I just got one of my most favorite haircuts ever from Lisa at Pitch. The whole experience was great starting with the place's low-key ambience and attitude. I got there early and the presumed owner kept offering me water and tea. They were cool with my weird request to lop off 10 inches of my ponytail so I could donate it.

The cut was great. Lisa had the perfect combination of giving her professional advice, but asking my opinion. (Sometimes I need a little guidance.) I'm usually not into salon small talk, but I genuinely enjoyed chatting with her. Also, they have a kitty. Always a bonus. I'd gotten my haircut there by someone else a few years ago, and it was nice, albeit a little overstyled. But I walked out of Pitch this week feeling like a million bucks.

I recently got my hair done at Pitch and I LOVE IT!!! The new owner, Curtis, did a Japanese thermal straightening on my hair and it has never ever looked so good! I've had my hair chemically straightened three times in the past and every time it either comes out still wavey or huge chunks break off and I end up with nearly bald patches or it just looks flat and oily. This time my hair is perfectly straight, no breaking, AND it still has its natural volume!! I also love the new cut he gave me, not to mention the free wine. I recommend pitch to all of my friends, I even have a friend from San Diego who is waiting to get her haircut so she can have Curtis do it!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

I just got my hair colored and cut at Pitch for the first time. I have to say it was an awesome experience and my hair looks amazing!!! (pics will follow as soon as i take some). Curtis, the new owner, is so creative. He gave me an idea on a style that I never would have come up with on my own. Everyone who has seen the new look is freaking out! They love it! A woman at work described it as really suiting me perfectly. How could Curtis have know that it would be so flattering. Anyway, the environment is great with all of the beautiful artwork on the walls and the great music. I drove an hour and a half to see Curtis and it was well worth it. I would never let anyone else touch my hair. Thanks Curtis! and much success to you and the salon!

Its worth the price...i keep returning to Mac (i always remind him not to wear white shoes)...the atmosphere is chill, the service is spot on, (i personally liked the cat that used to be there before they changed ownership)...i get weird colors done and its done with perfection each time...

I swear by pitch!!! (im actually going to try to get a friend of mine in the door to get a new hair cut as a b-day present...to me its a spa day with results)...

love love love it

I'm picky about getting my haircut. I fell in love with a stylist and he moved away... so I followed him!

Curtis is AMAZING! He is worth the drive up from Santa Cruz to see. He is friendly and great at what he does. If you hate getting your haircut and are anxious about how it will turn out, Curtis can put you at ease and make you look great!

The salon is beautiful with are from great local artists and it feels like you are at a spa with the way you are treated from the second you walk in the door.

My first cut & highlight here in June 2006.
I look so great!   Seriously FABULOUS!!

The cut is perfect!!  The color is so incredibly natural!!!
Compliments abound!!!!!  Love, love, love it!
Awesome stylist/colorist!!!

Yeay!  Five stars!!!!  Wait, no A MILLION STAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRSSSSS!!!!

I went back again.

The cut wasn't that great.

Highlights had a few "hot spots" or "bleed throughs."

Stylist does not remember me.  At all.  Each time he coyly says "Oh.  Have.  We.  Met ?"

Which is fine, you don't HAVE to remember me, but isn't it nice customer service when someone does?  And why would you keep reinventing someones color?  WRITE THAT SHIT DOWN.

The first time was great but the following visits never measured up.

I have serious trust issues with hairdressers.  I had the same barber from my first haircut until I was nearly 21 and since then have only gone to one guy.  He lives in Vermont and so,  since I have lived in San Francisco, I've only had my hair cut once every six months.

I had a perfect experience at Pitch and only withhold one star because of price.  i just can't get used to dropping $60 on a haircut.  And they have a cat in the shop and I am allergic.

Lisa was friendly yet professional and worked with the lousy photo I showed her, a picture of some movie star I have never heard of, upon which my friends reached consensus when I was seeking a new "do".

She asked good questions when she thought I might want to differ in certain ways from my photo and put a lot of time and care into making sure my hair was how I wanted it, but without letting me make poor decisions before she explained the consequences.  I recommend her without hesitation.

I used my new best friend Yelp to find a hair salon.  I wanted a salon that had very convenient hours (including Sundays), used high quality products and that other Yelpers reviewed with above average ratings.

I was not disappointed in my choice of Pitch.  First of all, I was happy there was ample parking nearby.  Walking into the salon, the atmosphere was relaxing, music was great and the owner and resident cat, Buzz greeted me upon arrival.  My stylist/colorist Mac worked with me to obtain just the style and color I was looking for.

I am very happy with the services that I received and I am already scheduled for my next appointment.  What are you waiting for?

I just visited Pitch for the first time. The new owner has done a fabulous job renovating this salon, very relaxing atmoshere. Curtis has made many improvements, such as the front window display and new sideboards for the glass of wine that is offered. His stylists are very professional and seem to love what they do.  Curtis cut my hair and seemed to know  just what I was looking for. The cut has gotten me many compliments and I'm eager to return to add a little exciting color to my new cut.

I just had 16 inches of hair cut off to raise money for a fundraiser. Curtis made sure he was very clear on what I wanted done before he started cutting. When I said I wanted as much as possible he took the time to pig tail it and cut as close as he could. He is also skilled enough to give me a super cute do. I still look very feminine with my very short hair and have gotten TONS of compliments, even other stylists have come up to tell me how great my cut is!
Pitch is also a fun place to be, the three stylists who were there were all very friendly and talkative. There is great artwork on the walls and good music. YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY GO THERE

I have to start by saying I'm half African American and Caucasian. So having mixed hair hasn't always been fun because not everyone knows how to deal with such thick, curly textured hair.  I've been to shops that specialize in African American hair but I always left with really greasy, oiled up hair. I have to tell you I'm in LOVE!!! Not only did my stylist Curtis make my hair the straightest its ever been using a Japanese thermal straightening, but he cut my hair in an amazing A-line I thought my face could never fit. I'm so glad I took his advice! Everyone thinks is sexy and fun and well, I agree! The salon also has great products for all hair types. The atmosphere in general with upbeat music, beverages and other sociable employees was enjoyable. I'm partial to Curtis because he has such a great sense of humor haha  BUT I will definitely be driving from San Jose in the future to SF for him to make me look fabulous. And if hes not available I saw what the other stylist were capable of and in all honesty I would trust them with my hair.

*Yelp has the hours wrong. So definitely call to check the hours
*There is no longer a "shop cat"
*Stylist currently there are Mac, Lisa, Curtis and Jarr

dealan is my new BEST FRIEND.

My hair went from gross to gorgeous in just one appointment.

Checked out the salon from previous yelp reviews and couldnt be happier with my cut. Emmanuel (sorry if I butcher the spelling) was super friendly and even served me my favorite kind of tea.

The prices were much more affordable than what I am used to paying and I thought an hour long hair cut with much precision is TOTALLY worth my $55 bucks. Not to mention I got one of the best blow dry/style I've ever had.

What I'm even more amped about is their new product line from Paris thats going to come out- just put a sample of the conditioning oil on my ends this morning before heading to the gym and my hair feels and smells amazing.

YAY DEALAN YAY EMMANUEL!
thanks for putting up with me, my ugly hairstyles magazine, and my endless boy gossip.

see ya soon :)

I was getting my bike tuned up across the street  and stepped into this place by chance. I asked for a trim and longish straight bangs. What I got was a good 4 inches off  and bangs that I hate to the point that I bobby pin them to the side everyday. The stylist, Daelan tried to convince me to get a completely different haircut when I first told him what I wanted, then pretty much proceeded to commence with his plan even though I told him otherwise. Granted that he did put effort into finding a picture of the bangs that I wanted ( scrolling on his treo) the end result was a horrible compromise between what he wanted and what I wanted. I miss my hair. Had I paid 10 bucks for the haircut, I wouldn't be pissed, but $55 is a ridiculous amount for something that I can't wait to grow out. Maybe you'll have better luck?

The only positive thing I can say about Pitch was the nice rose wine I had while getting my hair done.  Mac was my stylist and was a complete nightmare!  Not only was he flighty and weird, but he also apparently didn't listen to me at all when I said I didn't want any bleach used on my hair for highlights.  And it only hit me that he did use it when he had to put toner on my hair when we were done.  I asked him why, and he said because of the bleach!  Plus he darkened my overall color when I all I wanted was a touchup of my highlights!  It gets worse...

When he was washing my hair, he did it so abrubtly then when he went to comb out my hair, there was a HUGE knot in it that he had to CUT out!  And he was wondering how the knot got there?!!
I only went for a highlight, no cut.  Thank god.  And then when I went to pay they said it was $160, when they quoted me $90 to 120 over the phone for a partial highlight.  In the end, they charged my $125.  Plus they won't let you charge whole service and tip on your Visa. You have to pay cash for the tip.  I wrote a check, but then later stopped payment on it when I really thought about my awful experience.
And just one last note- my appt. started at 2:30pm, and I didn't leave until 6pm!  And I had a black tie event that started at 6.  Is it possible to give this salon zero stars?!

I LOVE this place.  I am not going anywhere else to get my hair done in the city.

Lisa was my stylist, and I went in with a horrible awful haircut from another salon across the city that cost me like $120.  The lady there didn't listen when I said I never do anything with my hair, and gave me a cut that looks awful, limp, askew, and dirty unless I style it on a daily basis.  Not happening, so I looked ugly and my ego suffered for a couple months.

Then I found Lisa (thanks Yelp!) and she fixed me!!!  I went in - they have awesome hours, open late on weekdays - and was greeted with a friendly, low-key smile.  I got to pet the cat while Lisa gathered her stuff, and they offered my wine - yum!  Lisa recognized straight away that the cut was not flattering for me, and after hearing that I subscribe to the "wash-n-go" philosophy, cut me a style that has lasted over three months now.  She gave me awesome sexy bangs that are stylish without being too hipster, and cut a length that works well for my face shape.  She was just so sweet and relaxed that it was just a very pleasant experience.  I walked out with this smile on my face that wouldn't disappear for like another couple days, because she made me go from feeling hideous and ugly to being stylish, beautiful, and attractive.  I can't recommend her talents enough.  Whatever price I paid for the cut, it was worth it twenty times over.  (For you curious, I think it was somewhere in the 50-60 neighborhood, which I thought was EXTREMELY reasonable for the city.)

I've also been to their colorist (I wish I remembered his name - Greg? Sean? sorry!!!) who is a HOOT and a half. He had a shaved head, which obviously made me nervous for a colorist, but he picked the PERFECT color for me - a great cranberry red that hasn't really faded.  Again, top notch talent.

My only complaint about the place is their wierd shampooing stations - for some reason I've never been comfortable in them.  The chairs don't lean back properly or they're the wrong height for me or something.

You won't be disappointed with Pitch - they have fabulous service and very talented stylists, for an extremely reasonable price!!!!

Thanks to yelper suggestions to get my birthday haircut at Pitch - I made an appointment with Daelyn. I was greeted with a glass of white wine (not from a box or jug) and Daelyn and I strategized the plan for my locks. The place is easy to get to, right on the N or 71 between Cole Valley and Haight. It is super clean (I even checked out the bathroom) and has a warm and calming feel to it. It did cost more than I typically pay, but it was worth it. I was given a semi perm darkening....sexy...and some jagged layers around the front. Not too drastic of a change but a solid freshening up for sure. I met my husband around the corner at Kezar and he was definitely pleased with the results. I will return to Daelyn...he was fun, funny, pleasant and talented. Plus he gave me a nice little scalp massage during the washing.

Mac's color is the best! I get the most natural look ever - he is a gem!! I never have to worry about how it will come out - he needs so little direction that I can go to Pitch whenever I'm in S.F. and sit back and relax with the Pitch Cat, talk to Emanuel, read CIE (is that how it's spelled?) or get pleasantly high on the rose in the afternoon.
Pitch is the only place I get my hair done outside NYC -- ok, that sounds rude and it's not like every salon in NY is gr8t but Pitch really has a nice vibe.  -C

I went and saw Rosa. She did my hair. I love it. What can I say? She gave me the hottest highlights and a super sexy cut. She obviously knows what shes doing. I asked about her experience and she told me about her training in color. To be honest I don't know how she can be so patient, but she did it and shes Rockin' it! Thanks!

I had a decent experience here.  I was desperate for a haircut on a Sunday, and they were the only ones to actually pick up the phone on a Sunday morning and give me an appointment later that day.  I got my hair done by Dan, who didn't initially inspire me with his non-confident stance on everything (every time I sought his opinion on a color, style, or decision he was very non-commital to anything).  But somehow I left there with a cut and color I totally loved.  The entire experience, especially for a slow Sunday, was pretty long - almost three hours.  This would be my salon of choice if it weren't for the fact it's an hour drive away.

I wanted to like Pitch, I really did. The salon has a sleek, minimal design and it's small enough to feel cozy. They offered me wine around lunchtime and promised that the shop cat would sit in my lap after they washed my hair.  Did I mention they have a shop cat? Nearly enough to win me over. My problem is that when I asked my stylist for ideas she wasn't very helpful in suggesting anything. I was looking for something a little more exciting and ended up feeling like I looked like I went to a cheapo chain place, since all she suggested was giving me a typical straight across the ends cut. The haircut I got was fine, but it didn't work with the movement/shape of my hair. I need someone I bit more creative and in touch with what cuts are best for different kinds of hair. I think I will try somewhere else next time.

So i have been sporting a serious afro over the last week, got the daily candy email about this new place which happens to be a block from my house, decided to get shorn.
Turns out the place is pretty nice. THey hooked me right up with an appt time, were prompt with the call backs, and even had the sheep shears to shave off my man-fro.
Everyone was friendly, seemed a little pricey, but probably worth it.

I get the feeling this place is always a little "too eager" for my business, which makes me fear that it is another local salon with a short lifespan in our competitive and fickle city.

I'd like to keep this place full of customers because I think this is actually a very good salon.  The haircuts are hot, the color is beautifully done, and the stylists are flexible enough to listen to their clients while still adding creativity and edginess that keeps the people beautiful and urban-trendy.

The guy, Mac, has done my hair the last couple times.  He's focused, sweet-natured, and cuts my hair hella cool.

I suggest you give this place a try.  You've got nothing to lose, except your hair (and it always grows back).

Any salon that serves white wine instead of boring old water while  you get pampered definitely deserves 5 stars :)   not to mention the super sey cut and color I got from Mac. He is THE best. I have to say that I was nervous about having a new stylist do my hair cause I had been going to see Francais for the past year. But Mac was funny, attentive and totally sexified me :-D   definitely cannot wait to go back next time. oh... AND they have the cutest cat that lives at the salon.

Two firsts: first time I have been truly happy with my haircut. and my first time to have my hair colored/hilited.  I adore Mac and think he's a talented genius and geniunely cool and nice!  I could tell right away that he had it and he didn't have to put on airs to cover up any lack of ability. Mac made me look great (sexy long hair with a layer, subtle hilites) and feel happy.  i think that people respond to me much more positively now too.   oh yeah, the salon is really cool-clean with clean understated design, yet very comfortable, and not stark and harsh, and the people there are so nice, and gave me coffee, etc. and yes, the kitty is very sweet and not intrusive. (Marina's review helped me discover Mac.)

When my hair screams for help, this is where I used to go. I saw Mireya for awhile, and then Tiffani for highlights, but she's moved on (went to Louie and then who knows where), so this weekend, I went back and saw Mac. And Mac's a god. He gave me highlights in two shades: golden blonde and a little lighter. He also listened when I mentioned my concerns on length and such.

The only negative aspect  was when it came time for the bill; the price they charged me for the highlights was way above and beyond what I was quoted over the phone. Next time, I'll confirm with the stylist before taking any evasive action. But partial highlights shouldn't be evasive!

Addendum: Two days later, and my  "golden" highlights are starting to look a brassy orange. I also noticed that when I style my hair like "normal" (ie not making it all wavy and stuff like Mac did), that my bangs are way way way too long. This coupled with the bill issue really makes me think twice about returning.

Man, its about time!  I'm so tired of 'Trendy Salons' that go for the look of class, without the touch of class, and are way too cool to be bothered by the clientele.

Pitch Salon is such a refreshing blend of elements - minimalist decor, clean lighting, relaxing colors, professional stylists...it makes you want to linger before and after your cut.

Down to Earth stylists have the experience and consistency that is harder and harder to find in a salon these days, and John took the time to listen to me before offering some professional advice and giving me a great cut and style.

It is clear that the owner won't tolerate anything less than the best, but there is a relaxed feeling of welcome - I didn't feel like the place was too good for me (that's why I left the last two salons I tried), and now I can be seen enjoying an espresso at the table in front of the salon, even when I have no appointment!  It's just nice hang for a minute and watch the traffic go by, and they are always happy to see me.

Well Done!

John has been my stylist for the past four years, and I've followed him around the city to continue getting great cuts. I appreciate that he takes the time to listen to what I want, and steers me clear of choices that are wrong for me. My hair is on the long side, and very fine, and I love that he gives it shape and body -- and the style lasts!

The salon is bright, warm, and airy, tucked away between the Haight and UCSF. Very welcoming. The location is important, because it seems to be in a spot where the parking is unusually plentiful for this neighborhood --I've always found a free space on my first pass. Tea or coffee is offered while you wait -- love that!

Update: John moved on to his own place awhile ago, so I haven't been back since. Can't speak to the stylists there now.

I just had a wonderful experience at this salon. After finding out about Dealan at Pitch from a woman who sat down with her fantastic hair in front of me at a Giants game, I made an appointment. There's a parking lot right behind the salon so finding a space wasn't a problem (FYI it's a pay lot). I explained what I was looking for, and how much time I'm comfortable spending on my hair, and Dealan gave me a cut I adore at a price I could afford, and he's got a sweet personality to go with all that clipping skill. Bonus: Shop cat. I LOVE ME SOME PITCH! Couldn't be happier.

I have finally found a stylist at a salon that I want to get my haircut at.  I highly recommend Dealon.  He's funny and nice and gave me a haircut I get compliments on.  The salon's days/hours are very convenient and the salon itself is stylish without being pretentious. I was so satisfied with my haircut that I signed on to be a first-time reviewer to let others know about Dealon and the salon.

Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience at this salon. I wanted highlights (my appointment was for highlights), but I left with a lifeless all-over strawberry blonde. I don't think the stylist wanted to give me highlights, and she kept telling me that I ought to have all-over color.(I am a blonde with highlights, and I know my hair looks good). Perhaps highlights are difficult, or they take too much time, but she wouldn't do them, hence the strawberry blonde.  I returned to have the color "fixed" and after 6 hours at the salon, I had a very yellow hair color (a bottle of Loreal would have given me a better color).  As I was leaving, the owner wanted to charge me for the new color (he offered to subtract the price of an all-over color, but I would have to pay for the highlights, base color to cover the old color -- I had already paid close to $200 at my previous appointment). Be aware that the salon has a questionable policy for "unhappy" customers and the hair stylists don't appear to listen to what their clients would like.

As some might have seen on the Talk boards yesterday, I was on the hunt for a good, affordable salon in the city that was open on Sundays. My boyfriend had decided to finally get an actual hairstyle, which also included cutting off over six inches of his hair. He usually prefers to have his hair long, but it was time for a change - having just moved to SF from NYC less than six months ago.  After searching Yelp, Pitch was one of the places that I found and they even opened up earlier than all the others. So, around 10.30am yesterday, my boyfriend called and got an appointment at noon. Having walked by the salon before, we knew just where it was. Since we had other errands to run in the neighborhood, it worked out perfectly.

Getting there early, as we usually do, we got a chance to meet the salon cat - such a sweetie! She must be part Maine Coon, considering her fuzziness and the hair in between her toes (just like our cat). Though she is not much for being held, she loves to explore and sit on people's laps (under her own choice, of course). After being there for a few minutes, the stylist, Lisa arrived and was a true talent. We brought in a picture of what he wanted done and she was eager to do it. Following the picture (albeit a crappy picture), she did a perfect job with the layers and my man is quite stylish now. Though not mentioned on their website, you get a 10% discount on a haircut if you never never been there before, so it is worth trying it out. The owner was there as well and he was a sweet guy to talk to. This place truly deserves its five stars for the great experience we both had there. Needless to say, my boyfriend has finally found a hair stylist in SF - woot!

I am normally VERY picky about my hair and 8 out of 10 times I'm unhappy when I walk out of a salon.

I recently went to Pitch and had my hair cut by Mac - I was 100% happy with the results.  He gave me a great cut that's easy to style.

I will definitely go back again!!

Dealan rocks! This is a great place for anyone who just wants a great hair cut. No frills, no gimmicks. Just appropriate prices, relaxing atmosphere and talented stylists.

Having just moved to SF I was looking to find a replacement for my stylist, whom I'd left behind in Los Gatos. I found Pitch on Yelp, read the reviews and was convinced this would be my new spot....Feeling conflicted about what I actually received has lead me to give this salon 2 stars, and here's why:

Pro's:
- Very accommodating; I was able to make an appointment at my desired time/date
-Employees were very sweet
-My stylist was very attentive to my wants
-The color turned out looking good after a few washes

Con's:
-My appointment took over 3 hours...
-The cut was so horrible that I actually had to cut it myself at home (this was a short haircut so you could def. see that one side was a good 2 inches longer than the other)
-I brought in a picture of what I wanted, but what I got was not even CLOSE
-My color faded in about a month
-For what I got and the amount of time I spent to get it, it was def. not worth what I spent

Unfortunately, I will not be returning...the search goes on.
