7 reviews for Pirate's Cove Childrens Theme Park
As a park district facility, this gets a 5-star; but there are a lot of places out there that are exceptional and on a much larger scale.
Anyway, great facility. Too packed sometimes, to the point, you can't get a chair, which stinks.
I also wish they would let the lazy river stay lazy. They have all these sprinklers nailing you when you're trying to relax. Turn them off!

Pirate's Cove Children's Theme Park is truly an experience.
I am originally from the Northwest suburbs and never even knew about it. I suppose it is because I was much too old to go when it first opened 25 years ago.
The park is located directly across from the Alexian Brothers Medical Center. It is run by the local Elk Grove Park District. My husband and I could not get over this fact, and also believe without a doubt that places like this could not exist in the city of Chicago. Here I felt relatively safe leaving my belongings in my sister's double stroller. The park is clean, well supervised and incredibly safe.
I have to agree with one reviewer that this park is more suitable for those under the age of 6. I think that many of the attractions other than the rock climbing wall would quickly bore anyone older.
Some of their rides and attractions:
The Castle of Camelot-
Apparently this was recently renovated. It features a soft play ground with tunnels, slides and other jongle gym related equipment. At the entrance there is a slide made to look like a dragon.
The Pirate Plunge -
This was alot of fun. Parents can ride with their kids or race against them. Three can ride at a time and you basically ride on a black carpet for speed.
Safari Express -
This is a really cute train that goes underneath a cave. Inside of the cave is filled with large stuffed animals set in a safari like setting. Parents can ride too!
The Smugglers Crag-
Pirate's Coves 20-foot high climbing wall. The wall is designed with different skill levels in mind. They recommend that children be at least 4 years old.
The Eureka Train Ride-
Kids must manually turn the pedals to travel around the train track. It takes you through a dark tunnel, and past the old Eureka Mine.
Paddle Boats-
This was one of our favorite rides, for kids that is. The paddle boats are set in a 1 foot deep pond. Kids can navigate on their own, but there are also 2 workers in the water that can help and navigate and insure that your kids are safe.
Kiddie Carousel-
This is a newly restored 1950's Herschell Kiddie Carousel. It is really cool and features 22 hand painted ponies.
18th Century Pirate Ship-
You can picnic on top or enter the galley to work on art projects.
Jolly Roger Jump Moon Bounce-
Who doesn't like a moon bounce?
This park allows you to bring your own food and concessions, but they also have a small stand where you can purchase drinks, ice cream, chips, candy, pizza, and hot dogs.
They have a small gift shop near the admission stands of little pirate themed trinkets.
Adults are free here and children's admission is now $7 for residents and $9 for non residents. They also offer a season pass for individuals or families. The lines are minimal, definitely a great place to take your younger kids.

Pirate's Cove Children Theme Park was built over 25 years ago to stimulate and encourage the creative exploration and imagination of children between the ages of two and nine. I think it's more for kids betweem the ages two and six. The older kids were pretty much running around unsupervised. A group of them tried to cut into line while we were waiting for the paddle boats.
The rides include a Pirate Plunge (giant fun slide), the Safari Express (a train ride through the Safari that parents can ride too) The Smugglers Crag (Pirate's Coves 20-foot high climbing wall), the Eureka Train Ride (a train ride through a dark tunnel, and past the old Eureka Mine), Paddle Boats, a newly restored 1950's Herschell Kiddie Carousel, an authentic 18th Century Pirate Ship, and the Jolly Roger Jump Moon Bounce.
The cove is open for the season starting in June through mid-August, Monday thru Saturday and then on select Saturdays until September. Daily admission for residents is $7, non-residents $9 and adults are always free. Theme Park Season Passes are available for sale at the Pavilion for residents and nonresidents starting May 1st and they also offer a combo pass for Pirates' Cove Children Theme Park and the Pavilion Aquatic Center, but that's a different review for another day.
You can also have your child's Birthday Party here. Rentals are available Monday through Thursday afternoons, Saturday afternoons, or Friday and Saturday evenings. They also rent out the place for private parties accommodating up to 850 guests in case you know someone who has a pirate wedding theme in mind.
All in all, I liked it but having to protect my two year old from being run over by the older kids was a downer. I'd go back but I'd do it as early as possible so I can avoid the crowd.

Great little amusement park for the preschool set. Although billed as being for kids from 2 - 9, it's really best for kids btwn. 3 and 6 years old.
It's a facility of the Elk Grove Park District and runs June through August. Although there is a pirate ship (where the top level has a small patio area), there's not much else to do that's pirate-related. There's a 20-ft. high crag climbing wall (for older kids), a pond with kid-powered paddle boats, a playground area with big dragon slide (again - best for those 4 & up), and a fast carousel (no adults can ride, and no seatbelts).
Good for toddlers: safari train that parents can also ride on, and the hand-propelled trains (park staff helps push when kids can't propel themselves). Both trains have seatbelts. My 2 year old loved both.
Every Friday there is a special event. On 6/29, it was Wizard Fest: a magic show in the morning (geared to 5-6-7 year olds), and a chance for kids to make their own magic potion to bring home.
Admission: $8/non-resident, $6/resident. Adults are always free! Open M-F/ 11-4. Sat. 10-4. Closed Sunday.

Nice place to take your children to. They will love it! There are so many rides for the children and even adults. The park is pretty big for the suburbs. A great place for people who live nearby!

This place is EXELLENT!! It's so popular, you have to book 6-12 month in advance for a B-Day party! Not having booked enough in advance, we went after lunch/cake at a nearby resturant and the kids were in HEAVEN!! It's very cheap, you only have to pay for the kids going, and the activities and grounds are in excellent shape with tons of things for the kids to do. My 5 year old son along with the remaining 15 kids (girls & boys of all ages) all had such a great time, highly reccomend it!! Also, the management there is just awesome, the manager gave me a great group discount and even kept the park open an additional 15 minutes for us!
