There's a sign outside Pi Bar that proudly proclaims "People Hate us on Yelp."  I'm not sure that's true, but does it matter?  The French Laundry and the Tamale Lady have the same rating on Yelp.   Clearly, something is amiss in Yelpland.

The first time I came to Pi Bar, the wait staff completely ignored us for about 10 minutes.  Eventually we got our name down on the wait list, had a beer, and then left after almost an hour.  During that time *nobody* was seated.

But who's fault is this?  Certainly, the service is slow.  Wait staff disappear for 30 minutes at a time.  But on the other hand, the patrons aren't in any hurry here either.  It's a very laid back restaurant, like a bar that just happens to serve pizza.

I wasn't impressed by the pizza.  You get a better slice at Arinell's.  But Pi Bar has a rotating list of fresh beer, and Arniell's just has Coke.  And if we're going to be mathematical, I have an equation for you:
Pizza + Beer is greater than Pizza + Soda

The saving grace of Pi Bar is this: the price.  Draft beer is $5, a slice of pizza is $3.14, and whole pizzas start at $14.  At Pi Bar you'll be well fed, buzzed, and still have money left over -- but only if you can survive the wait.

Not a bad place to go to. The first time I was here, the wait was so long that my boyfriend and I left. It's big, yet there isn't enough sitting (yet, I can't quite figure out how they can fit more).

The pizza is reasonably priced, the beer as well, and though it wasn't the worst slice I've had, it certainly wasn't the best either. But overall, something made our stay quite pleasant. Maybe it was the beer.

It kinda throws me off that they don't really have a hostess.

This place is not trying to be something it's not. Here's what they're not pretending to be:

*  Gourmet Pizza for foodies
*  Sceenster hangout
*  Fancy brunch place for wine-swilling yuptards

I had my reservations about this place, given it's buzz on SF blogs and on yelp.  I don't really want to stand in line for dinner... AND certainly don't want to hang out with a bunch of rich, food loving yuppies whose focus in life is being the first to eat at a new restaurant and then trash it for not being cool enough. ugh.

Anyway. Pi Bar isn't like that.

It's a relaxed bar, with no ESPN, where you can grab a nice beer and a slice of pizza.

Take it for what it is, and enjoy.

There is nothing I love more than an awesome happy hour, especially when it involves pizza as well as delicious, delicious beer.  Pi Bar does this very well.  I came here for a drink and a slice for my pre-birthday celebration (party of 2), and was really pumped on what we found.  For $6 you get whatever beer special is being offered (a 21st Amendment one last Friday) and a slice of cheese.  Hello heaven.

I will definitely be back to give it another go, if not just for the beer selection.  The staff was really sweet, and I must say I was impressed with the bike racks outside.  Lots of room for lots of bikes, a definite plus in my book!

Upfront disclaimer: this is not going to be one of those hairsplitting expositions on how the slices at Pi are not everything that some mythical pizza place in Brooklyn used to be in my romanticized imagination.

The husband and I stopped in for a quick bite before heading down to a Sharks game. For less than $25, we had three delicious slices and three beers per the happy hour special. The slices were not mythical, but totally delicious. The beer selection is excellent and has a number of seldom-seen items and great variety. The service was friendly, fast and attentive. The crowd was diverse - a neighborhood guy in his 60s reading the Financial Times, hipsters, families with young children. Everyone seemed welcome.

I had a great time and fully expect to put Pi in the regular rotation. Two quick suggestions - perhaps add some sound dampeners as it did get really loud, and maybe adjust the tables across from the bar to fit in a bit more seating. Otherwise, a great addition to the neighborhood!

P.S.  It's across the street from Anthony's Cookies, so save room.

Having moved to SF from NYC I was thrilled to hear there was going to be a Brooklyn style pizza joint opening up a block from my house. I could not have been more dissapointed by the pizza. The crust tastes like I imagine cardboard would taste and the toppings are equally tasteless and unispired (I had one slice of sausage and one slice of pepperoni and garlic). A slice is cheap to be sure, but then again, think of all the other things your four dollars could buy that actually have flavor.

Another nice addition to the Mission pizza brigade on a block that gets freakishly quiet once the sun goes down.

This one's ever-so-slightly less yuppie, if only because it looks more like a tavern and has way more draught beers than wine.

Deux Amis zinfandel was good, but I'll give the beers a shot next time. Spinach salad with house-made Italian sausage and feta was an excellent start. Two of us finished an entire pizza, which means it was either delicious or manageable enough to do so (it was both, for the record). Hand-thrown thin crust with portabello mushrooms and pepperoni hit the spot. Pi doesn't have an insane list of original and wacky toppings, but I'm way into this place.

Note: adorable, clever specials deserve a mention. $3.14 (get it?!) for a slice of cheese pizza, and $6.28 2-Pi-"R"egular: a slice and the beer of the day.

I love it how everyone comes to San Francisco and feels entitled to be a snob about pizza. Like it's the *one* sanction for coming to this food paradise. Lack of delicious pizza. Delicious, thin, NEW YORK STYLE PIZZA...because we're *all* used to good East Coast pizza, right? Even the millions of us that came from Michigan or some shit like that.

You know who you are.

I'll admit, New York makes some damn good pizza, but Pi Bar does a fucking amazing job at bringing it here.

Deeeelishus pizza.
Simple but witty menu.
Excellent rotating beer.
Amazing staff.

Just because you got your panties in a bunch with high expectations from the excellent publicity they earned prior to opening, doesn't mean they didn't deliver. You expected New York, but we're in San Francisco. Maybe if they brought the frigid fucking cold or the sultry summer heat and were jerks to you, you might decide you like the pizza.

Good solid NY style pizza & good bears on tap = what more could one ask for?!

Pi does serve other stuff (some apps, pasta dishes) but unsure if the other stuff is good since we just ordered a pie.

I'd totally go back and order a large pizza with cheese and some beers.  Yummy.

My 2 friends had been wanting to try Pi Bar for a while.  Overhyped.  They had nothing bad to say about it, but I think this place doesn't hold a candle to what was easy to get many places when I lived in NY.  If you're pizza-hungry in san francisco, search hard and expect disappointment.

Let me start with the good:

-Sauce had more flavor and spice than the usual around here.  (That's always my #1 complaint... a lot of places do it like spaghetti sauce - uggh, ew, sweet.)  Decent but not great.

-Crust wasn't over-doughy or soggy, and earned points from my friends compared to other local places I haven't been.

-Cheese was a reasonable amount.

-Portabella mushroom topping was well prepared.

The bad:

-Cheese was dry and plastic-y.  That sheen of grease you get on a good, cheesy (even cheap and generic) pizza might be too much for you, but go ahead and blot it if so.  I love it... and it should bubble together with the sauce.  Of course, we did have takeout and waited to eat, so it wasn't super warm when we did.  It would be better straight from the oven, but I love a good pizza even when it's cold, and this failed to impress.

-Crust was tasteless, dry and cracker-y.  Nice try for thin NY style, but I NEVER leave the end of crusts, and I couldn't choke this down even with copious beer.

-Sauce did not complement the crust and cheese due to those drawbacks.  You could load in more spice and amount to compensate, but it would be the wrong balance.

I would like Pi Bar to get a pie from Pavones in Syracuse NY to see how it's done... just to name one random place barely anybody here would know, that doesn't need hype or cost to be great.  http://www.yelp.com/bi...

Local pizza I liked ok- Uncle Vitos, Little Star, Arinell.

The beer selecetion is great, the ambiance is good but I was hoping for good pizza, too, and it was only edible. Basically a nice beer bar that also serves some edible food.

I had to bump it up to 5, cause now we have started making a weekly visit to Pi bar to have yummy food and beer.  My husband always goes for pizza, and I always go for pasta.  Its all a perfect compliment to the beers they have on tap.  They also have a Toronado-worthy selection of Belgian beers in bottles.  Splurge on a Cinq Cents if you are feeling fancy.

My preference is for the bar, but we have sat at the big table up front as well.  I love the room and the staff are charming.  If we plan our evening right, we can get there for the happy hour beer-and-a-slice special, then run over to Anthony's Cookies for yummy cookies to bring back.  Kind of a perfect night, actually.

I really appreciate the simplicity of their menu, and the stunning freshness of the food.  Its a lovely addition to the neighborhood.

Pizza slice was just okay, lacked flavor. And why put the pepper and oregano in a dish instead of a shaker? It doesn't make you look fancier, it just makes it harder to get a normal amount on your pizza.

I asked the waitress about the new Liberty beer on tap,and  if it was bitter. She said it wasn't at all. I said, I don't like bitter.. she said nope, its not bitter at all.

It was, and I didn't like it. A good waitress would have let me have a taste, we were sitting across from the tap at the bar for craps sake. OR suggested one of the Belgium beers they have on tap now, or anything that wasn't bitter. But she seemed more focused on drinking her own beer and hanging with the other bar tenders than giving decent service too us.

As I was leaving, I noticed the "people hate us on yelp" sign. I laughed, props to them. I appreciate honesty.

but still...

Food:

Solid pizza, which benefited from the liberal addition of Parmesan cheese.  Under no circumstances order the appetizers - you might as well order another large pizza for the price of the mozzarella balls and pizza wheels or whatever they are called.  They didn't taste bad, but were absurdly priced for what you got.

Yay good beer list.

Service:

Pleasant, accommodating, nothing to complain about.

Overall, I really don't understand why everyone was salivating for this place to open.  You can get better pie at Arinell's.

Wish I could give 3.5 stars. I like it - there's nothing wrong with it - it's just that in a town obsessed with pizza, I feel like the pizza has to be over the top to get higher ratings! I appreciate the super casual neighborhood feel. Great beers on tap (Death and Taxes) and a long first come first serve bar.

I also get that they're not trying to compete with the Delfinas or Berettas of the city. It seemed like the NYC slice was more the model here. The pies were large, the pick-your-own-toppings were relatively traditional, and they actually serve oregano along with the chili flakes! The pizza was more of an in between, however. Thinner crust and less cheese than the classic NY pie which left me neither here nor there. Again, solid neighborhood spot, just not a huge wow. The spinach salad with sausage was great and the spaghetti down the bar looked good and homey too.

Note: It gets really loud in there when crowded which seems to be most of the time.

Pretty good. I'm going to give it another try. I think we ordered too many toppings on our pizza. Gotta keep it simple with thin crusts. It was a bit greasy but the crust was good. Portobellas were great. Onions were eh.

Beer list not as amazing as I was hoping for but hey, they've got Blind Pig IPA and I could live on that so ok.

I have to add that the Ceasar Salad dressing was really fantastic. Not usually my favorite  but this was good. I did have to laugh though - we asked if we could get the anchovies on the side. The ONE anchovy arrived on the top of the salad. Then the server apologized and said she'd buy one of our beers for us. She didn't. No big deal, I could pick off the one anchovy but she shouldn't have said that unless she was going to follow through. And if I liked anchovies I'd be sort of disappointed with one, wouldn't I?

Bonus points for no wait and a fair amount of seating. The lighting may be too bright though and it's sort of a shame that they have an open kitchen but not many tables where you can sit and watch them make the pies. The kitchen faces the backs of everyone sitting at the bar...

Overall, glad this place is an option for sit-down pizza in this neighborhood and I will definitely try it again. Hopefully I'll be inspired  to bump it up a star.

Back in the day (mid-1990s) when I first arrived in San Francisco, I was astonished to find that it was essentially impossible to get good pizza here. Fortunately, the situation has dramatically improved in the past 14 years, and now the Mission, formerly a desert of pizza sadness and abandonment, has become perhaps the best part of town to forage for a good pie.

So of course I'd been thoroughly looking forward to visiting this place Pi Bar: oh boy! Allegedly good pizza, closer to where I live than the other influx of recent (and generally awesome) pizza arrivals in the Mission. And with good beer, too? Sign me up!

My first disappointment was with the atmosphere of the place. It's a large space, painted a putrid ochre colour that's hard on the eyes. With the carpets and wall hangings that the predecessor tenant Suriya used to damp echoes all replaced by hard surfaces, the place is noisy and jangly to the nerves.

Also, that indefinable something in a place's atmosphere? In this case, that special numinous quality is completely absent, and the place feels like it would fit well into a mall in a small town outside Boston (having been to such places).

The service, on the other hand, was good: thoroughly friendly, attentive, quick, and professional. I was definitely happy on that front.

The selection and quality of beers was decent, but not in any way spectacular: it's not at all out of line for the Mission, and wouldn't hold a candle to any self-respecting bar in Portland. So while I was pleased with the drinks, don't buy the hype that Pi's beer selection is above average.

And now on to the pizza, which was a solid disappointment. They have two sizes, huge (15") and ridiculous (20"), which means you really need a party of two starving people to make much progress on even the 15". And the actual quality of the pizza was absolutely mediocre: not in any way a step up from some hole-in-the-wall by-the-slice joint (actually worse than some), and no threat to the new pizza hotness represented by Beretta or Pizzetta 211. The crust was chewy and soggy, the cheese was too heavy, and there wasn't enough sauce. Ugh.

I'm trying to think of something good to say about the place in conclusion beyond "they were professional and didn't give me food poisoning", but honestly, I wouldn't go back.

this place belongs in goleta, chico or some place beyond the valencia corridor.

i'll start by saying they have a decent beer selection.  But where's the wine?

Another thing missing: toppings.  the choices are redacted like a San Quentin dining hall.   Pizza that simple leaves alot to be desired --esp. in this town.

one thing front and center in my nose: the cleaning supplies that made it smell like a freshly cleaned bathroom.   Somehow i'll forever more have that smell associated with PI bar.

total waste of time and money. the former being more precious than the latter.

Pizza snob says:

Slices = meh
Whole pie = not bad... but not awesome.

**IN THEIR DEFENSE:  I know they were having some serious issues with their oven for a while, which of course would have a huge impact on the pizza.

As a B&R New Yorker, I was SO SO SO excited for the opening of this place.  I live close by, and dammit, there are precious few good places to grab a slice!  Hearing that one of the owners hailed from Brooklyn and wanted to do NY-style-by-the-slice and a no fuss menu, I was esctatic--  Alas, the pizza is but a shadow of my beloved pie.  It sure LOOKS like NY pizza, but the texture of the crust is not quite up to snuff.  Soft, a little doughy... no crunchy crackle.  It's NOT BAD, but not at all what I was expecting.

However:  They have DELICIOUS toppings including home-made meatballs and sausage, and a killer beer selection.  It's a great place to hang out, the owners and staff are nice as can be, and they literally just opened-- I think it's fair to assume it will take a while before they are a well-oiled machine.

In the mean time, I like it here!  Spectacular pizza or not, this is still a great place to have in the neighborhood, and I can't help but wish them all the best.
---------
NERD MOMENT: Suggestion to the owner:

You have cleverly named your happy hour special "Pi (R) Squared" and are charging $6.28.  I get what you're going for:  It's a play on the equation for the area of a circle.  But there are 2 things:

1. "R" is the key number in the equation, and obviously the R doesn't have anything to do w/ the special.

2.  Pi squared is not $6.28 (that's Pi times 2).  Pi squared is 9.86.

So:  I propose you change the name of the special to "2 Pi R", which is the equation for the circumference of a circle... aaaand just tell people who are huge nerds (such as myself) that R = 1.

Ta-da!

::end nerd transmission::

Similar in style to Arinell, heavy on the cheese with not enough sauce for my taste. Our large sausage pie was HUGE, more than enough for 3. Some slices had crispy crust but others were soggy from the excess cheese. The outer crust was too thick for me and I left it uneaten, but the rest of the crust was fine.

They have a daily slice and beer special.

The rundown for those who don't have time to read an epic novel

-- The pizza (by the slice): Crispy crust, light on sauce, cheesed to perfection w/toppings for just about every craving. I had peperoni but kept picking off my friends sausage masterpiece.

-- The beers: Will put others bars shame. There's something to be said about the stemware they use - it's a solid touch

-- The service: Sitting at the bar was a great way to get introduced to Pi. Enough time to check out every nook & cranny, including chatting up the friendly, knowledgeable staff. I knew I would like this place when I asked for a beer  similar to another and got a recommendation sans attitude (such a rarity).

-- The layout: Long/wide bar to accommodate your pizza pie & beers; tables for larger groups & kiddies; open kitchen to daydream about the life of a pi-maker. Hooks under the bar for your bags, jackets and anything hang-able.

-- Overall: It's pizza and beer done in a way that you don't feel like you're reliving your undergrad days. You'll take your friends here and they'll thank you for bringing them to somewhere unpretentious and downright good.

The bad
- Service was lacking.  We waited 15 min for a menu, no one checked in with us after we were served our food and it took a good 10 min to track down glass of water, we pulled out our credit card and put it on the table as a sign that we were ready for the check and they picked it up and ran it with out giving us the bill.
- Pizza was OK and lacking in flavor - For the price and the hype my expectations were a bit higher
- The topping options are limited and hard to pair.  For example we eyed the fresh anchovies but there wasn't a good pairing on the vegetable list.
- Even tho this place is further down the Valencia corridor the parking can still be tough

The good
- Great beer list!
- They use local ingredients
- You can get pizza by the slice
- The atmosphere is sophisticated for a pizza place but is still kid friendly

Glad we tried it, but we probably won't go back unless we had out of town guests with kids who were looking for a place close by for a pizza dinner.

If I was yelping Pi Bar based on service and price alone, I'd give three or four stars. The woman helping me was super friendly, and I'm a fan of the $3.14 slice price. A well done wink to their name.

Unfortunately that slice was not so good. Gross, actually. Things started so well when I was told they were made fresh, so I asked for light on the cheese. But my slice looked just like any other, even though the woman asked if it was light enough. I didn't know what to say. Not to mention grease was already dripping through the wax paper on both sides. I wasn't about to ask them to remake it. I bolted, and once home used about two rolls of paper towels to soak up as much grease and cheese as possible.

I realize I'm more uppity than most with this stuff, but I'm not sure many of you would find that much grease appealing. At least sober.

Great pizza with a crispy thin crust, awesome beer list, other tasty menu gems and friendly staff. More than a pizza-by-the-slice or another bar. Solid 4 stars, the 5th is based on personal taste and a bit speculative.  I love having this place in my neighborhood.

I've eaten here several times now as it is delicious and very close to my home. I've heard people compare the pizza to Arnell's which I can understand but Pi is of much higher quality. I like Arnells but the pizza is so greasy and lopsided it's a bit of an insult to the dish. Pi uses better ingredients and I think it really comes through. Also the crust is crisper. I realize that pizza tastes vary and I won't waste the time or ASCII characters telling you why I think the pizza is solid and there's more to this place. I will say that like every other pizza blowhard, I've lived in a pizza capital and eaten it more than any other food by far but maybe you're one of those people that likes gooey thick doughy crust and you'd hate this pizza.

My favorite dish, besides the pizza, is the spinach salad. I hate spinach but you know what, it's good for me. The thing that makes the spinach salad the furthest thing from a pile of bitter leaves is a touch of feta and a few crumbs of Italian sausage heated in the dressing.  Yum!!

During my last visit, I found out that the reason I love the sausage so much may be because it is handmade, on-site, every day! Think Arnells does that?

Okay, the beer. I like beer. I made my own beer for a few years and I love a place that has a wide variety of beers on tap without being over-the-top beer snobs (I'm looking at you, Toranado). Perennial favorites are on tap as well as a revolving selection of special treats that you won't see in many places.

Honestly I would normally give this place 4 stars because some items on the menu are a buck or two above a great deal.  The thing that pushes it to 5 for me is the math and motorcycle theme of the place. The happy hour special, called the pi*R^2 is a specific beer (different one every day) and a slice of cheese pizza for 6.28. Obviously they are assuming R to be equal to the square root of two and I would call it the 2*pi*R as the common assumption would be that we're talking about the unit circle, but I digress. Also, as is typical for a new restaurant, the menu is going through some changes. I wasn't a big fan of the pinwheels (I learned I just don't like pinwheels) but I hear a meatball sandwich is coming and I really cannot wait.

One of the owners is a motorcycle buff and has a couple cool pieces of motorcycle artwork on the wall. Also, as mentioned before, the staff is super friendly.

I live around the corner from Pi. I was sad when Suriya Thai closed up because it was a-friggin-mazing, but excited to have a cool new place coming in its place.

So...the pizza was pretty decent.  As opposed to Arinell's at 16th and Valencia, this place has a long way to go on its crust, which is the cornerstone of any good pie (or pi).  If there's no cracker crispiness to the crust, and I'm throwing away the crust after the goodies are eaten, then you are 0 for 2 in what makes a good crust.  The toppings were great - portobella mushrooms and sausage were the highlights.  The sauce and overall pie had good flavor.

But here's the stunner:  I grabbed a couple of pizzas to bring home to watch Monday night football with a few friends.  That's two pizzas and nothing else.  No beer.  No soda.  No salad.  No happy ending.  Nada.  After tax and tip it was $70.  HOLY MOTHER OF MARY!  That's WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much for two medicocre pizzas.  They should disclaim that they are fleecing you when you call in a to order to-go.

I was never a fan of Suriya, as apparently several other reviewers were, and I think Pi Bar is a *great* replacement - in theory, at least. I hate to see it getting reamed with sub par reviews, but I have to agree that the pizza is just not that spectacular.

Maybe they're still working out the just-opened kinks, but the pies really need more sauce and a better cooking strategy (my slices have been burned on the bottom the two times I've eaten here).

The one time I dined in, the service was nice enough, but a little scattered. On the plus side, the space is cozy, they play great music (X and other assorted punk on the night I was there), and they seem to have a great selection of beers and wine. On my next visit, I got a large pie to go and it was HUGE, so even if they charge a bit more, you definitely get what you pay for. No real complaints there.

I will definitely give this place another shot (or several) since I live so close and really do want it to succeed.

I hope that the owner reads these reviews and takes notes!

I was pretty thoroughly disappointed after the hype about this place...paying .75 cents more for a mediocre slice of pizza based on a math equation is a bit too pretentious hipster even for me (and I'm known to be quite a sucker, honestly). To be brutally honest, I've had better pizza from a frozen cardboard box. Maybe my slice was just old? Though in the time they took to "heat it" according to the server (about 10 minutes), Serrano's makes a better one from scratch.

Arinell's still reigns supreme as the best New York-style pizza in the Mission. I'll even take toothless employees of questionable hygiene and flourescent lighting over this place.

Bummer!

Very solid NY style pizza at very reasonable prices. Good atmosphere and a good beer selection.  The wines seem a bit overpriced but, other than that, a great addition to the area!

Total disappointment. I live about half a block away and have been looking forward to this place opening since Surya closed. I had thought, well I thought I had read something, on Eater that some hot-shot chefs were behind this place, so I was thinking that it might give Beretta a run for its money. Not so much. Overall impression, starting with the decor, food, etc. everything about this place seemed completely amateur and lackluster.

Honestly, the pizza is about on par with the crappy stuff I consumed when I was in college, at about 2am and after many beers. For about 1/30 the price, I'd have to say that even Katz's or Arinell's pizza is about 10 times better - and frankly, for this price, the pizza better be creative and artisanal. Not so much.

And, the non-pizza stuff on the menu was sort of hodge podge and boring (but expensive). Weird. Beside the cutesy $3.14 for a cheese slice, this place seems like not a whole lot of thought went into it, which is strange for any new restaurant doing business in SF.

The sauce has flavor and the toppings are fresh, but the crust is just totally lacking and not at all "New York Style".

What a disappointment!  Especially considering the price....$35 for one large pizza with two toppings.

Sorry Pi, that's just IRRATIONAL.

They gotta get their pizza prices in line with reality. There's some serious competition for pizza in SF.   One thing I did like was the general setup of the place. Casual, beer and wine.

Pi Bar, I hope you get better!

I went here on opening night, so I'm sure they were still perfecting their service- however I was really pleased and will definitely be back often. The pizza was really good, though I will say that even as a small lass, one slice wasn't enough for me, you'll probably want to get a whole pie if you're not dining solo. Me and my dining companion also split a Caprese salad, which I found to be overpriced (it was $13 for a very small salad) but tasty. Atmosphere was nice- a small number tables and bar seating- might be difficult to get a table once business picks up. It would be great if they had like a grab and go option for slices so one could drop by after work or before the bars to grab something on the quick,

Also, delicious Anthony's cookies is nearby so you can have a great little night of junk food :)
