$25.50 (plus tip) for two pints, two shots of Jack, and a very generous pour of a (kind of mediocre) Malbec. Pretty good deal! I haven't tried any of their food, but their menu looks nice, and I'm intrigued to try what they have to offer. They also had a nice happy hour (5-7pm) menu that had a good mix of bar food.
The lounge is clean, bright, and not your typical danky, stinky dive. Mood lighting came down around 10pm, but it was still bright enough to be able to read a menu, and it wasn't loud. Conversations could be held! Lots of big flat screens for watching, and the bartender was very nice and helpful. This was my first time, and I only stayed about an hour and a half before taking my boyfriend to the airport, but we agreed this is somewhere we're going to make time to come patronize again.
I think this will be a fun place to come watch Monday night football, or just to avoid the run-of-the-bill bars that are on every other street corner. -

So, it's mostly just hotel bars at the airport end of Spenard, and having tried them all, because it's good to know what's within stumbling distance of home, Piper's is definitely the best (cheaper than the Fancy Moose at the Millennium, better lit than The Crave at the Quality Inn.) I give them 5 stars on this basis--far and away the best bar in the area. The bartenders are super friendly, half off appetizers during happy hour, prize giveaways during Monday night football, decent beer and wine selection (Kassik's Morning Wood on draft!), the list of perks goes on and on. Vegetarian options on the menu are a plus, and the nachos are pretty amazing, worth the money even when they're not half off for happy hour. On top of that, they're actually open til 2 am, unlike the other hotel bars in the area. We even opted to spend New Years Eve here rather than dealing with the craziness of downtown, and the lovely ladies of Piper's didn't disappoint.

Imagine my delight at finding a restaurant in Anchorage that not only serves veggie burgers, they do it on whole wheat. To top that all off, you can get your veggie burger with red potatoes on the side instead of french fries. Served with some of the best brew choices around, and this restaurant is a winner, especially considering its location. I would definitely dine here again, and will point all my friends visiting Anchorage to do the same.

I feel like two stars is a little harsh ... I ate at Piper's last night and did eat MOST of the food I ordered. So it's definitely edible but it's far from great food.
I ordered a turkey cranberry salad to start and the turkey was diced and appeared to have come from a can! (either that or a frozen dinner.) The lettuce was ice berg and it included carrots. It was obvious that the lettuce had come from those pre-packaged salad packs. Paying $8 for a starter salad that I could have just bought myself at the grocery store for $3 isn't my idea of a good meal. The fact is, this "restaurant" is attached to the hotel where I'm staying for a convention. It's the only reason I would have eaten here at all.
My co-worker ate the halibut fish n' chips and enjoyed it, but the mashed potatoes that came as a side dish were clearly the powdered/packaged kind. Again - it'd be cheaper to just buy that at the store and make it myself! Such a disappointment.
To their credit though, Piper's servers were attentive and polite. Our order was taken promptly and the food came out in less than 15 minutes. The decor of the restaurant isn't fancy but there are some big, cozy booths to sit in.
The experience overall was quite mediocre but if I stayed at this hotel again in the future, I might just eat here again out of convenience. -

The four stars is food the drinks and the ambiance and not for the food. Take one look at the menu and you'll know this is NOT the kind of place you go for food. But if you want friendly service, a basket of hot popcorn, good company and a deck of cards, then Piper's is a good place to hang out. The bar is EXTREMELY well stocked- I like all kinds of weird stuff and they had it all. Awesome! The ambiance is very warm, homey and Alaska-y. Try a warm Peppermint Patty to get all nice and toasty on those cold Alaska nights.

Hotel bar but gets two *s for having a nice patio even if the music is blaring. They do have a nice size menu.
