I've had short hair almost my entire life. I like the way it looks, the get ready and go ease of it, and the overall freedom that comes with saying buh-bye to the ponytail. However, if anyone thinks the short hair cut in itself is as easy as the styling then YOU'RE WRONG.
It takes someone with skills to get it right, that perfect piecy-ness without turning a fabulous pixie into G.I. Jane. Pin-ups gets it right, for sure.
I'd just moved to Ojai and was getting shaggy, i needed a haircut bad but had no clue where to turn. With the help of yelp i found Pin-ups and promptly mode an appointment with Krista. Further investigation of their site made me even more confident that this place could do the job right and I was anxious for the shearing to begin.
Walking into the salon I loved the retro look. Very cool and clean with enough space to move around and personal attention right from the moment I walked in. Once I met Krista I found her and the staff friendly and easy to chat with. Robert the owner immediately complimented me on shoes (a great way to win any girl's heart). I already felt as comfortable as any regular and was ready to get down to business.
Working off the retro decor I asked for a short pixie, a la Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby. That wasn't the most accessible reference point so I went a bit more modern, Victoria Beckham. And aha! Krista picked up her scissors and got to work. Each step of the way she consulted me. How short did I want the bangs? More off the top? And to that I said Chop, chop!
The end result was exactly what I wanted and I walked out feeling great, loving my new short hair and being excited for the next time I had an excuse to visit.
Great cut. Friendly and personable staff. Clean salon. Fun and fabulous decor.
New to town and needed a new stylist. Found this place on http://yelp.com and was very happy with the results. Robert's consultation before the cut made me comfortable immediately. He listened to what I wanted-cleaned up layers on my very thick hair-and executed with a good balance of his creative perspective and my requests.
Never thought I could replace my last stylist from NorCal, and happy I took a chance. Will definitely be a repeat customer.
Note the 1940's decor on the wall are all works of the salon, not generic hair models ordered from a catalogue.
LOVE this place. All the stylists are fun and every time I have come here, I walk out stoked. Great place for color or modern styles. They will make you look sharp, for sure.
I've just returned from my haircut at Pin-ups and have to rave about my experience. I moved to Santa Paula/Ventura from SF last August and haven't had much luck finding a new stylist....until now. I love this place!
The service is exceptional---lovely Courtney greeted me the minute I walked in the door and offered me a beverage. She followed up with the best shampoo job I've ever had (and I've had many, let me tell you!) and took special care to towel dry and prep my hair for Robert, the owner/head stylist. This man knows hair and knew exactly how to handle mine (and I have wavy/curly/potentially frizzy hair). Both he and Courtney suggested a great leave-in conditioner that I can use to tame my surf-mangled tresses in and out of the water.
Their prices are VERY reasonable and you can choose the level of stylist you want, if you aren't in the position to pay a bit more for Robert's expertise. They also specialize in retro styles, so if you have a shin dig to attend, they'll doll you up extra special.
Robert gave my hair new life and great styling advice---I will be back.
The decor of the salon is retro and eclectic, theme being Pin Up Girls and what I'd say is a 40's influenced mood. This place really doesn't make you feel like you are in a 'salon'. You sit at the color table (what looks like an old soda shop bar) to have weaves, colors, ect done, and then in a chair station to finish the incredible artwork they perform here.
The staff are incredibly social, polite and always asking what you would like to drink; and that means brewing a fresh pot of coffee if needed, if you're comfortable, if you'd like a magazine, ect. They join in to help if they see a job is gonna be a difficult one (like me, lol)
The one thing that really sticks out for me is the fact that not one, but two people work on my hair at the same time and for me, (it normally takes 4 hours in any other salon) getting out of there after only two hours was a huge treat in itself.
Robert and Courtney worked dilligently on my head, as most stylist equate me as a nightmare; very long and very thick hair, blessing to me, a curse to all stylist. But they were laughing, joking, smiling and truly work so well as a team that it just struck me, this is the way it should be in any salon. But rarely seen.
I have been to salon's all over the country; from Beverly Hills, to Washington DC, to Ft. Lauderdale to Chicago. This one will always stick out in my mind for all its nuances that make the whole a downright exciting and plesant experience.
Skill wise. Robert knows exactly what he's doing, you give him an idea of what you want and his expertise follows suit, then they go to town on your hair. When you are done, you are smiling, and ever grateful someone had told you about this salon.
Highly recommend going, especially if you live in Ventura. They are pro-Ventura and love the idea of giving back to the locale a sense of pride in their work.
I heard about Pin Ups through many people raving about it, thought I'd try it out, and am really satisfied with the results.
WONDERFUL!
Rob is Amazing!!
Meredith & Cassie are fabulous!!
Their event, Valley of the Vixens, was great fun!!!
I'll definitely drive 60 miles again to get my hair done ;)
After a disaster with another salon, I saw their add and made an appointment. Very impressed. Everyone is very courteous but I'm quite partial to Krista. I'm going to make her have my stylish babies with bleach blond hair.
I'm glad I found a good one right off the bat! I just moved to this area and was dreading looking for a new stylist. I had my stylist I've been going to for the last 5-6 years so parting from him was very traumatic and scary thing to do but I had to due to the move. This place was recommended by two of my friends and I also happened to see this place before the recommendation and took a mental note that it may be a good place just from the feel of the salon.
The salon is very conveniently located on Main street and is very visible. It's pop, artsy (but not too much), fun, airy and hip. The staff are all friendly and fun, not weird nor snotty like some other place. Robert is the head stylist and he is good. He's so fast and efficient I was very impressed by his operation. He as an apprentice as an assistant and uses her to do small jobs like mixing color, shampooing, combing, and drying. I've never had a color and cut completed in less than 2 hours!
I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a good cut or color job.
They also have a facial and other aesthetic services so I'll probably go back for that too.
Pricing is decent, not over priced like some LA or other metro area's fancy shops. I have very long hair so my cost probably doesn't compare to most. I do miss my REALLY good price I had with my old stylist...but that came with a long friendship, loyalty, free advertisement (I'm in people business and referred many to him & his salon) so I'll probably have to build that privilege back up again if I were ever to have a deal again...
Went back for my second visit and this time I just did the coloring. Once again, I was very impressed with their quick action and team work. It was done on the dot when I needed to leave (1.5 hours total!) and I looked fabulous :-)
I trust Robert with any color decision! I wish I could handle hair as easily as they make it look...
