What can I say? Everything is good here -- EVERYthing. And that is unfortunate because I can never decide. It's so tiny. How do they pack so much goodness into one tiny space? And the staff is really friendly, too. I just love it.
If I owned a bakery, it would be just like this place. Maybe in my next life. Stay tuned.
Nothing too special about Pie In the Sky, other than the fact that considering their name, I was disappointed that they didn't have any more pies than they did.
The selection was pretty nice having it has Cannolies, gigantic cookies, fudge, pieces of cake, and other nice baked goods. All the prices weren't too bad either.
The location of Pie In The Sky is really nice on the street right above the water. Maybe it being near the water was the inspiration for their wide selection of smoothies and other fruity drinks.
The service was friendly, and the outdoor seating area was nice and comfortable.
Though it was nice, the small size of inside the Bakery-like structure was a little off-putting.
But with that left behind it, Pie In The Sky is a nice hole-in-the-wall bakery right in the heart of the Cape.
Have you ever tried a popover sandwich? Yum. You should here.
I hate to be the only downer on Pie in the Sky, but it's a pretty lousy place for vegetarians. The croissants looked good, but unfortunately all but the plain were made with meat. I've heard their sandwiches are great, but they only have one vegetarian option, which is a wrap full of cheap veggies that was bland and not filling. Basically I could have saved myself $6 by putting a McDonald's salad in a tortilla.
If you're veg, skip the sandwich and try a sweet pastry or soup instead.
I have loved Pie in the Sky for years! The popovers, the chocolate croissants, and the BLTs will keep me a repeat customer for years to come. The place is a hole in the wall (quite literally) but they do remarkable business and have incredible variety. I have been bowled over by the pastries and hot drinks in past years and while my most current experiences have fallen slightly below my expectations, it could just be an off week. It's a great place for breakfast and/or a great place to grab a snack while waiting for the Martha's Vineyard ferry...it's right by the terminal!
The baked goods are really first rate (I'm particularly fond of the popovers and the bread pudding), though the croissants make it pretty clear that the baker(s) aren't going for light and fluffy. Coffee is mediocre and espresso drinks show up weak but only after an eternity.
Lunch sandwiches are okay and priced reasonably.
Having observed the manager/owner abusing his staff on several occassions, I've decided he's a complete asshole. Watch for the faded sox cap, graying goatee and ever-present sneer.
Still no recycling.
We stopped in there for iced tea/coffee and a snack during our travels in Woods Hole. The service was friendly, and it was a comfortable funky place. The patio is really nice. We also split an apple bear claw and it was DELICIOUS.
We came here twice, once before taking the ferry to the Vineyard, and once after. I don't know about you, but when I'm travelling, I like some cheap, filling fare, and it doesn't really get better than this. Contrary to their name, they not only serve pastries (to DIE for - get the apricot bars, which are GIANT and stuffed with yummy apricot filling) but pretty good wraps. Their guacamole is actually quite good and goes well with their deli meat wraps. One of my friends got the black bean soup and raved about it as well.
I didn't try the coffee (not much of a coffee drinker), but they have a very large selection of different blends from all over the world listed on their blackboard above the counter.
The shop is pretty tiny and there's not much seating inside, but there's an outside patio area. Staff are very friendly!
Totally fabulous ubiquitous coffee shop.
They also have pies and sandwiches.
Excellent coffee and cookies. Maybe they are partially responsible the output of WHOI.
one ceremonial computer monitor
If only they had a bigger space there'd probably be a talented acoustical guitarist on site.
This place literally saved my life, suffering from 20 hrs of sleep in 4 days ( I was in a wedding) Pie in the sky was my life line, I survived on their chai latte and OMG the chocolate croissant is the best I've ever had.
I would leave Starbucks in a heart beat, if this place was on ever block in the city. I guess I will just have to settle for every couple of years to get my fix!
I miss you PIE IN THE SKY!
This place makes a solid sandwich, and their rye bread is great. The servings are generous and the service is friendly. I wish I'd thought to grab some napkins to throw in my takeout bag (they don't stick any in there by default), but my sandwich wasn't as messy as I thought it would be.
Get the apricot bar. Get a sandwich.
If you can, try to eat it on the ferry (if you can wait that long... it's an excruciating less-than-a-minute walk to the terminal with so much delicious food in your hands).
Do it. Thank me later.
The best Key Lime Pie I've had since Florida! Pie in the Sky is your typical coffee shop cafe with sandwiches, baked goods, coffee drinks, and tea. The iced tea was superb, but packed with a bit too much ice. I was told the coffee was good as well.
The interior isn't very cozy but is more than adequate for a quick bite to eat - just not the kind of place you'd want to hang out. Luckily there are ample nearby places in Woods Hole to sit and enjoy your prizes. Pie in the Sky is open 24 hours a day during the summer months which is totally awesome.
The owner of this business actually contacted me because he found my coffee-shop web site (click in my profile to see that). I am glad he did, because this truly is an outstanding shop. The location is in one of the most exquisite sea-side villages in New England. The food is fresh, delicious, and healthy. And the coffee is from Deans Beans -- one of the very best coffee roasters in the world.
We went on a cold day when the interior was cozy but not crowded. I can just picture how busy this place must get in the summer, when crowds are stopping on their way to the Martha's Vineyard ferry (right next door).
Holy sandwiches, Batman!
A few of my mates and I stopped here before venturing off the Cape and back to our severely-lacking-in-beachy-goodness lives. The sandwiches (while a tad pricier than I had hoped) were great. The bread (fresh baked, I believe) was crunchy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside. I got the turkey with avocado. Can't mess that up.
The icing on the cake (er, I mean PIE) however, was their cookies. I think the one I ordered was called a "Mountain" Cookie, which basically stands for, "Let's see how much yumminess we can cram into one bite" Cookie. From oats to chocolate to raisins to coconut to walnuts... it was fan-freakin'-tabulous.
Woods Hole is lovely, too. Obviously fancy-schmantzy, but a great place to bike to and walk around.
My dad would con me into biking from Falmouth to Woods Hole with the promise of a treat from Pie in the Sky. Needless to say it usual worked in getting my lazy bum off the couch.
It's fairly small but they have both indoor and outdoor seating in the summer so it usually isn't difficult to find somewhere to sit.
The staff is friendly and the food is wonderful. A vast assortment of baked goodies to choose from, made fresh every day! Personally though, my favorite thing was always the soup, which changes from day to day as well. No matter what it was, it was always flavorful and delicious.
Parking sucks, but then it's Woods Hole, parking is always terrible. Better to bike, or walk, or take the trolley in the summer.
A great place to stop at when you are waiting around for the ferry!
Every self-respecting tourist town in New England seems to have one safe haven among the scary indigestion-inducing overpriced tourist traps, and this is Woods Hole's.
Love love love this place. Great coffee, pastries, soup and sadnwiches. The plum tomato bisque and butternut squash soup are delicious.
A great place to get lunch to go (seating is very limited, especially during summertime and pretty much all the time except for Sunday afternoons). Coffee is good too. I think they still have a deal every Thursday--any size coffee for 65 cents.
The owner is super nice and the staff is friendly.
Name = sort of a turnoff for me, but hell I can forgive that
Clientele = crunchy bio students and artists, some yuppies
Food = well priced and really, really good. tried the squash soup and the BLT both worth a follow up visit to have again
Coffee = can't beat it, sort of like Green Mountain
Price = as good as it's gonna get on the cape
Location = in tight quartered Woods Hole center, convenient to ferries etc
I have lived half the week on Martha's Vineyard in the past several years. And, having 15 min rush to this bakery before getting on the ferry was often fun. But less often nowadays.
Wonder Bar, Apricot Bar are my favorite but you see your belly fat getting thicker after every visit you pay. Instead, the smiling young staff behind the counter and in the kitchen are the true gems in this place, well, at least before you enter the Steamship Authority Zone to deal with the rough mobs in the uniforms,eh, say, half of them? Also, you will realize that the all year rounder on MV are a bit weird after a while. So, Pie in the Sky is my last real world before entering the labyrinth.
Ever since the terminal has opened a lousy snack shop, less passengers seem to use this venue than before. But having Bank of America in the same building, I still try to go to get some decent breads.
You can sit there waiting for your bus or the ferry with a simple sandwich/salad and a hot choc. The Terminal has a limited sitting space and if you don't drink a beer, this bakery is the alternative to kill your time waiting for the ferry.
Fatty pastries 3.5 out of 5, the friendliness is 5/5. The price is quite good too. You don't get any decent bread once you are on the island, and you should order your own here before you get to Woods hole. I don't think they do Birthday cakes though.
I fly in from Los Angeles to eat the popover and plum tomato soup. This place is the real deal -- an honest-to-goodness old-fashioned bakery. Great coffee, great people working here. If only the line were a bit shorter in the summer.
This place is lovely. It has this great seaside, homey appeal. There are tables inside and outside, with this swinging screen door to separate them (makes it feel more like a neighbourhood joint). And you can see the bay from the windows inside. They have good coffee (Dean's Beans! Organic and socially conscious!), and their brew of the week is ONLY 65cents. You can't beat that.
My absolute favourite thing they make is the bread pudding, and this is why they get their 5 stars. It's HUGe and comes with this very rummy rum sauce, that manages to be fairly light, considering. And on the matter of the bread pudding itself? Well, the edges tend to be a bit burnt, but I can forgive that after just one bite of this humongously delicious item. It is perfectly dense and moist, without being soggy. And if you like raisins, they've got 'em in there too. But if you dislike raisins with the slightest of passions (like I do...), it's still ok because you can barely taste/feel them amidst the the pure joy that is relinquished upon your palate by all the other elements of this dessert.
I landed here one evening after arriving in Woods Hole and realizing that I had no idea where to eat dinner. I was hoping for a more diverse menu but after I decided on a BLT, chowder, a modest portion of dessert and an espresso, I settled in to what turned out to be a cozy cafe in a salt of the earth seaside town. Free wifi and the aroma of fresh coffee fill the air. Local art adorns the walls and there's one computer available for public use. Bring your own computer and make use of the wifi to your hearts content. There's a nice patio with umbrella'd tables and the staff is great .
Every time we come to Woods Hole, we go to Pie in the Sky almost every day. The bread pudding, bear claws, wonder bars, chocolate croissants and pies (!) are simply amazing and worth the calories. This place far exceeds a regular bakery. The baked goods and other food tastes like it was made from scratch with fresh ingredients. The hours are accommodating to most schedules - they open early and close relatively late.
THE BEST POPOVERS ON PLANET EARTH!. Will drive 30 min one way just to get them and their iced coffee, croissants, and all other delicious goodness this place has to offer. Amazing.
If you're taking the ferry to MV and arrive more than 30 minutes early, park you car in the staging line at the ferry terminal and make the 2 minute walk to Pie in the Sky - you will be happy you did so when you're sitting on your 45 minute ferry ride with a bag of delicious goodies. I got a breakfast sandwich there that was amazing. It's tough to justify calling a ham, egg and cheese sandwich amazing, but believe me, this one was. The key is to ask for it on a "Popover". You can also get it on one of the standard bread items like toast, etc, but you HAVE to get it on a Popover. Not sure how to describe a popover exactly, sort of like a cream puff without the cream. All I know is that I am in love with this puffy pastry like bread. I also got a blueberry scone which was quite good. They had several varieties of coffee...I don't remember which I got, but it was very good, not amazing, but worth getting.
I actually worked here for about a week one summer - the best part was taste-testing! I say skip the breakfast sandwiches and get the chocolate croissants (amAZING) and the egg salad on croissant for lunch. Delish! (assuming, of course, you like croissants.)
Awesome, awesome place.
When my family and I go on the trail from the parking lot in Falmouth, to the ocean then finally to Woods Hole, the only thing that keeps me going is the thought of Pie in the Sky.
the Danish's are awesome, the popovers are amazing and they have those old fashioned soda's in glass bottles.
amazing place.
this place saved us for two summers on the cape in a row. though we were in mass on the university of chicago's dime, we had to buy our own meals and if pie and the sky hadn't been around we would have gone broke. i don't like to cook as it is but in a teensy cottage, it's an even more far-fetched idea.
pie in the sky has yummy sandwiches, amazing bread pudding and so so coffee. the service is pretty absent-minded but what you'd expect from summering students and since i always had plenty of time to kill, for once i didn't mind. when i have babies and we go to the vineyard on vacation (holla oak bluffs) we'll stop here before getting on the boat for a quick snack and some nostalgia.
i think i ate breakfast here everyday for 3 weeks straight in the summer of 2003. if you find yourself in a summer session at the marine biological laboratory you will find this place to be a life saver. wood's hole just doesn't have enough options when you are living there while doing research. nobody obsessed enough with science to be at the MBL would ever take the time to drive to Falmouth and take advantage of the larger selection of food choices. this place fortunately has enough variety that you can keep yourself out of repetition. i never had a thing here that wasn't delicious. all the standards but done really well. it's the closest place before you get the ferry to martha's vineyard so you can grab something on the way and be ready to bike off whatever you just indulged in. this is my kids favorite place to eat in woods hole too.
