This is a standby for me. The pho is rich and soothing. And the pork with vermicelli (#34) is brilliant. There's a nice bit of char on the pork and the sauce brings it all together.

Awesome.

I was Pho(King) Hung(Over) when I strolled into this joint (sorry, but it's true..it was seriously one of the worst hangovers of my post-legal-drinking age life).  Mom wasn't there to make soup, and I didn't even have any canned goods in the casa.  I decided to call in some beef pho at this place given the good word-of-mouth.  I've only had pho once before, I thought it was good but it didn't floor me.

The Pho here is fan-phoking-tastic(sorry again)!  The amount of food was HUGE.  For 8 bucks I got a mammoth bowl of broth with varied accoutrements I could add at will (I got takeout, the takeout design was expert, everything was perfectly wrapped to allow total customization).   I really don't even know what half the stuff *is*, but it's delicious and I ate it all like a thief.

I will definitely be back; I just wish this place was close enough to walk to.  It's a wee bit far for me.  I'll have to give closer places a chance now, but I feel I may be spoiled for life.

I think I have a love and hate relationship with this place. There have been times when I swore to myself that I would never come back, but I always have. Its like a bad drug that you want to get off of but can't. I've been coming here since I was 8 years old (a long long time ago). So I do have a history with this place. The food is extremely good. I always order the pho beef oxtail soup (#9) on the menu. Sometimes I deviate and order the (#32). They're both good and the only two foods I have tried through my many years of coming here. I guess I'm not very adventurous.

The #9 is amazing. It is a classic that everyone should have when they go to this place. The price is cheap and the food can be made quickly. Once you have this soup you always crave it. I moved to NYC for college and the pho restaurants here can't match this place and neither can the ones in portland.

My main problem with this place is the service and the sanitary (lack of) conditions. On two occasions, the servers have forgotten my food and I ended up waiting as the rest of my family finished their food. It really does make you made and the people obviously forgot, but they didn't even say sorry or comp my food. That would be something a decent restaurant would do. Also, I found a piece of long hair in my noodles. It was so gross, because it was long and thin and dyed brown. I felt like throwing up and leaving. When I told the servers, they were like "oh, okay, we'll get you another one?". Their lack of apologetic behavior coupled with my disgust made me swore never to come to this place again. They didn't comp my meal this time either. Plus, on numerous occasions, I have gone home with a terrible stomach ache.

Pros: great food, cheap price
Cons: terrible service, bad sanitation

I know there are a lot of people who love this place as much as they love their mom's kitchen table. To those people, I'm sorry. I just didn't care for this place. I went to get vegetarian pho which is something that has become a standard on the Pho menu in Seattle so I naturally thought Portland would be the same. (I'm from Portland but live in Seattle) But I was wrong. I did order the number 47 from the veggie menu but it was so bland and tasteless I was immediately grumpy about it. That grumpiness turned into gastric upset fairly quickly. My stomach told me that wasn't completely veggie as promised by both the menu and the server.

2nd best Pho in Oregon. But what's up with the service? They are so inconsistant. But anyway Jimmy/Victor or his new name this year puts out a heck of a product. Number 12, salad rolls and iced coffee. Delish!

I was missing home and feeling a little blue, when I passed by this place.  Grateful to find a touch of home in my new pdx hood, I ventured in to test out the pho ga.  I can't say that I was disappointed -

Though the prices were steeper than what I'm used to for pho, it's still a complete steal at around $7 for a large bowl of pure soul mending noodle soup.  Plus, my meal came with complimentary hot tea.  This is definitely the type of  service I could get used to.

The restaurant itself is surprisingly clean and modern, given the rather plain exterior.  It was just cozy enough to feel comfortable lingering a bit and finishing up a chapter of my book, which is a stark contrast to the cafeteria pho restaurants I typically stake out.  Needless to say, I foresee this becoming a regular haunt for quick weekday meals and and also any other time I need a little noodle soup soul soothing.

I can tell the difference between good pho and bad pho, and Pho Hung would result in a 2.5 star rating. Unfortunately, the rating system doesn't allow for half stars, so I was forced to round down (instead of up) for precautionary factors. First, the exterior of Pho Hung isn't too attractive. I was expecting your typical looking mom/pop pho store. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the nicely decorated interior. I'll give them props for that. That can compensate for the slightly below mediocre pho. Not.

The broth was average, the noodles decent. However, the meat was horrid! The difference between a good and bad pho place is definitely the broth, meat quality, and the side dish of bean sprouts etc. Everything was fine except for the meat quality. First, they cut the meat slices too thick for appeal. Usually, meat is thinly sliced and topped above the pho. I ordered the "Pho Tai Gau", and yet another downer, the gau tasted bland, old, and stale.

This place is too expensive compared to the quality of the Pho. I actually prefer Pho Ngon (slightly cheaper yet tastes much better) just down the street (located in Fubon Plaza).

Disgusting place. Cockroach crawling on the floor by my table where water was dripping from the ceiling onto the floor, When I left there was a cockroach crawling on the counter by the cash register. If that's the case in the dining room what do you think back in the kitchen must be like. GROSS.

I go to the SE Pho Hung when i'm in the East side.  i think it's has old school charming though some might think it out of style and a bit 'old.'  the service there is speedy fast like all PH locations (my fave is Beaverton).

want to try Pho but no one to go with?  PH is great for beginners and if you can't grab someone to go with you, it's cool.  They have a great atmostphere for single diners.  If you like your coffee sweet, try their Viet. Coffee-- either on ice or hot.  So yummy!

This place is absolutely spectacularly delicious!  I've been going to all three locations (well 2 now) for some 20 odd years.  Being Vietnamese, I grew up with Pho, bun thit noung, and com thit noung.  Nothing beats this place, as authentic as you can get when it comes to Vietnamese food, other than having my 80 year old grandma whipping up pho in her own kitchen.

And the prices are so so so down to earth and manageable, I love this place.

I've been coming back to Pho Hung time after time, year after year, and this is still the best beef pho I've ever had. The rest of the food at Pho Hung is marginal at best. Even the chicken pho, not so awesome. And vegetarians beware, Pho Hung is NOT for you.

The restaurant? Still filthy after all these years, but that's no matter. When you're serving up soup this bomb, I could be seated inside a dumpster for all I care.

They really, really need to start serving beer here, though. Seriously.

I ordered another bowl of bun thit nuong cha gio (vermicelli with grilled pork and egg rolls) with some iced coffee. The service was friendly (the old guy who took my order even complimented me on my arm tattoo, haha).  The coffee was strong as expected--I'm not a coffee drinker really, I just didn't want to order my usual soda xi muoi (salty plum soda) though in retrospect, I should've because I'm not a coffee person!

The food was good, but the pork could stand to be better seasoned. It looked kinda bored and dull without those lovely grill marks but overall the dish was yummy. I actually enjoyed it better at Pho Van. The egg rolls were pretty good too...nice flaky crunchy deep fried skin. Mmmm...

Ok, so I admit I have never tried pho before this, but so what?

It...was....awesome....There's no other way of putting it. I was in search of something hot and edible (that's what she said) because I am getting over a rather nasty cold. I went there on reference, and as always, I didn't expect much (I find this strategy to be most effective, unless you really get off on disappointment).

I ordered the small #9, or the beef brisket pho that was listed under the caption "for beginners". In addition, I ordered a Vietnamese drip espresso with condensed milk (something else I've never tried). Upon the arrival of said dish, I knew I was in for a treat; the brisket inside the bowl was thinly cut, and was cooked perfectly; the broth was light brown and opaque, but not enough that I couldn't see the heavenly rice noodles waiting for me at the bottom. To this broth, I added tomato chili sauce and hot oil with peppers, combined with jalepenos and a dash of plum sauce.

The meat was excellent, and broth was even better; with a myriad of sensual flavors that made me forget about sinus pressure and scratchy throats; but the real topper for me was the coffee; it was served with a drip into another cup that contained the condensed milk. When it was done dripping I added it to a glass of ice, took a sip, and very nearly had a "Meg Ryan Moment" for all to see. So strong, so sweet, so perfect was this coffee, that I am now addicted to this caffeinated ambrosia for life! I will have it again, I WILL. OK, ok, let's wrap this up: GO TO THIS RESTAURANT, order whatever the hell yo want, but get the damn coffee I recommended, or forever hold your peace.

As I show more and more symptoms of this swine flu, I crave the comfort of soup.  I should have ordered the chicken pho to keep with grandma's cure for the common cold, but when I think pho, I think beef.

I find it funny that the difference between a small and large order is 50 cents.  Is it just more broth?  They have a helpful "for beginners" section on the menu, which allowed my tripe-fearing dinner companion feel more comfortable about his order.  I, on the other hand, thought the tripe was more tender than most other places.  I would love it if pho came with more tender beef, but maybe that's just how it is everywhere.

I enjoyed my meal a lot and it cleared out my sinuses after adding a bunch of the provided condiments.  I feel better already and this comfort only cost me $7.50.

I love a good pho, and this place certainly has the goods.  We have sampled some of the other menu items, and while tasty they can veer towards the overly greasy.  But give me a steaming bowl of pho followed by a cafe sua da and I am a happy girl.  The staff is sweet and service is super fast.

The real highlight of the meal came at the end. Neither JB nor I could finish our large bowls. He had gotten the liquid level down to about halfway through. I had barely passed the invisible three-quarters line. We asked for takeout containers. We began our standard two-person job to get the food from plate to carton, and the server rushed to our table.

"No no."

Then he gave us each a Look. Not the Hey, Sexy Thing look. Not the You Just Signed Your Death Warrant look. This look meant Watch and Learn.

Step One: Push all the noodles, meat pieces, and veggies into the container first. So logical, yet so the opposite of how I've packed up my food. That explains why my clothes never stay clean more than a few hours.

Step Two: Hold the chopstick in place. Think of it as the dam that holds the river in check. Hold it there for a minute even though it will seem like a commercial break could pass during the time. For the love of Jebus, DON'T INTERRUPT.

Step Three: Pour the remaining soup into the takeout bowl.

Step Four (for the diner): Pick your jaw off the table.

Pho tastes best with the right, nuanced touches of finesse. A little sweet chili sauce here and there, the cilantro softened in the broth. They won't save bad pho, but they elevate good pho from semi-catchy pop ditty to Number One Hit Single (which also has its own Look, but it's best practiced in the mirror and alone). But the instructional trick at the end made the single an Anthem.

So when you find an amazing place, then you move and you crave that same food, it's incredibly difficult to another place that will keep to the impossible standard you have set for a new place.

Pho Hung, did not mess around, I of course couldn't decide what to get, because we'll I can't read Vietnamese or decipher what the food actually is. So when our waiter came back after seating us, I asked what's the most popular Pho dish and he pointed me to the beef Pho. Yes, I'll have that!

It was brought, just like my old place in LA, big bowl of brothy, noodly goodness. I whoreishly applied my sriracha sauce, and my bean sprouts and a couple of jalapenos for good measure and dug right in. I'm going to be ok, if I need Pho, I know where to go. I'll see though, if they have charbroiled pork next time, but the beef is no laughing matter.

My friend had this seafood dish, and she said it was spectacular, I was too busy trying to devour my bowl of soup to ask for a taste. That's good right?!

TIP: After you are done, go up to the counter to pay!! We sat for way too long, should've realized it was like our old place. Which I never did figure out there too.

I'm a Pho Van regular. It's where I learned to love Pho, so I admit that I came into Pho Hung with a... tainted perspective. It would not surprise me if Pho Hung is more authentic and has a more diverse menu. For me, a lover of simple lean beef pho, it was pretty good.

The staff was very friendly. I felt like Pho Hung was a tad pricier than Pho Van (though I'm not 100% sure) with a lesser atmosphere. I may go back and try something other than pho, but for noodle soup, I'll probably stick with... well, you know.

Maybe I'm a bit biased because I've been going here since I was around six years old, but this is some of the best pho you can get.

Despite what a few people might claim, Pho Oregon is not better. Pho Hung is the superior bowl of soup.

The only thing that sucks is that I don't live in Portland anymore to eat it.

I'm sorry but yeah, this place pretty much sucks.

I know Pho is big in Portland, and I'm a regular in Chinatown in Boston for Pho, so I wanted to see how it compared. I really hope Pho Hung isn't an accurate representation of Pho in Portland if general, because if so, I feel bad for you guys.

First of all, compared to what I'm used to, the menu is tiny. Everything is centered around beef... what about chicken, fish, tofu, and veggies? I had to specifically ask for a vegetarian Pho (hello, I thought we were in the veggie capital of the US?!?) and my "vegetarian pho" was vermicelli noodles (I specifically asked for yellow noodles), with onions and broccoli. No other vegetables. I'm used to veggie Pho with a huge variety of veggies. And THEN, they charged me an extra $2 for my "veggie Pho"! I paid a grand total of $9.50 for crappy noodles, broccoli, and onions.

Service was fine.

This was honestly the worst and most expensive Pho of my life! I can't believe I schlepped all the way out here for such a disappointment.

Other recommendations greatly appreciated!

The spicy scent inside the doorway
Tells me that I'm not in Norway*:
The sweet perfume of beef and basil
Fills the passages (those nasal),
So it's Vietnam I'm sipping,
Spooning, slurping, madly dipping!

And the staff here? Always friendly!
So what if the decor's not trendy?
It's the taste of Pho that matters,
And you leave here feeling fatter
Very quickly since the food arrives
In minutes, mostly less than five

Along with pots of tea for free,
Or milky icy thai coffee.
I often order "large 11",
For that broth that's close to heaven,
But 37's great as well,
Crisp pork with veggies, "mmm, that's swell!"

There's nothing beats Pho Hung for lunch,
For that I'm grateful -- Thanks a bunch!

[*Really, don't you always expect Norway when you first walk into a restaurant???]

The place:
I'll be the first to admit I'm no Portland native, and I was using my crackberry + google maps to find the place, but it seemed pretty hidden.  Pretty nondescript place, looks like it used to be some kind of fast-food place.  Decor is unremarkable, but you're not here for a great atmosphere, you're here for soup ...

The food:
Ordered #7 small beef noodle soup bowl and salad rolls.  The salad rolls came out WAY too fast ... knew they were already prepared, which doesn't bode well for the "freshness" factor that I usually attribute to Vietnamese restaurants.  That being said, they were pretty tasty, then again there are times that the salad roll is just a vector to stuff my face with hoisin sauce and crumbled peanuts spiked with some of the chili-garlic-red-rooster sauce (spoon one, not squeeze one).  The soup came out piping hot and chock full of meat, noodles, and veggies.  The flavors were good, not great.  Overall good food on a cold, rainy day.

The bottom line:
Good food for the money.  My only knock is that I expect to get a fresh salad roll since it's pretty basic to put together.  I credit Portland's Yelpers with helping me to try the place, and I'm happy to say it was good enough for me to enjoy.  I'm no connoisseur of Vietnamese soups, so take the review with a grain of salt.

It only took me about 2 days in Portland to realize that Pho is kind of a big deal here.

But how do you pick your pho when there are so many pho'n places to get it from? Simply, I say...I yelped it. Lucky for me, the place ya'll recommend as 'the best' is a hop, skip and a jump away from the maxi pad.

I got Pho to-go today...A big oxymoronic bowl of chicken broth and fried (but not to a crisp- and that's a good thing) tofu, basil, lime, crunchy sprouts, jalapenos and sriracha- I think my eyes enjoyed it as much as my tummy. I love BEAUTIFUL food. And it was without question, delicious.

I also got the iced coffee with condensed milk- it was good (not great) and strong, but the togo cup was loaded with ice, so for $3 not so sure I'll do that again. Especially when the Pho is only 6 bucks and you get like a gallon of it, and the coffee you only get like a shot. I'm not sure the dollar to liquid ratio is lining up there. Although coffee is more expensive than gasoline if you're talking dollar to liquid, so if you put it that way....this pho seems like it should cost a lot more!

The service was excellent, they helped me decide what flavor broth to get, and told me what the vegetable options were. They gave me the coffee while I waited, which was all of 5 minutes.

If someone can tell me where to get BETTER pho in town, then I'd be up for the challenge...pho sho!

Yup, Pho Hung is Pho'kn Phonominal.    (did she just say that? yikes!)

Mere seconds after I ordered my fresh wraps (sans unidentified pork-bits, sorry loyalists,) they magically arrived in front of me. In fact, had I not requested a special order, I may have condescendingly presumed that they were pre-made and just siting in a cooler in back. But nope -- no unidentifiable (nor identifiable, for that matter) pork bits to be found. Just fresh veggies, basil, and shrimp.

My company probably thought I was very put off by their conversation due to my pained facial expressions, but considering that I nearly burnt my face off with a novice dip in the 'ol spice jar of death by fire, they were exceptionally forgiving.

According to Butterfly Law, where for in you should not bypass Pho Hung.  (section 7.2.1)

I'm trying to "expand my food horizons" b/c the BF says I eat like a ten year old, so we came here and I gave it a try!

I had some sort of noodle soup with beef floating in it that WAS NOT COOKED ALL THE WAY. What? Can't I die from that?

I didn't like all the floating onion and green stuff eitther.

Guess I'm just not ready for Vietnam! The egg rolls were good, so I'll give it a star for that.

The pho here is much better than the 82nd location.  The broth is richer and they give you a lot more goodies in the bowl.   There is absolutely nothing to complain about here.

We also had the kimchi, excellent!  Just the right amount of sour and snap.   The fried eggrolls were housemade and it showed, with a generous ground pork filling and fresh crispy wrapper.   Husband had the coffee with sweet condensed milk, he enjoyed it.  They bring it in a drip cup so it isn't immediate gratification, but worth the wait.

I chose this place for the sesame balls, they were delicious, with a sweet coconuty filling.

I was full, happy, and maybe a bit sassy after eating a great meal.  Thanks to Laura, Don and Brad for meeting us there.  I greatly enjoyed watching Brad during his introduction to pho, and he did sweat bullets, even after removing most of the chili paste from his bowl.  Hope it only burns once, buddy.

This was my first time having Pho, I didn't want to buy into the hype, but it was a cold and rainy day, and it just sounded good.

I wasn't impressed by the first bite of the Beef Pho, I thought "why is everyone so crazy about this stuff?" But then I realized that maybe they start plain and I get to doctor it up to my liking.  A big spoonful of Sambal and a little bit of soy sauce, and I was soon gobbling it up at a record pace.  So good!!

The service left a lot to be desired though, we were seated quickly, but once our food was dropped off, that was the last time I saw the server. I did want to get something else to drink besides the complimentary tea, but my attempts to flag someone down were ignored.

And also, not knowing the sizes, the large is HUGE!!  It was only 50 cents more, so I thought maybe the small was really small, but my oh my.  I went with my husband and we had an entire bowl leftover (which we happily ate the next day).  One large is probably good to split, or a small if you're really hungry.

I think I see a lot of Pho take-out in my future.

I'm back in town for the holidays visiting family and being from San Jose I wanted to find the best place in town to get Pho so I could compare it to the always reliable bay area Pho restaurants.  Overall this place is extremely delicious and gives the bay area a run for its money!

I ordered the number one special, large of course, which included if my memory serves me right; fatty flank, tripe, soft tendon and a few other things.  Overall the meat was delicious and cooked well and the noodles were pretty good.  The best part of the dish though was the broth, five stars for the broth!  Maybe it was the cold weather that was making it taste even better but it was delicious!

The service was quick and for a Pho place they were surprisingly good at filling my water and they even served tea with the meal as well.

My girlfriend from San Jose would kill me for saying this but I feel that Portland has a solid pho restaurant in this one and when I'm in the area I will definitely be back here again for my pho fix!

The broth here is really good.  It may be that because of a severe hangover and not feeling so hot in first place, but I didn't care all that much for the Pho Ga that I got here.  The chicken had skin on some pieces, and gristle.  The server harassed us mercilessly into ordering, even though my friend was not ready, and came over three different times within 5 minutes.  Then he was not to seen again!  I think I like Pho Jasmine better, as they have lovely, thinly sliced breast meat in their chicken pho.  The veggie salad rolls are pretty decent.

* Vietnamese Iced Coffee...very strong..will make you super hyper and won't shut up for at least couple hours before the caffeine crash...

I would not say I am a Pho expert, but I've certainly been around the block with it more than a few times.  Mostly when I'm sick because it's one of the only menu items that clears my sinuses (and fires up my taste buds) without having to ask for extra spice.

We saw families of Vietnamese people seated around the entire restaurant and that was entirely comforting.  You know when Vietnamese momma is spoon feeding baby pho it has to be for a reason.

And though I love to say "Pho Hung" in a very dirty old man kind of way, I think Pho Hung should be renamed PhoSheezy.

So the round eye pho was absolutely splendid and remains to this day one of the only soups known to man to actually fill my man belly.  I was stuffed and not in the bbq buffet kind of way.  In the way where you know for sure you have healed holes deep within the crevices of your soul.

It gets this white boy's approval!

Why do I always Yelp when I'm hungry? Hmmm, maybe I get hungry because I am yelping about great food. Food like they feed you at Pho Hung.

The pho here is delicious, but when it's hot outside, sometimes the mind wanders from a massive bowl of soup, however delicious.

That's why I can't think of a better summer meal than a #37. It's bun, or vermicelli noodles, with grilled pork and egg rolls. The pork strips and egg rolls are browned and flavorful, the noodles plentiful, thin, and white. It comes with cilantro, peanuts and stuff on top, and a little bowl full of a clear sauce of some kind) on the side. I usually pour it all on top.

Then, of course, sitting on the side of every table, is what makes pho joints such shining examples of what's great about america's melting pot: The veritable metropolis of delectably unidentified sauces awaiting your decision: how much? how many?? *which ones*???

I say go for it. My motto: "You can't go wrung at Pho Hung!"

Ok... well... I only pun when I'm hungry.

Pho Hung.. the reason I joined Yelp - so I can rave a bit about it.

First off.. I think that this is the best Pho joint I've been to in Portland so far.

I got really into Pho when I was down in LA and have been trying to find a Pho place that rivals the delicious ones I've had when I was in Cali. It turned out to be much harder then I expected. However, Pho Hung has definitely turned out to be the best here.

The broth is DELICIOUS. The bowl fills you up and I always leave happy.
Unlike several Pho resturants in town this place gives you the option if you want some tripe or tendon in your soup. Small bowl is $6 Large bowl is $6.50 (doesn't make sense but whatever).
I enjoy their drinks and have tried several from their menu. Granted - only entry I've ever had here was Pho - it was enjoyable.
The place is not upscale by any means the staff here is great.
mm.. 3 minutes for my Pho to come out and even that is hard to wait when you really want to start chowing down on the soup.

I had the beef pho (Flank and Steak). It was good. It wasn't oily like some pho can be. It was priced well, the service was good and it came with tea which is always a welcome plus. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because I think they should probably invest more in the ambiance of the place. You can tell they don't spend money on decor. But maybe if they did, then things would change in a bad way, too.
Oh, also about the raw beef, the meat is so thing that the hot water cooks it. So, it's not "medium" for very long, just dunk it in the soup. :)

This place is alright...  I used to go there alot (before I found pho nam)mainly for the bubble drinks.  But back to the pho everytime I eat the pho I would get a headache...I thought it was just me soo I took my friend there...Same thing he got a headache too.  Then my friend had told me about pho nam. So I went there, not only the pho tastes better..no more headaches!!!

Excellent - broth and quality of ingredients seems to be a bit fresher than Pho Van.  Though I'm a fan of both.

82nd Av  - can't beat it for Pho.  Go that way anytime you need some...

I hate to be a party pooper but I would've given this place a four or five star if they had more vegetarian options.  That's me!  I'm a vegetarian!  But I brought my friend who is not, and she loved the pho... she did mention they were shy on the noodle.  She did love the broth and the meat, she said it lived up to her expectation.  I'll have to say the vegetarian vermicelli with vegetarian egg roll was just okay.  I remember I had a better version at the food cart in downtown.  It came out to be fairly cheap for a dinner place, like $7.75  The service staff was really nice too.  Very attentive and helpful when I ask them questions about vegetarian options.  The place is not much of a atmosphere... but this is kind of what you get when you go to an authentic tasty place.  I think I'll rate this place higher if I fuck'n just suck it up and eat meat again.
BTW, if this is your first time visiting Pho Hung, please don't get scared of the "beginner" section.  I guess if you've never had pho you would go to that section, but I assume most people who show up here knows what they want... that three meat combo pho bowl!  LARGE PLEASE.  Except for me.
