Chicken soup is old news. The real cure to a persistent cold is an extra large bowl of vegetarian soup loaded with rice noodles and served with traditional sides. Certainly, a piping hot bowl of broth with chunks of broccoli, cabbage, and carrots flavored with hot peppers, fresh basil, and whole garlic cloves sounds more tasty than a bowl of canned sodium. At under $10 for the bowl and a pitcher of jasmine tea, each of the five stars is more than justified.
Pho Tau Bay is worth the drive to the west bank and a must-stop if you are sick and in the area because of some crappy urgent care. PTB is speedy, delicious, and cheap--satisfying all requirements for distinction as a 'food not frills' restaurant.
I visited Pho Tau Bay with my boyfriend after reading the prior reviews.
I ordered the Jasmine tea and it was delicious. We had the tofu spring rolls and they were delish! Perfect amount of cilantro in them! And the peanut sauce for dipping, yum!
For the main course I had the VG6, pan fried rice noodles, tofu, and veggies. It was the perfect meal, and I was so excited to find pineapple amongst the veggies!
The boyfriend and Sticky rice with chicken and sausage, this was also very good.
For dessert we had the taro pudding, I was a little nervous because of the green colour but it was sweet and had a good texture, i would definitely order it again.
We plan on eating here many more time and have already been back. It looks small and dingy from the outside but is a pleasant surprise once you get inside. If you haven't been here you absolutely must give it a try!
I dropped by this morning and had some difficulty finding the correct plaza with my GPS (technology fail), but made it just before traditional lunchtime because my friend and I were super starving. It's a little ways tucked in and, appropriately (if you're into stereotypes?), across the street from a huge nail supply store. Is this called irony?
The interior smells like Vietnamese restaurant! That mix of MSG and cleaning supplies... oh, how I had missed that smell. There were only two other people seated until we got there, so we picked out our own spot close to the counter and immediately selected from the menu.
I order Pho Gau (beef brisket) and my friend got Pho Tai Gau, I think (rare steak and brisket). The Pho broth was good; certainly not the best I've ever had, but definitely a strong beef stock and not too watery. My brisket was fatty and tender. Delicious. The pho came with the usual basil, bean sprouts, jalapenos and lime. Sadly, no extra sawtooth veggies, and we had to ask for cilantro, which was quickly brought. I had a regular bowl and it was large enough to keep me full for several hours.
I also got an order of Cha Gio, eggrolls, but sadly they were with eggroll wrapper and not the rice paper spring roll wrapper that makes them bubbly. The filling was great. The menu said it was crab as well as pork, and I could definitely taste a variety of flavors that you don't normally get in an eggroll. It barely came with one piece of lettuce for all 4, however, and no basil or mint at all for wrapping.
I think the server kinda laughed at my poor attempts at Vietnamese and perhaps even appreciated it? I was certainly apologetic with how I butchered the pronunciation, haha. The service was quick, even though it was also the servers mealtime (since at least a tablefull were on break and eating their lunch next to us). Customers started coming in and it was getting pretty full, however it was soooo quiet inside; when paying our bill, the host even said how it was going to get all silent when the two of us left.
We didn't order drinks, and still the meal came out to about $20. I suppose that's standard out here, but it's a little expensive to me to be paying over $7 for one bowl of pho! The quality is worth it, however, and I foresee myself making trips to the West Bank just to dine on some great food that reminds me of my boyfriend and home.
Best beef stew with french bread that I've ever had IN... MY... LIFE.....
The food is great and the staff is really friendly. The prices are super reasonable, too. I get the medium rare beef pho with extra meat and a large limeade. The lemon grass beef spring rolls are tasty, as is the charbroiled beef bon mi. I do venture out of these faithful menu items, and have never been disappointed.
I'm a little embarassed that I've neglected to review Pho Tau Bay after all these years of going. A friend and I plan after work "field trips" to the Westbank just to come here. As sad as I am that both east bank locations closed (Metairie & Mid-City) the drive is worth it!
The biggest thing the "Pho" has going for it is consistency. I can't say I've ever had a bad meal here. I also love the amount of options that veg*ans have here.
My favorite entree is the VG6- perfectly pan fried noodles with pineapple and deep fried tofu. The spring rolls are delicious, always served with a generous helping of dipping sauce.
Unfortunately I can't vouch for any of the desserts since I rarely have room for an after dinner mint once I've left this place.
Well worth a drive across the river. Almost everything is home-made, including the mayonaise. The Vietnamese-style po-boys are on small, thick, freshly baked rolls, but can come a bit overloaded with herbs, which takes away from the flavor of the mayonaise and shrimp. Otherwise, everything is delicious. There's a reason it's a popular spot. We went at three o'clock on a Wednesday and weren't alone in our patronage or our enjoyment.
Tonight, we were those people.
As a career server (my liberal arts degree ensures such), I would have seen me coming a mile away.
I waited, in the restuarant for my fellow patrons to arrive. I ordered dinner for four by myself, before the kitchen closed. We were definitely the last people out of there, and I felt like such a hack!
Here's the thing about pho tau bay that blew me out of the water- usually, when you're those people, you can feel the energy of the frenzied staff (I mean, unless you're completely oblivious, which some people are) trying to get you out the door, so they can go home.
But our service was amazing and our server(s) were super nice and accommodating. A lot of times, I go to authentic-y houses of pho, and get the impression that i'm burdening the staff by patroning them (during normal business hours). I chalk it up to "part of the experience," but at Pho Tau Bay, she was so willing to deal with me having to order for my group of friends running late.
I could have done with a little more "garnishes"- 1 basket for 4- which one person at the table used entirely before realizing it wasn't just hers. But I'm wlling to give them the benefit of the doubt- it was probably based on our bad dinner's etiquette of showing up less than 30 minutes to close.
Pho Tau Bay wins hands down for vegetarian vietnamese options in this city in number- they even had full on vegetarian soup, like, with vegetable broth. The vegetarian spring rolls were good, though the tofu in them tasted a little well-done.
It was also SUPER CHEAP. less than $7 for a big bowl of pho, i think my whole meal (Iced coffee w/ condensed milk, pho tai, and half an order of spring rolls [4 rolls to an order] ) came to a little more than $12.
I'll definitley be back. the pho wasn't as overly-buttery as tan dihn. And I can't wait to explore the vegetarian options with my soyola friends!!
Pho Tau Bay is "pho" real the best vietnamese restaurant in the city. It is amazing how fast, cheap, and good the food is. Get a vietnamese coffee, just make sure you stir before pouring it over ice. All of the soups are great and the portions are huge. I always have leftovers.
Totally worth the drive to the West Bank.

Yeah...it's that good.
This fantastic Vietnamese restaurant has been around for over 25 years. When you eat here, you will know why. The pho is excellent. One of my favorite dishes though, is Bun Tom Nuong - shrimp (always perfectly grilled) over rice noodles, lettuce and cucumbers. Pour the noc cham sauce over it and Yum! A perfect dish for a hot Nola day.
