The rooms are on the small side, but if you're used to traveling to large metropolitan cities, this will not bother you. We're not talking Manhattan small here, people. The rooms are also done in relatively period decor, so expect them to have that old world feel to them. If you're looking for something more modern, the Hotel George is around the corner. Have at it!
Overall, we enjoyed our stay here. The location was central to all of the things we wanted to see and we booked a few weeks in advance so we were able to get a fantastic rate. The staff was super friendly and nice.
NOTE: You can save the $40 on overnight parking on weekends by parking in the municipal lot across the street. We found this out from a staff member, and it worked out great for us!
My friend got married, drinks and the reception were at the Phoenix Park.
Perks are the location, its cozy feel and the great staff. Front desk to the servers, the staff was friendly, efficient and eager to please.
The space itself was nice but a little on the low-ceilinged, close quartered side. Not elegant but definitely doable.
I didn't get a room because they were out of my price range but word is they were nice.
Discovered drops of dried blood on pillow right before going to bed. Yikes!
Called front desk, he replied, we'd like to come to see it. Front desk guy with manager came up, looked at the dried blood and said "oh, so sorry. Want a new pillow." ???? Is this really the best you can do? Dried blood, that's just gross.
BTW, first room had a fan that was so loud, I thought I was in a construction zone. Second room had the dried blood. The rooms are really small, but the bed is quite comfortable (down blanket and pillow top). Still, the dried blood thing just got to me, so I was a little too grossed out to care. Also, the toiletries were sub-par.
We got this hotel from bidding on Priceline in which the Phoenix is described as a luxury boutique. Overall, we were happy with our stay here and found the Irish decor and influence quite charming. If we had a choice, we'd stay here again.
Pros:
1) Location (one block away from Union Station-transportation & food)
2) Plush, comfortable bed
3) Clean
4) Accomodating staff
5) Flat screen
Negs:
1) Cramped quarters (the bed took up most of the space hence the flat screen)
2) Pedestal sink - no counter space, had to store our things on a shelf for towels.
3) The vent in our room was oddly placed and kept blowing cold air over the bed.
4) Furniture in the closet VERY out of date and sort of dirty looking
Friend threw his engagement party here this past weekend (or should I say his wifey to be arranged everything ... and she was nice enough to ask us to join in the festivities).
So, I actually didn't sleep in the hotel - but I got to run around the various floors and experience all 9 floors in their full glory ... which is to say, we visited the Dubliner bar downstairs on the first floor (it's attached to the hotel). We partied on the 2nd floor "reception and bar" area, where Archie the bartender took very good care of us. Visited several rooms in between and we spent the rest of the evening in the penthouse suite on the 9th floor (great views, btw).
Overall, the rooms are nice and the staff is accommodating. Rooms have some kind of older Irish theme going on (Dubliner downstairs, Kelly's Irish Times around the corner - makes complete sense) ... which makes the nice flat screens hanging on the wall seem out of place and odd. But whatever - you'll never hear me complaining about flat screens.
So why only four stars? Two words - rusted railings. Specifically, rusted out railings nine floors UP on the patio. Hello? Penthouse suite, nice patio and expansive views of the city - and you can't go out on the patio because if you lean on the railing you'll plummet to your death? Bah. Do you know HOW HARD it is to control drunk and belligerent party goers and tell them not to go outside? How about drunk and belligerent party goers who need their damn nicotine fix?!? Exactly. Not pretty. Luckily Kelly's Irish Times took all party goers in and saved the evening.
Cute little place. Convenient location, one block from Union Station and a couple more from the hill. The rooms are on the small-ish side, but cool - and the bathroom is nice and boutique-y. There's a nice big plasma tv, high speed internet (for free!), comfy beds and yummy chocolates on your pillows when you go to bed. The front desk is not terribly helpful (no idea whatsoever of what was around the hotel as far as eats, stores, etc) I'd stay there again if I was back in town on business - probably somewhere else if I was here for pleasure. Not bad for the price.
This was such a fun hotel.
Upon entry, you are taken aback. It seems old. The tapestry and carpets are worn in, and the elevator takes forever. But, once you get to your room, it seem so regal. At least, that was my experience. I got a top level, corner room. A tall bed, puffy bed. The ceilings are taller there. The service is always on time. There's a fun little pub on premises too. -- stars based on category, not food
Not a bad hotel located near the Capital and Union Station. If you have meetings in the area it is convenient, otherwise I would chose a hotel closer to Dupon Circle. The rooms are top notch and on par with a Marriot, but the gym was closed for renovation although their website did not reflect this.
