My roommate is from Charleston, SC, and believed that Pita Pit only existed there - when we discovered different, we knew we had to go.
I absolutely love non-big-chain fast food restaurants like this one. The ingredients are fresh, it's fairly inexpensive, and there are interesting flavor combinations. The service is just as fast as Subway, but the food is way, way, better.
The gyro I had was fine, but not life changing. The falafel, though, is really good, as is the chicken caesar pita. Their baba ghanouj is pretty great, too.
All in all, pretty rockin.
Oh Pita Pit, please forgive me. My original posting was about one sentence long and didn't do you justice. What can I say...I was a rookie Yelper. Allow me to gush a little.
I love this place. It might be my favorite quick-bite eatery in my neighborhood and I really didn't take advantage of it enough. I'm getting a little nostalgic now that I'm moving 2 miles away (which is like a different world in the city of Chicago).
The staff is always really nice which is surprising considering they are mostly college students. The food is always fresh and they are totally patient as I peruse the ingredients and get very giddy as I describe the creation I want made. Everything is tucked into a delicious pita and the mess is so minimal.
All this on top of being able to get a full meal, including chips and a drink, for under $10....just do it already.

I love Pita Pit. Its a great place to go in and sit and order your food while they make it front of you and their online ordering is a piece of cake as well. I have never had a bad pita sandwich and always enjoy what I get. Delivery is always fast and they are open really late!
Healthy, fast, good portions, and tasty. Employees were friendly, and the falafel wheat pita was excellent. They are big, the size of a burrito. All the toppings are no extra charge, such as tzatziki, hummus, green peppers, and even pineapple, which I thought was odd but tasted great. It is a set-up like Subway, but it was totally better and had more toppings. The falafel did not taste old or stale, it was very good. I will come again, I will agree with others that it would be great if it were a little better of value or had a combo deal.
I've only ever had the falafel pita, so I can't vouch for other options, but I've always been satisfied. They pitas are huge, the toppings are always very fresh (much better than the subway variety).
The staff is friendly, the service is quick and the place is clean.
My only complaint is that they are expensive! 10 bucks for 1 pita and a bottle of water.
The people in there are usually nice. And they have a clever tip jar quote that reads "Pita is 'a tip' spelled backwards."
Everything else; the price, the quality of food (pre-cut gyros meat, defrosted falafel, shredded iceberg lettuce, chalky-feta cheese), the rock hard cookies, the obnoxious decor, and the uncomfortable seating can suck it.
On the positive side, this is a clean, well-run establishment with very good service. It's organized much like a Subway restaurant, with all toppings added right in front of you, so you see exactly what you're getting. As far as I can tell, all the ingredients are very fresh, and the prices are certainly reasonable.
But...the food is just mediocre. My falafel was grilled (presumably after having been fried long ago) and was extremely dry as a result. My friend's chicken pita was somewhat better, but hardly anything special.
Really, the entire operation and the quality of the food reminds me of Subway, but with pita bread instead of regular bread. I'd rather go to Thai Bowl or Allende, both of which are right next door...or even Subway, which is just beyond that.
After rubbing too many elbows at the Spread up the street, we came in for some late-night noshing... the Pita Pit is open 'till 4 am on Sat.!
For $8 and some change, I was the ecstatic recipient of a made-to-order gyro pita and a tall drink of water. Ahem, make that Diet Coke ;) No extra charge for feta, Tzatziki and even hummus! Though the gyro wasn't as tasty as its Greektown counterparts, it still hit the spot. I imagine some of its less robust flavor could be attributed to a healthier preparation style, which is A-OK by me.
My friend had the chicken souvlaki pita which she loved. Mental bookmark: the chicken souvlaki is the way to go next time. The Pita Pit also wraps basic pita fillings such as turkey, ham, chicken and roast beef... they'll heat up the meat if you prefer, too.
Good fountain Diet Coke, and seats along the window for Lincoln/Fullerton/Halsted drunk surveyin'. Fun times.
4 stars cuz the stuff I get here tastes good, not too much to it.
I like their buffalo chicken pita, plus you can add whatever you want.
I think the stuff is actually a bit over priced for being what it is, maybe they should knock it down to Subway-like prices...that would be nice.
They roll the pitas well and they are big.
Wow, Pita Pit, weren't you a surprise.
I came here with a few friends to grab a weekend snack/dinner, with not much to expect. After all, we had to strategically enter this place, Frogger-style, dodging drunks, younger drunks, and drunks who shouldn't have been able to slur after having lost a good amount of frontal cortex functions.
I decided to go light and order one of the "5 under 500": the light chicken caesar pita. I wasn't really hungry but after my first bite, I wolfed down the whole thing because it hit the spot with a good combination of vegetables, chicken strips and caesar dressing, wrapped up in a convenient wheat pita that I could have taken to go and eaten while walking down the street.
Wait a minute though, did I say I ordered from the healthy menu? the "5 under 500 menu? Upon further inquiry, you mean to tell me that my pita ensemble was 470 CALORIES! And everything outside of that five item menu is more than 500 calories!
Yeesh...FATTY! But I'll probably come back sometime when I'm not planning to eat much during a day and preferably during the daytime.
I've loved pita pit since my college days at Michigan State.
Always consistent, always good, semi-healthy. The pitas are good sized and you don't feel too bad after eating one. I always get the turkey. It was my stand by dinner in college if nothing else sounded good, and it still is. I love pita pit if not only for the food - but for the fact that they always seem to be open!
PI-TAstic! I really like this place whether it's for a late night fix or a quick bite.
I've always felt the food here (well veggies, I can't comment on the meat) were fresh. I also like that there are so many choices.
The only negative experience I had was with delivery. I was too sick to go there & starving, I called when I realized it had been almost an hour. They apologized for the delay & gave me a coupon for a free pita.
For a tasty alternative to Subway this is your place.
Not bad, good to know they're open late. It's hard to find anything halfway healthy open late. Also good to know: they have wheat pitas as an option.
I ordered the falafel. i don't know if it was my cold keeping me from tasting everything or if the sandwich was on the bland side but I'd say it was only ok. I do think the service was great. Having a cold I'm a bit in the clouds and the guy that took my order was really nice about it. Thanks guy!
If I found myself ravenously hungry at the corner of Lincoln & Fullerton at lunchtime, I would most likely choose the Pita Pit over the McDonald's next door or the terrible Mexican joint across the street. Although please understand, that's not saying much.
Admittedly, my friend & I both thought our pita wraps were tasty; she had hummus, I had chicken schwerma. But it seemed like they didn't load them up enough to justify the price; it was nearly $9 for a wrap (about the size of a wheat-beer glass) & a soda. Or maybe I just needed to add more stuff, I don't know. For a fast food place though, and for not getting a side, it wasn't as cheap as I expected.
Service was adequate in that the guys behind the counter didn't, like, make the wrong thing for us, but they seemed kind of thick-headed. I must have told them what I had ordered three times, and we were the only people being serviced at the time.
The dining area was clean but tiny; they have maybe three little tables so this is definitely a take-out place. I'm not even considering the atmosphere in my review.
I was toying with numbers in my review, thinking three stars seems a little high for a place that doesn't seem to try any harder than it does. But the web site is very good, and you can build your own pita & check out nutrition info for it -- seeing how adding mayo will affect it, for example. That's a great little feature, so I'll stick with 3.
Quality / Taste (50%): 4
Service (20%): 2
Value (30%): 2
Overall: 3
Definitely blows its neighbor Subway out of the water. I enjoy telling the worker how to make my pita, since I'm a picky one. I ALWAYS have my mushrooms fried with my meat (they used to ask you when they opened if you'd like that, now it's a secret). Their turkey is yummy (comes with a lot of meat) and I can get all the sprouts I want. Healthy meal, large stuffed pita, good prices, I can't complain!
OK maybe I can. The workers USED to (PAST TENSE) smoke pot in the back of the store and you could smell it. I always wondered why they were so happy to be at work... But now since the health check came through, new managers and change in staff. Phew!
LOVE Pita Pit! I love their sandwiches because they're different than subway and Jimmy Johns. That and they have WAY more options.
I always get the turkey... I should try other things, I know. But it's sooo good. They heat up the turkey and then add whatever toppings you want. Yum. Everyone should definitely try Pita Pit. It's fantastic.

I got used to eating Pita Pit in Saskatoon, SK, Canada and I was thrilled to see that one opened up in Chicago. I was practically squealing when I saw it!
Full of healthy and vegetarian choices this is really a great place to just stop by, grab a pita and go! I do think since this is a new restaurant the workers could have been a bit more skilled at putting the pitas together! But it has a lot of potential.
After reading all the glowing reports about the Pita Pit I decided to drop by today to see what all the Yelping was about.
I ordered....baba ghannaouj, pinneaple, sprouts and lettuce. However, what I actually got was a meager portion of bg spread on the flat side of my pita layered with an overabundance (an understatement!) of pineapple cubes, sprouts and romaine lettuce to make it look hefty. When I bit into it, all I tasted were the filler's, especially the pineapple pieces. But the biggest disappointment was the bg turned out to be pretty tasteless and bland. Completely different than what they serve in a Middle Eastern restaurant ....
The best part though... I only spent $5.23 (tax incl.) on the entire meal. Good thing I didn't order any of the sides, because it would've definitely set me back $8 and some change.
Next time I'll go next store and eat a Subway, at least it will be a 'real' sandwich and I'll be able to eat fresh like Jared!
Every time I go here, it is GOOD. Always quick and fresh, and TASTY. I kind of wish this place was a bit more "everywhere".
The price is on par with that of Chipotle.
Don't bother with the Subway or the McDonald's it is sandwiched between. Pun intended.
My college friends and I usually salivate when we think of this place. We became VERY acquainted with this place down at glorious UIUC, and although it's not quite the same here (the Chambana Pita Pit dude knew me by name), it takes a pretty close second.
If you couldn't guess by the name, this place serves pitas - all made to order. My favorite concoction is the Chicken Caesar Pita. Make sure you ask for croutons instead of the bacon - it's just better that way.
If you're a health freak, you can go the route of sprouts and such, but this place better serves as a 'I'm drunk and I wanna fill my belly' joint. And the fatty stuff tastes better anyway.
I agree that this is a good alternative in the area when you're looking for something healthy, however the selection is disappointing and the dining area itself always seems cold and crowded. Get it to go. I thought the portion was just right for a light to moderate lunch.
Check out the menu to the left of the cashier, which has some more complex options not on the menus above the counter and explains the difference between hummus, falafel and baba ganoush.
PS: If you're interested in a truly kickass pita experience, I highly recommend Pita Pete's in Evanston.
All I have ever had here are salads - they have about 4 or 5 choices: Greek (my fave), Ceaser, Chicken, Garden.
Always fresh ingredients, including iceburg, romaine, and spinach as your base.
Nice folks behind the counter, too!
Nice alternative to the Subway next door, who never have spinach anymore...
Love this place! It's a little pricey for what it is but they're open late and the food is delicious. I just wish they had more toppings and had a meal combo for a pita and a drink and chips.
I did my undergrad at UofI, so I was familiar with Pita Pit and knew what to expect, and have not been disappointed. It's tasty comfort food, reasonably priced, that's a short walk from class, making it wonderful for lunch during an 8hr block of classes.
If you like Subway, this is better. Much better. However, of the various locations of this college chain I have been to, this one has the least amount of in-store seating. Pitas make great to-go foods, though.
Wow, I actually never knew this franchise existed. I usually expect to eat greasy food at a Gyro's type joint, but they have a healthy slant to things.
Imagine the Subway restaurant of the Gyro world. The toppings are pretty much the same as Subway, but I stuck with the greek stuff (feta, tsaziki (sp?)). The pitas are very portable also so it won't be messy as well.
I got the gyros pita and instead of slicing it off a big column of meat, the guy just grilled individual slices. I bet not as fresh, but surprisingly healthier tasting.
A good quick meal to mix up your weekly lunch selections.
I've stopped in here for lunch and for after bar food and the pitas are always good. makes you feel better than going to McD because at least the toppings are really fresh and you have your choice of what you want on your pita. It is a little overpriced for what it is but i can't complain too much because it's always good and their always friendly.
Pretty good pita place, as far as fast food pita places go. If you really want to enjoy a really good pita, there are gourmet mediterranean restaurants around the city to indulge in besides this place. But for it's purposes of grabbing something fast and healthy, it's certainly a better choice than the neighboring McDonald's.
Good food, fresh veggies, good service, clean, neat, and fast. A decent 4-star place!
its a subway in disguise.
don't let it fool you.
I really like this place. Seriously. I've only been here 4 times and have enjoyed it every time. I try to make efforts to come over here but since I live on the West Side it isn't very often. I can see it, however, becoming boring and tiresome if I were to frequent it more often. I just love all the toppings they have and the fact that you can pick and choose ala Subway style, but on a pita instead!
All the hot meats too are cooked on the grill, making it fresh, as are the toppings, fresh. I like the way I can get a falafel with pepperoncinis and cheddar cheese unlike other places where the falafel comes standard. This weekend I got a Dagwood (turkey, ham and roast beef I believe) with bacon, it was incredible! Add to that the assorted toppings I love and it made it very good.
And sure if can be healthy, unless you start loading a bunch of non-healthy toppings, which is easy since they are in front of you. It is just a great alternative to other fast foods that are available and I wish there were more of them especially closer to where I live and work.
This place is absolutely disgusting. I had their falafel pita sandwich, in which the falafels themselves weren't fresh, flavorless, balls of dry un-moist globs shoved in an unfresh pita bread. The bread itself was cold, maybe expired, and it was not foldable in which it kept all the ingredients in. I believe the yogurt sauce was the only good part of the sandwich, since it was tangy and creamy. I cannot stress enough how disgusting this place is, and how awful the food they serve you. It may be cheap eats for DePaul students, but if you're desperate for Mediterranean food, go find a Pita Inn. It will be well worth it, and you won't be trying to gag yourself afterwards. I guarantee it.
I roll in to Pita Pit all sweaty from working out about 3 times a week. There has not been a single time yet that the staff has not taken the time to have a nice little conversation or make a suggestion of what they think I may like next time. Even when they are busy they will give you tasters of certain foods you are curious about.
The price is excellent and I have never had a bad pita, you get to pick everything so its pretty much all on you!
I think this place is in almost every college town.. except for mine, cuz the town I was stuck in for 3 years was a hell hole that was a decade behind everybody else. I judge a book by it's cover, ALWAYS so I never went when a Pita Pit was around. I was raised a snob, I'm sorry. So when I heard we were going to Pita Pit, I CRINGED. The whole way there I was thinking, God damnit! Not again, I have to be subjected to shitty ass food today? I was really looking forward to eating! I've never found pita's appetizing and all I could picture was a lot of lettuce, I hate lettuce, there's no nutritional value anyway! I think it just reminds me of how my last roommate made her pitas...no matter how much lettuce you eat, it ain't makin you skinny, honey. We went and I ordered the gyro. They grill the meat so it's warm and was filled with a lot of meat to my surprise. It was actually really good and satisfying. They make it any way you want it so you get to choose exactly what's in it, you get to witness this btw, and what kinda sauce you want. Also it doesn't really resemble a pita from what I remember, mine kinda came rolled up. These things are really filling. Service was fast and friendly, we ordered ours to go.
I was really proven wrong so I'm going to have to stop by the portland location. Pita Pit made a fan out of me.
Good alternative to the McDonalds next door and other fast-food joints in the area.
I got myself the chicken caesar pita and a pita filled with hummus and it served as a great meal. The Caesar was fresh, I got to pick the toppings (just like Subway) and the staff was friendly. The hummus pita was only a couple bucks and the server slathered on the hummus nice and thick. :) Hummus taste was average, not too much garlic but I would have liked a little more zing.
I didn't wait more than 2 minutes for them to make the food and let me be on my way. For a quick alternative to the usuals, this is definitely worth it.
The manager also told me the place doesn't really fill up until late-night. That's because they don't close until 4AM Thursday-Saturday.
I love Pita Pit. A little pricey vs. other area pita places, but worth every penny. The owners are super nice and that's another plus. I really enjoy their falafel whole wheat pita with a dash of feta, spinach, sprouts, cucumbers, green peppers and a zap of honey mustard. Perfect lunch without too much heartburn.
I love the Pita Pit! It fits in well with the rest of the restaurants in the area, as it is right next to DePaul University. It's just a quick sandwich shop- well, in this case pita shop- and I think it is quite tasty. I don't know why some people said that it isn't fresh- they cook the meat right in front of you and the veggie selection is great. I always get chicken teriyaki- you can create just about anything your heart desires though.
LIKEY! Good food, nice service every time I come in. Good late nite alternative to burritos, cheese fries, and hot pockets.
the turkey pita with all the fresh toppings totally hit the spot after a night out. the pitas are huge. friendly staff and fast service.
I remember this place from back in college in Michigan. Fresh Pitas anyway you want 'em made pretty quickly. My favorite is the chicken caesar. They cook the chicken and bacon nice and warm, and the Caesar dressing is realllllly tasty. The delivery guy is a little scary, so if you're home alone, just say "I'll get it John!" really loudly before you answer the door.
I came in hoping for something nice in a pita and ordered some falafel. This turned out to be a mistake. The falafel was made on a grill from what appeared to be ready-made, pre-cooked falafel balls. When I was asked what I wanted it on it, I replied 'the stuff that usually goes on falafel.' The guy behind the counter didn't know so I just asked for the basics, which even then was lacking since they didn't really have hummus or tahini, just Greek Gyros sauce. I guess it might have been better had I ordered gyros, but I didn't and the falafel I had there was awful.
This place holds the record for Chicago's least appetizing restaurant name, narrowly edging out Taco Hole, Pizza Cavern, and Hoagie Crevasse.
