Nothing gets me more pumped up than some good, slow cookin' BBQ. Growing up in Virginia, and then moving to Nashville, with many many trips to the Carolinas in between, I have had my fair share of some good BBQ. A spot that has never seemed to fail is Pierce's BBQ in Williamsburg, VA.

Plopped right between Virginia Beach and Richmond, this place is worth the drive! The pulled pork is straight phenomenal, along with every one of their sides. My go-to is usually the regular BBQ sandwich with a side of onion rings. You really can't go wrong with any choice, but there's just somethin' bout their sauce -- the sweetness with a hint of tang makes you want to top it on everything! The place is kid-friendly with lots of seating, and an outdoor patio for the warmer seasons. Prices are average and it's usually packed, but well worth it!

You know, it is what it is.  My boyfriend's colleague down south of Williamsburg recommended Pierce's as the go-to BBQ joint in the area.  So, we hit it up.  I was skeptical at first, expecting a restaurant with sit down service, instead of the counter where you order then pick everything up.  But the place was packed!  My fears were immediately allayed.

I had some trouble reading the menu with my less than stellar eyes, and finally settled on a pulled BBQ chicken sandwich and hush puppies.  The boy ordered half a rack of ribs, green beans, and cornbread.  And sweet tea!

BBQ is not my favorite kind of food, but it's delish when I'm in the mood.  The pulled chicken was on a soft white roll, and went down really easily.  The ribs were "fall off the bone tender"  - direct quote! - and polished off.  Even though the hush puppies were highly recommended, I wasn't a big fan due to their small size and the fact that they're more crispy than soft in the middle.  I prefer hush puppies from Long John Silver's - less crisp, more yummy inner filling.  The green beans were the favorite of the sides and bursting with flavor and the cornbread was good in the little muffin forms, but would've been better with butter.

Pierce's was a great place to stop at on the drive back home - and a nice prelude to a gas station stop at Dairy Queen.  That's all.

This place is seriously in the middle of nowhere (about 3 miles from the highway), but that is its only downside. Really great pulled pork and the sides are solid. We got the french fries and onion rings, but I wish I had tried the cornbread and mac and cheese. I had a regular-sized pulled pork sandwich, which definitely filled me up, but I observed most people eating the jumbo size, which I probably could have made room for as well.

The place was packed when we arrived at around 5pm on a Friday night, and it only got busier. Nevertheless, the service was incredibly quick. We were in and out of there in about 20 minutes. The atmosphere is extremely casual, almost like a fast food restaurant. This place was definitely the highlight of my trip to Williamsburg. I'd come back next time I'm in town.

Got the dinner combo that serves pulled pork, pulled chicken, ribs and 3 sides. The pork was a little salty...if they gave us a bun or some kind of bread it would've been perfect. The pulled chicken was great, bursting with flavor! The ribs fell right off the bones and melted in my mouth. We got slaw (a little sour), baked beans (perfect) and macaroni and cheese (rather bland and not crispy enough). Really good if you want something fast and fairly cheap.

Man , this place is fantastic. Wife grew up in the 'Burg and always talks about this place. Stopped in a few years ago on the way home from Busch Gardens and got some sauce to go.
Decided this past week to not only get some more sauce but to get a sandwich for the drive. Man oh man was that a great idea. Best BBQ I've ever had (and I've eating NC and TX BBQ before)

This is the best pulled pork that I've found in Virginia (which isn't necessarily saying much), and ranks up there with what you can get in North Carolina (which is saying something).  It is North Carolina-ish in style, with a vinegar-based sauce that is heavier on the tomato than is typical.  It is also a bit different than Carolina in that the meat is heavily sauced before it is served, while most NC places I've tried serve with minimal sauce and bottles on the table.

All of that said, the pulled pork is REALLY good, the sauce strikes a nice balance of richness against acidity and spice, so you are less likely to get the meat sweats from it.  As a lot of other people have suggested, the JS Special is the way to go; a pulled pork sammich, fries (or hush puppies, also good), a drink (bloody good sweet tea), and a cookie.  If you've in the area and are a barbecue fan, you'd be crazy to miss this place!

My husband and I reeeaaaaaally like Pierce's.  I'd eat their pulled chicken dinner every week if it was calorie and guilt free.  My husband slobbers over their pulled pork dinner.  It's not just their BBQ, either...their sides are just as delicious.  The hush puppies are nicely deep-fried, slightly sweet, and shaped like thick baby carrots for perfect two-bite consumption.  I use my thick-cut fries as the vessel to eat the yummy cole slaw, which is light, tangy, and crunchy.

They are always super crowded during lunch and dinner hours, but they have an over sized parking lot (which they need), and their lines move very quickly.  Their counter clerks are friendly, helpful, and efficient, and they always have staff cleaning up around the condiment and drink stations.  The crowd at Pierce's is a good mix of locals, tourists, and folks passing by on I-64, and if you have a pet, no worries...they have picnic tables scattered around their property for outdoor seating.

My husband and I usually get their food to-go, and it holds up just fine for the short drive home.  They aren't stingy about saucing up their meats, but we always pump several extra containers of their tangy, thick, and sweet BBQ sauce, which is self-serve at the condiment station.

We go to Pierce's about 5 times a year. I think it has really good Chicken BBQ and Ribs, but I think the pulled pork is WAY too smokey, so we never get it. I mean terribly, overpowering smokey. The sides are ok- I love their crinkle fries and their cole slaw. Mac-n-cheese tastes like Chef Boyardee. The hush puppies are fried perfectly!

Ain't no pit in this BBQ.  Taste like plain old oven cooked beef.  Also, ain't nothing special about the BBQ sauce.  Flat, old, lifeless, and uninspiring BBQ.  Folks at Pierce's need to drive around and re-acquaint  themselves to real BBQ.  The southern BBQ spirit has left the 2011 Pierce's.

Driving down I-64?  Over by Colonial Williamsburg?  Just stopping through?  If you can see the signs for Pierce's, I recommend you stop through.

This BBQ is some of the best I've had in VA.  I enjoyed the brunswick stew and then the ribs and chicken combo.  Finger licking good food.  Sides are plentiful and you'll walk out of here feeling extremely stuffed if you're not careful.  Definitely worth the stop on I-64 if you've got the time.

I've been here twice now - the first time was around Christmas and the place was packed to the gills.  Went just the other day in the heat of summer and it was way more chill...literally.  That place was freezing!

I really just wanted a pulled pork sando so I ordered a jumbo one of those as well as a pulled chicken.  I was stuffed.  Their sweet tea is where it's at and they have the best ice - the little ball kind.  Love this place.  Kind of in a weird location but it's worth finding.

We frequently stop by here in our way to the beach or while in Williamsburg.  We usually get the pulled BBQ sandwiches and kids meals.   The sandwiches are served with optional slaw, the potato salad is decent, the fries are cooked to crispy on the outside and potato-y on the inside, the mac and cheese is not so exciting.  This last trip we shared an order of onion rings and they were done perfectly crisp on the outside.   The iced tea is good too.

Yes, seating van be challenging as no matter what time of day we stop they are busy.   However, if you look for seats while waiting for your order to come up something will usually open up.  Alternatively, if the weather is nice there is a lot of picnic table seating outside which is also a nice feature when we have our dog with us.

I remember thinking I'd go off into the world and have adventures a million miles from home. Instead I work in the area in the same business all of my childhood neighbors did and people I've forgotten are suddenly popping out of the woodwork. I'm not sure how I feel about all that, but I'm glad my life has led me back to Pierce's.

Pierce's has had an odd history, going from a humble shack to a small empire and then willingly returning to its humble roots. That, to me, is the American dream: achieving success, seeing the tempts of fame and preferring instead to stick with what you love. Yes, it looks like a Wendy's, a holdover from their attempts to modernize in the 80s-90s. No, they won't change it. The second T in "Pitt" is there because the owner was too cheap to fix the signmaker's mistake. That's how they roll.

Beyond the naturally knee-weakening haze of hickory smoke and vinegar, the product is first rate. It's a somewhat sweeter sauce, but subtle enough as to not detract from the excellent meat. A good barbecue sandwich should be finely shredded without getting rid of the awesomely irrregular texture that makes pork so great; Pierce's understands this. And they know civilized humans don't eat barbecue without plenty of slaw under the bun. The best sides are the hush puppies and crispy/melty sweet potato sticks. Pierce's is weird, but the best things in life often are. I ate my lunch in the pouring rain by the smokehouse, reveling in the smell and sound and all my senses and how wonderful it is to be alone.

I'm stunned -- stunned! -- that Pierce's has gotten such negative reviews from occasional restaurantgoers! This restaurant is a fundamental building block in the Williamsburg area. I've had barbecue all over, most recently St. Louis and Kansas City style, so it's safe to say that I mean it when I say you can't go wrong here. Pierce's is cheap, delicious, and wonderful.

If it's your first time, definitely go with the pulled pork sandwich special. It's a huge sandwich on a big sesame seed bun with optional mayo-based slaw. You'll enjoy it served with a huge helping of crispy crinkle-cut fries that take more ketchup than you'd ever imagine -- and for dessert, enjoy a delicious and warm oatmeal or white chocolate macadamia cookie.

Even though it's not BBQ, I can also admit to really loving the J.C. Special, which features the same as the above with a burger swapped in for the barbecue sandwich. They serve the burger with a little bit of mayo and pickles, and it comes across as a bit of an elite Five Guys-style feast.

When you arrive at Pierce's -- and it can be tough to find, so pay close attention to your directions -- you'll often find it hugely crowded. Lots of people isn't always a testament to the quality of a restaurant, but it is here; people come here from all over Virginia because you really can't do better in the Commonwealth.

(My favorite part about Pierce's is how all the ice machines are filled up with little pellets instead of big cubes. Maybe it's silly, but the drinks taste so much better that way!)

    Dig in!

Love this place, we stop there every time through Williamsburg. The pork sandwiches with cole slaw are excellent, pork is moist and tender. Onion rings are big and crisp, the potato salad has nice chunks of potato as well as a little egg in it. The kids meals are pretty good portions and the place is always busy. The move folks through pretty well and it keeps the food fresh.

They have an outdoor picnic area and space for folks who are bringing their dogs on the trip with them to get their legs stretched.

A sandwich and 1 side is more than enough meal for most anyone. If you are going with someone else, get 2 different sides and share them.

I happen to ask a resident of Williamsburg where the best place was for BBQ and she suggested this place.
Oh yeah...good stuff! Their sauce is sweet but yet with a little bit of a zing at the end. I had the pulled BBQ chicken dinner with their hush puppies, baked beans, Cole slaw, crinkle fries, and ribs. This wasn't all for me. I was splitting it:-)
The ribs were literally falling off of the bone. No silverware necessary for these!
The Pitt makes their own BBQ sauce which you can purchase.
The staff is very friendly and are quick at wiping down the tables to get people seated. If I'm ever in the area again and have an itch for BBQ, this is the place I'll be eating.

Pierce's is apparently famous for their BBQ, but I have never been blown away.  It's always busy, loud, just a bit sticky to the touch everywhere, and the food is just ok.  The cinnamon (or whatever it is) is just weird on the BBQ.

I prefer Hog Wild or Alamo in Richmond.

    Coming from a tourist perspective:
My friend and I found out about Pierce's through the resort that we were staying at. We were looking for serious southern food (seeing as we're from Philadelphia, we wanted to sample the "local flavor"), specifically fried chicken. Unfortunately, we could not find any, and instead decided to try some BBQ instead. We were able to find the location fairly easily (thanks GPS!), and were very impressed with the overall appearance of the restaurant. The colors were vivid and inviting, as was the smell. What was most impressive was the fact that everyone inside was VERY friendly! Evan, our cashier, answered every single question completely. He was so nice and helpful...he gave my friend and me free samples of the pulled pork and BBQ chicken...both were so delicious it was hard to decide!

I ended up ordering a pulled pork sandwich, a half-rack of ribs, hush puppies, mac and cheese, and collard greens. The only reason I gave this place 4 instead of 5 stars was because I felt that the pork in the sandwich and on the ribs was dry and it became frustrating to eat. I was hoping for that juicy type of meat that one usually expects with ribs. Nevertheless, it was so delicious! That was the ONLY thing that I was slightly disappointed about...I wish I could rate this place 4.5/5. I'd go back there in a heart beat, and am hoping and praying that Pierce's BBQ  moves up to Philly!!

Living in Colorado we are always "on the hunt" for REAL southern vinegar based BBQ.  We were visiting Williamsburg and have family in the Virginia area that recommended Pierce's to us.  We were not disappointed !

The teen in the group insisted we go back multiple times over our trip since he couldn't get enough !

The place can get so busy the line is out the door and the there are no tables to eat at. Try to visit at an off time or get the meal "to go".

Used to go to Pierce's in the early 1970s as a kid, when it was a drive up counter. Went a few days ago with my kids, and it was... OK.

I liked my pulled pork with slaw sandwich a lot. My husband's ribs were good but dry (he didn't see the sauce dispencer on the condiments bar until he was done). The greatest raves were over the kid's hamburger, which evidently was made from scratch and delayed our order (but that's OK, it was worth the wait.)

The decor didn't bother us, except that it all seemed very self-congratulatory and self-promoting... maybe that energy should go back into the food? our experience wasn't bad, but many of the reviews here are not so flattering...

I also had really high hopes for this place.  I'e heard a lot about it...and have seen it driving home a lot.  Stopped in...not really knowing what to expect.

Counter experience is a lot like McDonalds.... went to grab fork knife and they were out....the guy working there had no idea when they were going to bring them out to restock....and the girl was busy texting on here phone.

Food was ok.....wasn't impressed with it....and really reminded me of a fast food get then in and out place. might try again...but not in a big rush to.

I will give this a three-star, tending more to the Meh, I have experienced better. I brought my family of five plus my in-laws that totaled our party out at 11. That is not a good party size for any restaurant, let alone this place.

The Q was good, though I had to pause when the girl at the counter if I wanted chicken or pork BBQ. BBQ is pork BBQ, everything else is just...chicken.

I will give the wait staff a star for the service. Considering the crowd was so thick one would have thought an AARP bus or two had pulled up on its way to Colonial Downs, the service was fast and the staff was pleasant.

Next time we are passing though on I-64 I think I will see if we can call ahead and do a pick-up.

Both my husband and I are BBQ lovers and know our BBQ. We were very excited to get to Pierces as we had heard soo much about it. Sadly it wasn't what we were hoping for. The ribs were not like everyone had said, the sauce had a weird taste and the ribs themselves didn't have a good flavor either. I will say the ribs are tender, they are not falling off the bone and very tender and easy to chew but that seems to be the only plus.  My husband had the chopped BBQ sandwich which he said was okay and our son had chicken fingers which of course is hard for anyone to mess up. I also want to add that it was a group of 6 or 7 of us and we were all very disappointed. My girlfriend did say that the catfish was really good.

I stopped in here on a visit back to Williamsburg and had a great lunch of BBQ pork.  The pork was delicious and cooked to perfection.  I put a little extra sauce on and was in heaven.  These guys aren't reinventing the wheel, just serving up really tasty BBQ.  They're not super cheap, there can be waits and it is off the beaten path, but it is well worth a stop.  If you're in Williamsburg on business, pleasure or live there, this is a great place for dinner.  It strikes me as a place to bring a ton of kids too; it is casual and family friendly.

3.5 Stars---I give them 3+ stars for the pulled pork and crinkle cut fries and 5 stars for the hushpuppies!  I have been going to Pierce's for years and other than the aforementioned items honestly the rest doesn't even matter.  For $7.95 you get a sandwich, fries (or any side you wish...I usually get the hushpuppies), a drink and a cookie.

It may not be the best barbecue you will ever have, but it makes a great stopping point when you are traveling up and down I64.  The Hushpuppies are just plain great!

First impressions when pulling up: This place looks like a creepy old Wendy's (and apparently we're not alone with that view), not a BBQ joint. Also evident is the lack of smoke rising from anywhere which was also a bad sign.

We walk in and the creepy old Wendy's looks just like a creepy old Wendy's inside, full of what seems to be tourists and packaged nuts wherever you looked. Also the lovely scent of bleach greeted us and as far as we could tell, Pierce's was pretty clean. Next, we looked at the menu.

After looking over the menu for a few minutes we noticed 1 thing: nowhere were the words "beef" or "pork". You had "1/4 BBQ platter", "ribs platter", etc. with no mention of what kind of meat you were receiving (aside from the chicken). This in combination with the interior decorating (and the endless shelves of nuts) seriously creeped me out but it continued to get worse.

The rest of my family got over it and decided to walk up to order to find out that the drink machine was broken and we'd have to get bottled drinks instead. Sure it kind of sucked but we could deal with it until we found out we'd be paying extra for room temperature bottles of Stewart's root beer/orange soda. At this point the combination of lack of drinks and the entire experience creeping us out caused us to pursue other dining options.

I have to say that I LOVE this place! I have been fortunate to enjoy food from all over the country, and this place by far has my favorite BBQ! Their prices are very reasonable, portions are healthy, and it has an old style comfort feel to it. The BBQ has a unique flavor, maybe not for everyone I wouldn't classify it as Carolina or Texas style but PIERCE'S style. If you are a tourist and looking for a Virginia original, this is the place.

Very tender ribs, sauce was heavy on the cloves though. Friendly staff and short wait time a plus; very limited seating was a minus. Folks hover while you finish so your seat can be quickly claimed. It's a shame that slow food like this is served in such a rushed environment!

Heard some GREAT things about this place, so my dad and girlfriend and I stopped in on our way back from a day on Skyline Drive.

We all had ribs and pulled pork and chicken, one of their combo platters.  I felt like the ribs were kinda dry, and their sauce was ordinary.  The pulled meats were moist and enjoyable enough, but nothing to get excited over.

My dad, however, loved it all.  Thought it was great.  What's wrong with him?

My girlfriend, I think, was in between.  She enjoyed, but wasn't in love.

Personally, I think I was spoiled by our previous outing to the County Grill, in Hampton.  THAT place has my BBQ heart.

THIS place...well, the decor leaves a lot to be desired...basically just a McDonald's that serves BBQ.  There's a couple of folks that work the counter, taking orders, and a couple more who call out your number and give you your bag of food.  But there must be an ARMY behind the scenes. because that food comes out QUICK, even with a huge crowd of customers inside and out.  I think they served close to 250 orders just in the time we were there, which wasn't all that long.  And even though the food didn't really impress me, it wasn't exactly cheap and dirty slop...their kitchen is on the ball, efficiency-wise.

And really, with that many people coming in the door, maybe impressing ME doesn't need to be too high on their agenda.

I had high hopes (and maybe thats the problem ... sorry).  This place just didn't do much for me.

I do my own Q, and from the reviews here hoped to find a benchmark to try and match.

Food was delivered timely, but the whole experience reminded me of a trip to the DMV.

Food itself was decent, but the sauce didn't do more than suggest flavor.  Had ribs, chicken, and pork.  Chicken was really good, pork so so, and the ribs ... meh.

The better I've experienced was the one down a road a bit.  Glad I stopped and tried it, but won't be back.  County Grill and Smokehouse is a better place for me... must have more brisket!

Yes, it does look like a Wendy's but don't hold that against it.  The food was excellent.  I had succulent and tasty pulled chicken BBQ, hubby had the $8.99 BBQ dinner plate with BBQ pulled pork, french fries, excellent, crisp outside, not pasty inside, hush puppies, and tangy minced coleslaw.  A great deal if you can eat that much.

Kids had hot dogs and hamburgers, their go-to meal.  One day their taste buds will grow up.

Another great pit stop along I-95, and the price is right.

I had heard much of Pierce's from locals and then I read the reviews and they seemed split between food is awesome and this place looks like a Wendy's.  I thought to myself that who gives a crap what the place looks like, the food matters most.

Not so much.  See, when I'm down south and stopping by a renowned barbeque joint, I want to imagine some guy named Bleeding Gums Murphy outside in the pouring rain doting over his smoker.  Remembering his recipe, even though he has no idea where he parked his car.  Coming to work without pants, but no one cares because his ribs are so good.

I stopped by for dinner and this place does look like a Wendy's.  It's really bright and you get in line like a Wendy's.  I ordered a Pulled Pork Sandwich combo which came with fries, a drink and a cookie.  It's a lot of food.  The sandwich was good.  It was a little small with coleslaw on it and a little light on dressing.  The fries were crinkle cut and lukewarm which was sad because they got cold quick.  The cookie was good.  Oatmeal Raisin.

The pork was good.  Should have gotten a rib maybe.  But the atmosphere really detracted from it.  And the food had a fast food look and the one thing you don't want barbeque to be is fast.  When you go to a place what sounds better?  "We leave these in the smoker for 3 months." or "We put these in for about 45 seconds on each side" I'm sure they smoke it for a lot longer than it takes to serve it.  And the place was clean.  Too clean for a bonafide BBQ joint. Sanitized even.
