My favorite part of my new neighborhood are all the amazing shops and boutiques on Polk and Hyde, and Picnic is by far my favorite.
I tried to resist going in for so long (poor grad student shouldn't be shopping so much) but every time I walked past I wanted the outfits I saw in the window. I would say the style is comparable to anthropolgie with a slight neon funky twist.
The staff is great, my first trip I found a great little sweater/cardigan dress, the button fell of when I was trying it on and the woman working there sewed it on in 5 minutes for me and I was out the door!
The prices are average, and of course, I have lots of love for the clearance rack. The jewelry is unique, adorable, and affordable!
Such an appropriate name, its like a lil picnic basket full of goodies!
Cute, cute, cute!
Love this place for unique, affordable, homemade jewelry and gifts. The women who work here are super sweet too, which just makes it all the more sweet.
The things here are just cool - from necklaces featuring little woodland creatures, to classic wallets, to fun boutiquey clothes. This places gives you conversation-starter garb fo' sure.
Decked out. Yeah.
Cute, local shop to find adorable gifts, unique dresses/tops/sweaters, and accessories. I agree with a previous poster that accessories are often over-priced, but hey-- this isn't Forever 21, people! It's a very well-designed store with well-selected pieces and it's a joy to browse. I frequently step in on my walk home just to take a gander at what's new.
Very cute selection of cute, somewhat unusual gifts with broad appeal-- perfect for last-minute gifts, or gifts for a female friend you don't know that well yet.
It's my favorite hole in the wall.
All the colors and shiny trinkets bring a tear of happiness to my right eye.
The tear from my left eye comes from not being able to afford buying the entire store.
It's the perfect place to go to find gifts ranging from unique hand-made jewelry, to bags, wallets and clothes. I could, and have, spend forever in there exploring all of the goodies packed into all the nooks and crannies of this closet-sized gem.
If you've got money to spend, which I don't, it's a wonderful place to find some goodies for yourself and friends. If not, you can still find a few little treasures that won't bruise your bank too badly :)
Cute-r-us.
The perfect little boutique, with a range of items at a range of prices.
In this little store you will find: eco friendly sacks, trendy accesories, beautiful scarves, women's cotton goods, nu bras, undies, and more!
I want everything in this store, especially the tops, sweaters and dresses. Unfortunately at the moment I can only afford to shop at H&M. However, note that Picnic does have pretty reasonably priced, cute jeans. Good place for little gifty things too.
This place has cute stuff, and sometimes if you watch something you really like, it might end up on sale (not much of a sale, but it's a sale nonetheless).
But their accessories seem a bit over-priced.
I see a lot of complaints about the staff. I think the owner only hires her friends or friends of friends... who also seem to be fashion students. I don't want to sound rude in any way, but I think it's a little bit of a turn-off to customers when all the staff is speaking another language, and when they do speak English it's in that small voice of one who is using it uneasily as a second language. I work with managers who speak another language over our heads and the customer's too; so I'm just saying that it could be viewed as rude or a bit put-offish to some people. Like that "what are they saying?" feeling, you know?
If the staff doesn't smile or isn't all customer-servicey, it's not frostiness or snootiness, it's just language barriers.
This is my favorite neighborhood boutique! I like to think of myself as selective, so when I say they have a great selection of cute clothes, it goes a long way.
The owner/sales peeps are hands off, which I like. They let customers browse and are available when needed. The store carries a lot of indie designers that you'd usually have to go hunting for in other cities. God bless this buyer who's opened up an affordable oasis of fashion in this city!
Just got back from the store and picked up a sexy cashmere sweater for SF's chilly weather and a tank for balmy LA days/nights.
Definitely a great place to browse for unique, affordable items or gifts for friends. It's a once a week stopover on the way home for me.
Ditch the mainstream and high prices elsewhere and check this place out.
After reading some really great Yelp reviews, I finally made my way to Picnic yesterday. I was expecting more of a selection of dresses but other than that, I was not disappointed.
They have adorable little t-shirts and a good selection of cute tanks and tops. Their little knick-knacks and jewelry were awesome too. I ended up buying an awesome purple dress for my wine tasting trip this weekend (for a LOT less than I was expecting) and a really cool vest. At the register, I was also suckered into buying a precious little bracelet with a shell on it to give to my friend for her birthday. The woman working there was helpful but not in your face or bothersome.
I will definitely be returning. This is one of those shops that you are always going to find something unique that you would never see elsewhere.
I saw maybe two things interesting in this store and that was it. I know it's a womens store but they other things that may have been intresting to myself. The salesperson was doing nothing but looking out the store door. No greeting or hello. The store is not all that anyways.
Not going back.

We stopped by after my friend's laptop ran out of energy juice at The Crepe House (due to no outlets along the wall accessible by patrons) and only because a cute flirty top was waving at us from across the street (decided to head towards Peet's).
Small hall in the wall with a good range of trendy items that were not only mixed in with affordables but brands like Free People, To The Maxx, Soda Blu in addition to accoutrements like the very cute Loungefly cigarette holder that I'm going to utilize as a business card holder instead ($12). In addition, there were several racks of clearance items marked down to almost half off. A fell in love with a somewhat surreal t-shirt but could not justify the $85 price tag. However, the Tulle brand clothing was quite chic and the grey top reminded me to come back within a few weeks. Maybe if it were half off.....
Alas, the only problem was that many of their sizes do not adapt well to my size 6 curves (butt/chest factor) which would explain why I walked out with one small little brown bag tucked under my arm. My friend, however, fared better with two adorable summer dresses for $85!
The owner was affable and nice, allowing us to peruse without the typical boutique banality of following people around like dogs.
I'll be back, since I did see a vertical black/white striped top that would look good the next social event I hit.
I really like the selection and layout at Picnic. Some of the prices are a little high, but some are very reasonable. It's really like a Sheckys girls night out all crammed in to one little tiny store.
I LOVE this boutique and anytime I am on Polk St., I make a point of stopping in. The owner is so sweet and the shop is packed full of super cute tops, skirts and dresses from great designers. If you are a Free People fan, you will find some of the best pieces here.
The prices range from reasonable to pricey depending on the piece. The best part is you will find such great steals that you won't find anywhere else.
Looking for a great gift? You will find some very cool accessories and jewlery as well.
adorable neighborhood boutique.
yet, not something I'd go out of my way to go to if it weren't near my house.
Their jewelry is adorable and unique. Prices are VERY wide ranged...from moderate to really expensive. They have a great Zachary Pryor collection there... see ZacharyPryor(dot)com for more information about him. I bought a pair of the earrings at Picnic and get compliments everytime I wear them because they are so unique.
As is most of the things in Picnic. They seem to really cater to the fashion forward ladies...which is nice and they have a wide range of styles and colors for such a small store. Sadly, they are limited in the amount of items. They seem to try to have one of each size if possible on hand at all times.
The sale rack is also very awesome.
Cute little store with lots of cute little clothes.
Really awesome part of the place- the girls who work here know jeans!
I want to give this store 5 stars. I really, really do. After all, I get most of my cutest items here (both clothing and jewelry) which receive accolades from both women AND men...you know you're wearing something truly awesome when a guy will stop you on the street and compliment your dress. (As long as you're not walking in the Castro, that is.) Seriously, though, the clothes in Picnic are THAT CUTE.
Only complaint? The sizes. While it's not their fault (and all clothing lines size differently), it can sometimes be hard to find something to flatter my 5'8" frame...they carry an abundance of extra-smalls that stop right above my belly button. C'mon, kids, it's not 1996 anymore and midriff tops are OUT.
But that really IS my only complaint. The owner and staff there are SO helpful, very friendly and attentive. The merchandise rotates quite often so you'll always find something new, and they place a lot of the items on sale if they haven't sold quickly. They also offer knicknacks (I bought the most beautiful letter-pressed calendars as holiday gifts this year) and the jewelry is both unique and stunning.
A stark contrast from the overpriced boutiques located nearby on Union Street, take my advice and walk a few blocks up to Polk for cute, affordable clothes and a fun shopping experience.
I heart this store! A great SF stop as everything here is fun and unique - skip the mall people and come straight to picnic (Especially for dresses)!! A mix of fun brands and items including Free People tops and dresses, Made Tanks and comfy items, funky thermals, a range of unique denim and the dress selection is AWESOME!
Great thing about picnic is the range of prices. You can find a cute item for under $60 or a stunning piece (one of those dresses you'll keep forever!) for closer to $200.
Unique jewelry that you won't find anywhere else also - as well as belts, umbrellas, scarves, the NuBra (as well as a variety of bra/nipple cover/strap accessories...can we talk about how hard it is to have boobs!?) and maternity stuff too - which I thankfully don't need yet. The staff and girl who own the shop are wonderful - don't meddle but give you good feedback - great for gifts and of course for yourself; if you are a fabulous chica in SF - and I know you are - check it out!!!
Cute girly things, friendly staff. I found a great little tote bag here and some unique tee-shirts. I recommend this place to anyone who thinks that good SF style is found only on Valencia street.
Their clothes are cheap but I couldn't find anything that I liked .
Really cute store with a wide selection of unique clothes at all price points. You'd also be hard pressed to not find a great gift for a girlfriend in here. My only complaint is their customer service. I went in on a slow afternoon and was the only customer. I couldn't get a hello, a do you need me to put this in a dressing for you, do you need another size, or a goodbye for the life of me. Luckily, their snooty attitudes don't translate to snooty prices.
This cute boutique really is a Picnic....the buyer/owner of this store for sure had great taste and knows fashion. If only we can get some cheese/crakers and wine then I would feel like I am at a Picnic when I come into the store.
It's so hard to find a boutique/clothing store that gets it right, and Picnic gets it so right. Every item here is precious and would appeal to the person searching for that perfect little something. The style here is like Anthropologie but cuter and more thought out, and the prices are reasonable. The advantage of having a boutique versus a Corporate chain is that a boutique carries more small select items from a larger variety of brands, and Picnic is a great example of this.
It's love at first sight... Picnic is a littly rinky dinky boutique on Russian Hill with a cool flea market, girlfriend's appartment feel. The clothes are fabulous, the girls that work there are helpful and I alway find something there that I like and the prices are reasonable. It's also the perfect place for gifts. The best part however is the decor! My only gripe is that they only have one fitting room.
I can never walk in here without buying something, and I am always able to find something no matter how close to payday it is. Every item hangs lovingly in this boutique unlike other shops where they pack as many pieces in as they can. I love the people behind the counter for their effortlessly cool chic style, and that they are not at all pushy, but are helpful when needed.
This store is SO cute! Everything about it is adorable and Jasmine, the gir that owns it is so great and helpful. The stuff is funky and different. There's lots of stuff here you won't see anywhere else. As well as lots of staples, like Made and BCBG. The prices are super reasonable too. I heart Picnic!
Cute clothes, purses, and things for the home. The best part is they carry things you don't see at every store. the only thing that prevents a 5-star rating is that they take a couple seasons to mark stuff down- so if you're waiting for that perfect skirt that's too expensive to go on sale, you'll be waiting a long time.
I bought my most favorite dress in the WORLD here.
I Love this cutesy store...I thought it was a picnic store for its accoutrement and books- but its a little chic boutique of comfortable t-shirts , casual wear and jewelry...they carry Fornarina jeans, LA Made and To the Maxx...all I like :-) Staff always encouraging and helpful- ask for their sales time- they have great finds!!!
A hidden treasure! They have a range of high and low end stuff and it's all really unique stuff. However the store is pretty small and if there are more than two or three people in the store it can get crowded. Also you have to really be prepared to look around to find stuff as the store is packed. Still worth a shot to find something a little more unique.
How do they fit so much in such a little store? It was a nice day and I was walking down Polk St. to pickup lunch when suddenly scent of new handbag lured me into the store. I fell in love with the cutest cotton dress. Picnic is a small treasure in the neighborhood. I'm gonna go back to see what I can find next!
Homey lil store with cute clothing line and trinkets and accesories. Everything is just cutesy in here with handbags to sweaters to tees and reasonable prices.
I was strolling by in the evening when the stores gravitational pull sucked me in in. literally had my nose stuck to the glass. The woman that was closing up took pity on me and unlocked the door. I heart the top I got there. It is so unique. They have many precious hand bags.
Looking for unique items to add to your closet? Picnic is the place to visit! I purchased some Hollywood strips there and it works a like a charm! I love it and it's nice to have it in my neighborhood! My friend cought a cute laptop bag for under $25. Check it out!
I really want to like this place more than I do because it is super cute. However, I can't like it all that much because every time I try anything on there, I get really pissed off at whoever it is that designs their ridiculously sized clothing. I am a size 8. I am well-proportioned, a little bottom heavy, but nothing out of the ordinary. Everywhere else in the world I can wear a medium. But Picnic seems to exist in a vortex where a size 8 person can't even fit into a large. I would think this was just me if I hadn't taken my sister the size 4 there. She could fit into the larges, but barely.Seriously, who are these women who can wear these clothes? They must be miniature.
This is one of my favorite neighborhood stores. It's rare that I walk out of here without finding something I really like. Prices are reasonable, esp compared to other boutiques where you won't find tops less than $130. Some of my favorite label discoveries here are Talla and Soda Blu. They also have a wide selection of Made stuff.
Picnic has the most unique assortment of clothing, and they introduced me to Saja, one of my favorite designers. Their dresses are flattering to any body type and make you feel like a Greek Goddess! I love going to Picnic for those one off gifts too!
The cutest local boutique I've been in San Francisco. They always have unique stuff that you hardly find it anywhere. Don't be shy to ask if you don't know what you see. The owner and the girls who work there are friendly and so helpful.
I'm crossing my fingers that I come back cute and petite in my next life. If I do, I'm totally shopping at Picnic.
Until then, I've got to be content just peaking in the boutique's windows, or fawning enviously over my roommate's most recent Picnic purchase (tunic-y tanks seem to be their specialty).
Wish me luck...
i have been a loyal customer of picnic for the past 4 years and never thought of writing them a review!
picnic is my first goto place whenever i need an addition to my wardrobe, or a gift for a galfriend.
it has the most relaxing vibe and the cutest selection of clothes and accesories.
The selection is constantly changing and they don't carry too many of each style, so it's almost like a treasure hunt each time i go. And if i hesitate, it's usually gone when i make it back!
the friendly staff always say hi when i go in and are always helpful when i need them. And the best part is, you can spend however long you want browsing at ease without anyone tailing you!
price wise, i have seen quite a few pieces at Picnic that are marked at higher prices at other boutiques.
by now i'm used to people's compliments such as "that's so cute! where did you get it?" and yup, the answer is always "Picnic!"
Easily the cutest shop in The Gulch. Clothes for fashionable ladies.
