Review Highlights
Pizza Box, is without a doubt, "One of the Best Slices" in the City, far
Superior to the "Grossly Overrated Joe's Pizza" just a block and a half away. Joe's is good, "It's Defiantly Not the Best" as so many followers think, and the "Slice at Pizza Box is Better." On top of that, you can sit down, inside or out. Yes there is a really nice garden patio in back of the place. You gotta stand up like a dog at Joe's.
I'll take Pizza Box over Joe's any day of the week. And I've been living in the neighborhood for almost 20 years.
Pizza Box isn't breaking any new ground, nor will it be mistaken for a historical New York eatery, but what it is - is home to my favorite slice in the Village.
I can't be too sure of exactly what draws me here. I've been lucky enough to be devouring good pizza all my life, so The Box, again, is no revelation. But it's cheap, satisfying, and probably most importantly, reliable.
Chances are you've been scorned before by a pizzeria - be it they didn't have the same toppings as last time, delivery took too long or never came, or worse, your slice just tasted different. Somehow, wrong. Well, Pizza Box always tastes right - as comforting and familiar as that Seinfeld re-run you've seen fifty times and will be sat through number fifty-one and counting.
Don't be alarmed by the rejected Bronx Zoo exhibit of a patio in the back - the one that perfectly recreates the natural habitat of Northeast wildlife. And by that, I mean squirrels and pigeons. They love it back there. Some people may shy away from scarfin' down slices alongside our furred and feathered friends, but I find it endearing.
There should really be designated, unorthodox places in the city where stressed-out New Yorkers can go to unwind for maybe, say, a lunch hour, and, I don't know, pretend that they've gone crazy or something and can feel at peace with just looking at all the little animals and leaves on the trees. I mean, it's not like I've done that or anything, but Pizza Box's backyard could be on that list. I'm just sayin'.
The pizza was alright. There is nothing to rave about but it's in the area of a sea of bars so the location is ideal and the pizza did its job.
I was all excited to take my sister to Pizza Box. When she saw it, her exact words were "This is the hole in the wall you're all excited about?!? Oh, and they have a garrrrden!" Well, it seemed as if Pizza Box heard her and behaved accordingly because tonight---PB wasn't its typical handsome self.
In the past, it seemed as though PB had plenty of fresh pies on hand to quickly replace the slices which seemed to fly out the door, so I didn't hesitate when I saw one lonely slice on the pan. "Do you have any fresh pies?" I asked. The pizza man told me that if I wanted a fresh pie, I'd have to order one---I was really surprised! Never had I ever seen anyone wait for a pie.
I said, "Sure, no problem"---I was here for pizza and brought my sister. As the pizza man got to work on my pie, a few moments past and then I saw the more elderly pizza man pull some brand new pies from below. In the words of Cartman's mother, "What? What? WHAT???" I'd been taken for a ride by the Pizza Box! Not cool!
More uncool was the fact that when my sister came back from the restroom, she said the following: "I never use this word, but the restroom was "rank"!" And OH MY, was it RANK!!!!! Now I've heard it said that you can judge a place by the cleanliness of its restroom...but well, I really don't want to do that given how deeeelicious Pizza Box is...but after my experiences this evening, I may have to. :/
And to top it all off, my fiance said the pizza guy who got me to buy a new pie stole a look at my tush! Pizza Box, why you do me like that?

I really like Pizza Box. I'd have to say it's the best Neopolitan/NY slice I've had in quite some… Read more »
Probably the best simple NY style pizza i've found. Great anytime of year for a quick bite, but particulary in spring/summer when you can sit outside.
"An awesome slice of pizza isn't worth buying from some asswipe. "
i don't know what that means but this place has an awesome backyard that's ideal to come down from a panic attack in. recommended slice, too.
This is where I get my pizza fix when I'm having pizza cravings in the area. But let me be completely honest... I only came here because my friend used to live in the apartment upstairs. Going anywhere else (down the street to Joe's or something) was too far for just a slice. But now I am a loyal (when I'm in the area) customer.
It's not the most amazing pizza you'll have in New York, but it'll get the job done. They're not rolling the dough in front of your face or serenading you with sweet Italian lullabies. I don't even think they're Italian! haha :P It's just a good place to get cheap pizza when you need it ASAP! But I have to give only 3 stars because the cheese isn't fresh/gooey, the place isn't always the cleanest, they don't accept cards (ATM inside, but who likes fees?), and the workers like to give the sexy eye and make comments while women try to decide which greasy pizza has the least amount of calories.
I came here for the first time ever today. I would have never guessed that a place like this existed in the middle of a busy city. I liked that I was able to enjoy a fresh slice of pizza and relax in the beautiful and amazingly quiet backyard. It was a great place to just kick back and enjoy yourself in the middle of the day.
good simple slice of pizza but clearly cleanliness is an issue here. crust is thicker than Bleecker St pizza and the toppings are more fresh.
Affordable and good NY style pizza. I stopped here at 2am after celebrating St. Patty's Day in the village. The pizza definitely hit the spot. I then returned a day later for another slice. Even sober the large slice was good.
They have different toppings but I think the classic cheese with pepperoni was my favorite.
Cooked to perfection (no burns here!), with excellent toppings/cheese/sauce and crust. Standard pizza faire though, so if you're looking for 'different', go elsewhere. The large is huge, and only a dollar more than the medium (which is 2 inches smaller). One topping large = $20, one topping medium = $19. Cheese only, $18 and $17, respectively. Fast and friendly delivery guy too!
Growing up in the area, I used to go to this pizza place as a child until I realized how dirty the whole place was. Thus it was not a surprise when they briefly shut down due to some health code violation. Most of these guys don't use gloves and the place just looks like a piece of shit (and it hasn't changed at all since I was a kid, two decades ago). Please do yourself a favor and shell out a few more bucks for the amazing pizza at Arturo's, just a few blocks away. Unless sanitation is not a priority for you.
This is a great place to go and get a few slices of pizza. It's open virtually any time you'd want to be in there, and the guys behind the counter are really nice. The prices here are good and the pizza comes hot out of the oven. This isn't to say that it's one of the top pizza places in NYC in my opinion, but it's a really solid place to get some New York style pizza.
This is such a great place to grab a quick slice or 2 and maybe a beer. The pizza is great..... and they have a garden in the back that is open during the summer.
Best by-the-slice pizza i have had in NY.
By far my favorite pizza in the city. The sauce seemed to have a different taste to it than all the other places located on practically every corner. This sauce makes the pizza so great. Besides the sauce the slices were a decent size and the prices were comparable to all other pizza shops. They rarely had slices that had been sitting cold all day like could be found at some places. Rarely did I have a slice without craving more. If I ever commit a crime and then sent to death row, this is my final meal!!!
The restaurant itself has a nice quiet peaceful back patio that you can sit out on while eating. And they actually have 2 bathrooms for customers (true it isn't they cleanest looking, but at least they do have one for you). Overall definitely worth trying out.
Aren't people forgetting something? This place has beer on TAP. So if you don't want the atmosphere of a bar (who doesn't) or feel like being 18 again, order a couple of loud, bland, mediocre slices of pizza and one quiet Bud on draft.
And then drink heavily. Ever get drunk at a pizza joint? Right here that's happening. Freshman year was such a naive time. I want to give this place a "spendy" price range because well after 6 pints and a couple slices you'll rival Nobu. Maybe.
Not quite John's down the street, but as a place for when you only need a quick slice or two, it's good.
I think it was: $3 for pepperoni, $2.25 for cheese, $1 for a small soda, and $3 for a draft beer. Subs were $6 and Lasagna was $10.
Had the pepperoni and was satisfied. You can do better but it's not disappointing either.
Dudes, what is UP?!
Why so many bad reviews for amazingly tasty Pizza Box? I loved the flavorful pizza and the beer was even better. The outside seating area is nice for afterhours hanging out.
Minus one for the most disgusting bathroom experience so far.
But there was no line!!!
What else can you ask for? Free pizza?!
It's good pizza but nothing special. Really depends on if you get it fresh or not. I think the really friendly staff makes it worthwhile. An awesome slice of pizza isn't worth buying from some asswipe. I appreciate all the smiles and all that.
Can you say "AMAZING PIZZA"? say it!! This has to be the only place in NYC were the pizza is worth the $2.75 price tag for a plain slice. With the prize of gas and milk going up every other day it's nice to go to a pizzeria that doesn't use CHEAP cheese; you know what I'm talking about the kind that looks and tastes like cardboard after being out for an hour. It's delicious and gooey and is exactly what a pizza should taste like. I always have to stop there to chow down and the pizza guys are sooooooooo nice and know what they're doing. It also has a huge outdoor space and serves beer and wine.
Dee (below) and I crave this all the time!!! is a must when we go out. So delicious!!! true NYC pizza. Fresh, hot, cheesy, yuuuum!!!
Let's face it. It's mediocre. But when you're starving, it's better than nothing.
I came here three years ago with some friends by accident; we got lost in the village and found this before the metro station. I'm back in NYC for the week and I still remembered how much I loved this place. If that doesn't say something, I don't know what would.
A great place to get pizza by the slice when you are passing thru the area . Love the crust .
"PIZZA BOX" 5-stars best name for any pizza place in New York

BEER ON TAP
PATIO
Wow I can't believe this place is so under-appreciated among the pizza elite. I went to Ben's first because that was recommended, but the slow service and really old looking slices turned me off.
Pizza was damn good, on par with John's, only here you CAN get a slice. Crust was crispy and bubbly, cheese was greasy, fresh moz tasted fresh. The real story is the sauce (my most important consideration). It was sweet and tangy. The pizza here has almost like a sit-down restaurant quality. The best part is the pizza was being made and served by a little old Italian looking man, not a bunch of underpaid El Salvadorians.
I don't understand why this place isn't adorned with awards the way so many mediocre pizza places in the city are. I never would have come here if not by accident. Plus it's not crowded and there is a lovely garden outside. There is beer on tap (unfortunately lame domestic selection) but you can get a little bottle of decent Chianti if you want to drink.
Top notch, not quite Lombardi's good, but for the price and the atmosphere, the best pizza in this part of town.
I love to go to Pizza Box in the spring and summer because they have an outdoor eating area in the back. It's enclosed by a high wooden fence, but you are surrounded by trees and fresh air, and seem far away from the city street noise. The pizza is so delicious...just enough cheese, and nice thin crust. There isn't too much sauce, either, and I love that! The owners are very friendly, and will recognize your face if you go in a few times. And if you have a child with you, they'll cut up the kid's slice of pizza into tiny bites...perfect (and then you don't have to do it!).
Best place to go in the summer for a slice with friends. Backyard has cute atmosphere. I didn't pay much attention to the variety but it has all the basic pizza place necessities. The pizza is good, nothing fantastic, but good. Prices- reasonable.
Overrated. Didn't love the sauce. Or the service. But, the crust was really good; way better than SF or DC pizza. Prefer stromboli big time.
Above average pizza place with a great garden in the back. I highly recommend the cheeseless pizza (ask for a slice of "marinara"), which comes in square slices. The sauce is very rich and tasty and the crust is crunchier than on the cheese pizzas.
Yummy Pizza.That is all.
Best flavor around!
Not so good. The pizza was so bland that we tossed it out and headed to a different pizza place. C'mon, there is no excuse for bad pizza in NYC!
Of course....NOBODY does Pizza like NYC - if you can find a good Pizzeria anymore...you'll find it in Greenwich/Manhattan at place called the Pizza Box - simple as that!!. Unfortunately, NYC has lost its pizza footing and you have to search around for the best places where just a few years ago you'd find the most wonderful, original 'Brooklyn style' pizza on every corner. But at the PIZZA BOX its a different story. Large, thin slices with crusty puff edge slightly browned but not charred except for the underside of the slice, thats always a little brown but not cracker hard. The crusts are always edible! Made with buffalo mozzerella and authentic wonderful sauce - that is too gorgeous for words, keeping it simple - yeah for a great huge slice of cheese pizza, the "Pizza Box" in NYC does it perfect! A no - frills place, grab 2 slices or buy the pie and take a train or walk back from where ever you came - or take a table - it's all good! They also have a patio outback. Two years ago the Italian owner was still behind the counter and that makes all the difference, my friends. Now, most of the Pizzerias have lost their edge giving way to more "gourmet" tastes (ahem) to mimic Calif style pizza. All I want is the real thing baby. If you live in Calif the closest you might come to a good slice of the pie is at " Z Pizza." Close, yes, but still oh so far. Brooklyn foodies should post where the best Pizzeria's are - the kind we use to have when we were kids ---not the nouveau style stuff that is laden with gross greasy cheese, no-taste sauce and a crust with no flavor either wafer thin or thick as cake. Californian's, Chicagoans and Seattle-ites should post where the best Pizzeria's are in their areas too. If you ate Pizza 15 years plus years ago in in NYC or Brooklyn, you know what I'm talking about. Snarf it down at the Pizza Box, I'm drooling just dreaming of it right now. ;-)
maybe it's because i ate a slice of pizza from this place every single day of my childhood, or maybe it's because the owner used to know my name (i think) when i was 10, but to this day, i still believe it's the best in town. it's everything a pizza place should be: fast, cheap, good, and a little dirty. also, their cheese-to-sauce-to-crust ratio (or CTSTC) is a perfect 10. don't forget to have the old "who can put on the most garlic powder" contest the next time you grab a slice with your friends!
pizza box is amazing. and anyone who doesnt think so might as well fall off the earth right now. i think i had their whole wheat every day for an entire summer when i was working on w. houston-- totally worth it.
one of the many good slices of pizza we had in NY. very fresh and the back patio is very peaceful.
