I'm a big fan of this place. I have been going to Cynthia to have my hair done for about a year and a half. She is fantastic! As most ladies will attest, it can be very difficult to find the "right" person to do your hair. Cynthia really listens to what you want and always ensures you look beautiful when you walk out the door. After years of struggling to get the right cut and color I feel like I finally found it. She does wonderful highlights (finally I'm the correct shade of blond w/ no brassiness!) and the cuts are cute and livable. Over the years I experienced far too many cuts that only looks good immediately after they do the blow out but are impossible for me to maintain in my daily routine. With Cynthia my hair always looks good even when I try to ineptly style it.
My guilty pleasures are facials & massage and Kim does the best of both. She makes the customer feel so at ease. We usually spend the first half of my treatment laughing and by the second half I am so relaxed I fall asleep. She does amazing things with massage - I thought I would need to go see a Dr over some shoulder problems I was having - but after just an hour massage with her my pain was gone.
I had a perfectly acceptable massage and facial here over the weekend. Nothing exciting, nothing special, nothing to write home about, nothing to embellish or tell you about, just acceptable.
The end.
I just got my haircut an hour ago. I highly recommend Paul. He is patient, skilled, and very personable. The first cut is free, and returning customers are charged reduced prices.
My experience dates back a year, but it was so astonishingly awful, that I have to report it now.
I came in to Phoenix Rising requesting a loose body wave for my long, thin hair. I'm not from the area, so I usually have this service performed by a regular stylist, but I was feeling eager and I thought I'd risk it. Considering that the charge was over $120 for the treatment and by the looks of the cute salon, I thought I'd get some quality.
Wrong, wrong, wrong -- big time. I emerged with a head full of tight curls, a la 1980s perm-fest. I should have known, when I saw the girl rolling my hair in rather small curlers, that this was headed toward disaster. Unfortunately, by then it was too late and despite the fact that my "stylist" (or shall we say "disaster master") assured me that my curls would loosen and fall in a few days, I spent the next 10 months flat-ironing my hair and my normally healthy, soft hair became brutally brittle and dull.
Of course, I should have demanded my money back and/or some kind of fix, but I was so traumatized that I couldn't bring myself to return. I suffered in silence... and lost 30 minutes of sleep each night on account of my new flat-iron morning ritual.
On the bright side, I've never had such appreciation for my silky, fine, STRAIGHT hair. This is why one should always stick with their regular stylist and never attempt these wild-exotic services until years of trust have been established.
Beware! This salon needs much better quality control!
Erin A. left the Grand Ave / Lakeshore stroll for the rolling hills of Montclair. We had to visit her in her new digs and were pleasantly surprised to find such a comfortable atmosphere.
Nice place, same exceptional cut from a professional and good tea.
Only complaint is the waiting room chairs are too long for short people (5'2) and bar cuts into the back of the legs, needs a cushion.
My husband and I LOVE Phoenix Rising Salon and Day Spa. After years of having my husband get sloppy haircuts for Supercut prices, we finally found a salon in the East Bay which gives my husband the cut he likes in a clean and professional style. No more funky grow-outs!
Both of us see Camille, who is absolutely great at listening to what you want in a cut and for color.
Camille, is also fun, friendly, and absolutely delightful (as is everyone at the salon).
I get wonderful compliments on all the cuts and colors I've had with Camille. She's been great at keeping my style-looking fresh and keeping up with my constant "chop it off" and "let's grow it out" requests.
Both my mother and I have our hair done at Phoenix Rising Salon. I work in the media, so a bad hair day can be ridiculed by thousands in an instant. I fully trust Cynthia, the owner, whose experience and professionalism shine through. Just give her a photo or a specific idea and she'll take it from there. Kimberly does my eyebrows and I would recommend her as well. She works quickly, accurately and painlessly. My mother and I were previous clients of Lisa, who is now back at this salon after moving to another one. She's a very talented stylist too. My biggest piece of advice to anyone on such matters is to promote good communication between you and your stylist. Be very clear about what you want.
