Top 10 pizza in the US + cheap beer = winning!

Honestly, they should franchise this place. What a hidden gem in WV! The pizza selection here is nothing but amazing, fresh ingredients make each pie taste STUPID GOOD.

My four recommendations are as follows:
    1. Get the local draft beer, it's delicious.
    2. Order a mushroom garlic white pizza; trust me, you wont regret it.
    3. If you can and the weather is agreeable, sit on their awesome outdoor patio.
    4. Make sure your schedule afterwards has room for relaxation or a nap, you will eat so much because it's SO DANG GOOD.

*Be prepared for a wait as there is limited seating. This is a good thing, as you can hang out at the bar and watch a sports game :)

This place had all the makings of a disappointment. Almost exclusively five-star reviews, mostly from locals, one of the few choices for dining in a small town, and a seeming cult following. I've seen this all before, and my experience with these sorts of places has usually led me to conclude that the folks who reviewed before me don't get out much. But this was an exception. Pies and Pints served me probably the best pizza I've ever had.

Now, I have to qualify that. It's not original pizza napoletana (a trend that I wish would go away, by the way..boooorrrrring), it's not NY style, it's not sicilian, or any of that. What they've done, based on my experience, is to take the qualitative definition of what constitutes a pizza - doughy crust, some type of sauce, cheese, and toppings - and then step back and say, "What can we do to make this taste really, really good?" And they've achieved that goal, serving me the best tasting thing I've ever had on an oven-baked crust. What really made it stand out for me is that they serve pies that are actually thought out in terms of constructing a dish. What I mean by that is that, where even the "best" pizza places usually focus on making each component the best (best crust, sauce recipe, fresh mozz, etc.), these guys actually think about making the whole pizza come together. It's not just a blank canvas with some stuff on it. It works, just as the most well-thought-out entree at a high-end place would. I had the pleasure of trying the philly steak and the cuban pork, and the depth of flavor was just unreal. Everything - the sauce, the cheese, the meats, sauteed vegetables, aiolis, garnishes, a secondary cheese, it was all tailored to the dish that they were trying to create. And it came together.

Beer people might point out that their selection is somewhat run of the mill, given this day and age when you need at least 20 taps and a couple hundred bottles to even mention beer in your name. But I'll give them a pass on that. For me, it's all about the food, and they've sure got that right.

Awesome pizza.  Great crust, not too thin with the right crispiness to it.  They let you do 1/2 & 1/2 on larges, which is always a plus since they have a lot of options.
I highly, highly recommend the shrimp curry pizza & Cuban pork pizza.  Weird?  Maybe.  Delicious?  Absolutely.

They also have a decent beer selection, so you're not going to go thirsty here.

Skip the chips & salsa; not impressed.

Finally, make sure to make reservations ahead of time; otherwise you're going to wait at least an hour on weekends.  It's worth it.

We were in the area for a Boy Scout event, this is going to happen a lot over the next few years, and dropped in for lunch.  Pizza was fantastic!  Service was perfect and we had a great time!

We had 1/2 Chicken Gouda and 1/2 Steak and Mushroom.  Might just have been the best pizza I've ever had!

    New York-style pizza? Check.
    Chicago-style deep dish? Check.
Handcrafted West Virginia pie? Might just be the next best thing.

First Impression: We were greeted with a busy dinner service, a packed lobby waiting to get in and an infectious smell that defined heaven. Right at that very moment, we knew it was going to be a delicious night. Our initial thoughts of having to wait an eternity to be seated were proven wrong. The service was fast - amazingly fast. We were seated within five minutes of wait time by the host who was polite and all smiles. With a casual dress code, the ambiance was family friendly and unpretentious.

Food: For starters, a sample of Fayetteville's very own Bridge Brew Works' Lager and Pale Ale. While we thought  that the Lager fell short of our standards, the Pale Ale knocked our socks off. Brewed just in time for the hot summer months ahead, it was overall a well-balanced American pale ale. With hints of citrus and a great hoppy nose, the upfront bitterness concludes somewhat sweet and wheat-like - a perfect combo to a hot summer day or an order of the Pork & Pepper Nachos that was out-of-this-world delicious. A crispy bed of multi-colored nachos smothered and piled high with marinated pulled pork, seasoned black beans, jalapenos, cheddar cheese, salsa, scallions & chipotle crema? What's not to love? Not soggy. Just fresh and simply to die for!

The appetizer serving was enough for a group of four hearty eaters, so we decided to pace ourselves and move on to the next course, the most important part of our visit --- the Pies. With their appetizing spread of handcrafted flatbreads, it was really hard to choose. From the classic pepperoni and sausage to their pesto to the Thai-inspired pie, our server Kate informed us that a half and half order may be prepared upon request. It  made life a lot easier. The pick: 1/2 Mozzarella Caprese and 1/2 Cuban Pork.

The crust was fluffy and chewy inside but with just the right texture and crisp on the outside. The roasted garlic-infused olive oil was evident, but was not overpowering. The toppings were fresh and divine. The Mozzarella Caprese Pie was generously sprinkled with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, basil & a balsamic reduction that's fragrant and simply exquisite. The Cuban Pork Pie featured the most tender, savory, porky goodness on any pizza dough this side of the Appalachia. We mean business when it comes to our pork almost Anthony Bourdain-like. Pies & Pints most definitely honored and cooked their pork to perfection.

In addition to the Pale Ale, we also paired the pies with Ayinger Bräu-Weisse, a German hefeweizen with a 5.10% ABV. The yeasty taste that most hefes possess balanced well with the pies. The hints of citrus, banana, and clove washed our palates fresh after every bite and left us craving for more. We loved it so much that we couldn't help but let everyone we know taste these delectable and gratifying creations. We got half and half of the Eggplant & Red Pepper with the Mushroom Garlic and a large of the Cuban Pork Pie to go. Yes, it was that serious.

The Service: Exceptional. Fayetteville location assistant manager Stacey stopped by our table to personally welcome us and check in on our food. We even got tweet follow-ups from owner Kim, who made sure our visit was a pleasant one. From start to finish, we were treated with superb customer service. A rare occurrence in most places nowadays.

The Verdict: Pies and Pints Pizzeria serves the best gourmet pizza and an impressive collection of craft brews in two locations: Fayetteville, West Virginia and Charleston, West Virginia. Owners Kim Shingledecker and David Bailey have done an amazing job in maintaining both locations at the top of their class. We encourage all of you to pay them a visit and pamper yourselves to a great dining experience with family, friends, and/or that special someone.

Also, be on the look out for the September issue of Food Network Magazine as they crown the best slices in each state. The Grape Pie from Pies & Pints has been named the best in West Virginia. With that, we must holler 'Get Some!'

    WOW!
I honestly don't know how I could improve on a pizza as good as the ones that they have here. Simply amazing tastes, with some of the greatest crusts I have ever tasted.
We had a large group eat here, and because of that, we had the chance to try several pizzas. My favorite ended up being the Cuban Pork, which at first glance seems like some leftovers that somebody couldn't figure out what to do with. However when you first bite into the pie and get a good crust, with the flavors, you have to pinch yourself to make sure that you didn't fall asleep.
The staff did a great job to make sure that we were helped, and I don't believe that a single cup went empty at any time during the meal.
The only drawback.... This restaurant is about 4 hours away from my house, and as good as the pizza was, I can't bring myself to drive that far for another slice!
    Try this place out!

Excellent and certainly unique pizza. We ordered the mushroom and roasted garlic (with whole, roasted cloves of garlic on top), a classic and the meat pizza with banana peppers. They also let you do 1/2 and 1/2 on the large pizzas, great for sharing/picky eaters. Great crispy thin crusts, robust sauce, definitely a one-off local joint!  Cheap beer too.

Grape pizza?  Yep.  But I had the Cuban pulled pork one.  I am still surprised I ordered it because I'm a traditionalist; pepperoni and cheese for me.  However, the waitress said the Cuban would "create a party" in my mouth...And it did!  Best pizza I ever had.  And the other choices were equally strange.  If I go back I'll try to order the others, but it will be a challenge getting past the Cuban.

I've been visiting Fayetteville annually since 2008 and finally visited the place just this week. Can't believe it took me so long! The food is sophisticated yet accessible and just downright tasty. I'm a Chicago girl with a high expectation of pizza, and this stacked up. The chipotle chicken pie is incredible. Skip the salad and just eat more pizza!

(Oh, and the prices were right, too.)

We were happy to find this place after driving down from Ohio and stopping by the bridge. The decor is a little weird (especially the tent-like room out back), but they have a decent beer selection and the pizza was pretty good. We ordered the pesto pie and the classic pizza, along with some garlic bread with cheese. I wouldn't go out of my way to seek this place out, but if we're in the area again we'd eat here.

We stopped on the way through and had plain cheese pizza. The service is good, the bathrooms are clean, the little playset is a nice touch and worth it if you have children who need to burn off some energy. Great for kids and very welcoming of them.

The Pies though. Sadly mediocre. Not awful. Maybe this is good for the area.

Possibly trying the topping combinations would enhance the experience as would perhaps some of the Pints.

We were on a family vacation and a local said we must try Pies and Pints.  As a jaded pizza guy from New Haven Connecticut, I've heard this so many times and have always come away underwhelmed.  This place delivered.
The traditional stuff, we got it for the kids, was first rate.  The signature pies were off the scale.  We had the pie with Gorgonzola, grapes and rosemary that was amazing.   The selection of beers was great as well.  I wish these folks well.  Highly recommended.

Pies & Pints will be the start of a yearly tradition.  My friend introduced me to this place the night before our Gauley rafting trip. For a little place in Fayetteville, WV, these guys really know what they're doing. It's usually packed with adventure seekers and locals...we had to wait about 40 minutes for a table. It also was Gauley Fest Weekend, so that probably explains the longish wait.

The pizza is phenomenal...I ordered the mushroom, garlic, onion, and feta  pizza. One friend ordered a pizza with eggplant and roasted red peppers, the other friend ordered a pizza with pesto and fresh mozzarella.

If you are with a group, I would suggest each person order a different pie and then sampling each.

Was in the area on Labor Day weekend for some kayaking. Our guide recommended this place for dinner after we mentioned we were thinking about going to Pizza Hut out of desperation for comfort food. Luckily we followed his advice.
There were at least 15 people waiting outside so we were faring the worst when we walked in. Luckily there were 3 seats open at the bar and we were able to sit right down and order drinks and food.
The menu is eclectic and there are plenty of pizza combos you've never seen before, several of which are vegetarian. I went for a typical pesto/roma tomato/feta cheese combo, and it was awesome.
Excellent microbrew beer selection to, and cool bartenders.
Small pizzas are $9-10 and are generally good for one person. I was starving from being on the river all day and ordered a medium and barely finished it on my own. Approx. $15.

    What a great find!

Ate here while passing through on a long car trip after remembering it from our honeymoon 3 years ago. So glad we found it again despite not remembering the name.

They were extremely busy being that is was July 5. The waitstaff were zooming all over the place.
However, we never felt rushed, never had to wait for anything we asked for, and never had empty water glasses. PLUS we never had to ask for them to be filled. For us, this is a big deal at any restaurant. We love attentive staff! And we got it here!

My husband ordered a small Classic (I think)- Pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, banana peppers. He loved it.

I had the Caprese- cheese tomato, large pieces of basil, with a drizzle of yummy balsamic vinegar. The vinegar added the perfect touch of sweetness and acidity to my slices. This is something I will have to try at home.

Beware the water glasses. Both of ours had chips in the rim, mine quite sharp and could have hurt me if I was not inclined to use a straw.

Because we were traveling, we could not drink the beer. But the selection is varied, tap and bottles. Hopefully there will be a time we can visit the area again for an extended amount of time to partake in the drinks.

We enjoyed watching the pizzas cooking in an oven that we have not seen before. (and we visit a lot of pizza places, even had pizza at our wedding reception).

Whenever traveling we will take the long way and skip Beckley from now on to dine here.   It is worth the drive!
    WONDERFUL!

Best Pizza I have had in US.

I visited this place in March 2009 when I went to Monogahela Forest, WV for camping and then rafting on way back to NC.  This place was suggested by a local, our white water rafting guide at Ace Adventure.

Amazing place, wooden furnished floors.  We quickly got a table for our group of 10.  The waiters were very nice.

The dinner was lots of pizza and a couple of beers.

First impression of all different pizzas we ordered: Beautiful!  I know, before this, I had never associated this adjective to pizza!!  But not only were they nicely presented, but also tasted all the better.

The vegetarians among the group (that includes me) had Spinach-Garlic and Eggplant-Roasted Red Peppers pizzas.  Even though I don't eat chicken, the chicken toppings pizzas looked delicious too.

I'll make sure I take of pic of these pizzas next time I go there, which I surely will.  If you are visiting Fayetteville, WV for rafting, don't forget to drop by this place.

Okay their pizza has slim to nill sauce on it. Maybe they ran out the day I was there but they dripped it on and sprinkled a little cheese on it... this was the marinara pie. So I dunno but I like sauce on pizza. The pizza makers were struggling to toss the pies and I saw two pies get holes punched through em. BUT it's a super cool place and the beer is plentiful. I think they need to re-think their sauce situation though.

I went there for the first time while visiting family in WV. I wanted to enjoy the pizza...but I definitely think this place is a little overrated. I was frustrated due to the fact that we asked for our pizza to come without olives and with onions, when it came with the opposite and we were then left with a pizza where the majority of the toppings had to be picked off.  The pizza was so so but nothing special.

I live in a Cleveland burb, but while my daughter was rock climbing at New River Gorge, I found Pies and Pints.  Came in a bit sweaty from my own little hike, but was immediately welcomed.  Sat down at the bar and started talking to a very friendly server who let me sample the brews.  I ordered a local lager and went out to get my netbook cuz they have wifi.  Asked about the pizzas and settled on the chicken gouda.  Man it was fabulous.  Great toppings, thin crust and no grease.  Was a bit irked because it was better than my fave local pizza place here in Cleveland.  But, having been conceived in West Va., I wasn't surprised.  Had another brew (I limited myself to two cuz I had to drive later) and spent a very pleasant almost two hours there till it was time to pick up my daughter.  Great ambiance, chatted with a couple young lovelies at the bar and sang Doors songs with the kitchen.  But, I'm mad at you guys.  Why do you have to be five hours away from me.  I'll be back.  Left with a "Got Some" tee shirt and I don't buy tee shirts.  Thanks for a wonderful Sunday afternoon guys.

I concur!  Five Stars!!!  I am a big whitewater junkie and drive five to eight hours to the area half for the whitewater and half for pies and pints.  Delicious pizza and great drinks.  Even if you don't drink alcohol try the home brew root beer.  The pizzas are ingenious mixtures of things that sound strange but are delicious when you eat them.  Try anything, its all good.

I've been coming to Pies and Pints since they opened  in 2003 and I got to say they are the best bet restaurant in Fayetteville.   The food is  consistently delicious and their beer selection is pretty darn extensive considering the size of Fayetteville.

There are a lot of nontraditional pizza toppings like "chicken chipotle", "Cuban Pork Pie" and the like.    Also really recommend their spinach salad.

Between two people I generally get a large Spinach Salad and a medium sized pizza, and a pitcher of beer.  Also leaves me plenty full.  Delicious!

I would give Pies'  5 stars if it wasn't for the wait.   It gets pretty crowded during the weekends with the influx of visiting climbers and kayakers.  Be prepared to wait 30 min to an hour for a table Saturday night.
