Review from Lara M.
Dunedin, FL
This place is fantastic. It definitely has an old-fashioned feel. We stayed in a suite, which was fantastic. The bed was large and comfortable.
As others have said, the staff is friendly and helpful. The free happy hour and breakfast was a nice touch. We would definitely stay here again. -

When I got the groupon, I didn't know what to expect. I was hoping for something comfortable and interesting. I found it interesting. It was not comfortable.
Pros:
First, the staff is extremely helpful and really nice. That goes a long way in the hotel industry. These are people you WANT to talk to over the phone! Pleasant, honest, and ready to help. Great staff!
Second, lounge is truly charming. The cocktail hour selection wasn't appealing (beer and wine snob- can't be helped) but if you're staying there with friends, it would be a great jump off to other things to do that night. Then a great place to meet for the hangover breakfast.
Third, location is prime. It was a couple of blocks to Baywalk and Beach Dr. but not in the direct line of noise "fire". It's not on a quiet residential street but it's the best you're going to get in the area. On a nice night, you could probably walk the entire downtown area. It's an incredible location that's really close to everything.
Cons:
First, the wall unit AC. It never got cool in the room. It was warm the entire time. The ceiling fan didn't work much to cool off the room. I'm usually ok with warm but not in a hotel. Why was it cooler in the hallway than the room?
Second, the bathroom wasn't as clean as I had hoped. The bottom of the tub could have been cleaner. Also, the shower head probably needs to be replaced. Showers aren't places for "old charm". I just didn't feel like the room was that clean at all.
Third, security isn't that great. I had walked in after midnight from Baywalk and no one was at the desk. I just sauntered up to the third floor. Yikes!
Fourth, charm only goes so far. You could sink into the bed comfortably but when you sink into a bed so close to the floor, it's weird. It wasn't a hotel bed. It felt like I was staying at a friend's grandmother's house who probably doesn't use half the stuff in her home until guest come over. It's not a place to get too comfortable.
I've been spoiled by colder rooms in newer hotels. I tried the old charm once and I don't believe I will be returning. If you've never stayed at a renovated hotel, wait for the groupon and try it. If nothing else, the staff is terrific and the location is wonderful. -

It's been awhile since I stayed at The Pier Hotel, but I have nothing but fond memories.
This hidden gem is a perfect retreat for the travelers who want to stray from the norm and bypass all of those "chain" hotels.
Great location and within walking distance to many shops, bars, restaurants and of course, the pier!
The staff is super helpful and very friendly. When my boyfriend and I were checking in they accidentally lost our reservation, but to our surprise they upgraded up to a larger suite for free! Hello huge bed!!
Awesome happy hour with free wine and snacks and their breakfast is great.
I can't wait to go back! -

I stayed at this hotel for 1 hour it was so so so Bad! bugs, smell of smoke and sickness it was so old without any of the charm !! it was the front room I asked to be moved it was so bad they said it was sold out!!
I told Groupon about this and they gave me back 100% of my money!! -

What a "diamond in the rough" this little place is. It's very nostalgic in decor, and gives the feeling of how it was to stay in an upscale Hotel decades ago. It's very warm and inviting & the staff are superb. The free happy hour in the evening & continental breakfast in the morning are a nice touch. We will definitely stay here again & again!

I'm waffling between 3 and 4 stars. This is a solidly good small hotel, and most importantly, our room was cozy and comfortable. They offer free wireless (but it has limited range, and we had to go to the lobby to connect), a continental breakfast and happy hour each evening, plus parking. The guests are a mix of young, old, with a family here and there. Hotel staff were always very friendly and welcoming. The hotel is on the edge of a very nice downtown area and a not yet "revitalized" are that is sure to be much nicer in a while. This didn't limit our walking around or exploring, it's just something to be aware of if neighborhoods really matter for your trip. Overall, we thought this place was very good and we'd return if St. Petersburg is ever on our itinerary again.
