This place ROCKS! Was visiting a friend and he recommended this place for Vietnamese food. I'm so glad we came here!! The food here is simply outstanding, portions are very generous, and won't break the bank.
Apparently when ordering pho, you have your choice of broth and type of noodle. I chose the beef broth with rice noodles and it was AWESOME! We also ordered the egg rolls and it was amazing!
I was extremely impressed with the menu selection since there was a bunch of dishes to choose from, not just pho!!
I'm actually bummed that my time in San Diego was very short. Otherwise, I would dined here everyday rather than the pricey restaurants in the Gaslamp District. I left this place extremely satisfied and with the full stomach!!
Looking forward to my next visit to San Diego and this place will definitely be on one of my stops! -

Went here last night because my girlfriend and I were craving some Vietnamese food. We needed to try a new place in order to find out what is better than what we have tried already in San Diego.
We both had pho. At least for me, the broth was good, but the noodles were slightly hard. They did have all the meats, so that was good. We also had an order of egg rolls. They were decent. They were super long and they could have given a few more pieces of lettuce.
The decor of the place was pretty nice. It looked pretty modern and clean, compared to other Vietnamese places. They served lots of items, so we'll probably be back to try some other dishes. -

Been here countless times and haven't encountered a dish we didn't enjoy. Our staples are the meatball springrolls. Those goodies are stuffed with a plethora of fresh herbs and the meat are seasoned so well. It's a must try!
Bun Bo Hue is also very good as well. A spicy beef noodle soup with chewy noodles. Forget pho for once and give this a try.
The only downsides are the msg in their soups and early closing time (9pm). -

dude, this place is really good. It looks kind of like a cheap place at first but the quality of the food is top shelf. i ordered the lemongrass beef and i just love how they cut the fat from the ends and they give you straight up meat. If im in the area ill be back for more. The food here kicks a$$!

Review from Leslie G.
I came here with some friends and was glad to see they have several vegetarian options. I just got the egg rolls, because I had already eaten earlier in the night. It came with 6 egg rolls for like $5 - good deal. They were tasty, but they came with a big plate of lettuce and cilantro. I didn't know what to do with that stuff, so it just sat there (I don't like cilantro, and wasn't in the mood for a big plate of plain lettuce). I also had a Thai iced tea, which was good.
I'd like to try a vegetarian soup next time, they looked great. Everything was reasonably priced.
The highlight of the meal, for me, was we were seated next to the tank of live lobster and crab. The crabs are separated from the lobster via a piece of plastic. However, one brave (or stupid) lobster got over on the crab side. So, we had front row seats for a crab vs. lobster battle! The crab was winning, but it wasn't really fair because the crab was enormous and the lobster's claws were taped so it couldn't really do anything but sit there. It was kind of weird that none of the employees did anything about it.
The service was slow-ish, but I noticed most of the people who were there when we were waiting to be seated were still there when we were finished, so I think it is the kind of place where people take their sweet time eating. I guess the servers just leave you alone unless you get their attention.
There are so many other places to try on Convoy, I don't know if I'd come back here before trying new places - but, if we were in the area and someone wanted Pho, I would definitely recommend it. -

Amazing egg rolls! The skins are chewy, blistery and super crispy. They're also served with a bunch of herbs and lettuce so technically I think it counts as a salad. Pho is alright, but not as good as some other pho places. The broken rice dishes are huge and delicious.
I really need to try the 7 courses of beef one day - only $20 for 2 people! The banh xeo also looks really good and people seem to be ordering something on a sizzling plate that smells awesome when it comes by. The only slight negative is that service can be a little on the slow side. -

I am not a connoisseur of this style of food, but this place is amazing. It took me about 20 minutes to decide what I wanted as the menu is huge. I went with the kung pao with beef, chicken and shrimp and it was to die for. I got the lunch portion which was only 7.75 and it was the perfect plate. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. I will definitely be back to try their pho and other entrees!

I am not sure exactly how many times we have eaten here over the past few years. We have had meals here and gotten food to go. Either way it has always been excellent! I am very fond of the their Pho and the broken rice dishes! I do love their spring rolls and think they are one of the best around, fresh and do not fall apart like so many. Their chicken wing appetizer is really good. Staff is always friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend this place for any Vietnamese food.

When I get a crave for pho, this is the place I always come!
Their soup is a good balance of stock & salt, and I love all the options you can add to your soup. I tried several other pho places around Convoy, and when I notice, this is always the place I come back for more.
Service can be slow on a busy day, but when you ask them, they will respond you as soon as possible. -
Review from Alan B.
More like 2.5 stars because I'm so confused! Is this an Asian version of Dicks Last Resort where they purposely try to jack you up with their awful service? Food was great, especially the garlic butter wings. But dang with as popular and busy place like this how about a little customer service training? There were four of us and we asked for waters along with our other drinks. We were brought three waters and when asked for the fourth, the chick had this look like "really, you can't just enjoy your coffee?"
Speaking of coffee, I swear their Vietnamese expresso improved my eyesight for at least four hours!
So if you don't mind substandard service bringing you superb food, then come here with some patience and leave the boxing gloves at home. -

I thought the food was pretty good. went there with some friends, out total bills came out to be $40 for 5 people, which is a pretty good deal. Excellent services and and food quality. i would love to come back here again.

Came here on a rainy afternoon with some buddies searching for Vietnamese food in San Diego and steered this way by a local.
The pho is decent here but nowhere near how good it is in LA and Orange county. Broth and noodles are good but rare steak came out a little dry. Overall the flavors came out a little underwhelming.
The spring rolls are hearty and definitely hit the spot. Get the Bo Bay Mon and you can make the spring rolls yourself which is fun for the whole family.
The baked catfish is the star of the show here. Although make sure you order ahead of time or there will be a bit of wait. It's not a juicy as the fried ones but it definitely felt healthier and my heart thanked me later for it. Considering I'm 25 pounds overweight, I think it's all baked everything from here on out. Oh and speaking of catfish, the catfish soup here is also worth a try. I like mine extra spicy.
Definitely pricier than other Vietnamese places or Vietnam. But if you're in San Diego this is the place to go for some Vietnamese.Listed in: Fish Market, Vietnamese

My fav pho place! Spring rolls are the biggest I've seen. Pho noodles are thin and firm, just the way I like it (unlike other places where noodles get fat and soggy). Only 4 stars because the broth is made too salty. Some of the waiters remind me of Vietnamese gangsters/mob. Pho sho!!

Review from James H.
Easily my favorite Pho joint in SD. I've only tried four things no their menu but all four of them are phenomenal. There's the egg roll, spring roll, pho tai chin, and bum bohue. The pho here unlike other places has noodles taht separate easily and are cooked so just one bite will break up the clump of noodles into easy to chew pieces. The broth is probably one of the best I've had as well. Great for any rainy afternoon. The Bum Bo Hue also features a great rich broth the only thing that disturbs me a little is the chunks of meat in it... You really don't know what any of the pieces are and why they went in your soup.
The only reason I take off a star for this delicious establishment is because the service is UNBELIEVABLY slow. The hosts and servers go around and are attentive but for a non-fancy pho restaurant you would expect pho to come out within 10 -20 min.. This place takes a solid 40 min. It's kind of ridiculous but if you have the time.. DEFINITELY come enjoy an amazing Vietnamese meal here. -

Phuong Trang is a fairly delicious Vietnamese & Chinese restaurant. Although the pho does not exactly grab my attention, the egg rolls (super egg rolls as I like to call them) are my absolute favorite thing to order whenever I come through the doors. These egg rolls are made much differently than the average Vietnamese restaurant and are almost guaranteed to make you come back for more.
Pros:
- The restaurant is cleaner than most Vietnamese restaurants (including the bathroom)
- Grilled pork, beef, and shrimp are delicious in the vermicelli bowls
- Food comes out in a fairly quick manner
- The space inside is large enough to hold large parties
- Large variety of menu items to choose from
- Takes credit/debit
Cons:
- The service is either good or bad. Never consistently good. Although, you must take into account that service at Asian restaurants are never that great
- The broth of the pho is not the best in the area
- You come out smelling like pho even if you didn't order pho. (bring cologne/perfume)
With that being said, I do recommend this restaurant to those who have not yet gone. Try the egg rolls!! -
Review from Alan W.
Came down to SD for my cousin's wedding awhile back. Went here with the relatives and experienced some very good Vietnamese/Chinese cuisine. And I think that the Vietnamese/Chinese aspect has to be emphasized - they excel in the kind of food that you'd expect to see at an Asian wedding (fried rice, crab, shrimp, etc.). As for the more straight-up Vietnamese fare like pho & spring rolls, there's much left to be desired. But if you're coming here with a large crowd, getting food family style does the trick. Got a wide sample of dishes and most ranged from good - delicious.
But yeah. Don't get the pho. -
Review from Thanh L.
The main Yelp photo for this place is hilarious! Who voted that to be the top pic, say "I"! LOL
This is one of the better Viet places in SD...and there are a lot of Viet food places! If you're not in the mood for pho, which is good here, try the canh chua and ca kho to (catfish). -

LEGIT Vietnamese food!! You know it's legit Vietnamese food when they have Banh Xeo (Viet Pancakes) and Canh Chua Ca (Viet Sour Catfish Soup).
It's hard to find legit Asian food at all in San Diego, but this place is awesome! If you've only had pho from the likes of Pho La Jolla, you'll love this place! Their huge portions of chicken wings and delicious egg rolls always bring me back!
Only thing is their service is kind of slow and although they have a parking lot, it's usually crowded when I go. -
Review from Greg E.
I'm starting to get addicted to Pho!
This was my second time overall having Pho, expect this time I added the rare steak. I ate here with fellow yelper Dean P. and he kind of walked me through the Pho experience.
Not crowded during the lunch hour and our food arrived within a decent time. We didn't have an issue with service like many of the other reviewers on here stated. I thought that the staff were professional and did their job accordingly.
I like the texture of the noodles and the fact that you can significantly enhance the flavor to your liking. They also give you a lot of noodles for its price. While it haven't won me over as far as Japanese Ramen (which is still my favorite type of noodles to eat), I can see myself becoming a loyal customer or at the very least become a loyal fan of some Pho!Listed in: Dining Out, Asian Cuisine, San Diego's Version of Little…

I'm Vietnamese, and I do have to say, I'm very, very particular about my Viet food. This place does a pretty good job of emulating what I have at home .... but nothing can beat home cooking. If ever, I'm bent over in hunger pangs from dreams of my mom's homecookings, I will venture over here - because it's as good as it will get in SD.
Canh Chua, Ca Kho -- yes I need both please, STAT. Awwww mama, I miss your food, I'll be home soon - but for right now Phuong Trang can get me through this trying time. -

I've been coming to this place since I was a kid. Sadly, I moved to the bay area now and only get to dine here when I go home for a visit, which is very infrequent (years). I love the Pho, Banh Hoi Thit Nuong ( Char-Grilled Pork Skewers with Rice Vermicelli Pancakes) , and Bo 7 Mon (7 beef dish). My dad especially loves the Bo 7 Mon. It's a pricey dish, but it is so good. If my sister doesn't join us for a meal, we still have to bring her back some take out.
I can't wait for my next visit home and to have a meal there. -

San Diego, CA
Easily the best Pho place in San Diego. Be wary of coming here during lunch hour; it fills up quickly and then the wait can be around an hour. The prices are reasonable, the food is hot and delicious, and the location is prime for the surrounding Asian businesses. I wish I could give my favorite Pho restaurant a 5 star, but the service is always just hit or miss. There are times when the waiters can be friendly and attentive, but there are oftentimes where they just run around, dropping food off at different tables and rush off to do the next more important thing than taking care of their customers. But I can't complain about the price or the food, so...here I am, writing a positive review!

Noodle is great, I love the soup. Highly recommend their deep fry chicken wings. Don't know how they make it but they're so delicious. Service and price are okay.

I came here a long time ago with my friends and friend's family, but never had a chance to come back again.
Finally, I am back!!!!!
I love their self-serve spring roll!!!! They are special and cool. You put your own portion of vegi and noodle. The portion is huge btw!
Next time, I want to try the catfish! Even though some of my friend said it was okay, many of my Vietnamese friends recommend that one. -

Los Angeles, CA
Very reasonably priced Vietnamese with reliably good if not entirely spectacular staples. The pho is excellent and is served with a bounty of fresh vegetables. Broken rice plates are terrific value, and the banh xeo was good if a little oily. Not as impressed with the spring rolls, which were served as an immense oortion but lacked the delicate and light shell that usually characterizes the Vietnamese versus Chinese version. The summer rolls, however, were very fresh and stuffed with shrimp and pork.

Damn, the reviews for this place were so good that I had to travel all the way from Berkeley to try it. Just kidding, I was in San Diego anyway.
I was thinking about grabbing dinner with some of my gal pals from home, and one was like, "I'm Marylynn Bui and we're eating here." Within the first minute, we had three servers drop by to ask if we wanted to order. If I couldn't decide in the first twenty seconds, I think they could've given us a little more time the second or third times. I'm a very indecisive guy.
Now this review is for what I ordered. I ordered Kung Pao Tofu. Why? I ask myself that every night, even though I ate there just last night. It was okay. Peanuts, garlic sauce, tofu, etc., all that stuff. I'm willing to come back to this restaurant to try other things. Man, I didn't try the things that people are raving about! Shit. I'll be back, San Diego. -

I used to be a Pho virgin. And then I came here. Their vegetarian Pho is no joke. OMG. It was seriously delicious!
I was concerned that there may not be enough vegetarian options for a pseudo-vegetarian (or flexitarian) person like me, but they have an entire page on their menu dedicated to vegetarian options! How awesome!!
This is place is always bumpin, so make sure you go early and be ready to wait before you get seated!
You know what they say....once you get pho, you don't wanna eat anything else no mo'! -

My absolutely favorite place to go to for Pho in san diego. I have not come across a more authentic Pho place than Phuong Trang.
You can tell by the skin on the egg rolls that it's genuine. Only place I've come across in san diego with very authentic egg rolls.
Their Pho bowls are very flavorful, there has obviously a lot of time has been put to make the soup base. -

Despite service being pretty horrible today for my party of 7, I just gotta say their eggrolls are yum-yum-delicious.

Review from Connie L.
Came here for the eggrolls and pho. The eggrolls here are really good since they use a different type of paper instead of the brown ones. The paper has a bit of a chewier texture which I really like.
The pho broth was really good. It tasted clean and came with a lot of meat.
Service here was eh. After flaggin down 2 different servers asking for our check and 10 minutes later, we finally received it.
Leave your patience at the door and just come for the food. -

San Diego, CA
Had lunch there for the first time ever and was very happy. Thank goodness for other yelpers who have gone there and done that because we were able to wade through their HUMONGOUS and somewhat intimidating menu.
We had the Pork Spare Ribs in Fish Sauce, absolutely delish, tasted vaguely Filipino. Meat was tender but the "rib" part of the description might be a tad generous, more like pork chunks.
Cubed Beef with Fried Rice - Comes out sizzling on a fajita type of metal dish, with lots of fresh onions. The fried rice that came along with it was tasty but on the oily side...the plain rice that comes along with the meal was better.
Fresh spring rolls- BIG, very fresh, everything inside was crunchy, plentiful and the peanut sauce that comes with was delicious.
Fried eggrolls/springroll- Bummer, didn't get them but saw everyone around me eating them and they looked killer, will try next time.
None of the dishes above were overly huge but they were just right for two people w/a bit left over. As many people said, service is not overly friendly but it is quick, efficient and when you ask for something, you get it right away. Nice, big restaurant, we were there for lunch at 12:30 and interestingly enough, there were many single people eating alone. That says a lot for a restaurant's good vibe when so many women were cool with eating alone.
My friend and I decided to stay for a long lunch and even after we paid the bill, wrapped our leftovers and sat there for way too long, the servers kept asking us if we needed refills and quietly took away all our used clutter....will def be back and this time will bring the family and try the catfish. -

This place is kinda hit or miss for vietnamese dishes.
The carmelized catfish and the canh chua are really really good. This stuff is pretty legit.
Their rice and noodle dishes are kinda greasy and average.
Waiters are pretty typical of Vietnamese restaurants - they don't bother you with chit chat and don't stop by very often. I don't interpret this as being rude, it seems to just be the norm at every vietnamese place.
Atmosphere is kinda boring and like all vietnamese places the tables and chairs feel just a tad sticky due to all that fish sauce! I think all the vietnamese people know what I'm talking about.
Prices are typical of an established restaurant with a solid reputation and it seems like a lot of SD people likes this place. However, this place just doesn't have the flavor, courtesy, cleanliness, or atmosphere that warrant these prices.
and parking here is the WORST! This is like the smallest parking lot ever. -
Review from Shaye G.
The Hubby and I had a choice to go to one of our favorite swanky restaurants in North Park, or to try out this place for the first time. We decided to be daring and headed to Phuong Trang. So glad we did!
Pork Spare Ribs in Fish Sauce - YUM
Garlic Butter Wings (we did the half order) - sinfully YUM
Cubed Beef with Fried Rice - comes out sizzling - YUM - and I don't know what it is, but I loved their fried rice. So simple and so tasty!
Cat Fish Steaks in Fish Sauce - good, but Hubby loved it more than I did.
I would love to go back and try the whole baked catfish which I believe it's advised that you order in advance. Service is ok, but wasn't horrible. They delivered our catfish to another table so we were waiting...awhile. But the server was very apologetic.
We'll definitely be back! -

Gave this place a try on a Friday night because I was craving some Pho. I usually drive to Mira Mesa and I have been hoping to find a place a little closer to my house.
I arrived at about 5:30pm which is still early for most Asian themed restaurants. The place was pretty full already and the clientele was comprised of a wide array of nationalities (a good sign I hoped). We were seated promptly and took our time viewing the quite expansive menu.
I went with the Pho Tai (Rice noodle filled with rare slices of steak).
I am not into all the tendons and junk, not criticizing it's just not my thing. Instead of ordering the same old egg or spring rolls, I ordered Nem Nuong Cuon (B.B.Q Pork Meatball Rolls. 2 rice paper rolls filled with b.b.q pork meatball, lettuce, Thai basil, bean sprouts, and vermicelli noodles. Served with peanut sauce). They were pretty tasty and arrived before our dinner in the timely manner you would expect for an appetizer.
My dining companion went with Com Suong Nuong (Char-Grilled Pork Chop with Steamed Rice, Marinated and char-grilled pork chop served with steamed rice, cucumbers, tomatoes, and fish sauce) and commented that the meat was moist and flavorful and gave it 4 stars.
As far as the Pho, it's not a complicated dish but I seem to have problems finding places that measure up. It arrived in a large bowl and was nice and hot. The broth was probably the most memorable part of the dish. It seemed to pack a little heat (spice). In order to compare it against my regular haunts, I added bean sprouts, 2 squirts of lime, a moderate portion of mint leaves and threw in some sliced jalapeno peppers.
I thought the noodles were cooked just right and the steak was lean. It was not the most generous portion of meat I have seen in a Pho dish, but it was not as small as some places I have tried. Overall the flavor was pretty good. The spicy taste I mentioned earlier stayed consistent while I was eating the Pho. I don't think the small about of peppers I added cause the spiciness, it must have been from the way the cook seasoned the broth. I was quite delighted by the flavor and this trait set the dish aside from many of the other Pho establishments I have frequented.
Overall I give this place a 4 stars. I will definitely give them another try and venture out and order some other dishes besides Pho. The service was very prompt and the waiters and waitresses who served us were very friendly. Follow-up reviews to come. -

I'm giving them 3 stars because the Pho is really good. I also tried the spring rolls and the bbq meatball rolls, both were good as well. I would have easily rated them 4, but the service was horrendous. The server moved like a snail in molasses. I waited 20 minutes for my Thai Tea, and had to ask for it three times before she brought it to me and the Pho took almost half an hour to get to my table. The food is good, but I think the service was bad enough to keep me from going back in there.
