quiet, eerily quiet.
parking is always available...
tho can still smell smoke in restrooms tho you can no longer smoke there...strange.
Ah, home - the Piedmont International Airport. Almost as lifeless as the city while you're asleep. Yet I love de-planing, entering the airport to be greeted by.... nobody. Nobody in the joint, save for a few roaming janitors. I love airports and I love that no one is in this airport - makes for serenity tinged with a little sadness.
Cigarette smoke still lingers from the days one could puff away while they waited. It gives a ghost-town feel - what once was, no longer. Looking around there's stretches of trees and the hilly countryside of the Greensboro outskirts. Even the shoe-shine man isn't in business today. Country music pours from the staticky speakers: Went down yonder on a Chatahoochee, it gets hotter than a hoochie coochie...
No fancy restaurants here. PTI is all business, all Burger King. It's North Carolina, baby. You gotta love it.
I've never had any major problems flying into GSO. Parking is close and safe. There are nice tram drivers who'll take you straight to the door, and if it's late when you get back, they'll drop you right off at your car and watch to make sure you're safe getting into your car and pulling away.
The security people are always friendly, even while digging through my purse trying to find my lighter and other illegal items I attempt to sneak on.
I've never had major delays either.
Only one complaint: I get so incredibly lost and confused when I'm driving to pick someone up at their airport. Plus, there are two levels, and I've never figured out how to get from the top to the bottom without having to leave the whole area completely and try again. Plus, they were doing construction for a couple of years, so they had one of the entrances closed off. Once, it probably took me a good 35 minutes to get where I was trying to be.
A decent experience flying into GSO - the car rental options is what gives this place one less star, but overall, getting there - I like how the car rental lots are right there at the airport and you don't have to bother with shuttles.
One less star for lack of signage pointing us to the car rental return. However, four stars for good food, great bar, friendly staff, and best of all - when our flight was delayed 4.5 hours, the staff was very friendly and we were able to bump airlines to hop on an earlier flight back home to Chicago.
My favorite airport. There's never a delay taking off. There's never a delay landing. There are never any lines, never any wait at security.
It's 25.1 miles from my house, and I can get from home to the airport, park, walk to the counter, check in, get through security and have a drink in the US Airways Club in 35 minutes. This just doesn't happen anywhere else.
4.5 stars...
small nice; no delay. the rental car place, onsite, gave me a free upgrade. there's something pleasant about this area in general and it's reflected in the airport. flew in on allegiantairlines, which actually went super as well...super cheap too.
got my latte, my last chance before leaving civilization, and my rental and was on my way.
nothing modern or engaging about the building design... have to pay for wi-fi and the food options are lacking and expensive. Flying rates are subpar and almost 1/2 the time your are crammed up in little commuter jets.
parking is good and it's not a busy airport - then again, it's the Triad.
I flew in and out of this airport several times. It's the biggest in about 200 miles, so it gets a lot of traffic. Still, it was never difficult to get through security, either before or right after Sept. 11. There was always plenty of parking available, too.
