This is the closest place to get Pho for me. If you want to count getting on a bus to get to the train station and then taking the train for 10 mins as being close! But I digress.
This is definitely a local joint as there's always a good amount of patrons in here. I normally go with my two staples that I get at any Vietnamese restaurants - Pho #1 or the rice noodles with pork and spring rolls. I love the fish sauce that comes with the dry rice noodles. Their spring rolls are excellent - always hot and fresh. I also love getting the Vietnamese lemonade to wash everything down. They also do have bahn mi here. It's pretty decent for this area I suppose. Service is quick and efficient. If you're in this neighborhood, stop by for some good Vietnamese at a solid price.
Very fresh produce! Great food.
Not a place to come in for great service or ambiance, but the food is yummy. I'll probably be back.
This is probably the first Vietnamese restaurant to come to Brooklyn. I remembered when it just opened. I was in HS. Oddly enough, this is the first time and place I tried Vietnamese food, despite my best friend being half Vietnamese (and her mom's a great cook). I tried the pho at my friends' insistence. Wow. It's like a gift from heaven. It was that good and started my life-long love affair with pho. I did expand beyond that to try several different dishes since my friends and I used to come here all the time. Everything was amazing. Five stars all around. Service was never too bad either.
Fast forward a number of years. When I was visiting the parents, I had to go back to try what I thought was the best Vietnamese food ever. I don't know if it was an off day or I had tried so many better places or whether their quality went downhill, but I was not impressed. Maybe it was a mix of these. I ordered the pho and it tasted a little funky and didn't have base flavor it should have. So disappointing, as before that day, I'd rave about this place non-stop.
As far as service, it's always been ok. They don't rush to wait on you hand and foot but they don't neglect you either.
Portions were huge and I enjoyed my meal despite my companion's refusal to eat anything. I had summer rolls and bun with spring rolls and pork. I was a bit surprised that the spring rolls seemed to just be filled with meat but I mean, I shouldn't complain about having more pork in my meal. Service was ok, it was busy though. I've had better summer rolls but it doesn't matter, I got to cover them in peanut sauce. I wish I lived closer because this same meal would have cost at least 50% more in Manhattan.
Great value for money as the Pho is consistently good. As all Pho lovers know the key is having a great soup base with the noodles not under/over cooked. Also i'm Chinese so i'm not into the true Vietnamese Pho where the beef/tripe has a sulphuric/ heavy urine smell. The lemongrass porkchops are also good, but the deep fried spring rolls are greasy. Also you get the odd Formlinka and Lumorbh - Geido Princess, adding to the ambiance.
In comparison to Pho Bang on Mott in Chinatown, Pho Hoai has larger portions, better tasting soup, and noodles are cooked more consistently. But compared to Pho 79 in LA, no comparison. On par with Pho 98 in Ho Chi Ming.
It's close to my home so accessibility isn't a problem.
Pho Hoai is always pretty crowded but even with a party of six my friends and I are seated about two minutes in.
The portions for the food are HA-UGEEEE, most of the times I can't finish the gargantuan bowl of soup. But it's good because you get what you're paying for (and trust me, the prices are cheap!)
Unfortunately the service isn't people friendly and the waiters don't bring food out in the order we ask them to (and on several occasions forget to bring out certain drinks and whatnot), and the bathroom is right next to the kitchen so hearing the clattering of plates and ringing of bells makes me a bit uncomfortable.
This is was like 1st viet resturant on Avenue U. But seriously, I've tasted better. Not saying that this place is completely bad but just not THAT good. It's only fair to give it 3 stars.
This was my first time going to this restaurant. My friend who invited me is a regular and enjoys the food there. We ordered vegetable rolls and a vietnamese version of egg rolls. The vegetable rolls were delicious. The fried egg rolls were not so good.
When my beef pho arrived, I was excited. After one taste, my chop sticks fell. The taste and smell were horrific. My friend ordered the same thing and loved it. It just did not agree with me. I almost vomited immediately. I did not eat another bite.
My friend said to send it back. I called the waiter and he got the manager. The manager came and said that he can't take it off because I ate it, even though I ate one bite. I never heard of anything like this. This is shady trashy business. He took half off.
I ended up ordering the chicken with the pho noodles but not in the soup. It was good. The waiter was very attentive.
The management was very disrespectful and acted very offended that I did not enjoy the pho after one bite. They were not courteous. I have never heard of paying half for something they take back. I could see if I ate some of it, but one bite, seriously? They need to learn best practices. Because of this, I will never go there again. There have to be better Vietnamese restaurants with class.
used to be good. food quality is declining.
I think i had this place way too many times that this place is just good to me. Prices are definitely affordable, though they recently raised their prices on some dishes. I tried a lot of their dishes, and I was not once disappointed. However, I usually don't find myself stuffed after a meal unless i get an appetizer with it lol.Overall, this place is a great place to go with friends for a cheap, good meal.
Locals as do I, love this place, bringing along our friends and families of all ages here. Though favored by people all around, their service isn't friendly but nor is it arrogant unless you've been memorized by the waiters and it isn't the cleanest of places either. However the food is cheap (always a plus in my book), always superb and you can sit around to relax instead of being shoved out the minute you're finished.
Oh I don't mean to downplay the restaurant, and it was probably only a one in a million thing. When I say not the cleanest of places I once found a giant dust bunny at the bottom of my glass of water... Other than that food = deli-sh and cheap
Great food I love there spring rolls, beef cubes, rice vermicelli.
Busy place, but I manage to get a seat fast. Summer rolls are awesome. The fish bake is amazing. Prices are GREAT! WKTU or Lite FM is usually playing, but I won't count it against them. They've messed up my order several times in a row though.
I love this local Vietnamese restaurant, and apparently so do the locals. I have never been to this place when it isn't at least 3/4 full. And, we tend to be the only non-Vietnamese people in the place, which is a good sign in my book. We end up taking out a lot because the place is so busy. I have my qualms when it comes to Asian food, but everything I have tried here is pretty good. I always enjoy their soups.
