so, bf and i have been wanting to go camping so with an open weekend and not much time to plan, reservations for a site were hard to come by...luckily spots were open at pinezanita, so bf decided we'd check this out...despite the reviews...

given our recent stay i would have to say the following:

camp staff -- polite and courteous (although not overwhelmingly so)

site -- clean, sufficient with picnic bench, firepit, and plenty of room

campgrounds facilities -- standard portapotties with free showers in the front of the grounds (i personally prefer camps with wooden structures instead of portapotties)

it was a crowded site, so don't expect any privacy but at the same time, no one really bothers you or is in the way...pets are welcome as long as they are leashed and they have strict fire policies (has to be put out by 11p)...and you're super close to julian so it's an easy stop for lunch and pie when you check out! :)

all in all, wouldn't necessarily go back right away, but not sure why all of the negative reviews! it's a campsite, not the ritz!

Pretty cool camp site.  We checked in with the courteous and friendly staff and set up shop.  This isn't a place I would park an RV due to the tight drive up, however, I think it's perfect for a day or two tent style.  They have this little pond that's just brown water...seems like it could be a breeding ground for mosquitos but I never seen one.  Thank god!

The facilities are small with only one place to use the showers and a decent toilet.  Then again you're CAMPING!!!  I actually liked it and we had no issues.

We have camped here for 4 years now, love it. Always a very nice place to camp. The staff is friendly & welcoming. Nice & quiet, well maintained. This is our favorite getaway. Great places to walk the dogs. Saw some wild turkeys roaming around.

Sites are small, port-a-potties In the camping area, showers ok, rude at first but nice once they got to know me (it should be the other way around)..., I would never stay here again, camping spots are 10 feet apart, dirty bathrooms (they need cleaning serves 2-3 a day on the weekends), private really..., raise the price and hire customer service agents not rude people with heart beats, I had high hopes but it didn't work out.

This was my first time camping around the city of Julian (which is known for its famous apple pies).

I guess I didn't do well enough research on the area.

While the park staff were nice and helpful... and the place was clean and not overcrowded.... I must say I have had much better camping experiences.

Pinezanita is a a private campground... its located next to a variety of ranches on Hwy 79 and  its because of this that Pinezanita falls short in the camping experience.

Although the campground does offer a small fishing pond and a small trail to follow within its property... i would hardly call it the wilderness.

Also, and this pissed me off actually, you must turn off your fire by 11pm!!!
The ranger came by and gave us a warning... but we kept our fire burning for an extra hour, long after all our neighbors had given up on theirs.
What's up with that rule? I understand the idea of quiet hours... but come on? Can't a camper just quietly stay warm by their hard-earned fire???

This place is nice for families with small children that want a more contained camping experience.. or for first time campers.

But if you want a the real deal just continue up the road and make a left on hwy S-1.  Book a camping spot on one of the many campgrounds within the Cleveland National Forest!
    (That place rocked my socks!)

My boyfriend and I stopped by here because we needed a place to pitch our tent before our hiking adventure near Palomar.  This place blows.

It's more of a trailer park than a "campground".  They have lawns and dirt for you to put your tent on, but you are surrounded by trailers.  The best part was our camping neighbors who had these Pomeranian dogs that kept running away from them.  However, the owners refused to put them on leashes or tie them up, so all day and night we hear this lady yelling, "COME HERE CINNA-MINIMINIMINIMINI!!!!!" (The dog's name was Cinnamon)  It was awesome.

This place is not where you want to come to get the "great outdoors camping experience", but it'll make due if you are tired, just need a place to stop for the night, and don't have time to find another campsite.

We love Julian and wanted to do a little trailer camping last Sept.  I prefer a sleeping bag rolled out on the ground but a couple times a year it's nice to have long hot showers and 120 volts.  We picked this park from a couple similar choices found on the internet. I saw there is a fishing pond.  The pics looked nice.  I was not disappointed so much as to say we didn't have a nice trip but I won't come back here if that helps.  It's a little too developed for me with all the permanent residents.  Trailers with wrap around porches and lawns in thier sites.  Our site felt a little more like camping in somone's front yard than a campground.  The previously afformentioned 11pm fire rule is RIDICULOUS.  Finally, the operator charges $5 to fish for the palm size bluegill even if you release them.  I thought that was a rip off.

Office help very rude and unorganized. Website missleading. No trials for hiking. If you want to fish you have to pay extra. Camp sites have No privacy and are very small. Only good thing is they have showers.

Wow, after reading the reviews and the fact that the "ranger" responded to them to defend himself makes me not want to ever return here again! My friend owns a trailer up there and we were told if we wanted to stay the night at his trailer, we would have to call an make reservations? WTF? Something about new ownership. Whatever! He OWNS the trailer. Why should you have to make reservations to stay at your own place?  Well, they have the trailer up for sale because of these and many other nazi rules in affect. This place is ridiculous! Don't even bother camping at that place. Go somewhere else unless you want to be surrounded by trailers and be under fascist rule at all times. F*ck that place!

I have done a lot of camping and I can honestly say I will NEVER return to pinezanita.  I booked 3 sites for a group of friends.  The office staff was so rude both to me and to each of the 6 people who checked in at various times over the weekend.  While the office assistants attempted to accommodate my friends and myself, the owner, manager, was so impatient and intolerant to include rolling her eyes at me and asking personal questions of my friends as they checked in.  The campsites offered no privacy and the 11pm fire out "with water" rule was difficult to abide by.  Save your 25 bucks and go camp at green valley falls, Heise park, or paso picacho.

We stayed there one night in our RV. It was nice! Clean, quiet. The only thing I didn't like was the 11pm campfire limit rule. (I like to stay up late and quietly enjoy the fire). Other than that, we had a nice, level spot and the staff was very nice! I would go back!

great campsite!  or maybe we got the best camping site on the whole park.  lot 212, 213, or etc, right next to the pond.  flat site, with gravel , and great view of the pond.  lots of trees to shade the campsite.  it was amazing.  i would definitely come back again!
