Pioneer Park
1 review for Pioneer Park
This is a spooky, great little park.
Why is it spooky? The park was laid on top of a graveyard. They knocked down the gravestones, made a few nice mini-hills, and rolled out the grass. I'm serious--read a history of the place. Graves discovered in the construction of the nearby municipal library were reburied here, so it's like an underground city of corpses down there.
Why is it great? Because it's a quiet, grassy, manicured little place with big oak trees barely removed from Castro Street. It's a great place for people who work or live around there to relax. The kind of place to go if you're in the area and looking for a park--not the kind of place to actually travel to.
The cast of characters can be fascinating too. Usually it's the typical peninsula real estate agents and software developers, but sometimes... Well, once I saw the resident bag lady of Castro Street spend several minutes directing invisible girls to be good little girls and say their prayers before bed. Then there was the scruffy looking guy (homeless-esque, though I don't know his residence status) who took what looked to be at least a pint flask of whiskey from a paper bag, broke the seal off the cap, and chugged the whole thing, letting go a loud, satisfied sigh when he finally pulled the empty bottle from his greasy, stained face. Just another couple satisfied residents of Mountain View enjoying this fine park.
