Yum, yum, yum! was all I was thinking bout when I took each bite of my cheeseburger.

Review from Kevin T.
After many people suggested, nay, demanded that I check out an established that prides itself on serving both pies AND burgers I decided 9am on a Sunday was a proper time.
While most people were probably sleeping, I was starving and so I made the short little trek out to Pasadena.
It turns out they'll serve you a burger before lunch time, but no fries. Darn oh well.
It was a good burger, I'll give it that. Despite the fact that it didn't even remotely resemble the requested medium rare, it was juicy where it should be juicy and crisp where it should be crisp. Adding tomato seems like it was a good call.
They have the sort of service that is wonderfully curt--the dinerno-nonsense kind of attitude. Meanwhile everyone around me was having omelettes and pancakes and I had a cheeseburger. Or at least I meant to have a cheeseburger, but they forgot the cheese.
That said it was tasty, and the dressing is amazing, but my final word might be that for what I got it was a bit overpriced. With tax and tip and hamburger (no cheese or fries remember) ran me $12. Oof.
I might still recommend Russell's on Fair Oaks over it (as someone who has had a burger there at breakfast as well, WITH fries even). And we won't even begin to discuss my problem with burgers for breakfast.
We could discuss the problem of parking here--it was a little tricky even though it wasn't that busy. Breakfast after all.
Maybe they have spectacular pies? -

There's a good burger here somewhere, but it's swimming in thousand island sauce and hard to fully enjoy. I could tell that the meat was something special, but I just couldn't get through to it. It's satisfying by technicality, but from what I've heard about Pie 'n Burger having one of the best burgers in the LA area I'm not impressed.
I'll grant that the ambiance is very charming. Almost everything in the restaurant could pass for a historical artifact. The staff here doesn't even use a calculator to figure out sales tax, instead consulting a chart on the wall.
I'm willing to give Pie 'n Burger another shot to win me over, but for now I'm going to stick with the conceptually similar but ultimately superior Apple Pan. -

STOP! DO NOT BELIEVE THE HYPE! The burgers are TERRIBLE and the pie is WORSE!
Why do people still go here? I know why I went against my will... peer pressure. That and stupidity. "Oh look," he says, "Pie n Burger won Favorite Lunch Counter Burger and Favorite Traditional Burger in the Pasadena Cheeseburger week poll. We should go." "Popularity polls are completely bogus," I reply. "I've been there, Pie n Burger is horrible." Then the rhetorical arm twisting starts accompanied by more verbal jabs. In the end, instead of resorting to physical blows, I relent. I'm stupid. I should have punched him in the face. Then we wouldn't have gone. Better yet, I should have asked to have been punched in the face. Then I wouldn't have been able to put that awful thing they call a burger in my mouth. A trip to the hospital would have been better. Seriously, this is ONE OF THE WORST BURGERS IN PASADENA and probably the entire County of Los Angeles.
Combine this with the cash only register, street parking, inept (but friendly) staff, and the overall film on every horizontal surface in the restaurant and you too will wish you went to the hospital instead. If you ignore my advice and eat at Pie n Burger, you probably will want to go to a hospital as soon as you leave.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Oh my god how is it I only heard of this place during Pasadena's hamburger week & not before?!?!! This place will set the bar for burgers, chili & pies! The chili is amazing! I took my slice of pie to go since we were way too full to eat it there. It was the best chocolate merengue pie besides my moms. You can tell it was made from scratch. You can go in a group but tables are really limited as the place is small inside however there is plenty of seats at the counter. Parking wasn't the best, don't park in back unless you have 2 people to help guide you out of a spot that's in between a dumpster & a small wall, even if you are a great driver.

Old School burger diner with fantastic burgers and pie. A must try, it's a real visit to yesterday's burger diner. Not the cleanest place but I think that's because it's so worn and a bit tacky. service is so-so.

Review from Andy O.
Woah. Walking into this place felt like something out of a movie about white people who live in towns where they've never seen anything but other white people. Perhaps not too surprisingly, the crowd was entirely white as well. The register, with those huge buttons that have to be pressed like two feet down to punch in a number, was so white it scared me a little bit.
But don't let that scare you. They didn't get all KKK-white on me. Everybody was friendly. By that I mean that the waitress who took our order was very friendly, and nobody tried to shoot me or ask me why I had no blonde hair or what part of "Charna" I was from.
The food was decent. The burger was surprisingly good, but a bit overpriced for what you get. No gourmet nonsense, just a good, white, American burger. The patty melt was pretty good too. So were the fries and the macaroni salad. All in all, a decent meal, but just lacking that "something special" that us social-networking-generation kids have come to feel like we're entitled to. If you're looking for something "American", and don't want any frills or nonsense, give it a try.
I find it funny when restaurants have big, framed articles from random magazines and publications they've been mentioned in. Especially when they're from the nineties, or from Citysearch. Who uses Citysearch anymore? (Pie 'n Burger has these. Read 'em while you're there.) -

What can I say about this yummy burger joint? Awesome! I think this is in my top 5 of best burgers I've had. The fries are delicious and yes, I had a piece of pie. The only thing keeping from 5 stars you may ask? Well, we are in the 21st century and this place is cash only. I dont know about you, but just about every one I know doesnt keep cash on hand anymore (just a thought).

I asked for a burger with bacon, lettuce and tomato. What I was given was a BLT sandwich, no burger, no patty. I normally love BLT sandwiches, but it wasn't what I ordered and wasn't good. The quality of the ingredients were so-so and the bacon was overcooked, jerky-like and had some very hard bits. I had to check to make sure I didn't chip a tooth when I crunched down on one of the bard bits.
I was recommended the macaroni salad as a side but it was an odd orangeish color and wasn't particularly tasty.
I asked for a lemonade. It was tiny.
For about $11, not worth it. Ernie's taco truck has a better BLT+avocado burger for $4, plus drink, $5. -

This is an old-fashioned burger joint with good burgers, bad fries and worse servers.
I went there on a gut feeling. I was passing by and the name stood up so I decided to give it a go. I sat at the counter and asked politely for a menu. The server pointed at the wall and mumbled "that's it" while filling my cup with water and spilling a little in the process...almost as to create that feeling of a no-fuss, old-fashioned place. I was fine with that, but I insisted to get a written menu as it was dark, I didn't have my glasses with me and my poor eyes couldn't quite read from that distance. I guess people with less than perfect eyesight are not very welcomed here since what I got in return was a deep sigh and a sour face from the lady who served that day. She did throw a written menu in my direction 2 minutes later.
In terms of food, the burger was nicely cooked and tasty. No fancy toppings or anything, just a simple cheeseburger cooked right. The fries were terrible tho, no taste whatsoever, not even salty enough. I can't speak for anything else since this are the only things I've tried.
Won't be back, the burger alone is not worth it. It's good, but far from outstanding. -

It's hard to rate a restaurant 4 when you want to give it a 3... but here it goes:
The first time we came here we fell in L O V E with these burgers, they are highly addictive. There's always a line so prepare yourself to wait until you get seated. Burgers are amazing, I don't know if its the quality of the meat, how they cook it, the cheese, the bun, or all together but these things are worth the drive to Pasadena if you don't live around here. Pies are really good too and they are made fresh.
The reason why I want to consider giving them a 3 is their prices. Yes its a landmark, yes, we should all come here one day, yes burgers are to die for. But too expensive... specially the fries. I get that the burger has this price tag due to being "famous" but not that tiny plate of fries.
We have tried their breakfast as well, everything here is delicious.
BIG TIP: You need to bring CASH - or a check, they take either, no debit card.
and parking can be tricky... -

This review is for the two pies my daughter and I shared: coconut meringue and boysenberry. I haven't tried anything else here.
This is an unassuming place in Pasadena. It's by Fresh and Easy on Lake and California. I knew of this place, and decided to take my daughter here on a Friday afternoon to satiate her sweet tooth.
Both of the pies were very good, and you know what? They're $3.85! The boysenberry pie had the perfect union of tart and sweet with plenty of boysenberries. The crust was light and flaky. The coconut meringue was also impressive. My daughter is a connoisseur of desserts. She said she would return here. -

A great burger. No doubt about it. But In-N-Out has a great burger, their double double, and it's less than half the price of this one. The great irony here is that everything is 1950's--everything is homemade and tastes great. Even the sodas are handmade with coke syrup and tonic water. Even the waitress is still here from the fifties, though she's about eighty now. And, service is like the 50's, they act a little pissed off that you walked into their restaurant, so they'll just do their job and not one bit more. Here's the irony. The only thing that's not 1950's is the price. The prices are like 2020. $3.75 for a handful of fries is thievery. A cheeseburger, fries, soda, and a pie ala mode with tip/tax will cost you over $20. That's what I expect a burger to cost in 10 years!

I am going to give this place a very high 4 stars. The reason I am knocking off a point is because i was not impressed with the guys on the grill and their mis-timed service.. Sure they made what I think is the best tasting burger in town, but I was not moved by their blank expressions and lack of enthusiasm.
Some may find this quality endearing for an old school diner, but I am at the age now I expect people - especially people I am eating with - to warm up a bit. I am tired of the indifferent attitude.
The waitress who took our order was at least 80 years old but she was nice enough and was prompt and business like when she asked us what we wanted and dropped off our food a few minutes later.
My second complaint is against their fries. You would think that a place has what is perhaps one of the best burgers would have the best French fries.. Uh... No! Their fries came out over cooked and lacking any real flavor. In my opinion the management may be overlooking this issue because they think we won't notice. Wrong!
Get it right Pie and burger. Your service is not the best and your cute retro vibe can only last for so long.
I like this place and will go back to try their chicken pot pie. They were huge and looked reallllly good and in time I may forget the grumpy guys at the grill.
Two Hoots with a little hesitation.

i love love love love love love love love love Pie 'n Burger!!!
Most places are hit or miss with hole in the wall burger spots, but folks take note. If you can see their kitchen, that's a good sign, if you can see their grill and it looks ANCIENT, even better. This is my theory with dive-y burger spots, they might use thawed frozen patties, but as long as that girl looks OLD, flat top or charbroiler.. the burger/food will be GOOD.
I always just get a regular cheeseburger with grilled onions, side of fries and a fresh made SODA, yes fresh. Soda water + the syrup right there at the counter.
If you're looking for good pies, you're also in luck, they make a killer Banana Cream, which you should always purchase at the end, take it home, digest, and then later when you're craving that sweetness, dig in.
CASH ONLY! so be prepared for that! -

2. Featured on Huell Houser
3. Old school food
= WIN
FOOD:
The food is pretty good. It reminds me of the old school 50s diners that I don't remember because I was not born yet.
Turkey Burger - I love the fact they have a turkey burger instead of just beef. I got the Turkey cheesebuger all the time. It's the best. The grilled onions and everything. This burger is yummy!
Tuna Melt - it's ok. Lots of tuna but it's good protein!
Pies: I've had their pies and they are famous for it. I love the seasonal - peach! Mmmm... Banana Cream is always a good choice.
SERVICE:
Really depends. It's these older women who kinda treat you like their kids. I've had a woman called me "kid" before. I'm 27... but yeah I'm Asian so I do look kiddish.
It's a hit or miss. Sometimes they are so busy that they kinda pass you by but when it's not, it's nice.
AMBIANCE:
Small place. Don't expect a big party here. This is good for SMALL groups. It gets loud too. So SMALL ONLY.
NOTES:
* Cash (and checks) Only
* Parking sucks! Good luck!

Ahh, I dunno. I was kinda excited to go to Pie 'n Burger after hearing that it is one of Pasadena's hot spots if you are a burger fan. Well, the place as expected is a traditional burger joint with some bar seats and a couple of tables on the side. For the ones who are looking for a fancy hangout spot this would not be the place. You go here for the food and you pay- a lot. A simple and very small sized cheeseburger costs almost 8 bucks. Like I said, if you come with a huge appetite, one portion might not be enough; but damn it was DELICIOUS. Fresh and very creamy, they really did not skimp on the thousand island.
Still, the place gets only three stars because of the employers' attitude. They give you the vibe since you come in that you don't belong, or that you might not pay. I am not a too sensitive person when it comes to someone's attitude, but wow if eyes could kill. Enjoy your burger and run. -

Los Angeles, CA
Solid cheeseburgers, messy, with crisp lettuce and quality-tasting beef. Good grilled onions. This place is more of an old-school joint, with simple burgers that come wrapped in paper. Imagine the In-N-Out style burger with thicker patties and you're approaching the Pie And Burger way of doing things.
Best burger in LA? Nope. I can think of at least 4 places on the westside that have this beat. But one of top 5 in Pasadena, for sure.
Fries are pretty average and under-salted - nothing to get excited about here. Sodas here are made by swishing syrup into carbonated water, which doesn't taste terrible, but means that sometimes you get a really watered-down tasting soda.
Pies, on the other hand, are all pretty delicious, especially the berry ones, with a hefty serving of ice cream should you choose to go a la mode. The boysenberry pie is fantastic and worth the trip alone.
Prices here aren't amazingly affordable - a burger, fries, soda, and pie plus tip is going to set you back around $20. There are cheaper ways to get full in Pasadena, that's for sure.
Waitstaff is fine - busy, and you might need to flag them down occasionally, but not mean or anything. It's a burger joint, man.
Burgers being a big thing in LA, I can see why this place might get tagged as overrated. The prices aren't all that great and the burger, while delicious, isn't particularly unique. Ambience straddles the line between Apple Pan, old school charming and just plain beaten up and worn out.
Still, this is a Pasadena landmark that serves a damn tasty burger and is worth at least one trip, if not a few. -

Soooooo freaking good!!!
THE ORDER:
Turkey Cheeseburger...5 stars... simple and delicious: cooked perfectly, toasted bun, pungent onions, delicious homemade thousand island, sour pickles, crunchy lettuce, and it was the perfect size! It was so basic, yet delicious (and they don't skimp on the goods!).
French Fries....4 stars....Damn good! very crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Yummy!!! FYI: you can order a half order of fries, but \why would u want to?
Side Salad....3 stars...Kinda weird, but also simple. It was chopped crunchy iceberg, tomatoes, red cabbage, & dill pickle slices (???). I mean, it was pretty lame, but their homemade sour-cream based ranch dressing was the bomb.
THE SERVICE:
Uhhhh, honest, to the point, wildly unprofessional :) and friendly.
OVERALL:
This meal was so satisfying with the hit-the-nail-on-the head simplicity.
I am def going back next time I want a real, American back-to-basics burger and fries combo. I cannot WAIT to taste their pies!!!
I DEF RECOMMEND TO YELPERS !!
I WILL BE BACK!!

Review from Kevin L.
The best thing about Pie and Burger is the name.
We came here over a decade ago and didn't think much of it. Today, I decided to give it another try, thinking "maybe they're better now?" After all, they almost rate 4 stars on yelp.
The hamburger was the most un-beefy burger I've ever had. I couldn't figure out if the blandness of the patty was from just low-grade meat, or a combination of low-grade meat and fillers. Whatever it is, it's far from anything one would call "fresh" or "quality".
The breakfast and kid's items were no better. A TV special on avoiding low-grade bacon came to mind as I watched one of my kids eat. The hashbrowns were pressed and burned and tasted of something other than potatoes. The pancakes were, at least, edible.
I would rate the food 2 stars, but the exorbitant price and the really shoddy service, along with the "cash only" policy seems to paint a pretty dismal picture of decades of gouging customers with a high-price for bad quality fare.
There's no excuse for that now. I will not pay for crap and like it. -

Old school diner that really does it right! When you walk into Pie 'n Burger you are transported back to the old diner days. I mean, I really felt like Marty McFly would burst in at any second.
My visit to Pie 'n Burger was for one reason... to sample the aforementioned burger.
THE FOOD
The Cheese Burger - 4 out of 5 - The burger was simple yet perfect. The patty was perfectly cooked and seasoned, the bun had a nice toast and the homemade thousand island had a nice tang. Very well done old school burger.
Side order of Fries - 3 out of 5 - Very solid fries, but nothing mind blowing.

double cheeseburger, plate full of fries, and then a dutch apple pie topped with two scoops of ice cream = death to my arteries but so damn delicious.
I love this place. I walk in, grab a seat at the counter, give thw waitress my order, and watch the cook prep my burger. As I take the last bite of my burger, the attentive waitress hands me a menu of pies and cakes and gives me the rundown on what's fresh. Top that off with 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream and I've just single-handedly destroyed my past 3 months of working out in one meal.
Fucking worth it. -

Get a burger/cheeseburger, and don't be afraid of the dressing they put on it. Just order it as it comes and you'll really enjoy it. Don't waste your time on french fries, they are nothing special. Plus, you must, absolutely must order a slice of pie. The pie menu is outstanding, and the pies do not disappoint. Small joint, so either go on an off night or be ready to wait. Worth it.

The name of this place alone makes me think this should be a mecca for awesome pies and burgers. This isn't a fancy sit down gastropub style place at all. Just a long counter and a couple of tables where you can have your choices of burgers and pies. I liked the simplicity of that but I was really underwhelmed with the burger there. I've forgotten how much it was, but I felt like for the price I paid, I could've gotten a better burger at In-N-Out. If I was rating the place on the burger alone, this place would be two stars, but I'm adding the extra star because of that pie and ice cream. I think the pie I had was boysenberry and that was a perfect slice of pie and the ice cream really tasted like homemade vanilla ice cream that was to die for. And I'm not big on vanilla ice cream, but Pie 'n Burger's is fantastic. If I wanted to have good pie and ice cream, I would gladly go there again.

Los Angeles, CA
The cheeseburger is just plain delicious here as are the french fries. The food is simple, no frills grub. If you can get past the fact that the tables, counter and floor are always sticky and dirty (apparently this doesn't matter to the health dept), the food is great. Save room for a slice of pie or plan on sharing it with someone because their pies are great too. The Butterscotch Pie is wickedly sweet and decadent, the apple pie ala mode is one of the best, and the cheese cake (which used to be referred to as cheese pie but it must have confused people) is so rich and worth every calorie.

The Good: I thought the food (cheeseburger n pie) were absolutely delicious! Free Wifi was nice too.
The Bad: the service left little to be desired. Took a long time to get service, I tried to get a chair for my table and the waitress literally snarled at me and gave me another chair....later to find out it was her chair to sit in. Cokes we're excellent, but the serving size was incredibly small.
The Ugly: 3 burgers, I slice of pie...$47!

The Zagat awards and clippings should have been my first warning. But i had heard that this place was good. So i gave it a chance. I got a burger to go. You would think that a place with "burger" in the title would make a half decent burger..... It was bland, the lettuce was ice burger, the "grilled" onions were like eating stringed hair. The thousand island dressing made the wonder bread style buns soggy and fell apart as i ate it. It was worse then eating at McDonalds. There's no grilled flavor, the burgers ARE just as small as McDoanald's double cheese burgers.
6.75 for a weak ass lowest quality burger you can find. -
Review from Lawrence L.
Covina, CA
This place sort of belongs in a fairy tale: Once upon a time, there was terrific little place in Pasadena, the one that every local knew about called Pie 'n Burger. It was known for, what else, it's fabulous homemade pies and big juicy burgers. It was the original, iconic, greasy spoon, hole-in-the-wall local burger joint. It still has that 60's long counter that many a patron has sat at where you were served cheerfully by waitresses with the same kind of hop-to-it attitude as that of a full service gas station...
The place looks pretty much the same as when I started coming back in the late 80's, but it has lost much of its glimmer as the layers of dust and grease pile on one year after the next. The once friendly place where people come for a cup of coffee and a slice of pie has become a place where everyone is older, a little less open minded, and more set in their ways...
Take the menu for example: http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Does anyone ever order quiche from these guys anymore?...
I use to come here because I remembered that I liked their Ham and Eggs breakfast. The ham used to be a really good half inch thick ham shank steak that was grilled until is was just glistening, and it had that salty goodness that was delicious when topped with a couple of soft sunny side eggs, and crispy buttered slices of toast. The hash browns were golden browned crispy on the outside, but fluffy and hot on the inside...
Today, the same dish has only a small semblance to its former splendor:
http://www.yelp.com/bi...
The ham is much thinner and because of that, it's substantially dryer and a little more singed on the edges. The same is true of the over easy eggs, the edges show signs of being overcooked and a bit rubbery. The hash browns were probably frozen, that's why the outside is black instead of golden brown while the inside is still white and slightly undercooked. The toast is even a little burnt...
I was in the area probably going by memory of a better time when this place was good for breakfast, a time when there was once a Bullock's on Lake and a Robinson's on Colorado. Sadly, I think those days are over... -

Monterey Park, CA
I appreciate the general classic style diner that this place is, but I think they could do a little better.
FOOD QUALITY:
The food tastes great here, but there are certain peculiar things that prevent me from giving them a higher rating. The patty is definitely of higher quality meat, however the way they cook is leaves it drenched in a lot of unnecessary oil. The buns are quite a delight as they are soft on one side, yet crisp on the other side. The toppings are only okay, as my lettuce wasn't so fresh and the dressing was pretty standard. The burger as a whole was pretty good, just that it tastes better than how it looked. For the price of seven dollars for a cheeseburger though, I'm not sure if it's worth the 20 minute drive to Pasadena for this.
The pie itself was good. While I do not eat pies too much, I felt satisfied as having that pie as my dessert. The vanilla ice cream, however, had a really nice vanilla pang that made the ice cream taste wonderful. The texture of the ice cream was standard, however.
SERVICE:
Service was actually a delight as our waitress was very friendly and cheerful. She was easy to flag and also talk to, as she made jokes and made us feel as if we were at home.
ENVIRONMENT:
This place felt a little too narrow for my tastes as I didn't feel like I had enough room while sitting on a table to the side. The ambiance is quite relaxing though, and even with an open kitchen it wasn't too loud.
Overall, I like this place but I'm unsure if it's something that I want to come back to based on the quality against price and distance. While it may be a small town classic kind-of-deal, I feel that there are other places that easily outperforms this restaurant. -

I came to this place because of the positive reviews and pictures, but after eating there i was not satisfied. The burgers are not bad but not great, i guess they are ok tasting. They are pretty messy to eat the bread started falling apart and was soaked in spread. The meat was fairly greasy. The waiter brought me and my friend a cup of water while waiting on my order and in the end i was charged for it. I was shocked in all the place i go out and eat, the water is always FREE but this place for some reason charges for water. Also they only accept cash which is a pain because who carries cash now a days, everyone pays with plastic.
Also i think their food is over priced the burgers are small and simple to cost about $6-8. In that case go to Hamburger Hamlet up the street and get your moneys worth!! -

Worth the drive. An absolute throwback. For what you get, prices are a little lofty but the ambiance and service make up for that.

I come here a lot with the work bff for lunch, but strangely enough, I don't eat burgers or pies! However, though the name might suggest those are the only menu items, they are not.
PROS:
-The ambiance: This place is a true diner. You sit at a counter, swivel in a chair, and watch the fry cook flip your food around. My favorite thing about the entire place is the TV in the back. They show old black and whites, which is worth an extra star in my book. One time we watched most of "It Happened One Night." I fell in love with Pie n' Burger after that day.
-The service: What I really love about the servers is their customer service. They're quick, attentive, and funny. No matter your request, they just say, "I can do that".
- The food: OK, so what if I don't order a burger.... I can still rate the food! I order a simple grilled cheese and it's nothing spectacular. BUT, I swear the Strawberry Cake is orgasmic, it takes me 15 minutes to eat because I savor every single bite. The root beer float is ridiculously delicious. And the fries are the perfect ratio of crispiness to softness.
CONS:
- It's expensive. $7.50 for a grilled cheese sandwich I can make at home?
- The soda is strange. They give you a cup with syrup and soda water. You mix it yourself and it tastes like crap. -

I'll make this as simple as possible:
Burger: Buttered and toasted bun, grilled onions, lettuce, Thousand Island and cheese. Not bad, but not great either. Have I had better? Yes, at other restaurants and when we have BBQs at friends' houses.
Fries: Not even worth mentioning.
Hash browns: No different than any other hash browns you've had.
Pies: Butterscotch Meringue (very rich) and the Boysenberry were both good. Not phenomenal, but good.
Basically, I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again.
