the next day, that wine was not right.
I'm usually a sit at the bar kind of person but Gruppo's bar is itty bitty and crammed--- the red retro diner stools weren't too comfortable. I'd get a table instead next time.
Overall, a cheap and pleasant experience. I'd say it's a good date place, even though I didn't end up like-liking my date I still give him hella props for taking me to a solid place.
When they say thin crust here, they really meant thin crust!
The crust was almost as thin as paper and had the amazing strength to hold up it's toppings! INCREDIBLE!
The Classica was AMAZING and the Bruschetta was delicious!
I can't really say anything bad about this place. The service was friendly and there was no BS with the food.
I hear from my roommate their lunch special is a pretty awesome deal! Check it out ppl!
I can't believe it took me a year of living nearby to actually try this place!...It was just a little too close I think.
A friend and I ordered a pizza to be delivered from Gruppo a few weeks ago. The man we spoke to said it would take 30 minutes for it to come, but it was probably at our door in 20. Unfortunately, we had taken the dog out for a walk and lost the key to get back into the building. By the time we got back in we had a pissed-off voicemail from the restaurant asking why we didn't answer the door, which is totally legitimate. They graciously sent the deliveryman back and we gave him a good tip. (If you're reading this Gruppo, we're sorry! We really did get locked out!)
But I digress. We ordered a plain pie half topped with carmelized onions. The cheese was phenomenal and the crust was perfectly thin and crispy. For $16 it was a great deal. I hope to go to Gruppo and eat there, and to try some of the other options. For now it's definitely on the top of my list for pizza delivery in the East Village.
I'm giving this 5 stars for one reason -- CARAMELIZED ONIONS on my pizza. It was the best tasting thing I've ever had on pizza. Why other places don't frequently offer this is beyond me. I dream about it.
This place has excellent thin crust pizza. The crust is so thin, I alone could seriously eat a whole large pie in one sitting (and I'm usually good with two slices)
that being said, order a fair amount, you'll each eat a minimum of 4 slices. The topping choices are great as well, and they have some awesome combinations. Bring your vegetarian friends for sure too. I am still trying to get down there before 7pm to snag their pitcher and a pie deal for 18 bucks! Has anyone had a chance to try that?
skip the wine for sure, and stick to the beer.
delivery in 20min, hot and delicious.... I stand corrected

When it comes to thin crust pizza and delivery I tend to have mixed feelings. Too often you end up… Read more »
Circumstance of my experience: I go Gruppo any time I want go gourmet in my flip flops.
The food: best thin crust in NYC. Great variety of fresh toppings. Salads are a good way to keep busy until your pizza is made.
Spice quotient: if jalepenos as a topping don't do it, the standard red pepper flakes will
The place & how they do it: small, sorta cramped hole in the wall. That said, I find it homey and have only waited 15 minutes at most for a table. Service is quick and attentive (hard not to be given the dimenstions of the spot)
The price: not bad considering how much awesomer this pizza is to any pie a standard NYC pizzeria has to offer
Similar places that I like: Vezzo
AMAZING! if you like thin, you'll like Gruppo! cracker thin but never gets soggy (unlike like Lil Frankies). Extremely fresh ingredients, we tried classic margharita, pineapple, and all meat, everything was spot on. If you have room for apps, the caesar is perfectly dressed with cracker thin croutons too.
AND one of the best happy hour deals ever: Large Classic Pizza + pitcher of beer for $18. (5-7pm every day). Their other sister restaurants Vezzo and Posto does not offer this.
great service, great food, great chill atmosphere with hip music. house wines are delicious as well!
Small place. If you have to bring kids, bring one or two... not four! *ahem*
Had to order The Big Pineapple because damn, do I love me some pineapple on my pizza. Pizza crust was even thinner than I thought but not as crunchy (crispy along the edges, not so much on the interior). It was yummy but good thing I was still full from a big lunch because the personal pizza would be a mere appetizer to me (yes, I am a fatass).
The service was flawless. My water glass was filled before my food even came out . The pizza only took about 10 minutes before it hit my table. Server was impressively polite and attentive.
Passover's coming up. Oh, how I wish the mandatory "unleavened bread" could be Gruppo's cracker-thin crusts!
Was here on March 6 and got a couple of slices ($2 each) plus a 9" Margherita Clasica ($10) which was just perfect. Drank a bottle of the Montepulciano ($20) which I would not recommend. But that's my fault. Given a standard markup, what is the shelf price of a $20 bottle? I'm guessing its negative (the vineyard pays you to take it off their hands), judging by the flavor. Oh well.
So, two slices, one small personal pizza and a bottle of wine = $37 w/o tip. Not shabby.
The pizza was extremely thin, thinner then dominoe's thin crust pizza which is like Matzah with sauce and cheese. The ingredients and the cheese on this particular pizza was very fresh. What makes this place great is the value. For $20 we got a large pie and a bottle of house red. Next time i'm in the neighborhood i'm stopping by this place.
I do not purport to be a Pizza Expert of any kind. I just know that I
want to put Gruppo's pizza in my mouth more than I want to put other
things in my mouth. On an unrelated note, the Meatzza was my
favorite, followed by the Greek and then the Big Pineapple. I cannot
vouch for the Shroomfest + anchovies due to a conflict of interests.
The prices were very reasonable relative to the level of mouthgasm I
experienced, and the service was above and beyond what I'd normally
expect from a pizza joint.
Thanks to Peter D. for dragging us through the slush to this crispy
slice of heaven, and thanks to Gruppo's for staying open a little
later so we could feed the bourbon in our bellies.
You know what I love? Rationalizing things. Things like having a 2nd dinner. And you know what's really helpful for rationalizing having a second dinner? A two-hour whiskey tasting.
Even though I'd gorged myself on a bacon Royale w/ Cheese earlier that night, the whiskey created this very rational thought in my head: it's been at least 4 hrs since you had that burger, and you are a little drunk! You NEED to eat something--something like delicious pizza.
Well! Who am I to argue with reason?
It was late and Gruppo was close to closing, but they were no match for peter d's magical charms. They agreed to throw a couple of pies in the oven for us, and were even obliging when we wanted to go halfsies on both. And can I just say, thank god for the wisdom of whiskey! These pizzas were excellent, and that is not a term I throw around loosely (for pizza). The Meat Lovers' was covered in all kinds of delicious meaty-ness, and even though J had managed to convince the boys to add anchovies to the Shroomtown, the smell of truffle oil was too much for me to resist. I stealthily pulled the slimy, salty piece of fish off the top of my slice, and reveled in shroomy heaven. Easily the best mushroom slice I've ever had.
I'd say this has to be one of the top three pizzas I've had in New York--definitely approaching Franny's in terms of general excellence, and significantly cheaper than Franny's, too. It just goes to show you, it is always a good idea to listen to your whiskey.
So I walked by Pizza Gruppo today, and spotted they have a lunch special: 2 slices and 1 can of soda for $4. "Dayum!" I thought, "that's better than Papaya Dog which I just walked by at the 14th St/1st Ave station."
And I was right. Pizza Gruppo served up 2 nice thin crust slices fresh from the oven, and quite big might I add. The crust was the best part (it tasted almost like a quesadilla when folded), with the cheese and sauce a bit lacking (in my opinion at least). And even though it was thin crust, I found the slices to be a bit oily.
Although I didn't find the pizza quite remarkable, the lunch special runs from 11:30 to 5 so even you Manhattanites should be able to take advantage of a good deal.
omg, this place is like a little piece of heaven. Do you like pizza? Skip all the SOHO tourist pizza spots. This is the real deal.
First I like it cause it's cozy. Perfect date spot. Also they have delicious wine, and serve it in an unconventional 8oz glass, which I like. Makes it special somehow.
And then I get to the pizza. The Margarita is great, but there are lots of other ones to choose from. And this is thin crust pizza, so it's not heavy on cheese. They use fresh mozzarella, and what can I say, they make a superb pie. The salads are also excellent too.
It's a tad pricey for pizza, but worth every penny. Service is great and friendly, and you know it's AveB, so its just a cool neighborhood for dinner.
yum!
(also check out Posto on 2nd Ave + 18th street, a sister location...)
God, this pizza is so good.
I've gotten delivery many times, but, like everything else, it's SO MUCH BETTER at the restaurant, right out of the oven. The Big Pineapple, the Chixpotle, the Meat Lover's, the Fafandone...all winners. The non-pizza items are also high quality; I particularly like the spinach salad.
The restaurant is small and cozy. It's all dark wood and exposed brick, dim lights and a comfortable feel. The two-person tables are tiny; barely enough room for you, your date and your pizza, but it's intimate. The service is stellar.
You know what? I'll say it. This is one of my favorite spots for pizza in NYC. The thin crust is perfect, the toppings fresh and delicious, and since there isn't an overabundance of hype, I don't have to wait for my pie.
Merry Christmas.
BEST THIN CRUST PIZZA IN NYC! All I hear about is how good the Shroomtown pizza is here. You know what? I don't care. I need my meat. I've been meaning to come here for at least a year, based on many stellar reviews by reliable friends. I finally made it here and was not disappointed. The crust is phenomenal. It can even withstand a 30min meal without getting soggy. It took me quite a few slices to get full, but I eventually did. I could finish the entire large pie on a good day. La Rustique in JC prob wins out on flavor and freshness, but their crust is even thinner and pies even more expensive. Yes, it's possible. Yes, it's true. Generous on toppings? Yes. Generous on price? No. My iPhone pics came out crappy cuz it was darker than usual inside.
-Rotella ($8) [prosciutto di parma rolls with arugula, roasted pepper, & smoked mozzarella] - what a great lazy man's food, reminded me of an Italian sushi roll (also 6pcs), generously drizzled with some type of green cream sauce, good job.
-Meat Lover's Large Pie ($24 + truffle oil (+$3) [marinara sauce & cheese, pepperoni, andouille sausage, sweet italian sausage] - it's all about the crust here, the toppings were pretty generic, prefer the difara/grimaldi's toppings more actually
Total came out to $23/pp after everything

Pizza Gruppo is a decent place, but it doesn't live up to the glowing reviews you see here. I was reccomended it by a friend who lives in the glorfied collection of projects (not necessarily a bad thing) that is Stuy Town. I came with a friend to get the 2 plain slices and a drink lunch special ($4), while he got a goat cheese panini special Both were definitely a good deal for the area, and my friend really enjoyed his panini (although it was his first time eating goat cheese). One of my slices was much fresher than the other, but I didn't care all that much. They use a good cheese combination, and it mixes very well with the sauce. The crust is very thin, and done in a cracker-style similiar to Joe & Pat's of Staten Island. However, it was burned on the edges which cause the extremely thin outer crust to crumble easily. The crust could've used more flavor, and the sauce could have used more flavorful and substance and the cheese and crust completely overshadowed it. The combined product, however was solid, and the lunch deal is hard to beat. I wouldn't rush back here, but is a solid lunch option.
I went here for a late night craving. Their pizza is very thin and crispy. I went with their marinara, tomato, and basil pizza and it was great. The 16 inch pie was $20. I'm excited to have a favorite pizza joint in my neighborhood. And, they also have a nice bar.
I've only lived in New York for a couple of weeks, and this is my second pizza experience in this great city. After a few hours of pretending to be paparazzi -- wearing all black and mobbing through the city with my coworkers carrying fancy cameras -- and taking pictures of the uber-cool locals (who are more than happy to pose for a stranger!), we were famished. The establishment is a bit boring, somewhat rustic, but the owner had a reassuring confidence that the food lived up to.
This pizza is really, really good. The crust is obviously hand made and as thin as thin can be. I mean, with the fresh mozzarella slices and sparing use of sauce, I felt like I was in Italy for awhile. We had a large Classica (fresh tomatoes and basil), a large white four cheese pizza with spinach, as well as a personal Big Pineapple. We dusted it all quick, and were soon back on the street. If I'm back in this neighborhood and craving some real pizza, I'll duck into Pizza Gruppo again.
Great pizza with a paper-thin crust, and really good lunch specials. The plain slice, small garden salad, and drink for $5 is a steal.
I took my pizza aficionado brother here for lunch when he was in town, and he loved his pepperoni slices so much that he wanted to go back for dinner!
Service is quick and friendly, and it's a cute spot to hang out with friends while listening to the solid jukebox selections. Love this place.
pretty good pizza. Luzzo's and Lombardi's are better and here is why:
They have better crust, sauce.
NY pizza is all about the sauce and crust for me. Gruppo crust was a bit strange. image if the middle of the pie has good traditional NY thin crust. Crisp and chewy, but as you get closer to the edges of the pie it turns into matzo. Kinda weird.
It was good tho.
Luzzo's is still my #1 in the E Village area.
The best large pepperoni pizza in the world. They make it with thin crust and thinly sliced large pepperonis!!! I mean, the diameter of these pepperonis are about 2 inches!
a few yelp friends gave pizza gruppo high marks, and since i am fortunate enough to live in the sacred 'delivery' zone of this fine pizzeria, i decided to give it a shot. peter d's recommendations are basically the gospel, and, the menu looked really great from what i saw online in my food investigation of this place. pizza gruppo has several custom pie options, and they all sound appetizing and delicious. i've tried their mushroom pie, which is covered in portobello & shitake with white truffle oil, and it's remarkable. i also love the chipotle chicken pie, which is shredded chicken marinated in chipotle sauce, sweet & delicious vidalia onions, cilantro, and pineapple. the flavor combination is great, this is my favorite custom pie that i've tried from pizza gruppo.
what i always end up doing when i am looking at their delivery menu is i take their topping options and concoct my own pizza. granted, their fresh toppings aren't cheap but i love trying to make my own blend of yummy toppings the same way pizza gruppo does. i am actually unemployed right now and could use a job, maybe they could hire me to create pizzas. i've made ricotta, andouille sausage, and sundried tomatoes. also, jalapenos, smoked bacon, and roasted garlic. their meatballs, hot italian sausage, fresh basil and caramelized onions make a great pie too, because their meatballs are really good. they're not loaded with bread crumbs like most pizza places do, so they don't have that grainy dry taste.
i also love their panini sandwiches. the tuna melt, the prosciutto & fresh mozzarella, the meatball and fresh mozzarella. their garlic bread is fabulous and they even have great pies and brownies for dessert if you've got room in your big fat stomach for them.
but you know what? even though this is my favorite pizza place in my neighborhood, a place that gets my business weekly and always will for as long as i live nearby, a place that makes amazing tasting food, i can't give it five stars, because i always, always, always, ask for a cup of sauce with my delivery and they forget it every single time. they brought it once, the first time, and never have since then.
so you get four stars pizza gruppo. because you don't fucking listen.
UPDATE:
Gruppo is trying to make me broke! I LOVE the big hawaiin pie. still tastes delicious as all hell. but for a personal pan it's $12! yeah the small pie for one person! prices have gone up. ur whackkkk gruppo.

ABSOLUTELY ABSOLUTELY mothereffin delicious! Came here last sunday night as a group of 5. The ONLY drawback is it's pretty cramped in there. Other than that, it was a great time. Service is good, wine and beer was good (two thumbs up for Stella on draft), pizza of course was topnotch, and we took over the jukebox playing everything from The Doors to Sting to Led Zepellin to The Beatles. Fantastic time. The next night, i had to babysit my little cousins and requested that they order Gruppo so i had it not only the second night but heated up 2 slices the next day for lunch at work. STILL tasty!!! Best thin crust pizza in my life. Also, the Caesar salad there is the best caesar salad i have everrrrr had.
Side note: growing up as a kid in NJ, i never cared for pizza. now having NY pizza, i feel blessed.
Really, really good thin crust pizza. Delivery arrived in under 30 minutes on a Sunday night.
The cookies are fresh - order one at the bar and they'll serve it hot on a doily, like your grandmother would if she were a bartender.
Nice wine selection, for a pizzeria.
They have food.
Oh yeah, the pizza - it's wonderful! Oh, you want the meat lover's pie, the greek, the classic, the pluto, and all the rest.
Price is what knocks it down a notch - a large deluxe pie is about $33. Portions/slice sizes were far, far too small for that price.
The pizza is italian style - little pies instead of slices. Pricing is way off.
Go-to East Village spot for pizza delivery.
My old roommates and I had a ritual: The Soup, Gruppo (pizza + salad) and sorbet. No matter what happened with our boyfriends, school, or work, we made time for this each week.
Sibling to Posto and Vezzo: See Posto Review http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Dropped by Gruppo one afternoon via suggestion by Jeff C. His high praise of the perfectly thin crust was more than enough to take a venture to Alphabet City to see what all the fuss is about...
The Décor...
The modestly enchanting décor provides a subtle yet welcoming dining experience. Everything ranging to the modestly sized tables, small candle centerpieces and exposed brick, adds to the subtlety of that dining establishment that's best suited for patrons looking for a neasy dining experience.
The Food...
Appetizer: Rotella - The application starts with combination of Arugola, Roasted Red Peppers, and Fresh Mozzarella that's rolled in a strip of Proscuitto di Parma. The consumable is finished off with a zig zag of basil aioli during the plating process. The petite sized appetizer is best consumed in a single bite. The taste of the application can best be described as a combination of the marquis flagship of rustic Italian ingredients that's combined to allow the appreciation of these ingredients by the consumer. The first taste of the application is derived from the mild saltiness of the Proscuitto di Parma. The saltiness then gives way to the aromatic cleansing of the Fresh Arugola, Roasted Peppers, and Fresh Mozzarella. The mild salt detection during the early stages of the tasting process allows for the natural and earthy flavors of the Fresh Arugola, Roasted Peppers, and Fresh Mozzarella to be greatly enhanced. A consumer will find that in addition to the superb execution of flavors used in the application, the dish can also be used as a teaching instrument on classic Italian ingredients.
Main Course: Margherita Pizza - The pizza starts with a thin (and I mean THIN) crust that's topped with a heavy quantity of Fresh Mozzarella, Tomato Sauce, Fresh Basil, and Freshly Diced Tomatoes. There's little debate that the pizza is a true thin crust! The crust can best be comparable of that of finely baked potato chip. The first thing worth noting on the pizza is that the aromatics are comparable to few and far between. The fresh ingredients produces such an effervescent vapor that makes the indulgence process even more enticing than the visual presentation of the dish. During initial consumption, it is evident that the finely baked thin crust produces a welcoming crispy texture that gives the Pizza a nice contrast in structure to the elements of the application. Unfortunately, beyond the perfectly executed dough crust, the other elements used in the application did not produce the welcoming sensation that's evident of highly acclaimed pizza. The most tarnished element of the application is lack of tart flavoring in the sauce. In essence, the sauce seemed rather bland in nature and did not provide the proper heartiness that's found in traditional tomato sauce. In addition, the use of the freshly ripe tomatoes overwhelmed all of the other elements used in the application. I do applaud the pizza creators innovation in providing welcoming fresh ingredients in the application but unfortunately, the taste was burdened by that of the ripe tomatoes, which made all other elements secondary.
There is a high possibility of a future return to Gruppo. If that is indeed the case, perhaps the omission of the freshly dice tomatoes used in the application would produce a more profound effect during consumption. Nevertheless, I must compliment the perfectly baked thin crust. This was one aspect of the dining experience that was most appreciated.
Excellent pizza. We've eaten here a lot and the food is always great. Nice, mellow atmosphere too.
I usually visit posto but if in the east village I'll wlak over to pizza gruppo. I prefer posto but gruppo is pretty much the same. This is a warm relaxing joint that has wine or beer if you want to have a little beverage. The salads are yummy but the thin crust pizza rocks. This is a good staple to Alpahabet City residents
So thin... so crusty... so tasty... I want to give this place 5 stars, but I would have to try another pizza with sauce first. We had the Formaggio Bianco (ricotta, mozzarella, basil & spinach) so I was extra impressed with how the crust was so crunchy compared to the spinach pizza I had at Lombardi's which was a little soft & soggy. I do wish there had been more spinach though. The waiter was so polite and nice, but I could have done with more water refills. Definitely a delicious pizza, but I'm not enough of a thin-crust purist to say it's my new favorite.
When I visited NY, I stayed in an apt about a block away from this place. The first night I had passed it in a cab and decided to go there for dinner. It's a small place, was dimly lit when I visited and not too crowded. I ordered 2 pies, some garlic bread and whatever the bartender recommended for wine (which he corked for me and served me a glass as I was waiting for my dinner to get cooked). The bartender was really nice and the food was great. Nothing like a NY style pie on your first night of vacation.
PS: Love the neighborhood too!
