Review from Andy L.
Sacramento, CA
Best thing about it is that it's open til 3am. Can you say, "late night pho"?!
Of course, this sometimes leads to unsavory elements... like the obnoxious frat boys at the booth across from ours. But, for the sake of transparencey, I must admit that I was the only one at my table not baked off their ass, though I had gotten a fairly decent contact high in the car which made my chopsticking style rather cracktastic, and might also explain why I dumped so many jalapenos and chili paste in my dish...
As for my dish: their pho is pretty decent. I had a combination one, with five different cuts of beef in it, from sirloin to tripe to whatever else. Most interesting. Fresh basil, mint, jalapeno slices (in addition to the pickled sort on the table) and bean sprouts to sprinkle in that shizzle. The requisite srihacha (which I lovingly refer to as "cock sauce"), and, surprise! Chinese chili paste. Score!
They also have some interesting drinks here... they were out of the avocado shake, but I got the coconut, and I can vouch for its deliciosity. Their red bean drink looks good.
One of my compatriots got a lemon chicken, which had oranges on it, strangely, and seemed overly sweet to me. Wouldn't you want more tartness on LEMON chicken? But, a better question might be why they have cheap Chinese dishes at a Vietnamese place... hm, most suspicious...
But, hey, the waiter was nice enough to split our meal four ways, cash and card. I personally don't like that kind of calculating, but my stoner friends are surprisingly exact, especially considering how cheap this place is. But I digress...
Oh, they also have t-shirts!! With all the cheesy uses of the word "pho" possible. Real gems include: "Pho shizzle!" "What the Pho?!" and "Motherphocker". Or maybe that last one was just "Phock You". I forget...
Anywhose, great place to go before the drive-ins or the indoor race track next door! *thumbs up* -
Review from Peter K.
This place feels like fast food Vietnamese food but a slight step up from it...
PROs
They are FAST.
They are CHEAP. $6.25 per small Pho meal. It can definitely be filling.
CONs
I ordered the #9 which was the Pho that came with Beef Flank and Beef Slices. The beef slices come rare which I enjoyed for the most part but you could tell they pre-froze them and it doesn't taste as fresh. The Beef Flank wasn't that great. It came with a lot of tendons that aren't typical on a flank cut of meat.
The service is mediocre. It's not that they're bad, but they don't smile or anything.
The bathrooms STINK. I'm not asking for it to smell like roses, but there is an awful odor coming from there. -

10 years ago = 4 stars
5 years ago = 3 stars
Today = 2 stars
Tomorrow = ?
Their broth and quality in their dishes are their biggest downfall. They would serve their Pho Tai (rare steak) near room temperature with 4-5 slices of meat.
On another occasion, I ordered the rice pork chop plate. Waiting patiently for 25 minutes, the waiter comes out with the plate and I noticed the pork chop was 75% FAT and rice drenched from the pork fat. I was utterly in shock when they brought out a piece of fat. I told the waiter and he had the fucking nerve to insist that I request a piece of meat with no fat on it next time. HAHAHA. WTF?
So I asked him, what does it say on the fucking MENU? PORK CHOP BITCH! NOT PIECE OF PORK CHOP FAT! LOL. -

Food quality excellent, but disappointing quantity...my seafood noodle bowl came with one shrimp the size of a quarter. Had to argue with the server to get 3 more.

Order in the fifties; don't be afraid of the shrimp paste cake, it's good. Service is slightly better than decent. The Pho is good as well.

Hella good so far. Been there three time and am never disappointed. Love their. Oodle soups, especially the the roast duck. Great walnut shrimp too. Decent service and decent prices. Open late too. All in all it's great food for the price. Probably could get away charging higher prices

I usually get the steak pho or some vermicelli. The egg rolls are super yummy too; the spring rolls are sometimes good and fresh but other times seem pre-made and weird. My brother has gotten the orange chicken and said it was delicious. I mainly go for my pho cravings - cheap and satisfying. The waiters don't seem to understand English too well, so if this is your first time attempting this place/Vietnamese food, go with someone who knows what's on the menu lol

I've been here over a handful of times over the last three months (even witnessed a failed Pho-King Challenge), and I gotta say... This place has been consistent every time, during lunch rush, on quality food, cleanliness, and friendly service. I tried just the rare steak this time (instead of the combo), and it's very hearty and tasty! I am a legit fan, and I can hardly wait for my next visit.

If yelp gave out awards for Most Improved Restaurant, I would pick Hoa Viet on bradshaw :-b
I always order my norm- #53 with chicken. The egg rolls are so good..crispy, meaty, and not oily. I also like that they put taro in their egg rolls. The chicken is always tender and full of flavor. The shrimp is no longer dry and overcooked, but I think they can go bigger on the shrimps though. Lol. The shrimp cake is okay. Not the best bun ga nuong, but a good asian staurant for this area. -

Sadly, I am forced to lower my rating of this place. Don't get me wrong - I still LOVE the way the food tastes -- but I just can't stomach the uncleanliness.
Although I shamefully admit that watching a couple of mice play hide and seek in the restaurant while I waited for take-out wasn't enough to cure my Pho Bac Hoa Viet cravings (sadly, I only managed to avoid the restaurant for a couple of months before deciding to go back), my last visit with them was enough.
I convinced my entire family to join me at the restaurant to satisfy a Vietnamese food craving I had while in town and swear that one out of every three dishes, cups, or eating utensils had some sort of foreign food matter on it. Horrid. I can no longer justify their cleanliness with their taste. I'm hoping that they get their act back together because I really DO love their #53!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Since writing my last review, I've been back. The food is OK. It's still not what it used to be. But it does the job for a quick pho fix. I
I also tried the bun tom thit nuong (grilled port rice noodles with shrimp), which was too salty. And the shrimp was tiny and didn't have much flavor. And why is it yellow? Must have curry or something.
It is better than it was last time I had it. I'd give it two-and-a-half stars if I knew how.
I find it funny that my comment about the chow fun being pretty darn good is at the top of their profile, since I previously gave it one star and said that it USED to be.
Pho Bac Hoa Viet must be giving into Yelp's extortion of making businesses pay for positive reviews to be the focus.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I go here at work sometimes with my co-workers. I am not a huge fan, but when I'm craving pho noodles, this is pretty much the best in the area they have to offer. (If anyone knows of a better Vietnamese place close by, please share!)
Portions are big and rather cheap too. So I can't complain about that... But I have found a hair in my food before :/ To this day, I can't order their chow fun.
You can pretty much never go wrong with their charbroiled dishes though. I love that stuff. -
Review from Tamara S.
I wasn't a big fan, but there weren't many vegetarian options here and I wasn't particularly hungry when we arrived. We stopped here on a whim after seeing a movie at the drive-in just a little ways away.
My darling and I split the vegetarian chow mein. It was super greasy, and way too salty. When we were done, thinking about it made me a little sick to my stomach.
Our friend liked his pho. Service was not friendly, but efficient. Prices were only alright.
I do want a shirt from their pho challenge--they say "Pho King" or "What the Pho" across the back. Unfortunately there's no way in hell I could eat 4 pounds of pho, especially considering I don't eat meat. ;)Listed in: the left coast

Always here for lunch with my cousin during the work week. It gets busy, but definitely one of the better Pho places around or even better of the other Hoa Viets.
Probably because it's operated by the younger crowd that has pull with the owner.
They've gotten so much more Americanized on service level. Now they just need to not skimp so much on the tripe! -

Sacramento, CA
Came here again around midnight and had the beef stew. Tasty - pretty good meat to noodle ratio. Tender beef, not too many chunks of fat/tendon (my preference), good broth. My gf ordered some pork chops or something, and they also tasted pretty good. I think they were charbroiled. Lots of flavor and not dry. I'm starting to wonder if they have any bad dishes.
::edit::
I've been coming here a lot lately since my last review, and I can say that the charbroiled meat is always tasty if you don't feel like having pho. The beef stew also seems to vary - one time I had about 90% beef, the other time it was about 30% beef/70% beef gristle. Also, don't order the fried calamari appetizer - it's obviously not fresh, nor super crispy, and has an odd taste.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I like this place. I have been going there every time I am in the area since 2006. The Pho is good, not the best I have ever had, but about 7 on a scale of 10. The service is fast, and the location is easy to get in and out of.
But you know what's really different: Some nights they are open until 3 am. Where else can you go really late and get decent Pho? You can't even do that after Midnight in Little Saigon in San Jose!!! -
Review from Julietta B.
Sacramento, CA
After a weekend of partying in the "back 40" (cow tippin, beer can shootin, atv ridin) at the other in-laws I was in need of some peace, quiet and easy nourishment. I'm taking in the beautiful scenery as I'm roaring down the Jackson highway. Have you ever driven along Hwy 16 at sunset? It's something you need to see. Beautiful pinks, oranges, purples and blues as the sun slowly descends over the hills. Just amazing!
So the thought of a warm bowl of Pho pops into my head and I veer onto Bradshaw shortly arriving at my destination. The restaurant is a little dated and in need of a remodel. I think it was a Lyon's Diner before and the present owners just kept it as is. I decided to take my meal for carry out. Shrimp Spring Rolls (2 for $4.75) and a large order of Chicken Pho. My order came out in 8 minutes and the broth was blazing hot (freshly made).
When I arrived home I spread my meal out on the table and started assembling my Pho bowl. The broth was okay, but I still prefer Kim's (downtown). Plenty of chicken, bean sprouts, sliced red onion, chopped green onion, cilantro, basil, noodles, and slices of jalapeno pepper. They threw in packets of Sriracha and Hoisin (yay, I didn't have to ask). Overall, it was good. Same for the spring rolls. The pieces were huge and they even cut them in half. More noodles and lettuce than shrimp and the peanut sauce was peppery/spicy, so again, I prefer my downtown spot.
Oh, for you record breakers out there they do have a food challenge at specified times during the weekday/weekend:
"Pho King Challenge: 2 lbs. noodles and 2 lbs. meat, finish in 60 minutes" during certain hours weekdays and weekends. If you accomplish this task, they will add your photo into the winner's picture frame on the wall and receive a t-shirt. Hmm...I wonder if Adam Richman (MVF) likes Pho???Listed in: Far East Flava

oh Hoa Viet, how you've grown on us. This place isn't the best of the best, but it sure has heart. The servers are fluent in English and Vietnamese, and the pho here is always served with a smile. What I REALLY came for was the Pho Challenge! 2 lbs. of rice noodles & 2lbs. of meat, which is graciously drowned in broth and you get 45 minutes to finish it. Sadly, I must admit defeat alongside my friends that are put on the wall of FAIL, but I will say they have food there that's worth going for at 1am.

Cheap. Big. Tasty. Just the way I like it.
They would've gotten 4 stars back in the day (8+ years ago) because their pho broth tasted better, their sizes were even bigger and prices were cheaper. Their egg rolls are good, strawberry shake and avocado shakes are BUH-OMB and pho is hit or miss. Grilled pork rice plates and vermicelli are pretty standard.
Side note: This spot is definitely better than their Madison and Broadway locations.Listed in: PHO-CK YEAH!

It was past midnight on saturday and I was starving. Saw this place was open till 3am, close to where I live, and I was down! My friend tagged along with me. I wanna say this use to be an old tacky Denny's before being turned into a vietnamese restuarant. But I didn't really care about that. Pretty decent amount of ppl coming in for this time of night. Lots of yummy things on the menu.....I almost got the Pho, but I ended up getting the #52 which was a noodle bowl with pork, shrimp and spring rolls. YUM!! My friend, for some reason, only ordered fried wontons and a beer. The kid server didn't even card him which I thought was funny, he's 25, but I'm just so use to everyone carding us. Employers were quick and polite. Anyways, we both enjoyed our food very much~ Freshly made and delicious and large portions. Pretty inexpensive too as my food was like $7or 8 and his was $3 or 4. We also got hot tea which smelt and tasted like jasmine. Overall, Pho Bac Hoa Viet will def be a go to place.

What can I say about Hoa Viet restaurant..... I really like the food there, I really do. Also, the prices are very reasonable.
However, the service there has much room for improvment!!! The servers don't even smile at all through the entire process of serving a meal, you just don't feel any friendliness. We ordered an appetizer, and it came with the main course, which defeats the purpose of ordering an appetizer. Our server only came to the table twice after taking our order, once to drop off food, and another time to drop off the bill.
I wish that the service were a little more attentive and friendly. I do not expect full conversations with a server, but to feel welcome. I do not know the tip system they have there, but if all servers divvy up the collected tips, this might be a disincentive for the servers to make much of an effort with his or her own tables.
Whether that's the case or not, I hope management sees this review and can make some positive changes in the service. The restaurant has a lot of potential. I usually give a 20%+ tip, having been a server a in the past myself, but this time I had to leave 10% because the service was slow, disorganized, and unfriendly. -

Service WAS HORRIBLE, HOLY S&*( on a Wed night I waited 18 mins to get my check and that was after I started timing. The service prior during and at the end was horrible, horrible. I guess a Caucasian in an ASIAN restaurant is RARE so maybe they DIDN'T know I DIDN'T want to be there allllllll night!! HELLO, I was even eating alone.
The food wasn't that bad, if I order again it would be take out not dine in.
There soup with everything in it was quite tasty. -

This place lacks consistency and sometimes the service just straight up annoys the hell out of me. Don't put down a category on your menu called "appetizers" if you are just going to plop the appetizer down at the same time as the entrees.... WHAT'S THE POINT?!
I finally tried the milk shakes here and they are frickin fabulous! I highly suggest the Strawberry shake with tapioca pearls or the Jackfruit if you're in the mood for something more citrus-e.
I'll continue to love the grilled beef, but this place needs major adjustments before they will deserve more stars.1 Previous Review: Show all »

THiS PLACE iS H0RRiBLE!!!
The waitress we had today, DOES NOT LISTEN TO YOU/IS OBLIVIOUS (a little heavy set & wears glasses). I told her we needed a table for 8, she brings us 6 glasses of water? I didn't know 6 = 8? Also, we asked for extra dishes/plates, she forgot them. They are also cheap about giving the soup spoons even though we ordered pho? We also told her SPECIFICALLY we do not want the dishes to be spicy & she said no problem, she'll take care of it. She ended up not taking care of it. The reason why we were being nit picky about the dishes being spicy is because we had 2 children & kids are not happy when they are not being fed/cannot eat when they are starving.
Last but not least, their bathroom is DISGUSTING! They had crap & pee all over the floor & it is out of service? SO GROSS! My fault, I should have just told everyone to leave after I saw this when I wanted to just wash my hands before we ate -_____-
NEVER AGAIN will we ever go back to this place! That's a promise! -
Review from Sunny L.
This is the only pho restaraunt near my my work place that i know of that has decent pho. I come here from time to time with my coworkers and they say its also decent. The pricing of the items are good which is wonderful for my almost empty wallet. I would normally get pho or vermacelli; the other things i would skip. Generally, those two items are consistently good/decent. The service is haste with things and responsive but not up to par with other restaurants. Also, the PHO CHALLENGE is scary to me... who would want to do that? well, that's just me... hahah. THis place is recommended to try but i wouldn't come here if its out of your way.
Pros: HOURS, Price
Cons: Food is just decent. Decor.

Don't listen to these guys, and don't listen to the girl that's talking crap about the bathrooms. You're not going here to eat in the bathrooms. Use the bathroom at home. Every single public bathroom is unsanitary. You're going here for great tasting Pho and SUPERB tasting Egg Rolls, oh and possibly the BEST Chow Fun, ever. The service is decent, hence the 4 Stars. The food is...well.. Let's just say pure awesomeness!

This is the dirtiest Pho Bac Hoa Viet I have ever been to.
And it is AMAZING.
Yes, it's dirty and I've heard the worst stories about the kitchens here from my Vietnamese friends.... but you know what? I'm risking food poisoning with any kind of Pho so mind as well go somewhere decent and close. I know it's ridiculous but I love the fried rice and chow fun here. They make it HOT and it's always well cooked as well as being plentiful in portion. The employees are blah, the service is blah but just for location and price and deliciousness it gets a four star even while being one of the dirtiest places I frequent.

You can't beat the quality and the tastiness for such a low cost! My friend and I had their sprout salad (mine I added lemon, chile sauce, and soy sauce)... fantastic! It's served with fresh sprigs of basil :)
Next, I ordered the Pho soup, with the Tripe, Beef, and Beef Ball added. It was my first experience with the tripe, and I have to say, I thought it was exciting to be trying something so unique, a far cry from the meat I normally eat, but I wasn't a fan of the texture. I think its just an acquired taste. I really thought the beef was delicious, and same with the beef ball. All the ingredients tasted fresh and thats one thing I just love about Pho.
I really like all the condiments at the table, it really allows you to customize your soup. We had (to choose from) chile sauce, marinated crushed red pepper, jalepeno slices, soy sauce, salt, and pepper. Plus there was left over basil, and lemon from our salad.
I also had the egg rolls with the dipping sauce, perfect for splitting with two people! The meal was very cheap and the serving was way larger than I could finish at once. I was more engulfed in my company so I didnt pay much attention to the service. The service was just standard, nothing above and beyond but also not below par. The restaurant seemed large inside, so no one was squished together, and they had large televisions in both corners (good if there is a game on tv, tonight was basketball).
Delicious! I WILL be back :) -

First - I'm not "savvy" when it comes to writing reviews for Vietnamese food. However, plenty of my Viet friends love this spot.
Recommendations: Pho, duh! Also, I like the house special if you're not brave enough (or know what Pho is). It's a combination of veggies, baby corn, and chicken over steamed rice. In fact, writing and thinking about this makes me want to have some this week!
Some perks:
** Open late, service is always quick - but you may need to run your check up to the front to pay for your meal.
** Online delivery, I believe you can order your meals online and have them avail for pick-up and/or delivery. -
Review from Ricky N.
Seriously, not the best Pho I've ever had... nothing to die for or cry over.
However, their hours are great (Weekends open until 3am) One of the bests place to go to after a night out from the club, bar, party or rave... whatever you're into. Why stuff your mouth with greasy fast food or mediocre crap when you can have "semi-authentic" Vietnamese Food. It's fulfilling and worth your $7 dollars or so.
I ordered the Com Thit Nuong (Rice plate with Grilled Pork) and it came out fairly quick, it was a great portion size and the meat was very tender and savory. It came with the normal sliced tomatos and lettuce leaves to dip with your fish sauce. And a side of broth to wash it all down. It wasn't bad and didn't have too many complaints.
BEWARE: You may encounter drunk people late at night, you may even be one of them...Listed in: Best of Rancho Cordova

This is a favorite spot of mine, the first place I ever had Pho, and my go to place for those yummy and delicious noodles. It doesn't get much better than this on a cold winter night.

I come here about once a week and I have a dreadful experience every time. So why do I come here? Well, there's not many other Vietnamese noodle houses close by and I'm so close to this dump..
The staff are nice people, just too bad their service really really sucks. Out of all the times I've been here, They've either messed up mine or my girlfriend's order which is starting to really annoy me.
I don't know if it's every noodle house that I go to, but don't they understand the concept that when you order an appetizer you want your appetizer before your entree?
There was a time when my girlfriend ordered Thai tea and it never came. Once we got our bill, there was the Thai tea we never got. The waitress had the nerve to ask if we still wanted it when we came up to pay..
These clowns are so lucky I love pho.. I wish they would get it right.. Sad to say, I will be coming back here...1 Previous Review: Show all »

Stockton, CA
Me and a couple of friends decided to eat here one night (before heading out to Gold Club Centerfolds, BWHAHHAHAHAHA!!), and the food was awesome!! Delicious!! I know I have to cut down on carbs, but they have rice definitely to fill you up.
This place, also has a PHO challenge, which I probably will do, on a very empty stomach in the morning. It's a big ass bowl to feed like a friggin family, and you have one hour to finish and if you do finish in an hour or less, it's free and you get a t-shirt. If you don't finish, you pay $20+
Anywhoozle, I opted for the regular meals. And guess what they have like these fruity drinks, with the option of adding.. PEARLS!! Extra 75 cents but its worth it if you're a pearl freak.
For the meal, I forgot what its called that I ordered but it was a pretty good combo of a side of rice, pork slices, a small kabob of three shrimps bbq'd, fish cake with a scrambled egg top layer, side of salad, and a side of soup and salad dressing. That hit the spot! and prices are reasonable.
And for the drink, well actually theres the water, but the treat drink was like some tri-fruit thing with blended ice, with some berries, some green shtuff andsome other stuff.. kinda like almost the filipino halo halo but different, yet I added pearls, and it was ok. It was more like a treatful snowcone than a straight drink... well actually duhh I spooned it.. nevermind..
Like I said, deeeeelishus!!!!! As far as service, they are good waiters and so forth. We did ask in the beginning to split the cheques, but they didn't, but we asked them again and actually split it. That's pretty much it.
But, food is beyond amazing for me... just PHO'ing tasty.. motherPHO'ing hits the spot.. -
Review from Cindy K.
The pho challenge here does not compare to the one in SF, but I'll get to that in a bit. We had reservations here, yah believe it or not this place took reservations. Well the place wasn't packed so they ended up just putting 2 round tables together, which is pretty ghetto.
Only 1 person in our group was brave enough to take on the "Pho King". The bowl s huge and our friend didn't finish. The consolation prize was a poster. At Pho Gardens you get a t-shirt. They even have a wall of pictures of people who failed. Why would you do that? It makes people NOT want to try.
Anyways, I ordered some Mi Xa Xiu - bbq port noodl soup. OMG, the bowl is huge but my food portion was small. I finished eating in like 5 minutes and was still freaking hungry. It tasted good though but the amount of food was depressing. Then I ordered some 3 color drink. It was alright, but there was way too much coconut milk in it. I felt like I was going to get a heart attack.
I am not coming here again.
