(whining to Yelp staff) Can we get half stars...please?!
With a name like this, you KNOW it's gotta be good. This place is SO 4.5 stars! GREAT, authentic Mexican food. Some customers took me here for lunch when I was visiting, and O-M-G I've been dying to get back here! I tell all my San Antonio friends to go try the queso flambiado. What could possibly go wrong with greasy flaming cheese on a platter?!?!? mmmmmm.....can you say scorched tongue?
They serve these odd sounding "puffy tacos" that kinda look like the tortilla got a Botox injection...but taste SO good. Service was great, and when the hot little latina waitress found out I was visiting from out of town and LOVE authentic Mexican, she suggested several places to go for good Mex food. That'll be my next trip...

Great chicken mole! Usually pretty crowded for lunches, so go early.

Solid mexican restaurant. The beef puffy taco was exceptional and the chicken fajitas were also quite good. The seasoning was really good and the meat and vegetables weren't caked in grease like at most places. The tortillas were absolutely the best part of the meal. Freshly made and piping hot. They also brought enough tortillas to eat the entire plate of fajitas without asking for more. The only downsides to this place are that they don't make chips on saturday(?) so I was really disappointed that I didn't get to eat any chips, and no horchada. I highly recommend this place.
This restaurant was much bigger than I expected. While it was definitely not one of the many generic Americanized places, the food was not as authentic as I had hoped. The cheese enchiladas I ordered were pretty good, but also greasy. They do make their own tortillas though, and my husband really liked his chicken fajitas. They also have live music every Saturday around lunchtime.
I have been going to Piedras Negras 18 years and it is my absolute favorite. I live on the north side, so it is a little trip for me to get there, but it is worth the trip. I love everything on the menu, from the ladies plate, to the gorditas, to the hoarche, and cabrito. Their tortillas are wonderful. It may not look like much from the outside, but the food is outstanding. No liquor or beer, but in the past, they have let you bring your own, if you must have some with your meal. Be prepared to wait in line on the weekend as it is a well-known, local place - hot spot south of downtown.
This is the only place that my grandmother, God rest her soul, would eat Mexican food if she wasn't cooking. I was raised on the Southside on the "real thing," if you will, and few restaurants come close to my Abuelita's home cooking. Piedras Negras has, by far, come the closest.
The chalupas still haven't got the creamy bean goodness that 'Buelita somehow managed on hers, but let me tell you, compared to the fast food, pseudo-ethnic foods out there right now... this place is a winner, hands down. Just make sure you get there fairly early on Fridays and Saturday nights, because the locals know where to go for the authentic stuff, and we're forming a line by 7 p.m. to get a table. Enjoy!

You won't find better Mexican food in town than in this place. Plain and simple. My wife and her mother introduced me to this place 4 years ago, and all other places don't even come close. If their cooking here is made with ingredients others would consider life-threatening or detrimental to their health, so be it. I usually get the platter with cheese enchiladas, refried beans, rice, and a chalupa. The guacamole is made perfectly, flavored with just a touch of lime and garlic and straight out of the avocado shell. Only downside to this place: the restaurant does not have a liquor license and there are no alcoholic beverages and have to get them from the icehouse across the parking lot. But the food is so good you don't need it.
