4 reviews for Picklefish
I used to go there with friends on a regular basis and loved the place. Then we burnt out and found other restaurants. I went back about 2 months ago and was utterly disappointed -- our pizza was ok, the burger was only ok (I think a fast food joint can do a better job), my roast beef sandwich was terrible - the meat had been previously frozen and the au jus tasted very much like Swanson beef broth.
I did not know that the restaurant had changed hands but that explains a lot -- it's nothing like it used to be. It'll be a long while till I go back or recommend the restaurant to someone else.
I have to start by saying that for years Picklefish had the best American-style crust pizza I had ever eaten, and that the Kitchen Sink was a monstrous pizza heaping with toppings (hence the name).
Well things have changed! Several months ago the restaurant was bought by a local business man who I have a lot of respect for. He owns Shiraz (next store) and Food Pack (down the street). And this was the first time I'd ordered from there since he's been established. So we ordered two pizzas to go from there tonight, a kitchen sink and a great white, two signature Picklefish pizzas. To our horror, when we got home, we found in our boxes not a fluffy and chewy crust topped with mounds of ingredients, instead there was a perfectly descent flat crust with only a smattering of toppings. A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT if you are used to, I'm not kidding, the best crust in the southeast.
Not to say that anything about the pizza is bad. It's an enjoyable experience, but don't go there thinking it was the pizza joint you used to know and love.
So until they bring back the original crust and real toppings, you're better off going across the street to Mellow Mushroom. To the management of Picklefish I say "Please bring back our pizza!"
This review is for their pizza (take-out) only.
I was recently in Mobile visiting some friends and a pizza (The Big Pig) was brought to us on my first night there.
It was just barely warm by the time it reached us (no fault of the restaurant), but it was damn good. The crust was thin, but still chewy and there was a good ratio of sauce to cheese to toppings.
I hear this is a fun place to go for a few drinks, but I did not get a chance to do that. Maybe next time!
Alas, no pickled fish.
Specializes in pizza, subs, good spinach dip. Decent beer selection. Thursday night is trivia night. Cash prize $30, $20, and $10. Come with a team. Very simple, turn in sheets of paper. This place gets 4 stars on Thursday night.
USA employees get a 10% discount.
There is another location at 251 Dauphin Street. I don't think that one has trivia and there is no USA discount. Phone # for Daupin St. location: (251) 434-0000
