Phoebe's Cupcakes, you are evil geniuses and gracious hosts.

My friend and I were at a loss for places where we could sit around to work on grad school applications. I needed a place with free wi-fi that wouldn't kick us out, and my friend wanted cupcakes. Solution? Phoebe's cupcakes!

Situated right on Broadway and Roscoe, Phoebe's cupcakes is tres cute with its light blue painted walls, chandelier and dark wood finishes. Their tables and chairs are unusual, as each chair fits perfectly into a corner of the table. The chairs were kind of uncomfortable but I appreciate their design.

My friend and I split three cupcakes: salted caramel, breakfast and pumpkin. I think the pumpkin was a special but the salted caramel and breakfast cupcakes are regular offerings.

PUMPKIN: Great actual pumpkin taste, moist, loved the graham cracker texture and frosting with a hint of white chocolate. Out of the three, it was my least favorite (although that's not saying much because it was awesome).

BREAKFAST: Everything is better with bacon. Batter mixed with bacon bits? A perfect inch of crunchy bacon with a brown sugary looking glaze perched artfully on top of the frosting? Where'smymoneyI'mbuyingitnow. It was tres yummy, and I liked the contrast of crunchy bacon bits with the cake. This was second on my ranking.

SALTED CARAMEL: This cupcake satisfies my last meal requirements. It was sweet and savory. The cupcake had swirls of caramel and the frosting had a dash of sea salt. MMMMM. We have a winner!

I was happy that my friend and I could stay at Phoebe's for 4 hours and get refills on our coffee and tea. I love you Phoebe's! I'll be back for the Funfetti cupcake! (vanilla sprinkle cake topped with vanilla sugar cream)

I don't pretend to be a cupcake connoisseur, but I do a lot of baking at home, so I have a kind of 'home made' palate when it comes to baked goods.  I stopped in here late Saturday evening and picked up a tuxedo cupcake (white cake with fudge frosting.)  The next morning, despite traveling to dinner, two bars, and an afterhours with me, that cupcake was still going.  Fresh, moist cake, and delicious frosting.  I only wish I would've gotten more of them.  And reasonably priced at $2.50.  Shoutout to the guy behind the counter that was super friendly and helpful.  He certainly knows his cupcakes.

Good job, Phoebe, I'm saving another star for my re-review, I'm expecting more deliciousness.

Yum!  I stopped in on my way past Phoebe's yesterday thinking a cupcake or two would make a good dessert.  I got 6 Halloween themed cupcakes and they (the ones we've eaten so far) were each delicious!

My favorite was the carmel apple.  An apple cupcake with carmel frosting, and peanuts on top.  Complete with a fondant razor blade sticking out of it.

I'm not  a big fan of sweets but I'll definitely be taking the short walk to Pheobe's again.

Holy shit, these cupcakes are the SEXUAL CHOCOLATE! Phoebe did our wedding cupcakes, and start to finish they were fucking delicious.

First of all our tasting was rad--she gave us a huge tray of flavors, plus a list of about 900 factorial! different flavor combinations and had lots of pictures, fun ideas and was really cool in general.

We picked the breakfast cupcake (good god is this cupcake addicting and so spot on), the mexican hot chocolate (gave 99% of the women at our wedding earthshaking chocolate spicy orgasms), and funfetti (an awesome high-class take on the trailer-trash favorite), and everyone (I mean EVERYONE) was in awe of how good they were. We ran out. Not to MENTION the fact that she did a lovely job arranging them with flowers and tiers to go with our floral/color wedding theme.

And also--for all you cheap asses complaining about price: I went EVERYWHERE in the city, and for the price, she is balls to the wall the best. So fuck you, cheap bitches. Phoebe ROCKS.

Yummmyy! love this place. We discovered this by accident. My friends and I were walking along N. Broadway and just out of curiousity checked out the place. Since then we kept coming back to this place. Friendly staff, and very gay...loveeeee it, (maybe because it's in boystown).

I love the salted caramel and I love the idea that they also make doggie treats! I also tried red velvet, death by chocolate and these flavors were just perfect, not too sweet but not bland...just right.

This is by far the best cupcake I've ever had since I arrived in the US. No wonder Linday Lohan orders Phoebe's cupcakes.

YUM.. went in tonight, on a Friday night, and even though it was only an hour til close (10pm close time), the girl at the counter was cheerful.  Quiet & clean space, only two diners at one of the 4 or 5 tables.

The cupcakes were made of super moist cake- I liked the cake better than the frosting, but the frosting was pretty good, too.  The frosting didn't taste homemade, but it was still yummy.  The cake won me over, though.  Will definitely visit again, so close, I won't be able to avoid it!

Be still my cupcake loving heart. *yeah, I SO said it*

Oh yeah, whatevs...the "cupcake fad is overplayed, blah blah blah." Cupcakes are the perfectly sized answer to the "birthday cake," which for all intensive purposes are generally 1. too big and 2. hard to transport and 3. super expensive and 4. ONLY ONE FLAVOR! (blasphemy)

So, cupcakes = mini birthday cakes in millions of flavors. Phoebe's happens to make some peculiar ones, so let's dig in here, shall we?

That breakfast one with bacon and maple frosting: Yep, it works.
Apple cinnamon (decadent, for being so lightly flavored, rich through the middle)
Chocolate with chocolate frosting and chocolate sprinkles (my friends know me well).

They were gifts.
They were perfect.
Phoebe's wins, these convinced me to turn 27.

I have not yet been into Phoebe's, so I cannot comment on the staff or the environment.

I had the opportunity to sample a cupcake at a member appreciation party my gym threw.  I must say, I love free cupcakes.

I'm not sure though, that I would put in the effort to go to Phoebe's and cough up the $2.50 for a cupcake.  I think I had a very vanilla cupcake.. I don't know because nothing was labeled at the gym, and the person manning the table had no idea.  It was white cake with white frosting, and while the textures were good, it was totally lacking in any sort of flavor.  Kinda disappointing, but hey.. it was free!

Phoebe's Cupcakes is amazing!! I love the frosting. Its a nice whipped texture, not too heavy and sugary. I have a massive sweet tooth and just one cupcake will do for me! My favorite is the Death By Chocolate followed closely by the Salted Caramel... I'm a sucker for the salty/sweet combo.

So, I love it and  everyone needs to get cupcakes from here ASAP!! By the way, when they add an espresso machine, I'll be the first in line for a latte and a cupcake :)

I think this place is related to the now defunct Cupcakes on Briar Pl, as the decor is the same as is the girl working there. (I know, I'm a master sleuth.)

What's working really well at Phoebe's is the cupcake itself--moist, light, and fluffy, just how I like 'em. Unfortunately, the problem is just the same as what was wrong with Cupcakes--the frosting. It's very light, and I prefer a more sugary, creamy frosting like Sweet Mandy B's.

However, it is a huge bonus that they serve coffee and have seating. Coffee and cupcakes together are basically proof that God exists.

Phoebe's is really fantastic!  I recently did a mini-cupcake tour of Chicago, and Phoebe's was my favorite find.  The counter help is friendly and helpful, the room is inviting, and the tasty treats are superior.  I had the salted caramel and practically yelled out when I realized that the flaky yellow cake I expected was actually a decadent, delicious, somehow light and airy pound cake.  The whole butter-caramel-salt thing just sent me to another dimension.  I had no choice but to stare out the window for five minutes after I ate it.  Can't wait to visit Chicago again so I can try the Breakfast Cupcake.  Yay Phoebe's!

A cardinal crime: packaging cupcakes to-go in a container that's too big... and even worse if the container doesn't have slots for the cupcakes to sit in.  Because what happens?  You'll drive home, and the cupcakes inevitably topple.  The frosting schmears all over the container, and you're left with a box that looks like Rainbow Brite threw up all over it.

I was pleasantly surprised by the blackberry cupcake.  Berry delicious flavor in both the cake and frosting, but not overwhelmingly so.

As for the salted caramel, I was unpleasantly surprised with clumps of salt in the frosting, so salty that I cringed.  This one also lacked caramel flavor, and I vote "unbelievably salted vanilla bean" to be a better name for this cuppie.

$2.50 per cupcake.  Pheebs also sells individual servings of Haagen Daaz and B&J's, and there's a handful of tables and chairs so you can enjoy your sugar fix in store.

So I was coming home from my lovers apartment tonight and on my way to the train I ran into this little piece of heaven!

I walked in and, Chris?!, was so nice and cute :). I told him that I saw the reviews on Yelp and that since I was in the neighborhood I might as well try it now. We talked a bit about the cupcakes and he suggested that I try the breakfast one with the bacon. I was unsure at the thought but he seems self-assured, so I might take his word for it :).

I had the S'mores cupcake. DELICIOUS!!!

I sat down to enjoy my cupcake and shortly before I left 2 other people came in. While they were deciding and I was on my way out, Chris still made a point to say have a nice night. I think that's great because I left with a smile on my face :)

I will be back.

Phoebe's is AMAZING...not only do they have fabulous cupcakes, they have even more fabulous customer service. My now-fiancé worked with Phoebe to make a half dozen special cupcakes to look like Tiffany's ring boxes when he proposed to me! They were beautiful, delicious (dark chocolate w/buttercream frosting and a strawberry filling!) and definitely played a part in me saying "YES!"

I think these cupcakes are good, but they aren't the best. And since there are so many cupcake places that sell for the same price or less... It's not always worth going here.

1. The frosting is TOO light. I personally like cream cheese frosting the most, but to me... The frosting isn't that many steps above Jewel frosting. Yes, it's good, but not the best.

2. The actually cake is pretty tasty.

3. CHANGE THE FLAVORS MORE. Seriously. I live near here and in two months they've only had one or two new flavors.

4. Price. There should be some sort of deal for buying 6 or a dozen cupcakes. You aren't saving any money... And it's expensive!

So, basically... This place is good... And convenient from where I live... But there are better places to spend the money.

A darling little shop with moist (!!!) and flavorful cupcakes. Did I mention how much I loathe dry cupcakes? No problems here. Hooray! The Funfetti cupcake was playful and delicious - JN adored this one, he gets a vanilla Funfetti birthday cake every year. I only wish that they'd had more flavors available when I walked in there.

Charlie was quite happy that I brought him home a pupcake and a puppy donut. I love stores that cater to those with dog (babies). Thanks Phoebe!

So let me be fair and say that I am a fan of Sweet Mandy B's in Lincoln Park way over this place. Why?

Well, Sweet Mandy's cupcakes are $1.95 for regular ones and only $2.10 for fancy ones.  PHOEBE'S CHARGES $2.50 per cupcake!!!!!

What really gets me mad is they never have bags to put your box of cupcakes down in, so if you have other things to carry, you have to dedicate a hand to keeping a box of cupcakes steady.

I went in yesterday in the rain and had 4 other bags and they had no bags to put the cupcakes down in.  They said they were out of bags.  So, whatever.  I asked if I could use a garbage bag.  And guess what...they were out of garbage bags!!!!!  How sanitary and ridonkulous, right?

Lastly, the containers for the single cupcake are either a huge Chinese take out containter that's stupidly tall, or a long plastic one that lets the cake just flop all over the place.

The containers that hold 6 or 12 cupcakes are too shallow, so the top of the cupcakes get smushed down.  Yeah, that's really pretty.

I won't be going back here.  It's worth the trip over to Sweet Mandy B's.

So. Good.

I happened upon Pheobe's on a night where I was trying to eat on the healthy side.  Healthy lost, but my tastebuds certainly won.  Had a Funfetti and it was huge and delicious.  I can't wait to go bac and get a Salted Caramel.  I got a dog doughnut for my dog friend Pig, and it was huge.  I had to split in half, which is great for him because it means two treats.  He seemed to really dig his doughnut.

I checked out Phoebe's website and was almost overwhelmed by their flavor list.  I seem many trips there in my future.

There used to be this place in this neighborhood called Cupcake that had BOMBass cupcakes. Then they closed and I had to find an alternative. Shortly after, Phoebe's Cupcakes opened. It's a cute little shop, and the people who work there are pretty friendly. Well my turn to coordinate food for a staff meeting was coming up at work, and I thought I'd order dessert from here. So I went in and placed my order, and I literally asked the guy 5 times whether he was sure that the order would be ready at 8:15 the next morning. He assured me that it wasn't a problem....

So I get there the next morning at 8:15, and I'm told that my cupcakes are not ready because they're just opening up and they make their cupcakes fresh daily. Which is understandable, but then they shouldn't have told me multiple times that my order would be ready at that time. I ended up waiting like 15-20 minutes, so it wasn't the end of the world. It was just a little annoying because there was a reason I asked so many times. Oh well.

I've had the carrot cake one and the red velvet... They were both really good. They have about a pound of frosting on them, so this is not the type of dessert I'd eat every day (I'm just not that into sweets, but I do have my cravings every now and again).

Pretty good place overall, but I think I will forever be biased, due to my love for Cupcake.

I love this place. One of my best friends in high schools had a mother who was a professional baker, who made the most delicious and beautiful cakes I have ever seen... Phoebe's cupcakes are better. And it pains me to say that. They're moist and sweet and the frosting's to die for and you have to go eat one right now. The calories are totally worth it!

Delicious!

I think by this point in the cupcake craze, I've tried every noteworthy variation in Chicago, and this one takes the cake (pun intended).

I tried the salted caramel, the blackberry, the death by chocolate and the red velvet, and all were extremely moist with frosting that was the perfect balance of butter and sugar (aka didn't make my teeth hurt).

Interesting (but not ridiculous) flavors, perfect cake-to-frosting ratio, average price point...Molly's is my new go-to place for cuppies.

Well... This place disappointed me a bit, since the website and logo look quite similar to the late cupcake shop named simply Cupcakes located nearby til it closed, so I had hoped the cupcakes would be just as good. We only tried two, so I'll have to be back to try a few more flavors.

Peach: Peach cake, frosting, and some sort of custard filling. The filling was great (I'll eat almost anything with custard) but the cake felt a bit underdone, and neither that or the frosting had a peach taste. If it weren't for the color (and them telling us so) I wouldn't have known it was a peach cupcake.

Salted Caramel: Also a disappointment. There wasn't too much of a salty taste, nor was there very much caramel inside. I did like the cake itself, but I'd like to try it with a better frosting.

The service was great, and the guy at the counter  was really nice, and couldn't believe it was our third cupcake place that day. I'll be back soon to try a few more cupcakes and re-evaluate the quality!

Om nom nom nom.  That's all I have to say about that.

This place is adorable and they have a delicious selection of cupcakes.  My favorite is the red velvet.  My friend even tried their bacon cupcake and said it was good.

I sort of wish they were open a bit later, as it would be a nice place to grab dessert after a late dinner.

I'm looking forward to an office birthday party, so I have an excuse to come back and buy bunch of cupcakes!

When I go out to dinner, I always get dessert. Always.
I went to dinner at Wakamano down the street and their dessert menu is srsly lacking, so my dinner date and I wandered in here to soothe the call of the sweet tooth. Teeth. Damn it, we wanted sugar!
He had the last red velvet (bastard) and I got the very vanilla. We stopped in late on a Wednesday so the selection wasn't the ush, but Judas Priest were these cupcakes good!
I'd like to come back some morning and try  the breakfast cupcake. Bacon makes everything better. Everything.

The cupcake quest continues! After discovering that Treats on Broadway had closed (to my horror- I don't care what people say I love Treats, but also love rich amazing desserts like Phoebe's!) I stumbled upon Phoebe's.

Such a cute little cupcake place, but I felt like I was cheating on Molly's (my fave) by going in! I figured I'd just pop in, but upon seeing a salted caramel cupcake I was IN hook line and sinker! My hub got the death by chocolate and would only allow me a "really tiny" bite to taste the frosting. WOAH. Pretty amazing stuff.

But back to my salted caramel- the cake part was almost like pound cake/angel food cake mixed. It was airy but dense and, sorry but have to use this word, moist. So good. The buttercream caramel frosting with the little bits of salt was perfect and then as I devoured it i found a gooey caramely surprise in the center! YUM. Though I won't say it tops Molly's because, come on it doesn't have swings, nor were these served at my wedding so Molly's will always be special :), it was pretty damn delicous.

I just sampled 2 of phoebe's cupcakes and they were delicious.  the salted caramel (apparently their signature) was sweet and salty, with dense cake and creamy buttery frosting.  the vanilla funfetti cupcake was similarly tasty, if a total sugar overload.  other selections looked extremely promising, including chocolate with pumpkin frosting.  some sort of cupcake photo shoot was taking place while I was there, and there were some delicious and beautiful looking novelty decorated cupcakes.

Still a solid 3 stars here!

I don't need a whole birthday cake so we settled on getting a cupcake each.  I had my all time favorite red velvet while my partner had the funfetti.  I love that they've incorporated funfetti into cupcake form.

But I'm thinking that this butter cream may not be for me.  The mound of icing on my red velvet was bigger than the cake itself.  The cake was dry and crumbly while the frosting I thought was suppose to be cream cheese flavored like most, didn't taste like anything but overly sweet frosting.

Funfetti was good on the cake, but that topping of icing made my teeth hurt it was so sweet!  But so cute and colorful!

Guy behind the counter still not overly nice.  Kind of uncomfortable feeling.  The place seems so light and cheerful, I guess I expect the workers to be too.

Still a great price for a cupcake, but alas, not for me personally.  SO happy to see so many others in the neighborhood love it though!

I live in Phoebe's neighborhood and just noticed it not long ago.  Since my neighbor Cupcakes recently closed, I was glad I wouldn't have to go far to get a fix if I needed one.  I stopped by on a Monday and they were closed.  According to Yelp, it looks like they are now open on Mondays...good to know.  Before I even tried one of their cupcakes I was already mad at Phoebe's.  Well, more annoyed. They put a promotional flyer on my car and after it rained all night it adhered to the windshield.  I didn't have a blade handy to scrape it off, so I had to drive around with this white paper stuck to the driver's side of my windshield until I could get to the car wash.

Anyway, not long after the great sticker incident, my husband and I had a small Mexican themed party.  Everyone brought over a Mexican themed dish.  One friend brought over Phoebe's cupcakes because when you think of Mexico you think of cupcakes=)  I was happy to finally try them.  She brought 6 over, but not much of a variety.  I tried some caramel-y one that was really good.  The chocolate with chocolate frosting was good, not great.  The frosting tasted kind of bitter to me and I prefer white cake over chocolate cake.  Even the next day, the cake kept its moistness.  I still need to actually go to the store to get the full experience and check out the other flavors.  Hey, it's Monday and they're open! Maybe I'll walk over today after I park my car in my garage...

Not bad.  Not my favorite, but not bad.
A little less sweeter and moist than Molly's.  (But sometimes Molly's is too sweet so that was actually cool.)  But a bit on the dry side- maybe Saturday nights are not the best time to try them.

Notable mention was the salted caramel- FREAKING YUMMY.

Chocolate frosting also was delightful.

I have recently been tasting cupcakes around Chicago, and can unequivocally recommend Phoebe's as having the best cupcakes in town. Not only do they have the lightest cake I have tasted in Chicago, but their frosting is perfect--not too sweet, super-smooth, and perfectly matched to the cake underneath (that goes for both the sugar and buttercream frosting). I was a particularly big fan of the salted caramel, the funfetti (vanilla sprinkle cake with vanilla sprinkle frosting), and the tuxedo (vanilla with chocolate frosting). They also make a mean Red Velvet.

This is a must-try for cupcake fans!

eh, two and a half stars. I was so excited for this place to open as it's right by my work. However, I'm pretty happy I'm not in love with it, or I'd be a good ten pounds wider.

First few times, i tried a different flavor each time. I really didn't enjoy any of them. Sad, huh? Cake was dry, flavors not fresh.
However, once I discovered the salted caramel, which seems to be popular, I don't order anything else. It's great, and it's the only one that's great. (so far...)
I like the real butter frosting, but the amount is truly ridiculous. I scrape off like, 75% of the frosting before eating because 1) I don't need the additional 400 or so calories and 2) Gross, that's a lot of frosting

But the caramel center and the moist cake are sooo tasty.

I also like the cake here.  I think the icing is very slippery, but it tastes like that is because its true BUTTER frosting, through and through.  Butter melts readily on a hot Chicago summer day...but if you like  your frosting to stay put more, you may be consenting to LARD or SHORTENING products.  I'll take my chances with a landslide of yum salted caramel frosting at Pheobes...oh, but dont expect a lot of filling, as you wont find it.  I am okay with that bc the cake is good and the buttercream frosting matches it.

The red velvet cupcake is still on the counter...yum...more on that later...

My diet starts Monday. No joke. I've been on a dessert splurge lately. Maybe it's due to stress...or maybe it's due to lack of self-control when it comes to the sweet stuff. It's a small place, but it has tables and chairs for customers to relax and enjoy a cupcake or two. One cupcake is $2.50, which is more/less than other cupcake places.

I was killing time in the area when I realized how close I was to this place. I read up on Yelp about this week's flavors, one being the mint chocolate meltaway. Thank goodness they still had some left. Now, I'm a mint chocolate chip ice cream kind of gal, so I was excited to try this. Holy crap. It smelled just as heavenly as it tasted. I know this sounds funny, but it's true! Chocolate cupcake, topped with mint flavor frosting and chocolate chips sprinkled all around. Yum. Definitely a keeper next time it's offered.

Wait, I'm not done. I didn't leave with just one cupcake but two. The Breakfast cupcake caught my eye. I couldn't resist shelling out another $2.50 for this one. While the mint one was filling enough by itself, I decided to keep the Breakfast one for, well, breakfast? Basically, it's a buttermilk cake doused in maple syrup with maple cream frosting and bacon on top. Though really sweet, I thought it was pretty good. You can definitely taste the maple syrup. It kind of reminded me of the movie "Elf": "we elves try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and maple syrup." (Or something like that) I definitely recommend drinking lots of water (milk) with this one. Once the sugar shakes stop, I'll come back for more or perhaps try one of the other flavors.

Just a quick update:
First thing I noticed--Phoebe's personal follow up was pretty impressive. She's clearly listening to what folks say and making changes that need to be made.
But more than that...the cupcakes themselves. Someone brought a whole fricking box of them to a meeting the other day...flavors of every colour, every variety...red velvet, vanilla, some psychedelic pink thing, and...bacon. Phoebe has a bacon cupcake. There's really nothing more that needs to be said.  Crack in the form of a cupcake.

First of all, I am VERY impressed with Phoebe's diligent follow-up to all of the posts. That's awesome. She's made many of the suggestions made here. Way to be engaged with your constituents!

Secondly, I've been back. A few times. What?! It's right around the corner from me...I've had a few more flavors and am officially in love with the Key Lime Pie. OMG. SO good. Definitely better than Molly's Key Lime version.

And just like always, that buttercream is ahhhhmazing. I need to figure out the secret! It's to die for. I'll be back soon. I seriously need to move out of walking distance from any cupcake-related emporiums...

Phoebe's metamorphoses should be a case study in one of those guides to small business. A clip art cupcake would grace the page and a handy bulleted list of what to do would be the sidebar- Phoebe's has gotten it right. And really in retrospect this cupcake joint's initial lack of polish is charming. Do we really need another Starbuckesque establishment in which every component has been put through a focus group? I know I don't need another mug to match the soundtrack and the dark roast I took home.

Phoebe's is doing great. Thanks for offering a free cup of Ben and Jerry's with every cupcake today. Good marketing, if not good for my -as my husband calls it- pop-out butt. And since the cupcakes have improved, tasted that salt on the salted carmel! (yum), I am afraid I will be back and get more "back."

Tried the chocolate chip cookie dough - went after the Pride parade winded down and got helped by a total sweetheart.

Don't know if you swing my way, but honey, if you bring the cupcakes, it won't matter.

Won't matter at all. :D

Not my favorite.

Very cute shop, love the staff, ambiance and colors.

Here are my three major issues:
1) The frosting is very oily. Maybe it was a bad batch, but we bought four cupcakes and the frosting just seemed thin and oily. The flavors are there, but the texture is off.
2) They come in Chinese food containers. Cute - in theory. But the cupcakes are too small for the containers and shift around a lot in transit (we were walking) and by the time we got them home the frosting was all over the container and not much on the cake.
3) The size is kind of blah. When I pay for a cupcake at a boutique bakery... there better be some novelty to it. That's the whole point, right? HUGE or many tiny ones. Or at least have a mountain of frosting on it. There is nothing special to the appearance of these. They look like something you could make at home.

Sure, these may be technicalities, but if I am going to treat myself... I want to enjoy it. Make the trek to Sugar Bliss instead.

P.S. To be fair - maybe they have changed things since we went here when it first opened. There appears, from the Yelp photos, to be more frosting now and it looks a little thicker.
