This is a great hotel with a lot of charm! The rooms are smaller, but definitely cozy and very Irish. The bathroom was excellent and the hotel, overall, is in a great location! I was able to walk here from Union Station as it was so close. The Capitol is also very close by and in walking distance.

There is a fishy smell in the elevator for some reason, but wasn't anything that I couldn't handle. I'm assuming it is because the entrance to The Dubliner restaurant is right near it and they do have many fish dishes.

I will definitely be returning to this hotel again when I return to D.C.!

Location is great, right in the centre of town with Union Station just nearby.

Rooms are very small and dis-organised, a bit of a hazard!  Others have said they enjoyed the beds but I found them a little uncomfortable, a little high up too.

Front desk staff were ok, helpful. Cleaning staff are more friendly than front desk staff.

Worst part about our experience here was the building site next door, right by our window; noisy, dirty, and being woken up at 7am by construction is extremely annoying - I don't recommend this hotel while this work is going on.

Free wifi is good, the reason why I didn't give a 2 star rating!  Other guests we spoke to enjoyed the adjoining Irish restaurant but we never got to try it.

I stayed here last summer and thought the rooms were nice and cozy, the staff was super friendly, and the room rates were on par considering the convenient location (across the street from Union Station). This is not a modern hotel with room service or even a bar. However, there are so many good places to eat within a 2 minute walk that it doesn't matter. I really enjoyed my stay and will be back.

Phoenix Park is a cute boutique hotel with rooms named after well-known Washingtonians. With our party of five, we got an upgrade to a suite, the Kerry Suite to be exact. Our room was two levels, both pretty tiny. Throw in a spiral staircase, and an extra cot and you've got a room that was a little difficult to walk around in. Still, overall ambiance was decent and the hotel was easy to get to by bus.

Hotel also has an attached entrance to Dubliner's next door.

We got this hotel from bidding on Priceline in which the Phoenix is described as a luxury boutique.  Overall, we were happy with our stay here and found the Irish decor and influence quite charming.  If we had a choice, we'd stay here again.

    Pros:
    1) Location (one block away from Union Station-transportation & food)
    2) Plush, comfortable bed
    3) Clean
    4) Accomodating staff
    5) Flat screen

    Negs:
    1) Cramped quarters (the bed took up most of the space hence the flat screen)
    2) Pedestal sink - no counter space, had to store our things on a shelf for towels.
    3) The vent in our room was oddly placed and kept blowing cold air over the bed.
    4) Furniture in the closet VERY out of date and sort of dirty looking

Friend threw his engagement party here this past weekend (or should I say his wifey to be arranged everything ... and she was nice enough to ask us to join in the festivities).

So, I actually didn't sleep in the hotel - but I got to run around the various floors and experience all 9 floors in their full glory ... which is to say, we visited the Dubliner bar downstairs on the first floor (it's attached to the hotel). We partied on the 2nd floor "reception and bar" area, where Archie the bartender took very good care of us. Visited several rooms in between and we spent the rest of the evening in the penthouse suite on the 9th floor (great views, btw).

Overall, the rooms are nice and the staff is accommodating. Rooms have some kind of older Irish theme going on (Dubliner downstairs, Kelly's Irish Times around the corner - makes complete sense) ... which makes the nice flat screens hanging on the wall seem out of place and odd. But whatever - you'll never hear me complaining about flat screens.

So why only four stars? Two words - rusted railings. Specifically, rusted out railings nine floors UP on the patio. Hello? Penthouse suite, nice patio and expansive views of the city - and you can't go out on the patio because if you lean on the railing you'll plummet to your death? Bah. Do you know HOW HARD it is to control drunk and belligerent party goers and tell them not to go outside? How about drunk and belligerent party goers who need their damn nicotine fix?!? Exactly. Not pretty. Luckily Kelly's Irish Times took all party goers in and saved the evening.

Rates here vary. I either luck out, or find another place. There have been many times when they were looking for over 389 a night- and for the size of the rooms here, forget it!

The lobby is cool, and the attached eatery is great! I have found the rooms to be small but functional. What is really awesome is the location. Right by Union Station and very close to Hall of the States. No need for me to rent a car or use taxi service.

If you can get a decent rate, go for it!  Otherwise, there are plenty of hotels to choose from!

My friend got married, drinks and the reception were at the Phoenix Park.

Perks are the location, its cozy feel and the great staff. Front desk to the servers, the staff was friendly, efficient and eager to please.

The space itself was nice but a little on the low-ceilinged, close quartered side. Not elegant but definitely doable.

I didn't get a room because they were out of my price range but word is they were nice.

This was such a fun hotel.

Upon entry, you are taken aback.  It seems old.  The tapestry and carpets are worn in, and the elevator takes forever.  But, once you get to your room, it seem so regal.  At least, that was my experience.  I got a top level, corner room.  A tall bed, puffy bed.  The ceilings are taller there.  The service is always on time.  There's a fun little pub on premises too.  -- stars based on category, not food

Discovered drops of dried blood on pillow right before going to bed.  Yikes!

Called front desk, he replied, we'd like to come to see it.  Front desk guy with manager came up, looked at the dried blood and said "oh, so sorry.  Want a new pillow."  ????  Is this really the best you can do?  Dried blood, that's just gross.

BTW, first room had a fan that was so loud, I thought I was in a construction zone.  Second room had the dried blood.  The rooms are really small, but the bed is quite comfortable (down blanket and pillow top).  Still, the dried blood thing just got to me, so I was a little too grossed out to care.  Also, the toiletries were sub-par.

I stayed here for 2 nights recently and LOVED it! It was substantially cheaper than anything else in the vicinity (maybe because I booked far in advance but it seems cheaper overall), great location, etc.

I feel like they did a good job giving the rooms a B&B feel without the usual creepiness (like you've broken into someone's house and you're sleeping in their bed) I feel when staying in an actual B&B. The wallpaper in the room was HIDEOUS, though, but I rather liked the rest of the decor and the bed was incredibly comfortable. Everything worked just as it should, and the only problems I had were minor (ex. batteries died in the tv remote) and fixed with what was, to me, astonishing speed.

The staff was AMAZING. Everyone, from the front desk to the housekeeping to the restaurant staff, were incredibly sweet and polite and helpful, I was really struck by that.

Oh and the food at the Dubliner (and therefore, the room service) is excellent. Really really good.

I don't usually stay in hotels in DC; I'm from there, so when I come back into town I usually stay with friends but I will absolutely stay here again if I ever need a hotel in the city.

The rooms are on the small side, but if you're used to traveling to large metropolitan cities, this will not bother you.  We're not talking Manhattan small here, people.  The rooms are also done in relatively period decor, so expect them to have that old world feel to them.  If you're looking for something more modern, the Hotel George is around the corner.  Have at it!

Overall, we enjoyed our stay here.  The location was central to all of the things we wanted to see and we booked a few weeks in advance so we were able to get a fantastic rate.  The staff was super friendly and nice.

NOTE:  You can save the $40 on overnight parking on weekends by parking in the municipal lot across the street.  We found this out from a staff member, and it worked out great for us!

Well, I stayed here one night and their HVAC system was broken. The room was tiny and outdated as well. Unfortunately, I stayed on the top floor and it was hotter than sin out and in the room!

Expensive, rude, and frankly not worth staying at! With all of the amazing hotels in D.C., don't waste your time nor money. Awful experience!

We stayed here for 3 nights over last weekend and I must say, had a wonderful stay. We were able to check in early on Thursday around noon as we had arrived early from BWI via the MARC train. Union Station is right across the street which made arrival, as well as a quick coffee in the AM, quite convenient. Everyone we dealt with, from check in to check out was very friendly and very accommodating. We were given the Kerry Suite, which is 2 levels with a spiral staircase. The decor is traditional Irish, with floral brocade wallpaper and drapes. On the first level there was a queen sofabed, a desk, and a flat panel TV. The stairs led to the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. The bathroom was also on this floor. The suite is small even though spread out over 2 floors. Not too small, just not large. It was a perfect place to call home for 3 days while sightseeing in DC. The location could not be better with it's proximity to Union Station and the metro. We walked most everywhere, as it is also convenient to the Penn Quarter, Capitol Hill, and Chinatown. To get to the White House we did call downstairs for a cab as it was 6:30AM for a 7:30AM tour. When we got downstairs we were greeted by a charming man who drove us there in a beautiful Lincoln Town Car for the same price as a taxi. Apparently he has a lot of clients that stay at the Phoenix Park and was there at that right time to be able to offer us a luxury ride. It was a nice little perk to arrive at the White House in style. Overall we had a great time at the Phoenix Park and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable clean and slightly upscale hotel in a great location.

Make sure you request a room toward the front. My room was off the alley adjacent to two bars. I heard bins of bottles all night long. First the bars emptying their trash, the trucks to collect them. The rooms are small and feel a little unkempt. It's cheap but you get what you pay for.

If you want a nice, upscale hotel conveniently located within short walking distance of Union Station, Capitol Hill and downtown, and you like your hotel lobbies smelly, your staff rude and incredulous and your car keys to get lost, then this is definitely your place.

So, last week a friend of mine was in town on business and his company put him up at the PPH. I met him at the airport, he grabbed a rental car and we sped on over to the hotel. I must say, in addition to my remarks above regarding the location, the hotel does have a very convenient valet service and the entrance is on the N Cap ST side. Anyway, we gave the keys to the valet and walked in, and then *POW*, we got hit right in the kisser by an overpowering fish smell. Why, you ask? Well, that's because the hotel sits right on top of The Dubliner, a famous local irish pub that fries the holy hell out of some pollock. (The Dubliner also provides the room service for the hotel.) The fish smell was everywhere: in the lobby, in the elevator, in the 3rd floor hallways where my bud's room was, and in every fiber of my clothing after about 10 minutes. Gross.

But I digress. So, even though my buddy had the rental car, we never used it. We walked and metroed everywhere for the 2 days he was in town. On the morning he checked out, the concierge told him it would be 10 to 15 minutes before the valet could get his car. Seemed odd, but we didn't question it so we waited outside with his bags, enjoying the crisp DC January air. A few moments later, a valet came out and asked my friend if he was sure he had given him the right ticket because his car was not in the corresponding spot. Why and how could he give you the wrong ticket, guy? And why would anyone have more than one? The valet went to check for it again and came back and said he still couldn't find it. We gave him the description of the vehicle. No dice. Then the manager came out, rude as the diseased hell beast that spawned her, and said that the valet log showed that he took the car out the day prior, and that the keys were "misplaced!!" Yep, that scene from Ferris Bueller's Day Off popped right into my head, too. My friend told her that he most certainly did not check out the car, and that if there was even one mile too many on the odometer that he would sue the hotel ASAP. When he quipped that he couldn't believe that they lost the keys, she snapped back with "they're not lost, they're just misplaced." Really??

Well, it turned out that the guy who parked the car originally (he wasn't there the day my friend was leaving) accidentally put the car in the wrong spot. They called him at home and he had no idea where the keys were. My friend had another set of keys miraculously, so we did their job for them, went into the garage and checked each spot until we finally found the car. We drove it around to the front and threw the bags in. Just as we were making arrangements to have the hotel mail in the keys when they became "un-misplaced," to use a non-word that the manager probably uses, lo and behold, someone found the dang keys. This whole ordeal took over 45 minutes.

The only reason I gave this hotel a 2nd star is because it was built in that inimitable 1920's style gothic design both inside and out and resembles my favorite hotel in the world, the Ambassador East in Chicago on State and Goethe.

Folks, if you're coming into town and want a nice hotel in this same area, stay at the Hotel George, trust me. It's a very nice, contemporary hotel with a very friendly and helpful staff, and it's right around the corner from the PPH. Plus, it doesn't smell like the barnacles on the bottom of the HMS Bounty...

I recently stayed here for 2 nights.  The staff were professional aka they were there b/c they had to.  Short walk to the Capitol but far from everything else. I've never stayed in a "boutique" hotel before, so I can only compare it to the other city hotels I've stayed in.  Cute elevator, comfortable bed, the room was an ok-size for two.  Complimentary Wi-fi :)

Not a bad hotel located near the Capital and Union Station. If you have meetings in the area it is convenient, otherwise I would chose a hotel closer to Dupon Circle. The rooms are top notch and on par with a Marriot, but the gym was closed for renovation although their website did not reflect this.
