10 reviews for Pica Taco Cafe
This place is good if you know what to get and pretty bad if you don't
Do get:
Lengua Tacos - actually among the better lengua I've had in DC. That doesn't say much but nothing wrong with being a big fish in a little pond when I don't have a car to drive to the better ponds (did that make sense?)
Barbacoa/Lengua/Pastor Torta - They make great tortas here. They have great bread and that stringy Oaxacan cheese that I have yet to see anyone else serve out east.
Don't Get:
Chicken Tacos - So dry!
Burrito - they don't wrap it well and the cheese melts funny.
Breakfast Burrito - same as the burritos above. don't bother.
If you follow my advice it's a 4 star joint. If you don't it's a 1 star joint. Trust me on this one.
While I'm still loyal to Super Tacos as my fav cheap Mexican place in DC, Pica Taco is a close second. I've had a pork burrito and the chicken tacos, and on each visit the service was friendly and fast and the food was fresh and tasty. The tacos are traditional, with corn tortillas filled with meat, tomatoes and onions, and a heap of cilantro. They also have hot sauce and sour cream available on request.
The family who owns this place used to run the taco cart on 16th and Columbia, and the move indoors expanded the menu to include ceviche, quesadillas, and some breakfast offerings. It's a cute little space with a few outdoor tables as well, and super cheap.
While I think for burritos and more elaborate food Super Tacos is still the best, Pica is a nice alternative to have in the neighborhood.
This place reminds me of baja. Simple, freshly prepared food, with the proprietor right there taking your order. Tacos come on warm corn tortillas, sprinkled with fresh cilantro and radish slices with a lime wedge on the side. The meat (barbacoa and al pastor) was flavorful and not at all greasy. The rice and beans were simply prepared, again with a distinctive home-style taste, and the green and red hot sauces were excellent.
A new place that does a few things decently, freshly, and right in front of you. I would say the food they have is well ahead of supertacos, however the variety of offerings can't really compare. If all you want is a simple, fresh mexican fix, this will be your new favorite place.
This is a cute little taqueria and also a COFFEE place. The chicken tacos are pretty hearty and cheap. Check it out.
The food deserves 3 stars, but the service was fantastic. Not only was the owner friendly and helpful, but she gave me a free taco, so I could try her lengua (tongue). The barbacoa was in fact a bit dry and stringy, but not bad. The al pastor was pretty darn good. The salsas were just okay. Pica taco is better than any tacos on Mt. Pleasant, but I prefer Super Taco a few blocks away on Columbia.
Alright. It's new so I'll give it another chance after awhile. The barbacoa was a bit dry and stringy, but the burrito was otherwise decent if unremarkable. I also got a chicken quesedilla which was loaded with al pastor--not bad. The main guy seems pretty nice so I'll be back to try the enchiladas. In the meantime supertacos and taco DF are definitely superior. I would say burrito fast and this place might work out to be a toss up
Pica offers breakfast so I might have to give that a shot soon.
I've been by twice now, stopping after work to pick up some dinner.
The ingredients are fresh, and they use them plentifully. The food is made right in front of you, and the give pretty generous amounts. They keep the tacos very tradition and simple: two warm, thin, small tortilla, a generous helping of mean, and chopped onion/celantro on top (with a lime wedge). The pork is really, really good. The beef is great. I knock off a star for having tough chicken, though it may have just been that day.
Stop by and get two pastor tacos for five bucks. They do have a seven dollar minimum to use your credit card, though, so pick up a drink to even it out.
UPDATE:
Went back and this time the chicken was nice and moist, though the barocao was a little dry! So I guess it just depends (the pork was perfect as usual, though).
Caution: the hot sauce it incredibly, unbearably hot. Even though I just used a little my lips feel like they're on fire. Literally painful! So be cautious when they ask if you'd like some: either say no, have them dab just a little, or ask if they can include it on the side. Avoid the hurt!
Pretty good. I echo what Robert G and Tom M said. Extra props because they were open on July 4th to satisfy my early afternoon lunch needs.
Super Tacos & Bakery (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) is just down the street and arguably the best in the area (nothing on Mt. Pleasant can compete with ST&B's tacos even, as far as I know), but Pica Taco is perfectly good food. And cheap. And sometimes those extra 5 minutes of walking make a difference. And (at least in the tacos) the really do pile on tons of meat.
Check it out!
I came in for a quick cheap taco and thats exactly what I got.
A corn tortilla heated up with a heap of decently moist and flavorful chicken and some mild but tasty salsa for 2 bucks. Very decent.
Theres mention of ceviche on their flier but I didnt see it on the menu.
Great food and Great service. Tacos are very authentic and very tasty. I have ate there a couple times now and the manager is always there and very nice. I would recommend to try because I loved it and love the HOT sauce! It's an awesome place to sit outside and eat and enjoy nice weather.
