I came in to repair the mount on my vr 18-55 mm lens.
For a quarter of the cost to buy a new lens, these guys replaced and fixed the part within 20 mins during my lunch break. I had to shoot an event that evening - luckily photo tech fixed it well and quickly!

Bravo- only place I'll bring my camera in for repair.

fast, easy, 6 month guarantee on repairs

    Great place, honest employees.

I came directly to the 34th St location (I think the 13th St and Nassau St locations send Canon SLRs there). The lens of my SLR was stuck and not focusing. Within a couple minutes, an employee (Shawn?) messed with it and fixed it. Didn't even charge because it was such a simple thing and nothing was actually broken.

I trust they won't rip me off and would def take my camera there for any future repairs.

Well, I had to make another trip back here.  My G10 fell off a table and the lens broke.  I know, it was stupid and totally my fault, but I love this camera too much to let it go to waste.  We've been around the globe, shot tens of thousands of photos, and I've worn the body down to raw aluminum in so many places.  I know, my camera has seen a lot of action, but I can't justify (or afford) to drop $600 on the latest Canon G series.

So I brought it back for a lens replacement, got the same quoted price as my first visit and I told them to go right to it!  I received the same great guarantee on parts and workmanship and I'm back shooting again!

What some people need to understand is that yes, for the less expensive consumer grade cameras, repairs can be quite costly and you may be better off purchasing a new camera.  For prosumer and professional cameras, this is the place to go.  When you have a camera that does everything you want it to, and you really take a liking to it, it is so much more cost effective to have the repair done than get a replacement.  Plus the workmanship here is incredible and the overall experience was better than any repair shop I have been to, camera or otherwise.

I have also sent a few of my SX-70 toting friends here for some major repairs and they have nothing but praise for the work that was done.

If my first experience with Photo Tech wasn't so positive, I would never come back, but they have me, I'm a customer for life.  This place is the best.

I had gotten sand in the lens of my G11, and brought the camera to the 34th St location (opposite B&H) for a repair estimate. I picked up the camera estimate the next morning, and dropped off the camera that afternoon. I was told it may take up to five days, depending on parts' availability and their workload. The next afternoon I received a call that the camera was ready.

I was very happy with the service and with the pricing of Photo Tech, and would definitely recommend them to other photographers.

Photo Tech comes highly recommended. I had my 1970s Polaroid SX-70 repaired by the repairman Jose and it works perfectly now. Jose is one of the pre-eminent experts in fixing old Polaroid cameras -- even the Impossible Project uses him. He is a true maestro with over 30 years of experience. Because Polaroid parts are now extinct, he uses his own judgement and craftsmenship in tuning the internal sensors and finding suitable parts.

Best perk is that each Polaroid repair has a 90-day guarantee. With the SX-70, I had to come back twice for a few tweaks. All of them were for free, and the camera came back perfectly adjusted.

OLYMPUS OWNERS: This store location does NOT service OLYMPUS cameras.

Though their website states that they do service Olympus, I made a special trip to this store only to be told it is in fact a different store location (confusingly, with a different store name - Chrysler Camera Repair) that serves Olympus.

Unfortunately I was in a HUGE time crunch to get my camera fixed before a trip abroad and had gone out of my way to Photo Tech, just to be redirected uptown.

From reading other reviews, it is clear that I'm not the only one who has had this experience. Photo Tech, please clearly state on your website which store locations service which camera types so no one else wastes their time going to the wrong store location!

Recently I had my second trip to Photo Tech, a mom and pop shop near Union Square.  And once again, they surpassed my expectations.  Same guy Abraham aka Abe was extemely helpful.

My Nikon D40 camera slipped and fell recently - the lens wasn't locking back onto the camera.  I took it in, thinking it would be a big ordeal to get it fixed, got an estimate of $44 - and it was fixed the next afternoon.  They don't work on anything before you approve the estimate.  And if there is something else they find, they will call to advise you.

Nicely cleaned and returned to me as good as can be.  I like their honesty and work ethic.  Good people.  Definitely don't want another camera to break but if it does, I know where I'll be going.  Also they have a full cleaning of a camera for $40.

I previously reviewed Photo Tech, after being told that they didn't service my model camera (Canon EOS Digital Rebel Xsi). Instead I'd have to take it to their other location, which was inconvenient for me to get to. After I posted my review, they sent me an email to fix the situation. They said I could come back in, and they'd deliver my camera to their other location for me. Simply stated, these guys really care about customer service.

In the end, it thankfully turned out that the issue was only my lens, the irony being that it was able to get that repaired at this location. It took 8 days to be repaired (within their 7-10 days window), and now it's working great!

Bonus: due to my having to go back to the shop after being turned away the first time, they let me rent a lens for four days (Thurs-Sun--returning Monday morning) for the price of just two days. Very cool folks, will definitely return!

Photo-tech is great; I never used them until recently, but when my digital camera died I took it to them rather than buy a new one. They examined it, gave me an estimate accounting for parts and labor, and had it ready when they said they would. They also guarantee their work for six months from the date it's completed. They have over 50 years experience, which tells me they're not just a fly-by-night.

I have a few other cameras I have to take to them, because I know I can count on them to do an excellent job. Oh, and my roommate's camera's lens jammed and wouldn't extend properly, so he took it to Photo-tech; the guy took it in the back, cleaned the lens assembly, got it working almost as good as new, and didn't charge him!

Photo Tech Employees are the Camera Repair Wizards!

I first made use of their repair services on a lens issue with my Pentax 35mm SLR back in December 2000, and still go to them whenever my point-and-shoot Canon Powershot / Digital Elph cameras have mechanical lens / system card issues, which tends to happen after a year or two of use.

I have had no issues with Photo Tech not being able to fix any camera that I have brought in for whatever malfunction it had been experiencing.

Also, their repair turnaround time is reasonable and they have met or exceeded their estimate time.  Exceeded, as in they have fixed my camera sooner than what they initially quoted.

Owner, Paul N., is quite responsive to customers' needs.  That is one HUGE advantage of a small mom & pop business over big box stores.

My only qualms with this establishment are that they can improve their hours (it's hard for me to visit since I work outside NYC):
    M-F: 8am-6pm
Sa: 10am-3pm (Closed in July & Aug on Sa)
    Su: Closed

I tend to prefer to fix my broken cameras if they're fixable rather than plunking a little bit more for a newer model.  I guess I hate to junk my gadgets.

So we now know that  my Canon S400  does not bounce.  Nope, it drops and smashes the LCD screen. Digital Screens are expensive to replace, and although the do it yourself instructions are out there on the net, I'd rather pay a professional.

The guys at the counter were nice, knowledgeable and I felt great going there.  I used the website to get an estimate,  and my camera is being repaired for $89.00.

The shop looks busy, well organized and the counter help were efficient.

I'll give them 4 stars, and I am even gong to bring my also non-bouncy  Nikon later.  (after all, a 35mm is really a museum piece now)  Oh, but the stories my Nikon could tell....

These guys get an A+ for service.

I brought my Canon SD880 in for warranty service (my 1 year was almost up), because of a lens issue, and they told me they cover that type of service.  They checked out the camera and warned me that it could potentially be water/sand damage, which is not covered under warranty, but they would check it out anyway.  I was leaving for vacation in a couple weeks, and they told me it would be done within a week if it was fixable.  A few days later, they called me and told me that the mechanic checked it out, and it was water/sand damage (so I would have to pay), but if they shipped it to Canon, Canon might just fix it for free.  However, it would take a few weeks.  I told them I was going on vacation, and they said that I could come in and get a loaner point and shoot for free.

I went in, got a loaner (which was not an amazing, but still pretty serviceable point-n-shoot), and then went off on vacation.  When I came back, i received a call from them - my camera had been fixed by Canon for free!  I laud them for a great job of communicating everything along the way while also trying to do what was best for me financially.  The free loaner didn't exactly hurt too.  Would definitely take my cameras to them again.

I have nothing negative to say about this place. Brought my Nikon point and shoot to Africa, got sand in it surprise surprise. Photo Tech's prices are pretty standard if a little below what you'd expect. My camera came back (four business days later) looking better than when I bought it; I don't know if they like... polished it or something. In any case I'll be back here should I have any more problems. They give a six-month guarantee on their repairs.

Also, instead of instantly taking the project, they suggested a few different ways I might be able to get it fixed or a new camera free of charge via other establishments.

    Phototech rocks!

In January I took my Canon PowerShot in to CameraLand uptown for repair. They diagnosed a bad sensor, told me the camera had to be sent out to Canon, $80 estimate. They told me not to expect it back for 3-4 weeks.

3-4 weeks go by and I call CameraLand for an update. They said they'd call Canon and call me back. No return phone call. More weeks go by, more phone calls from me to CameraLand.

Long story short - at the two-month-plus mark, they finally track down my camera at Canon and tell me it will take 10 more days to repair! At this point, I asked for my un-repaired camera back.

I took it down to Photo-Tech and explained the problem. The woman at the counter shows my camera to a tech sitting at a workbench. He takes one look and immediately says, "this is a known problem with the Canon PowerShot. It's a warranty repair, and they should fix it for free."

They sent it out to Canon with the same caveat of 3-4 weeks. Two weeks later, I get a call back from Photo-Tech. My camera is fixed, cleaned and good as new. Total cost? $13 for the shipping to Canon.

Photo-Tech, you guys are amazing in my book and I will recommend you to anyone without reservation!

Sent in a zoom lens that had been dropped (Nikkor 18-135mm AF) to be repaired. They replaced the f/stop and 2 other components for $150. Not too bad. Shipping was $15 on top of that but I'm 10 minutes outside of Manhattan so I picked it up. The lens is worth about $300 and they offer a 90 day warranty so I would say you can't go wrong. Staff is friendly and repair takes only 1 week. Not too shabby.

I dropped my buddy's Nikon D70 and cracked the UV filter, couldn't unscrew it off and was scared the lens was messed up too.  After buying the $15 filter at J&R, they recommended that I go to Photo Tech on 13th st to get it fixed.  They did.  They removed the busted/dented filter, replaced the threads that got messed up and checked the lens and made sure it was OK. Thank God. Supposed to have been $81 but after asking them if they could do better since it is a recession and all, they dropped it down to $55.

Great service. Great work. Quick too. Strongly recommend them.

Reliable and fast*, Photo-tech is my first stop when things go a screwy with the cameras.

So far I've replaced the shutter on my Pentax Spotmatic with them, quick fast job that wasn't too expensive. As an added bonus, they've been the only outfit so far that's been able to provide the proper replacement battery for the Spotmatic (Adorama, B&H, Willoughby's, and Radio Shack have all been busts).

Repaired 2 broken shutters on my Nikon D70, repairs taking about a week. Price was a bit higher, but everything's more expensive when it's digital. Added bonus includes a cleaning of the sensor as well as a general cleaning of the body.

    * - The only reason this place doesn't get 5 stars is that when I returned my D70 for warranty work, it took 3.5 weeks to get it repaired. Supposedly the parts were on backorder from Nikon, and they did fully repair everything and honored the warranty no questions asked, so I was happy. But here's what the math comes down to: When I was a  paying customer, the camera was ready in 3-4 days; when I was a non revenue producing warranty repair, it took 3+ weeks and that's AFTER I had to call up on it 3 times. If you need your warranty work done by a certain date (let's say for a paid job), you're gonna be kinda screwed there.

They fixed my manual Nikon film camera in less than a week for about $140 for a shutter repair and light meter repair, plus some cleaning and light shield stuff, plus tax.

Thing is: I dropped it off to get just the shutter repaired... they then quoted me for the other stuff which I said "okay" to... but the guy on the phone didn't sound like he was the same guy who inspected my camera because he was just kind of reading down a list.    So... not sure if I got upsold or ripped off because I didn't ask to speak with the repair guy and/or ask exactly why the quoted repairs were neccessary.  I should've but I just okayed it because it sounded reasonable, they had a good rating on yelp, and I wanted the camera to be awesome when I got it back.  To that end, seems like they did a good job, but can't go all the way to 5 stars because of that  hangup.

Otherwise, smooth and friendly process.   I'd go back (hope I don't have to) and have since recommended them to a friend.

This is my first review and it couldn't have been for a better experience. As a new small business owner myself, I can appreciate the importance of getting feedback, both positive and negative. Today, my experience with Photo Tech was definitely all positive and nothing negative. I needed to have my Nikon Digital SLR sensor cleaned and also asked them to take a look to see why my lens wouldn't auto-focus. They gave me a reasonable estimate for both services and told me to come back in an hour.

I figured I'd give them extra time and came back two hours later but I'm sure that was unnecessary. Without having a chance to even pull out my repair ticket, the guy behind the counter went to go get my camera and told me that all I owed them was the cost of the cleaning. There was nothing wrong with my lens other than that there was an unnecessary lens filter that was causing my problem.

I'm sure there are other honest camera repair centers out there but these guys definitely know their stuff and operate with great integrity. I hope no one has a problem with their camera but if you do, Photo Tech is the place to take it to.

When I examined my Nikon 18-200mm lens after it fell and saw loose parts shaking around inside it, I thought it would be a total loss.  Not so.  I brought it to Photo Tech, dropped off the lens with the friendly guy at the counter, they gave me an estimate the next day (around $300 to fix) and I picked it up the next week. The lens was not only as good as new, but actually sharper than before.

Dropped my brand new camera and the tilted lens wouldn't retract anymore. Took the camera into Photo Tech and the friendly guy at the front counter said he'd let a technician look at it. FIVE minutes later, I was stunned to see my camera returned to me good as new, and the repair that I thought would cost me an arm and a leg ended up being FREE. Apparently, he was able to "pop" the lens back in.

These guys were a major lifesaver. This camera was bought for a big trip that I took two days later. None of the other photo shops I went to were nearly as helpful.

I brought my manual Nikon into Photo Tech to have them check out a weird glitch; they diagnosed and corrected it in a day, and then _waived their fee_ since it was "such an easy fix."

They also gave me the details for a place that works on Contax bodies, which was very helpful.

Couldn't be happier...fast, friendly, good repairs, and very reasonable pricing.  I'll send everyone I know to Photo-tech.

I just created a Yelp account specifically in order to write a rave review on this place. I've received nothing but the best service here! Today, I stopped by to get some advice on a little problem I've been having, and they replaced my battery and gave me a new camera strap for free! The guys who work here are the BEST. So sweet. Tell all your friends.
