This is going to be first in my list of plumbers that we dealt with this last week during a huge fiasco involving no hot water and varying estimates ranging from 0 to $900+ to get it back.

Edgar from Pipe Arts is top notch. When he pulled a blackberry out of his shirt pocket instead of a battered notepad, I knew we were in good hands.

Not only did he come out same day when I explained the situation, but he showed up with a very professional truck and assistant. They wore gloves while taking apart the burner assembly from my water heater, kept their workspace neat, and even created a tool to assist in the TLC our water heater needed.
His detective work extended to CLIMBING ONTO THE ROOF to investigate the exhaust pipe- which he discovered was incorrectly capped (not a surprise) and it was not providing proper suction to remove all that pesky CO2 from our house. (!!!)
I have the parts ordered with expedited delivery and our hot water is working for now, and we can't wait to have Edgar and his team back this week to complete the repair.

They also took the extra time to fix a botched job in our shower that was causing a very annoying and wasteful drip....drip....drip. Looking at his website and pictures I can solidly say that our needs were probably a little less fancy than what he usually handles, but it didn't seem to be an issue. I'd love to have him do some fancier work in our bathroom later this year.

In any case, this whole situation was a nightmare and we were so relieved when we got such straight answers and solutions from him. Being home repair newbs, it's so relieving to have someone like Edgar on your side. Worth every penny. And we got to pay with our Amex using PayPal!!

And of topic, but dude, Edgar is cuuute. I'm just sayin'.

My wife and I are in the middle of a kitchen and laundry room remodel.  Our water heater stopped working a few days ago when we had to move it outside to get new flooring installed, and then back again later.  Our contractor George Takash took a look, got on the horn with American Water Heater Company and got them to send a new Thermal Coupling Unit out to us.  Days and much frustration went by waiting for the part to arrive in the mail, only to find that replacing that part didn't solve the problem.

That's when we spied Edgar and his Pipe Arts Plumbing truck across the street, working on another job.  Edgar was nice enough to come over without an appointment once that job was done.  He assessed our situation and came to a diagnosis and cost estimate quickly:  we needed a new control module.

Edgar saved us even more time without hot water by offering to install the control module he had with him in his van.  We will get a replacement control module from American Water Heater (our water heater is under warranty still) and give that to Edgar when it arrives.

Once the go-ahead was given, Edgar did a quick and expert job, checked his work, and was done.   The whole experience was wonderful.  Thanks for your help, Edgar!

I first met Edgar in 2004, the day after I moved into my house in Oakland. The first night in my new house I could smell something bad, and I started calling around for plumbers the next morning. Edgar showed up in his immaculate disposal jumpsuit with an equally immaculate van, and 2 hours later, he had found and repaired the problem -- a sloppy joint that had been cut a little short and had slipped loose behind a bathroom wall. He didn't just fix the leak, he cleaned up the mess. What a pro!

So of course I called Edgar when I started my kitchen remodel. He did a most fabulous job and always left my house cleaner than he found it. His bid was reasonable, he showed up every time on time, and even came a couple of times when my other subcontractors needed help to get everything installed. The perfect plumber.

In the years since, he's done some other major plumbing art work in my home, including installing new Toto toilets (yay!) and replacing the pump in the sewer exhaust tank (major major headache).  I can't say enough good things about Edgar and crew! He's a total plumbing rock star!

Re-worked my antique toilet and installed a new clawfoot tub.  He's as cute as he is skilled.  Excellent.

Wow! I am so impressed and would recommend this company in a heartbeat. I thought I had a drainage problem that turned out to be an appliance issue and not a plumbing issue, but Edgar took the time to make sure nothing was wrong and then didn't even charge me!! Not to mention I priced estimates against other highly-ranked places on Yelp and his estimate was the lowest. I will gladly call back next time I have an (actual) plumbing problem.

Edgar Amaya has done a few jobs at my place, from a sink installation that was botched by another "plumber", to a water line to my icemaker while he was doing that job, to a hot water heater replacement.  Edgar is trustworthy, on-time, and his prices are fair.  I wish good plumbers were cheaper, but take it from me - if you cheap out on the first job, you'll regret it later.

I found out about Edgar from a plumbing supply place in Berkeley on San Pablo (can't recall the name offhand) when I was asking for help finding a part for my made-in-Oakland bathroom sink part from http://www.sunrisespec... .  I needed help fixing the initial botched installation too, and Edgar did the job right.

And like all good plumbers, he's got a sense of humor. ;-)

UPDATE

We just had Edgar do another tough job for us: he installed a tankless hot water heater.

As usual, the work was impeccable -- now I know why he calls his business "Pipe Arts," as he truly makes plumbing an art form.

Edgar came up with creative solutions that made this job cost HALF of what a competing plumber quoted us and spared us the hassle of running a new gas line, digging up the driveway, and lots of other messy stuff.  Moreover, before he did the work, we sent him a host of emails with lots and lots of questions.  Edgar wrote back to us quickly (we heart contractors who use email so frickin' much), offering thorough answers to our many questions.

As a plus, Edgar really knows the world of tankless water heaters.  He knew about different models and was able to make recommendations based on our usage and where it was going to be placed.  Just took the "maiden voyage" shower and it was plenty hot with nice strong water pressure.

Edgar is honest, trustworthy, and reliable -- traits that aren't always easy to find in a contractor.  We consider ourselves lucky and are happy to recommend him to family, friends, and the yelp community.

Edgar did a wonderful job on a fairly complicated job in our home.  He did all the plumbing to relocate the washer/dryer from our tiny kitchen to an upstairs closet.  He was reliable, neat, and professional.

First, the work: Edgar is as meticulous as the other reviewers noted.  He definitely knows what he is doing in the world of plumbing.  Without blue prints (or x-ray) vision to tell him precisely where pipes and drain lines were, his intuition was excellent.  And when he encountered unexpected obstacles, he worked around them without a problem.  Moreover, he left our place cleaner than he found it!

Second, the rest: Edgar is definitely very professional.  This was an expensive endeavor for us, and as such, we shopped around quite a bit for plumbers.  Edgar came out two separate times to talk through various options that we were considering in terms of where to put the washer/dryer.  In the end, we stuck with our original plan, but we definitely appreciated Edgar not griping about coming out twice to give us estimates.  But when it came time to do the work, we did experience some confusion over scheduling.  When he "penciled us in" for two days of work the following week, we thought we were set to go and he would check back to confirm.  Turns out, we were wrong and it delayed our project by a week.  Also, on the second day of work, he said he'd be there by 9:30, but didn't arrive until 11:00.  When I asked him about it, he said that because we had given him a key he thought it wouldn't matter when he arrived.  He had a valid point, but it would have been nice to know in advance.  Given the horror stories I've heard about contractors starting jobs that they never finished, these seem like pretty minor infractions to me (and we take some responsibility for the communication gaps).

Third, price: Edgar's rates are not cheap, but as a fellow yelper pointed out: plumbing is not an area that you want to cut corners on.  This is our first time owning a place and we we felt too new at the game to risk major leaking in our walls.  Though we got less expensive bids, we went with Edgar because we felt that he would do the best job with the least headaches.  Of course, we can't know how those other plumbers would have worked out, but Edgar met and exceeded our already high expectations and we recommend his work without reservation for big, scary plumbing jobs.

We heartily recommend Pipe Arts Plumbing.  Edgar recently installed a tankless hot water heater for us,  He and his crew did a great job, finished in one day and left our house cleaner than it was when they arrived.

Edgar showed up on time to bid the work, arrived when he said he would to start the work and completed it for exactly the price he quoted.  His work was beautiful (if you appreciate such things) and he's very professional and pleasant.

His pricing is competitive with other plumbers of his talent and quality, but he's not the cheapest guy in town.  I've just got to say that he's worth every penny!  We wanted a plumber to work on our old house who would put in quality work to last us another 70 years and Edgar delivered.

Edgar does top notch work at competitive prices and drives a really cool van too.  This guy's got it all.  I've called him to rescue me twice from impending disasters, and both times he's been there in a flash, done great work, and cleaned up after himself to boot.  He also restores vintage kitchen and bathroom features, I hear, but I haven't seen that work in person.  If his attention to detail in that arena matches what he does for a routine maintenance/repair job, I'm sure it'd be money well spent.  Thanks, Edgar!

Edgar and his crew are fabulous. We had a leak bust out between the meter and our house and they came out to fix it in a jiffy. I really appreciated not only the quality of their work but that they took extra measures to make the house access safe and tidy while the work was in progress (open trenches). Edgar's very kind and an all-around nice person to work with. It feels great to know we have someone reliable, highly skilled and trustworthy to have on hand for the next plumbing incident.

Edgar is just great.  I called to have him put in a new water shut off valve to our home.  Considering that I was told by others that my planter bed would have to be knocked down to access it and put in a new one, Edgar - dismissed that theory in seconds, did a great job, is very friendly and seems like a good guy too.  In just over one hour the job was complete. He is  number one plumber on my list now.

I have a vintage bathtub - not a clawfoot but still 1920s with the original plumbing. During our remodel we discovred just how badly it leaked - ugh. Our contractors wanted to replace everything and charge $3000. I thought that while I like my contractors I needed a second opinion. I've seen the Pipe Arts truck around town and thought to myself that he should be able to fix my tub's plumbing. And then I read the reviews on Yelp. So I called Edgar and he came over - he was able to fix everything in half a day. And he had to stand on a ladder one storey up to do the job.  Plus he's neat (I'm sure that he's a neat person too but I mean that he picks up after himself!!). He's not a cheap plumber but he knows what he is doing, he's careful and thoughtful. I'd ask him back again!!

ok.  no one ever hires a plumber for a happy reason.  i was no exception.  i looked for 4 bids.  two guys showed up, and only one guy ever came up a written price.  surprisingly enough it was EDGAR.  i used him for a big job.  re-pipe my entire house to copper, and update it with a tankless heater.  his written bid was good ( i do this for a living).  there were some missing details, but simple email questions cleared up the unknowns.  he actually took care of a few "while your in there's", and finished up a day ahead of schedule!  when you are living with your mother-in-law in order to take a shower during construction, this is a very good thing.  i dont think he was the most economical way to go, but DAMN he is anal.  i think my system will last decades.  and if you factor that in, the price was fantastic.  he will be back in a few days, to do some other piping work.  i like him that much.  oh yea, i couldnt babysit him.  i just gave him a key and he came and went unsupervised.  i got the good vibe from him and his staff right away.
