The shop itself lacks the glitz and glamor of other bike shops, but owner, Edmund Gee is an expert at his craft. He's old school - friendly, knowledgeable and reliable.

A few months ago, I brought in my bike to have the freewheel and chain replaced.  I came in shortly before closing time on a Saturday evening, and explained that I needed the bike repaired by Monday for my work commute.  He completed the repairs by the following day and I was surprised how little he charged for the service.

Most definitely the place to take your bike for repairs.

had my tube in my stroller tire replaced, day after it was flat (after sitting my trunk).
called and the guy wouldn't give me answer about just replacing it for free.
Apparently he didn't clean out the thorns that popped it initially, also only patched, not replaced tube.
3 days later im flat again and stuck 19 blocks from home.
HOW CHINSY OF YOU, I SHOULD HAD TIPPED YOU.

Nice, knowledgeable fellow behind the counter, always the same guy.

The retail prices for parts are slightly higher than some places, but about on part with most places.  Anyway, it's worth it for the expertise.

He seems to do a lot of repairs.  I haven't had any work done here personally, but based on talking to the owner, I'd feel good trusting my baby to them.

Really nice guy. Listens to what you have to say about the type of bike you are looking for and what you will need.

Only issue is the shop is mostly for bike repairs. So not a lot of new bikes are in stock. However, they are willing to order you it if you know what you want.

I ride a bicycle because it's practical and I like it, but I don't know anything about bicycles. I can fix a flat tire, but that's about it. I'm completely at the mercy of bicycle shops when I have other problems.
I was having some problems with my brakes, so I called Pioneer and the guy there was able to take my bike and fix it the same day I called! Very nice. It wasn't expensive at all either, so I'm happy about that. What a nice and friendly place. My brakes are good as new, and if I have any other problems now I know where to go in Oakland.

Unbelievable, unparalleled service!!!

My husband, after a LOT of research (he's a little OCD) called Edmond and wanted a Diamondback Kalamar.  Edmond promptly ordered it, called us to let us know when it would be there, and got a hold of us the minute it hit his shop.

In addition, my husband didn't like the handlebar stem or seat post that it came with (because of his OCD tendencies) and Edmond took care of it immediately.  He went above and beyond by also cleaning up some adhesive residue from the factory stickers while replacing the stem and post (talk about observant...he just KNEW that this was something my husband would have been bothered by).

We had an amazing experience and would recommend Pioneer to anybody and everybody looking for a new bike.  Edmund is not only a great businessman, he is EXTREMELY knowledgeable about the bikes he carries.

Go there NOW if you need a bike.  He will help you in so many ways.  He rocks.

Joined OYJ Bike Club and was given Pioneer's name by a long time club member.

How refreshing...Edmund Gee came out from the back with a smile - just needed to have my bike checked over for the start of summer. The shop is very old school ( my entire credit card number showed on my receipt). but Edmund makes up for it.

He doesn't try to sell you anything - He just repairs bikes.

Deborah

He was very reasonalbe in price though - I would recommend this shop.

Its in Oakland 1/2 block from Piedmont AVe on Rio Vista.

Another great small (very small!) local, independent bike shop. I've only bought small parts here, but I've also gotten some good advice.

I've had the shop recommended for repairs by several bike-savvy people, but not used them myself.

Had a loose crank arm, called him in the morning, he said come by at lunch--it was fixed by 5pm, $20 (with a new crank arm), SO EASY.

Contrast this with another bike shop in the area that said it would be a week until they has time for me to bring my bike in.

I won't go anywhere else!

This place is awesome. Edmund did an excellent job tuning up my mountain bike. It runs like new now. Like others have said, I won't go anywhere else.

Edmund, the man at pioneer bikes, will make your bike hum for a SONG!  He's honest, doesn't take much of your cash, and does great work.

THAT is a combo you cannot beat!  Not a lot of flash and lycra here (ok, none) but he's worked on my fixie, my beater, and my fancypants road bike.  All with ease.

Go here, support the localist business.

Bike rack right out front!

After Edmund performed some inexpensive repairs on an old bike, I decided I wanted to give him my business when I was ready to purchase a new one.  He is quick with repairs, sometimes doing them on the spot.  One time he didn't even want to charge me, but I insisted.  That's the kind of business person I like.

So, to give him some business I ordered a new bike from him.  He has a minimal stock in his small store.  Since he didn't call me when it was supposed to arrive, I called, but he said it was not available.  So I came in and ordered a different bike, only to have the same trouble  getting one.  I guess he specializes in repairs rather than sales.

Sorry, Edmund, I wanted to give you my new bike business, but I had to go elsewhere.

This is a neighborhood bike repair shop with one guy: Edmund.  It was recommended to me by an avid cyclist turned garbage-man, and I'm very happy for the advice.  Edmund is very nice, very good and very reasonable with prices.

He has his own Penny Farthing too!

I recommend you call for his open hours.  But I wouldn't go so far as to say this is an inconvenience, considering the trade off that you get with bicycle shops that ARE open all the time - those ones always have some young, know-it-all punk trying force his opinion on you when all you want is a stupid bike-lock or something.  ... you know who I'm referring to... ahem... missing link..

Arguably the best bicycle repair shop in the East Bay. Hella inexpensive, no bike-snob employees, and superb work. Might not find what you're looking for as far as bikes themselves, BUT you might want to look here first cause if you DO happen to find something, Edmond will tell you everything you need to know. I definitely support this place!!!

The bottom bracket on my bike was sounding distinctly dodgy, so I dropped by on my way home in the hopes that I might be able to get it fixed some time next week. Edmond (I presume it was him...) got it done within three hours, even though he had other work scheduled! You can't ask for more than that.

i heart pioneer!

the owner's supercool, the repairs are decently-priced, fast, and well-done.

laid-back and perfect for anyone who can't deal with fixie snobbery- though i'm sure he treats fixies as well as he did my ghetto racer.

Great for repairs, very fair prices, very knowledgeable, very nice.  I've visited every shop in Oakland and Berkeley and if I need something done, even on a very pricey bike, this is the place to start.

Edmund the owner is a friendly and honest fellow. He fixed up two old bikes that were sitting in storage for a few years. He only fixed what really needed to be fixed to keep the project budget savvy. The final cost was very close to his estimate and quite reasonable. He took the time to show my husband and I how to use the bike lock we purchased from him without us having to ask him to demonstrate. We also bought a bike helmet and he was kind enough to recycle the packaging so we could take the bikes out immediately for a spin. After running over a piece of glass a few weeks later we went in for a tire repair and he had it fixed within 20 minutes while we walked around Piedmont Ave. Edmund's our guy for any future repairs.

It wasn't that long after I sold my car a few years ago that my fears materialized... the crank shaft foot pedal thingy on my cruiser bike just snapped. As you can probably tell by my use of the word "thingy" I am not well versed in bike repair. I walked my bike into Pioneer and a few days later I had got it all fixed up and ready to ride. Quick, easy, and inexpensive.
Maybe I'm just so used to car repairs being so expensive, where it costs you over a hundred bucks just to have some guy look at the thing; but I'm constantly shocked by how cheap my bike repairs are at Pioneer. New tires, new crank shaft thingy, new chain for under a hundred bucks. I had eight broken spokes at one time. EIGHT; and it only cost about 15 bucks to get it all tip-top.
What I'm saying is that Pioneer is a friendly and affordable bike shop. It is extra appealing for a non-bike guy like me who doesn't know a fixed-gear from a dirt bike.
