I vaguely remember reading something about a cattle sculpture near downtown.  My husband checked it out and told me he wanted to go back some time to practice photography.  We were near downtown last Friday, so I agreed to go look at some statues of cows.  Better now than in the middle of the summer.

My first words when I saw it...this is amazing.  I've been to a World UNESCO Heritage site, temples in Bangkok, museums in Europe, and I was still impressed.  It is a lifesize replica of a cattle drive, cast in bronze.  The statues wend their way down a hill and across a stream, galloping (do cattle gallop?) along towards Young St.  There are 3 mounted cowboys in the action as well.

The sculpture work, landscaping, everything is very well executed.  It really captures the spirit of an important part of American history.

Wow, what a cool park and exhibit. I brought the pooch with me to stroll in the grass and he seemed really fond of something there! Maybe their's some funny weed growing ;-p but he just loved munching on it!

The exhibit is really something to be seen! What a spectacle of art. Dallas really is an art town and this proves it. I really enjoyed this place and walking the gravestones in the other section of the park. What history lay's there and it was peaceful to be there on a sunday. Highly recommended!

This. was. fun. and totally unexpected!

I was out on a beautiful day with my partner in crime. We didn't want to miss out on such awesome weather but we were out of ideas! Until we came around a corner in downtown. "What's that?!" I said in an annoying 4-year-old voice (no offense, children.) Apparently MF had been here before when he was a youngster. Well good for you! I wanna see!

We hopped out of the car and scurried to what to looked like a few cow statues. Boy, was I wrong. (It happens occasionally.) There were tons of them! Huge, mammoth-like statues of longhorns complete with huuuuge steers. (Thank you Mitzie for the correct terminology.) They cross a small pond, winde down a large hill and generally make you want to jump on and say "Yeehaw!" There were a few kids that were trying to do so, but it looked like more of a broken arm experience than a fun one.

We climbed up the hill to find another large statue where we took pictures like tourists. Then we walked over to the sound of running water that ended up being a small waterfall. (Check the pics: http://www.yelp.com/bi...) After taking in the scenery, we scooted over to the cemetery (review to come) where a pleasant walk was had. And by "pleasant" I mean "I-should-have-worn-my-freaking-Vans-like-I-told-m yself-in-the-morning-instead-of-my-open-toe-shoes- that-are-all-torn-up-from-wearing-them-everyday-in -New York.

    Phew.

    This place is cool.

I have lived in Dallas most of my life, and I've only been here maybe three times. I definitely need to get back. It's easy to get lost in this big maze of longhorns. It really does have the feel of a cattle drive right through the middle of Downtown Dallas.

As someone else mentioned though, during the summer months, these bronze statues get HOT, so be careful.

Pioneer Plaza is an awesome plaza to visit.  It covers 4.2 acres of downtown Dallas and is walking distance to the convention center.  The highlight of this place are the bronzed longhorn steers setting a trail down a small hillside as if on a cattle drive along with a life-like bronzed cowboys on horseback.  From what I've read it's supposedly the largest bronze monument in the world.  Well worth a trip to see and snap a few pictures of.  But please note if its hot out do not touch the cattle or you might burn yourself, not that I know from experience or anything...
