If you haven't been to Pioneer Bowl, then you haven't really experienced all the wackiness that the Southern California desert has to offer.
Like you see in all the reviews, this place is only open during certain hours during certain months of the year. Between this place and Pappy and Harriet's it is worth trying to schedule in a visit to Pie Town (as the locals call it).
Everything in here is vintage, as the kids say. I prefer to call it well preserved and freaking cool. The prices are well preserved and freaking cool as well.
Bring some friends and have some good clean fun at the bowling alley in a town built by Hollywood types as a backdrop for old Westerns. Why? If you have to ask why then you just don't get it.Listed in: Bucket List

So we were told there was this really cool, old historic bowling alley in pioneertown, which is about five miles down the road from where we were staying in joshua tree. yeehaw! i was ready to turn in my tennies for some cowboy bowling boots, throw back some light beers, and get shitty. probably bowl shitty too.
from pappy and harriet's restaurant, it was supposed to be a stones-throw away. problem was, it was pitch fucking dark out. we cruised around the back, making our way past this hillbilly style bate's motel, which was cool and creepy all at once. then, there was this stretch with absolutely no light. it was up to the stars now to guide our way. that was when we nearly stumbled over what appeared to be the goddamn crypt keeper, sitting in a chair. i fucking swear! we all screamed, ran, then laughed our asses off. i dont know who or what lurked in the darkness that night. but it was so fucking eerie.
we finally found the bowling alley, and the place was closed. oh, what a buzzkill. as we later discovered, the bowling alley is only open on weekends, for a select number of months out of the year (specifically, april thru mid november). not december...
four stars for knowing that this is probably the coolest bowling alley in california. and for scaring the shit out of us. check out there website for details:

We arrived too early to go bowling but this is only one of the reasons we will be returning for another trip. Who wouldn't want to go bowling in a truly old timey alley? It looks awesome!!
Gosh this town rocks! -

Amazing. Played a game before heading to P&H's for dinner. The lanes are old wood slats with 1950's machinery. The owner is great. Very accommodating, her kids work there too.
Beers were $2. But she had 2 or 3 of each kind of beer. Very basic. I loved it when she said, "I have 1 Newcastle 2 Bud lights, but I might not have any ice".
In the back there are retro pinball and arcade games. Some work, some don't, but who cares. The feel is amazing.
This is by far the best bowling alley I have ever been to. You still keep your own score with a pencil and confusion. How much are strikes really worth? The 10 year old tried to tell us, but we had a beer or two before we started.
There is a player piano that is sweetly out of tune, bowling shoes in a pile (fingers crossed that they have your size), and the drinks come in 1950's highball glasses.
I would have stayed here all night if I could have. This takes Ma and Pa joints to a whole new level. It deserves 6 stars really. -

This place is amazing, beautifully conserved old bowling alley, very unique indeed and the murals in the walls just brings you that old Hollywood western movies vibe, we went just to check it out since at night time seem so bright from the camping site, and the owner was there a very very nice lady, who was very attentive to whatever we needed, they have excellent floats and pizza and have a bar that sells beer only, it also had the oldest mechanized bowling alley in CA...

Finally we went and it was open and it was such a GEM, and it was empty. Kinda sad a place like this does not get more people. Amazing, amazing. The bowling alleys are not the best, but this is all original. This is the kind of place where I'd love to invite friends and hang out as we watch the sunset in Joshua Tree. We LOVED IT.
