YUMM, can we say, "holy steak sandwich, Batman" ?
Don't let the apparent emptiness of the parking lot fool you! The sandwiches served up here are awesome! And the potato salad is pretty freakin' good, too. Looks homemade, judging from the standard Tupperware container it came out of. Fries are shoestring-style and tasty. But back to the sandwiches, and the meaning behind that "BBQ" in the name. I ordered the tri-tip sandwich; hubby got the filet mignon sandwich (not listed on the menu). Get this-- the guys are actually outside BBQ'ing your order for you on a real BBQ. I know, sounds simple, but the result is unbelievable. Very flavorful, very meaty sandwiches. And the flavors aren't the same, so it's not like they use the same marinade for all the meat.
Downsides: not everything on the menu is available. I originally wanted the pull-pork sandwich (a friend raved about it) but they hadn't "prepared any" that day. Okay, no problem. I'll have a beer (Corona, please), but they didn't have that either. The good news is, they do have Hefeweizen and that wins points with me. Go with soda or beer here, as the water tasted suspiciously tap-like. (And I don't know about you, but being that close to the Lawrence Livermore Lab, I don't trust water from the tap.)
Sandwiches are about $7.95 each and include your choice of fries/potato salad/coleslaw. $23 got us two robust sandwiches, a soda and a beer. Not bad at all!
This was the former location of New Mailey's. The place has been transformed from sushi to a coffee, pastry, ice cream, and sandwich shop. The menu offers the usual appetizers: Wings, Chicken Strips, Fries, and something called Sweet Potato Coins. Burgers are served on a baguette style roll. My wife and son said the burgers were fresh, and homemade tasting. My wife added avocado and bacon for an additional charge. There are deli / panini sandwiches and fresh tossed salads. I went in for the BB-QUE. I'm a tri-tip snob. I found the portion a little small and the meat flavorless. Was the any sauce? I can remember. Funny thing is, the Burgers are served with a soda instead of fries. Fries where an extra charge. I did get fries with my tri-tip though. My wife got an order of onion rings which she said were excellent and not greasy. They use some new kind of quick fryer I had never seen. It was good. Calling this place a BB-QUE restaurant is misleading. Perhaps the should have just kept to the PICK ME UP CAFE name. When I see BB-QUE, I think ribs, tri-tip, links, etc. This is a sandwich grill. It is worth noting that the night I went in, the chef / owner had hurt himself and his family were trying to keep the place open in his absence. Nice ppl. They did try hard. Even gave a 50% discount coupon for my next visit. Unnecessary, but appreciated.
10/20/08: Sad to report this family owned business has closed. Why in gawds name are places like Round House Grill allowed to survive and this place couldn't. Damn cooperate $$$...
Mostly I just wanted to write this to promote their AWESOME salads. It says BBQ on the sign which might deter any curious vegetarians but let me tell you if you're looking for an awesome salad or grilled sandwich Cafe Pick Me Up is your best bet in Livermore.
The place is simple and good. The portions are decent. The beers are reasonably priced, and the family that owns and runs the place is laid back and really friendly. What I really liked is that the kitchen is open, so you can see that it is very clean. Also, the ingredients were very fresh tasting, and their delicious potato salad is homemade. They have an outdoor patio which is nice for enjoying the sun or dining with your dog. I highly recommend checking this place out!
I had enjoyed the food at this little joint. Went back last weekend and found that it had closed down. Too bad, nice family run place
