I love everything in all Pier 1 stores. I would live right in the damn show room if they would let me and be sure to lock the door when they left. Nowhere else can you find chic, urban, modern (yet still completely warm and homey) decorations so affordably? Nowhere, I tell you.
However, I love THIS Pier 1 most of all. The salespeople are helpful if you ask their opinion or a question about any product. I have actually given piss poor descriptions of things I saw on their website three months ago and desperately need to have, and still ended up with exactly the item I wanted.
The best part? They don't bother you. Touch every pillow. Lounge on every wicker setee. Sniff every candle. Take your damn time. And buy everything in the store because its all so. damn. cute.
A Pier One here is the same as a Pier One anywhere else. What sets apart one chain retail from it's twin brother a few miles away is SERVICE. The staff was incredibly kind and bent over backwards to make sure I found everything I needed. I felt like Mariah Carey, and Stephanie (the salesperson) was my personal shopper. I don't know why I said Mariah Carey, when I could've easily said Johnny Depp. And still, I name a guy who's kinda girly.
I'm totally torn on this review. There are the hard factors affecting it that make me want to give a flat out one star, but then there are also the soft factors that make me want to rave from the rooftops.
The soft factors, first...To mangle an already-abysmal song brought to us by the ever so talented Ms. Britney Spears, "I'm not a student, not yet a lawyer..." Translation: I'm in-limbo poor. Interpretation: I'm trying to furnish my apartment on the cheap while still appealing to my taste for pleasing aesthetics. And, yes, it's as hard as it sounds.
Anyway, the soft factors that would make me truly heart Pier 1 revolve around this in-limbo poor status. Using my ever-so-handy Discover card cashback bonus, I was able to acquire hundreds of dollars in gift cards from Pier 1 with which to purchase numerous furnishings. Yes, that was me you saw walking through the neighborhood with a 4' x 6' ebony jute rug. And the bags of crimson colored cloth napkins which I will turn into pillowcases. And the bag of mahogany-colored coasters. And the wooden picture frames. And the silver display tray into which I shall place glass stones of different colors. And the...well, you get the picture.
Another soft factor is the 15% discount they give when you flash your student ID. Okay okay, so I'm not QUITE a student, but I AM poor as one. And don't I technically still have student status until I actually start work? Semantics, I tell you.
The hard factors, however, that make me want to vomit are the prices of these things they're selling and the uppity persnickety unhelpful biatches who work there. Okay okay, so the prices aren't as exorbitant as, say, the Bombay Company right across the street. But STILL. For a store billing itself as student budget-friendly, it's really not. That $40 vase would easily be $9.99 in Chinatown if you hunted around enough. And that $120 mirror looks just like the one I saw at Ikea for $29.99. WTF, people.
And you! Yes, you in the black button down that you wore yesterday and the mountains of gold chains that make you look like Mr. T! Don't give me that look when I show up three days in a row! It's hard carrying all this crap up five flights of stairs! AND don't act like you're doing ME a favor by ringing up MY purchases so that I can fund YOUR hourly wage! Yes, I'm talking to you, Debra. YOU! I shake my fist at you!
Luckily, I have almost run out of (1) my gift cards and (2) the things that I would want to purchase at Pier 1. Although I am most grateful for the armsful of stuff that will make my place oh so dreamy, I am definitely happy to put the general experience of the store behind me. You are forewarned.
