Thanks Bob! That's great to hear. I will be in for sure! Read more »
i dropped in here after a stop at mother fletchers for a coffee and some baked goods.
i loved the decor, the green is really nice. the coffee was not so good though. the pumpkin whoopie cake was delicious and made me think i need to add molasses to my recipe. my icing is better though....sorry ladies maybe i can teach you how to make it and you can teach me how you make those moist and tastey cakes.
the service was so-so and the workers were much more intereted in talking with friends, but i can't fault them, so would i.
i plan on returning.
love, juston
Right now they have pumpkin whoopie cakes. YOU NEED TO TRY IT. Pumpkin cake-like substance with a maple cream cheese filling. I almost died and went to heaven.
And after my recent visit I should add that the prices aren't as bad as I remembered. In fact, they seemed quite reasonable.

Yum, yum, yum!
Not only is everything here tasty, but a lot of it is unique. They have iced sugar… Read more »
This place is really adorable, from the vintage aprons hanging in the windows to the tiny kids tables and coloring books for your little ones. The staff is awfully friendly, and the selection, while not as crazy huge as some bakeries (Astoria comes to mind) is more than enough to make your mouth water. Love the shortbread cookies, which are bite size, and they have very nice sandwhiches (caprese is good, but order a side of balsamic vinagrette for it) and salads (spinach and goat cheese is delightful) for lunch. Grab an Orangina from the cooler, and you've got a perfect lunch, or throw it in a basket and take it to the park for picnic perfection.
This place just makes me happy!
I've never eaten anything from this place that I have NOT liked. Everything is delicious. The magic bars, bumpy cake, and cookies are awesome. The panini's are delicious. The gelato is Michigan made and amazing - I just wish it was not served in disposable plastic cups.
Attention yelpers...I have a job for you!!!! It involves eating yummy things so listen up!!
You see, I love french macarons. If you have never had one before you seriously do not know what you are missing. Sadly, Michigan does not have many bakery's that carry this tasty treat.
I heard a rumor that Pinwheel carried these delectable treats so I headed over to stock up!!! The bakery is very cute with a retro type feel to the design. I stepped up to thier display case of yumminess and searched for my macarons. Sadly there were none there.
Here is where you come in yelpers. They advised me that they were not stocked today because the macarons were poor sellers?!?!?! I feel it is my job....nay, my duty to let Michigan know how delicous these cookies are. So...back to your job. Go to Pinwheel and ask for a macaron!!! Hopefully if enough people DO THEIR JOB then they will start stocking them again.
You may think this is the end of my review...but its not. I mean...I was in a bakery..OF COURSE I am going to order up some goods! It was very hard to decide. Everything looked amazing. We decided to stack our bakery box full. We ordered up a peanut butter cookies stuffed with brownie bites, a key lime pie bar, a lemon tart, a bumpie cake and a lavender shortbread cookie.
The husband and I scarfed down our cookies right then and there and saved the other treats for later. My shortbread cookie was amazing. I love things that include lavender so it already had me there. Even though it was small it packed a delicous butter punch. The husbands cookie was just so/so...I think the description sounded much better on paper then it tasted. oh well...not everything can be perfect.
Our three other treats are currently chillin' in our fridge just calling our name. I will admit...I have tasted all three and they are all fabulous. I can't wait until my late night snack...I am counting down the minutes!
Tax Day. A rueful reminder of how Keynesian economics is cramping my style. Alas, I had to drown my capitalistic sorrows in an Alexander Hamilton worth of macarons and shortbread at Pinwheel Bakery.
Gone are the days when my only cares in the world were kites and Mary Poppins songs, and when the biggest decision I ever had to make was what color My Little Pony I wanted for my birthday. So on a day that's so clouded with our 60,000-page tax code written in Jargonese, overcomplicated tax credits, valuating one's 401(k), and other adult concerns, Pinwheel Bakery is a lovely trip back into whimsical youthfulness.
Pinwheel is unlike most bakeries in the area, not only because of their bright palette and quirky decor, but because of their selection. There is only one display case of baked goods, none of which are flamboyant Detroit-takes-a-stab-at-Viennese-style pastries with chocolate arcs jutting out of them at obtuse angles. Instead, Pinwheel focuses on simple cookies, muffins, and bars--many of them vegan--but with adult flavors like lavender and ginger molasses.
The shortbread is wonderful--soft, buttery, and it melts in your mouth with that slight almost-sogginess that is so characteristic of good shortbread. Pinwheel charges a hefty $15.00/pound for the shortbread, but that feeling of velvety butter on your tongue is worth its weight in gold.
And the raspberry macarons, even though they taste more like strawberry, are delicious. The egg-and-sugar dome is aptly light and airy, filled with a creamy raspberry almost-ganache. The other flavors--lemon and chocolate--will disappoint. The lemon has an overwhelming sugary tartness akin to Sweet Tarts candy, and the chocolate dome has the texture and consistency of a Betty Crocker brownie. Just stick with the raspberry, as should Pinwheel.
And finally, we come to service, where Pinwheel seals its three-star fate. Emotionless, expressionless staff who care more about getting customers out of the store than treating said customers well. And they broke my cardinal rule for restaurateurs: always thank customers for their patronage.
Fortunately for Pinwheel, supply and demand rules work in their favor, as I have nowhere else in Detroit to go for such fabulous shortbread. It's simple microeconomics, really.
I love Pinwheel Bakery. They are fun and smart and if you add a little flour and sugar in there, it's a pretty complete package. I have had a few things over the last couple of years (for example, my Mexican Chocolate Cupcake) that have tasted like they may have been out a little too long, but overall the quality is great for cookies, cupcakes and bars. I did order one sheet cake and one personal cake last year for my sister's graduation. The chocolate marble cake was a little off. It tasted like it had maybe too much baking powder in it or something, but it looked lovely with fresh flowers. My sister's 8" cake was VERY nicely done (banana nut) with cream cheese frosting and fresh flowers on top. It tasted VERY good. A few of my vists have been hit-or-miss, but you can definitely taste the dedication and artfulness that go into each bite. I keep going back for the generally friendly service (usually... there are one or two people there who don't always seem happy to be there) nd the variety... and the unique, frosted sugar cookies! Overall well done.
Funky. Fresh. Cute.
I decided to do things a little different today. Pastries @ the Pinwheel bakery and then lunch. My sweet tooth needed some attention, so to appease it, I ordered a raspberry macaroon, 3 chai almond tea cakes, a ginger molasses cookie and a sparkling clementine drink. The macaroon was so buttery delicious, and the chai almond tea cakes were equally delish. They had bumpy cake in the fridge, but it wasn't one of those chocolate cravings.
I could see myself perched on one of their chairs, sipping and snacking away while the whole world was passing me by. I'd go in there everyday if I lived close by. The environment is so uplifting with the bright lime green painted walls and teal accents and multi-colored origami hanging from the lights and ceiling. Low-ledges and chairs and stools for the kids to sit and color while enjoying a cupcake or cookie. They even showcase the children's artwork in their windows and on their walls. They have some kid's books too. They have cute vintage aprons on display that are for sale and the cutest knick-knacky looking shelf for the sugar/creams for coffee with homemade honey and the like.
They also packaged the macaroon and chai tea cakes in their own cellophane mini baggy with the pinwheel bakery logo sticker. Very cute.
The owner is my friend's aunt so I grew up eating her baked goods. When she told me she was opening a bakery I was ecstatic. She is also an accomplished artist so it's one of the coolest looking stores in Detroit. She uses only the best ingredients and loves food as much as I do.
Shortly after she opened, I gained twenty pounds. It may be a coincidence, but I think not. I was eating twice my weight in macaroons on a daily basis.
I've slowed down but I'll never be 145 lbs again while Pinwheel is down the street.
Pinwheel Bakery is a gem. A lot of love goes into running this business, and it shows. The treats are out of this world. I've had cupcakes (I brought a half-dozen mini cupcakes to work as a treat the other day, and everyone raved about them. The frosting, both chocolate and white, was thick, creamy, and delicious), cookies (check out the adorable animal-shaped cookies--I've had cute little french poodles and penguins), rosemary biscotti, cheese popovers, and more.
When I got married in 2007, Pinwheel made our wedding cake. Anne, the owner, was incredibly easy to work with. I brought in some photos of cakes I liked, and she put her own spin on things. I have uploaded a photo of the cake so everyone can see what an awesome job she did. We ended up with chocolate cake with white cream frosting, and we got so many compliments on it. A couple guests at the wedding have in turn gone to Pinwheel for their own wedding cakes!
For as long as I can remember I've been cursed with a sweet tooth. You name it cookies, cakes, muffins, scones, if its sugary goodness, I'll consume it. So, when I got word that there was not just a new bakery in Ferndale, but the raddest of rad bakeries, I hopped in the Suzuki and made a trip to 9 Mile and Woodward to see what the buzz was about.
Located in the Ferndale shopping district Pinwheel Bakery offers a little something for everyone big or small. For the kids, books, paper and other activities to entertain while munching on an oatmeal cookie. And for the big kids how about lavender shortbread cookies, scones, Mexican tea cookies, and coffee cakes? No, not a sweet eater? Then try a freshly prepared panini like the Italian Caprese or the Mascarpone Pear with bacon, mascarpone cheese and more.
Everything handcrafted in this bakery is made with the freshest of ingredients, dedication and care. The staff is attentive and friendly which only makes the experience that much better. Oh, and the darling retro decor is fantastic. So, after noshing on a brownie and some coffee my sweet tooth was at easy and my stomach happy.
For the love of Bob, get a panini from here!
Out of any place in Ferndale, including Maria's, this is the best faux Italian sandwich I've had. Great cheese, good meats, fresh red pepper... what's not to love?
The cafe is on the higher end of cafes without being pretentious - let's say, comfy. Not overly large, but the seating area is large enough to not feel cramped.
There's so many places on 9 mile in Ferndale to grab coffee. I like their coffee a lot, but I like how they do cold drinks better. You can get really awesome cold drinks that are rivaled only by Cafe du Marquis in Royal Oak - that is, not only coffee drinks, but a whole slew of iced goodies. I'd suggest trying one of the natural sodas.. you won't be disappointed.
This place is a little quieter than some of the places in town that blast muzak and can't seem to keep enough tables to keep up with the hip and business types. Come here and you will be relaxed!
I go to Pinwheel Bakery maybe once or twice a month. What a mistake (in a positive sense). By the time I leave there, I've had several cookies, a cup of coffee, and get a few items to go.
The economy of metro Detroit is making it tough for so many small businesses. Several months ago, the bakery's owner was in the Detroit Free Press speaking on how the economy is making it tough for small businesses like them.
Definitely support this place. Its a keeper.
Based on previous reviews, I had to make a stop here Friday after work. Needless to say, I've already been back and it's Saturday! The coconut macaroons are rich and buttery goodness and the pinwheels are addicting as well but the creme' de la creme' here is the bumpy cake. Sinfully rich and decadent, it is all you need to satisfy any chocolate craving.
Very nice place run by the nicest group of ladies you could meet. This is my favorite place for espresso. Great pastries include the "Magic Bar" and the oatmeal cookies. These are worth the trip alone. The decor is bright and attractive with large origami pieces hanging from the ceiling. They have recently added sandwiches which I am looking forward to sampling. They also make custom cookies which I have purchased and given out for Valentine's day with great success. I highly recommend the Pinwheel Bakery in downtown Ferndale.
This is one charming little bakery. The windows are always cutely decorated with children's artwork. There is even a children's corner inside where the kids can draw. This isn't a place to go if you like sweets covered in thick frosting, but for homemade baked goods that are light and flaky with just the right sweetness, Pinwheel is your place. Cappucino's are made by hand, no machines, and pretty good. Try the brownies, lemon coconut bar, mexican tea cookies, mousse, scones.... heck try everything, its all good! Well maybe except the coffee. That's eh.
If you want a cookie, brownie, treat.....anything......do not go anywhere else. They have the best of everything, they make everything themselves and they are cool. Maybe I'm biased because I walk by almost daily and they run out to pet my dogs and give them treats....I just love them. And they make some lunch stuff too.
