After recently moving from Little Saigon in Garden Grove to Los Feliz, I was craving some Vietnamese and I was too hungry to cook, so I decided to try this place.
The first thing that I loved is seeing Banh Xeo (fried crepe) on the menu. We tried it and it was really good.
We also shared a Bun Cha Gio Thit Nuong (Vermicelli with Egg Roll and Charbroiled Beef).
Now I really liked both dishes because they were delicious and fresh, but I must say, if you're looking for authentic, this spot isn't it.
The "Thit Nuong" as stated on the menu which should be like BBQ beef was more like Bo Xao Xa Ot (Sautee Lemongrass Beef). It tasted great, I actually love ANYTHING Xao Xa Ot so I was happily surprised because I actually prefer it from the regular BBQ beef. But if you are craving the sweet, charbroiled BBQ taste, then you've gotta go someplace else. The Cha Gio (Egg rolls) were on point.

I want to go back and try the Pho, and get a complete taste of the place.

Their menu is very small and simple, and I give them extra points for being open relatively late and for the place being so cutely decorated and clean. A combination of modern artsy you'd expect in Los Feliz along with traditional Vietnamese flare.

Expensive as far as what I'm used to in Little Saigon, but cash only just like in Little Saigon HAHA.

I have been here so many times in the past two years, it is a shame i have taken so long to proclaim my love for Pho Cafe!

i always have the vegetarian pho, even after trying a couple of the meatier options--i just love the mushroom broth with fried tofu so much.

Even for take-out, their soups are delicious and hearty--perfect comfort food.

After a couple failed attempts at trying to find this place on 2 different occasions...I was finally able to take some friends here because of good reviews in LA magazine, Yelp, etc..and saw that it was close to downtown

bottom line: this place is not authentic.  Had the bbq pork rice vermicelli, and it was greasy, smothered in grease.  I love pork fat...but this dish is supposed to be light and fresh tasting!  my friends ordered pho, it was decently salted, but lacked any of the deep and complex flavor that comes from simmering pho broth with beef bones and a proper bouquet garnis of spices.

now I know how the hipster crowd fits into tight jeans...i wouldn't wanna eat the food in this part of town either!

I finally tried this place more commonly known as "hipster pho."  It's like you're in on a cool secret when you find this place with no signage (it's next to Crown Escrow).  The inside is sparse.  The kitchen opens to a long narrow dining area with white and brown walls devoid of any art or pictures.  There is seating for 36 on burnt orange colored plastic chairs.  I suppose this is hipster paradise.  Of course it's cash only because hipsters love their anonymity and eschew the credit establishment.

I ordered the #3 spring rolls with charbroiled lemongrass steak, shrimp, vermicelli and herbs, and the #12 pho with rare steak and tendon.  There were two rolls in the order.  Fresh-tasting, but the vermicelli was overdone.  I really liked the herbs and the steak though.  The peanut sauce was thick and pretty good.  The pho was just okay.  The noodles were a nice texture and the steak and tendon were tender and plentiful.  But the broth, as the most important component, was disappointing.  It tasted heavy when it should be light and fragrant.

There are better options in the area, but the big plus for me is that hipster pho is nearby and they're open daily from 11 am - midnight!

First saw this place in a book listing "hot LA restaurants".  The décor looked interesting and simple.  Was really difficult to find.  Parking was limited in the lot and I feel I was lucky to find a spot.  Next to a Thai place and a Mongolian BBQ (next to try).

Never would have believed I would become a Pho connoisseur.  Guess spending time in the OC and being so close to good Pho, has gotten me trying a lot.  Never had a Vietnamese restaurant give me a fortune cookie at the end of my meal, or deliver a bill for that matter.  A little different than I am used to and what is the norm in Little Saigon.  Also a shade more expensive.

All in all, this is a good place for simple food.  Was I blown away, no.  But I will be back.  Had the Pho Tai Gan, which was pretty tasty.  They also have a good selection of beer and at least a couple that I hadn't tried before.  I'll probably try one of the bowls and the crunchy rolls next time.  And I have to try the Taiwan beer.  There aren't too many places that you can find authentic pho near downtown, so this is a good find.

Planning on a follow up after my next visit.  Promise.

Clean
good service
fresh veggies
flavorful broth

i'll keep this on my short list of pho places.

no sign with their name outside...
not much for ambiance - but the quality is what counts, right?

why not 5 stars?  perhaps i'll update my review after trying it again... they might get an upgrade... but to get a 5 star review right off the bat - well, they didn't have that little "je ne sais quoi" to take it over the top... but there is potential.

cash only.

'What a strange discovery' was my first thought when I arrived at Pho Cafe. I found it quite interesting that a legitimate pho restaurant existed within Hollywood's eclectic eastern neighbor, Silver Lake.

I came here with a friend who suggested it as an option since we were within proximity. First of all, there's no signage indicating you are at Pho Cafe (at least that I remember). This isn't one of those places you just discover organically, unless you live in the area.

Parking is available inside of the strip mall's parking lot. However, the lot is limited with very tight spaces. I'd just park at a meter on the street. The quarters are worth avoiding the likely door dings you'll receive.

The inside decor has a very modern and clean feeling, which are characteristics you generally do not find in pho restaurants. It's a quite long and narrow dining room. There are tables on one side and the open kitchen on the other, separated by a tall counter. The tables are very close to one another. You're going to hear your neighbors talking, and they'll probably hear you as well.

I ended up ordering Pho Tai ($6.75), which is your basic pho with rare steak. Everything tasted fine and had good flavor. As I generally do, I put in a number of jalapenos to spice up the soup. However, the jalapenos here were significantly spicier than others I have been served at pho restaurants. It could have been a one time thing, but something to keep in mind.

The egg rolls (cha gio - $4.50) were also pretty good. I feel like it's pretty hard for a restaurant to execute any fried food poorly, but what do I know, I write SQL and VB. Either way, I'd order them.

Their restroom had green lighting - something I thought was interesting. Also, their hand soap has a very fresh, green smell. I guess that's refreshing.

It's cash only and they open till midnight ... great for a late night snack.

Pho for white people.  I'm a white person, but a Pho snob, being from SF and having traveled in Vietnam and gained weight, eating so much Pho. This Pho-for-Hipsters is fine and fresh, but the real pho experience is elsewhere; my choice in LA is Pho 87 on the edge of Chinatown & Solano Canyon. This place is Hipster central, having their first pho experience, which makes me glad.  It's a good place when Pho 87 is closed, which is after 5pm.

After killing over an hour driving a friend home to the Westside during rush hour and then heading back across town to Hollywood, my buddy & I were getting grumpy. We were tired, hungry and just wanted some comfort food. When I thought of getting pho, he said that he knew just the place. We wanted to hit a bar in Echo park later, so Pho Cafe was right on our way!

Even though it's right on Sunset, it's a little tough to find because there's no sign out front. It occupies an all-white space in a little strip mall, and the line of people out the door is really the only thing to give the hint that something good might be happening there. While there was a line when we arrived, it moved really quickly. Also, once we ordered, the food came out within minutes. They kinda have an assembly line setup going, but fortunately it doesn't have a negative effect on the quality. The pho was exactly what I expected. Hot, salty, earthy... delicious! Although, it was a bit too spicy for my taste because my dumb ass got a little too liberal with the Siracha bottle!

The dishes all seemed to be very reasonably priced, which combined with the quality and location would seem to explain the packed house. And to top the evening off, as we were leaving, George Michael Bluth and Maeby Fünke themselves walked in. Good to see those crazy cousins still hang after Arrested Development. So there you have it, it ain't no banana stand, but Pho Cafe is Bluth family approved!

Some really good pho. 3 cautions:

1. You will be surrounded by hipsters. There may possibly be a line of them outside.
2. Cash only. The nearest ATM is a quick jay-walking excursion across Sunset.
3. It's expensive for pho, but still under $10.

Decent selection of import beer. Good tripe. Great spring rolls.

One of my fav places in the city... Especially when it's cold, rainy, late or you're tired and need food quick. This is like that comfy, old, familiar place around the corner from your parents house - except that it's not ugly, falling apart, and doesn't have that slighty-old-water smell. ;) It's SUPER modern, which I love. I also love 'hole in the wall' Pho too, don't get me wrong. But we're too used to crappy design and architecture in LA, so this place is a really nice change. While normally low-light places are best for dates, this is actually a really cool place for a date. Maybe there's something to be said for looking into someone's eyes while slurping up soup and making a mess? {smile}

Unlike some of the previous reviewers, I love the stark white atmosphere and hanging lights... I'm only 5'4" though, so would never have a problem bumping my head on anything above! Yes the parking lot is tiny, but again, we have a warped perception of things in the urban-sprawl we call home: There is TONS of parking along Sunset, so park down the block or around the corner and WALK. If I can walk a few blocks in heels, I think you can probably survive. ;)

Back to the Pho... It's all delicious and always hits the spot (the fried spring rolls are great to share...). As soon as i feel a cold coming on I head here for hot soup and cold beer. Hehe...

Only in Silverlake can a restaurant have no sign but some how stay in business.  Seriously. You feel cool going to this place simply for knowing it exists!
So tonight was the night- I was going to have PHO for the first time! I am writing this review as a newly de-virginized pho eater, so forgive me if it lacks reputable comparisons.
I honestly really liked it! I got the shrimp and steak spring rolls and the chicken pho. Both were amazing. Total bill was $13.75 and I could have shared it with someone! Super good. The only reason its not a 5 star is because the noodles were seriously clumped together when I got home.  That might be because I sat on the 101 north for 45 minutes in rush hour before I consumed my "to-go"...  not sure.

Oh yeah, those green pepper looking things are hotter than the surface of mercury, so STAY AWAY. I burned a few layers of my dermis off after popping one in my mouth like it aint no thang. Im still recovering.

In true Governator style, I WILL BE BACK!

Really good authentic pho for the area. I came here on a date and it was my first time at the sign-less establishment.  I had the rare steak and meatball pho. The steak was thinly cut and as i ate it , it practically melted in my mouth.  It was good cut of meat. I appreciated it.

I liked the food and the bare bones decor. Luckily came when there was no line and we were seated pretty easily.

I was disappointed and afoot in high heels late one night guiding an out-of-town visitor with a hankering for Thai. We landed at a just-closed Rambutan, which I don't like that well anyway, and it was a fortuitous landing, as Pho Cafe was, like, open and stuff. They had a table waiting for us, and we sat, grateful if not excited, for the hard Eames knock-off chair.

I changed my snub-nosed tune when I looked at my neighbor's food, and then the menu's prices. I really changed my tune when I ordered my #19 (I think - steak and shrimp over noodles). KILLER flavor, delicious. Portion sizes are tremendous, and they're generous with meat and vegetables both.

Four stars instead of five for the aesthetics - the place has no sign, and it's brightly lit, and there are low lamps upon which to bump your head when you stand up. Also they only take cash.

But really this is a 4.5-star review; Pho Cafe has a parking lot and they deliver too. Service is excellent.

On my way out I asked if they were new, and they said they'd been in that same location for 7 years. What a trip Los Angeles is. You can find a gem of a place every day. She's a new city just waiting to unfurl for you. Cheesy, but splendidly true. Leave me alone. I have a fever.

Visited this place today because a friend suggested it. If not, I don't think I would've knew this place existed. Growing up in the San Gabriel Valley in a partially Vietnamese oriented family, Pho has definitely been one of our family favorites on a casual basis.

I ordered a Pho Tai. This was a basic rice noodle soup with rare beef. The order came rather quick but was a tad bit disappointed upon its arrival already. The scent of the pho broth here is awfully mild/subtle and lacks the aromatic spices (star anise, fennel, coriander, etc). The flavor of broth leans on the light side but wasn't bad in taste. The rare beef itself is what made them real different from any other Pho I've had. I'm certain that they either pound or marinate the meat in some way to give that slippery soft texture. For sure there's some preparation done.

Overall, this place would be noted the best since there's really no other restaurant around this area that serves Pho/other vietnamese entree. However, when compared to Westminster or San Gabriel Valley, they would've never made the cut and would've been long gone. I mean they're not bad but just does not live up to the rave if you're a real Pho fanantic.

At around $8 a bowl, you can get way better around San Gabriel Valley for less in cost and more in quantity. They have their own parking within the tiny plaza but it sucks since space is so limited. I would say 20 spots max. Oh free fortune cookie when you pay.

I've got to admit, this was some really good Pho.

I had the Pho Ga (chicken). The broth was extremely clean and tasty.  I couldn't really taste any MSG and its been a few hours and I haven't gotten the "itis" yet.  The chicken was all white meat, so that was a bit of a bummer for me because I like a mixture of white and dark.  There was just enough noodles and they were pretty tasty.

The vegetarian egg rolls are also worth trying.

There was 3 of us.  We all had a bowl of Pho, we split a portion of egg rolls and we all had a drink.  The total bill with tip came out to be $43. Not bad at all.

Pro: Delicious pho. The pho is a lot more refined feeling than other pho places. Broth is excellent. They give plenty of meat, of which it is very tender and delicious
Con: They don't take plastic for payment.

Summary: This outdoor no-sign pho establishment surprises despite being in Silverlake, not in Westminster.

With a cozy, lively interior, a crazily all green bathroom (with green light), this pho establishment is a bit different in how a bit more refined an inexpensive pho dish can become. Usually pho has a mish-mash of varying poor to good quality meat inside-- but at pho cafe, the the meat was universally juicy and tender (without huge fat pieces or overly chewy sections), and the appetizers were all great.

I should have read the yelp reviews before checking this place out - would've known beforehand that there's no sign. We drove back and forth a few times and then finally called them to ask where they are. Look for the mini-mall with the Rambutan Thai.

Decent pho - we thought the broth tasted a little different than other pho places but couldn't pinpoint what it was, but after reading other reviews, maybe it was just the lack of flavor that made it different. The beef was cut up differently  too, more in chunks rather than thin slices. Prices are higher than the pho places you'll find in SGV -  probably b/c the hipster customers may not know how much pho costs elsewhere. It was $8 for a bowl with everything, and the bowl was on the smaller side too. Overall a decent place if you need to cure your pho fix and you're in the area, but not someplace to go out of your way for. Plenty of better cheaper places in LA.

What a disappointment, Yelpers!
Expected authentic flavorfull spring rolls and pho noodle soup and got generic pre-prepared fare.  There are two Viet restaurants in Atwater that run circles around this place and have the hip scene, but include the quality.  Plus, this place is not only hard to find (I could live with that), but its so noisy you just can't even hear yourself think.

What is it about this place that makes it so appealing?? I can't really put my finger on it and I'm not quite sure how to word it.

You see, everything is simple. Everything except the food. There's no décor inside and they don't even have a sign up front with their name on it (my friends and I passed by the place a few times before noticing the address). Regardless of the fact that it has no sign and it's in a shopping center in Silver Lake, the place is packed. Even on a Tuesday night.

There's no over the top customer fondling either. You get what you ask for without the fake sugar coating for the sake of tips. Nothing stands out, which makes everything stand out.

And then, the food arrives. Hellooooooo PHO. We ordered an appetizer of spring rolls with lemongrass, steak and shrimp that came with this amazing peanut sauce. GOOD STUFF. My friends all ordered cold noodles, which they were extremely satisfied with. As for me? Of course I went with a nice, hot bowl of pho with rare steak, tendon and meat balls. SO good. SO satisfying. SO flavorful. It even made my sore throat feel happier. Now, THAT'S a good meal.

Only drawback? People were selling their bodies for a parking space. And that was on a Tuesday. Let's just say I got SUPER lucky that someone RIGHT in front of the café decided to leave as I arrived. Insanity, I tell ya!

So, my review of this place was apparently flagged by 'someone', consequently removed and was given an excuse that, and, I quote "because it lacks a legitimate first-hand experience as a consumer."

Yeah, whatever.

If you must insist, here's my first-hand experience:

First, plan on parking along Sunset. The strip mall it's in has limited parking all day.  Best to go on a Sunday to avoid paying for street parking. Why add an extra dollar or two on your bill? In this recession, yes, every fucking penny counts.

Second, it has no store sign and only accepts cash (I wonder why)

Third, the place is long and narrow. Concrete floors, and, I must admit, it has a good interior. I won't actually mind stealing a couple of their clear glass globe  lighting fixture. It'll be perfect for my kitchen.

Fourth, the menu is limited and occupies a half an A4, or is it A3, paper.  They do have, at the time of questioned first-hand experience, Taiwan Beer.

Fifth, the place has a high turnover. You'll finish your food in 5 minutes flat and you won't even know it. Well, they gotta make money, you know?

So, in the end, I'll say this again:

I don't know about you, but eating in an Asian restaurant and noticing that you're the only paying Asian customer is a sign that it's a really bad Asian restaurant, then, I don't know what is.

And yes, I'm Asian. Do you get it now?

Once last thing.  Can everyone just lighten up?

Here, have some bland, boring pho. I think you need it.

Yes, 'you.'

I am very partial to the rice noodle dishes.  The egg roles are a little on the smallish size but over all the beef and the pork noodle dishes are very good.

It is true this place has absolutely no sign other than number on the front which are sometimes obscured.  It is on the corner of sunset and silverlake in a strip mall.  There is not a lot of parking in the strip mall but there is normally plenty of street parking near by.  Normally there is a small crowd in front of the place in the evenings to kind of mark the place.   Inside, so you know you have the right place, is long and narrow with very modern furnishings.

Look for the place with no sign!

I like the spartan, ultra modern look of this place. Having been here for seven years (and all those years with no sign - apparently the owner never found a sign he liked), there is a serious clientele here.

You could tell that the pho broth was flavored right, I could detect  the hint of star anise. It wasn't the best I've ever had, but it was pretty darn good. I had the vermicelli noodle dish with eggrolls and lemon grass steak. I just HAD to order this because most vermicelli noodle dishes I see come with grilled pork. The meat was not exactly infused with lemon grass flavors, but it was tasty enough.

I also tried the vegetarian pho. No no no! Pho can't be vegetarian! However, I was pleasantly surprised. It was good, but kind of requires an acquired taste.

This spot is definitely a one of a kind Vietnamese restaurant. I looked around and did not see one remotely Vietnamese-looking person eating here however. I still think there are other tastier option out there, but probably not as trendy!

You the man!!!

After a long golf session, he suggested lunch at this place.
Yeah, the menu is amazing. The portion sizes are spot on!
And they have a pricey Hitachino nest pale beer!!! OMG!!! Its so light with an aromatic flavor, but not so overpowering. It's absolutely perfect to whet your tongue this summer.

Also, the iced Vietnamese coffee is delicious. It's laced with condensed milk; but if your sensitive to caffeine be ready to vacuum all-night long.
I ordered the bun, cold vermicelli rice noodles w/ egg rolls, shrimp, charbroiled lemongrass steak, peanuts and fresh herbs. This was well flavored and yet light and fresh.

The ambiance is simple and not to fancy.
Service is great! Properly timed and not so in your face!!!!
Prices are perfect!

Similar to a great lover, you know when a place deserves 5 stars... when you can revisualize the tastes, smells of your experience and dream about going back for some more!

Overall an okay experience.  The beef pho wasn't bad but the soup was indeed bland as stated by other reviewers and was a milky grayish color in comparison to the clear broth of other pho restaurants.  The meat in the pho was very tender and different than the brisket in most other pho dishes I've had elsewhere.  The meat was also a bit lacking in flavor.  Veggies that came with the pho were on the fresher side but not the freshest.  I like cilantro with my pho, and they didn't give any.  I spruced-up the flavor of the soup with sriracha sauce and some salt which seemed to help.   My point of reference for solid pho is the one from Golden Deli, which is exceedingly fresh and flavorful.

I also tried the fried vegetarian eggrolls and the beef spring rolls.  Both were very good.  The accompanying fish sauce was again different than the typical.

The prices are higher at Pho Cafe than other vietnamese places but still not "expensive".  Think $40 for a meal for two rather than $25 at other places.  I wouldn't have minded the additional cost were the experience as satisfying and as fresh as at other places.

As far as authentic, I'm not so concerned with authentic as I am with tasty.  Pho Cafe was okay on that point for me; it can hit the craving but may not hit the spot.  I went back to Golden Deli a day later and rediscovered what hit the spot for me.

I'm vietnamese and grew up eating tons of pho. Pho is like crack to me. So when I moved here from Seattle (where there are tons of good pho places), I thought I'd visit this place since I live in the area. I gave this place two stars because their pho was not crack. It was more like Top Ramen. I wanted my crack! Needless to say, every time I ate there the broth was really bland. But at least they had banh xeo (vietnamese crepes) which is really hard to find in a lot of vietnamese restaurants.

I grew up in the neighborhood, and always make it a point to come to Pho Cafe when I visit the folks.  I brought my papa with me on my last visit.  He was really impressed with how busy the restaurant was on a sunny Saturday afternoon, especially since they do not have a sign outside.  I've never had a bad experience and will always come back.

I had low expectations for Pho Cafe given that it's the kind of place that honkeys like to claim has the "best pho" while Asians roll their eyes. But when you're on the east side and have a hankering for soupy noodles, it's not a bad choice.

What I like:
-You're not paying much more for the "ambience". Yeah it has modern furniture, but it's still a diner and is priced appropriately.
-The rare beef is fresh and tender.
-The portions are sensible. You'll get a much bigger pot of pho if you go someplace in K-town, but you'll also get the dreaded "water belly" if you actually finish those portions.
-It's still better than Gingergrass.

What I don't:
-The broth, arguably the backbone of pho, is on the sterile side here. It lacks the aromatic, sweaty, savory qualities of a classic broth that's been stewing for ages.
-The noodles are clumped together.
-The crowds. In the time it takes to get seated during peak hours, you can actually drive to a more authentic place.

This place is always packed... hence all the views... So don't come here if your hungry and definitely not starving... (I'm confident this is how Rambutan picked up a lot of their clients)
Don't come here if you feel ugly or roots are showing- 100% interrogation lighting

WHEN TO COME fo PHO @ the Cafe:
If you think your friend is stealing your dog's toys and re-gifting them to hers
If you suspect your LA lover is secretly a Clippers Fan (I'd bury that secret)
IF your Best friend owes you money and you need to find out When they will have the $10 bucks

Here's my 2 cents:
What's up with the obnoxious lights: Theory- so you can get in and get out
If it's CASH Only... say so...Loud and clear

Food: I don't eat meat so my views are limited but the Vegetarian Pho was... alright (I was starving).  It was a gigantic bowl of broth, 4 mushrooms, 4 strips of tofu and the typical plate of bean sprouts, spicy peppers, basil with 2 limes

Japanese Microbrews: $8 bucks for Hitachino and they warn you prior to serving you?

Service is efficient- which I'm comfortable with... I don't need a greeting upon arrival or smiles... just a good beer to subside the hunger pangs after eating here...

For $10 (incl tax and tip) I've had much better. The broth was mediocre. I've never had a meat ball where I didn't care for until today. Only good thing about this place is I didn't get a side of thumb with my soup. But what is pho without a side of thumb???
Btw, to find this place, look for a store  front without a sign next to an escrow place.

This place doesn't even have a sign; how do people know it's there?! ... No matter, I came with JT one Saturday at 11am for an early lunch awhile back. In reading some of the reviews (I didn't before going, it was on a whim), I'm glad we didn't have to wait a long time. As a matter of fact, we just walked in and were seated right away.

We both ordered pho and shared eggrolls. The eggrolls were good and crispy. For the pho (tendon and rare beef), I asked for the rare beef slices on the side. I was really impressed with the quality of the meat they gave me - thick slices with fantastic marbling. Definitely above standard compared to other pho places! But also for some reason, I rememered thinking their prices were a little higher than what I was used to in San Gabriel and Little Saigon. I'll attribute that to the higher quality beef and the fact that it was Silverlake ...

I would give this place 2.5 stars really.

It is not bad by all means. It just isn't great.

I think LuSub down the street in Silverlake is better... but the decor there isn't. I would kill the decor the save a buck or two.

this place pho-ckin' rocks. i love it can't get enough. get the number 17 - its the cold vermicelli noodles with beef and a pork eggroll. this plus a limeaid and tip will cost you 13 bucks but who the pho-ck cares its just awesome.

everyone i take here falls in love with it. except my dad. hes a vietnam vet and had a massive flash back. bad news bears.

just kidding by the way. he dug it. the restaurant i mean, not nam. nam was brutal.

any way, yeah best pho in town.

one caveat: the service is real pho-ckin bad. i've asked for water before like 5 times and never got it. on my way out i told the waiter to forget about the water and he had no clue what the pho-ck i was talking about. go figure.

Sure it's nice and clean, especially for an asian restaurant. Sure, it tastes ok, and it is conveniently located in the LA area. But if you're a foodnatic looking for some real pho with good broth, this isn't the place for you. The broth here tastes awfully bland. This place has got the ambiance, hipster crowd, and a good location... but is somewhat lacking in the flavour department. Bummer.
