Review from Jose O.
The only knock against this place is the price. The food here is exquisite! I just had the #33 which the menu describes as "chicken sauté w/ black mushrooms, clear vermicelli, onions, curry spices & coconut milk." I describe it as pretty damn tasty mix of stuff in a curry sauce. I found myself savoring slowly the delicious curry sauce and chicken bites while I slowly added in the white rice that comes with the dish. The bonus is that the dish is usually a pretty substantial size so it's good for sharing or splitting into 2 meals.
I've also had the #38 which is a vegetable curry and I add tofu, and that is equally delicious. I'll probably go back and try the pho and the bun next time. Argh! Just wish it was cheaper. -

What I ate: Hu Tieu Rau Cai
Visit date: September 28, 2011
First time? No.
The only thing I ever ordered here was the Pho Ga -- they give a hearty portion of chicken, and the beef broth is rich and comforting. Until today...when I got brave. My last few times here I was hesitant to try something new; I'm a big fan of the Pho Ga so I didn't want to be disappointed if I got something else and didn't like it as much. Today, I got the Hu Tieu Rau Cai which has all kinds of yummies: broccoli, mushrooms, zucchini, green beans, iceberg lettuce, bean sprouts, & soft tofu w/ rice noodles. I was very pleased. The broth is not as rich and full as the pho broth, but still comforting and delicious.
Pho 84 is consistently good. They have an elegant decor and pretty paintings. The service is great! Note: it gets busy during the business week lunch hour (12n-1p) so it's best to keep your group small at that time. -

The food was really good...but way overpriced. I am unsure how such simple food can be so expensive (because people will pay for it, I know). We went for dinner and the place was somewhat populated, but quiet...dead quiet. No music, no talking. It was eerie. The servers might not be Vietnamese...who cares? I don't think hiring practices can be based on race/ethnicity anyway.

First of all I am not sure why this place is called PHO...because they do not serve authentic Vietnamese food. So if you want authentic Vietnamese food...don't go here.
Next, this place used to be a good place to get decent food at a reasonable price. I lived in Oakland for 6 years right down the street from this place. I went here all the time. But now...the portions all smaller, way more expensive, and the service sucks! For example, my favorite was the chicken with mushrooms, zucchini, blue lake beans in a tomato sauce. This dish for lunch was $7.95 and dinner $10.95. NOW they have jacked up their prices to lunch $13 and dinner $16.
The service? yesterday co-workers and me went for lunch (3 of us total). My one co-worker got his food 20 minutes before the rest of us. By the time we got our food he was nearly done eating.
This place would have been better if it didn't try being so fancy and just simply focus on service and good food. Another ruined place to eat. -

The place is okay. Not an authenic Vietnamese restaurant. I want my boyfriend to try his first Vietnamese restaurant yet the imperial rolls weren't as good as the ones I brought home from other places; you can only taste the onions! Food was pricey compared to most Vietnamese places. We did not feel welcomed and THE WORKERS HERE ARENT EVEN VIETNAMESE! I spoke in Vietnamese to the waitress and she didn't understand a word! Food was okay.. I'm sitting here writing this review.. In the restaurant. I told my boyfriend we should have drove to another city to eat pho!

I'm going to have to split this in to two reviews, the food and the place/service.
The Food: 5 stars
Been here a few times now and had a few dishes. Without getting overly specific, this place has just amazing food. Seriously, it would be a 5 stars on food alone. The #18 I had the other day was chicken/beef/pork all over special rice with sauce. I was in absolute flavor heaven. The imperial rolls were divine as well. I've also had a few other chicken dishes here before(lemongrass, ginger, and another i can't remember) that were equally well done. I see people call it pricey but i do feel the price is reflected in the quality you get here.
The Service/Environment: 2 stars
I should start by saying they are friendly. That said dinning here can be quite flawed.
For one, they cram absolutely as many tables as possible, especially in the back, which can be unnerving/uncomfortable. The acoustics are also quite awful. Last time i went there my party of 3 was seated in the middle of the mess of tables and we practically had to yell at each other to have a conversation.
Do not expect anything quickly here. Last time we went in, it took quite a while to have our order taken, about 15 minutes for the imperial rolls to show up, and what i think was seriously 40 minutes or so for the entrees to show up. They were not cold and did not disappoint but that's awfully slow.
They suggest on the website that you can call ahead for reservations. I tried to do so for about 20 minutes about an hour before we were hoping to come in. I got a busy signal the first 8 tries or so and then got put on hold for 5 minutes only to be hung up on. Next time i actually spoke to somebody who said they couldn't guarantee us a table but would put us on the list for 7pm(it was 6:25 by this time). When we showed up we were on no list, so i told them i had called for a reservation and they said to me(without further inquiry) "we don't take reservations within 30 minutes". Ugh, for one i started calling an hour earlier and for two they told me on the phone they were taking my name down. Didn't matter much as I was seated within 5 minutes but it was frustrating.
A couple more nit picks. My girlfriend found a strange piece of green plastic/paper in her water. She also found a hair in her food. She was also serve a room temperature Pellegrino water(wtf). One of these could easily be written off as a little mistake but to have all 3 in one sitting is a little disturbing.
I will definitely be back to Pho 84 and hope to upgrade their rating. I won't likely try a friday or saturday night again and will hopefully have a better overall experience. -

Oh wow. I really used to enjoy this place but today...
I wanted to put 2.5 stars but this is me being nice...
I ordered some takeout for dinner from the online menu for me and my bf, we ordered the #19 & 39. I ordered the same thing from huynh 2 weeks ago for lunch and was really craving it but huynh is only open for lunch so we went with pho 84.
My bf's #39 smelled like soap and he said its wayyyy better at nguyen but after he added some stuff from home he said it was tolerable.
Mine was supposed to come with 2 imperial rolls but the website hasn't been updated to the new menu so it only comes with one now. My chicken was burnt and not as tasty as usual. When I called in all the person who answered could offer me was "we'll do better next time"...I have worked at restaurants before and I have had way better service when calling in something that wasn't up to par.
Their "Vietnamese iced tea" was not good and it has a weird bitter after taste.
If i ever need Vietnamese for dinner I may go back but I wont order takeout there anymore. Im not about to pay for burnt chicken and soapy shrimp/green beans again. -

Stopped in here for an impromptu 'elopement' dinner with a party of seven...
They rearranged some tables to accommodate our group as quickly as was feasible; the wait staff was prompt, friendly, and very helpful (as two of our party were unfamiliar with pho); they placed OUR bottle of champagne in their cooler, and later served it in frosted champagne flutes (theirs) for no extra charge; and best of all, the food was excellent!
I hadn't been to Pho 84 since before their cosmetic changes a year or two ago, but it really worked out nicely for us! I look forward to our next visit. -

My wife and I love this place. As others have said, their food is awesome, but also it comes in big portions. One of the big soups is usually enough for two, which negates the slightly high prices.

Haven't been here in so long, but went this week with some co-workers for lunch since they were taking me for my farewell from my job... and man... I'm kinda sad!
I'm taking away one star from this place cause they have since skimped on the imperial rolls here. Normally when you order a rice combo plate or the vermicelli bowl, they used to give out two of their famous rolls, now it's been reduced to one. BOO!!!
Also, this is not a place for PHO, so if that's what you are looking for, go to Chinatown. This place is more known for their rice plates or vermicelli bowls and other dishes on the menu, but not PHO.
I still like the food here and the people are really nice, but come on now...don't skimp on the food, keep it original!1 Previous Review: Show all »

You're wandering aimlessly downtown, dangerously close to nearby restaurant's closing time, when ah! just there in the distance is Pho 84. Despite the name, you won't find a vast selection of pho. If memory serves me right, there's the beef pho with all the usual trimmings, pho ga (chicken noodle soup), a veggie version (although it's got a chicken and seafood broth) and finally another that I think is seafood based.
So, if you're going strictly for pho, you might want to try your luck elsewhere. Entrees range from vermicelli to rice to stir fry like foodstuffs. Opting for the beef with varied veggies, I found a generous serving, friendly service and added bonus for serving wine and beer.
Better than average, certainly cleaner than average, but in agreement with most, grossly overpriced.Listed in: East Bay Eats, Bay Area Pho

My family goes here sometimes once a week and the food is always great. We typically get take out and they try to serve you your food fast. As a local who has been going here for years the food is always consistently good. When we have out of towners we get take out from here and everyone loves it.
My only complaint is we have been going here for a few years and it feels like the prices have gone up a bit. At first I felt like I was getting excellent and reasonably priced take out and now it is a bit more expensive. -

DO NOT GO HERE FOR THE PHO! Go for the Curry Catfish.
Why am I giving a restaurant with pho in the name 4 stars and telling you to avoid the pho?
This place has awesome curry catfish, shrimp spring rolls with scrumptious homemade peanut sauce, and a delish shrimp and eggplant dish.
Order said dishes and Enjoy. -

I don't understand why everyone thinks the pho is here is so great. I had it and I just thought it was okay.
My friend and I came here on a Friday night around 8 pm, and this place was busy! A little noisy, but it seems like a classy place to take your date. Very cozy little place.
Service took a little while, but I expect that it was because it was so busy. We both ordered the pho bo and waited about 20 minutes before it came out. The broth was okay, nothing to write home about. The quality of the beef was great. Lots of beef in the pho bo. I ended up with something that looked like cartilage in my pho, so I just ate around it. I couldn't have eaten it anyways due to the fact that I had two root canals earlier that day.
It took a little longer than we would have liked to get our check, even though the place had cleared out.
The pho was okay, the quality was great, the service was busy. I think next time I'll go some place else for pho. -

Came here for lunch and got some pho. Went back recently to get dinner with the family. and got some vermicelli. It was spectacular, the warm spicy beef salad was great also. Everything that my family got was also exceptional. Pho 84 will be a place that we will go to regularly now. Not so many pho options so if your looking for that, then you may need to go else where.

Pho 84 is a good place to go if you can't decide between staying home and going out. If your fridge is empty and you're tired of take out, Pho 84 is a welcome alternative. Great food, good tea, and a no nonsense atmosphere.
I strongly disagree with all of the yelpers who call this place expensive. Its good food and portions for the price. However, they are right in that the service leaves something to be desired.
It is important for locals to support this place, if they want to see anywhere in the Downtown or Lake area open past 4pm! -

Oakland, CA
I walk by this place every day on my way to work and finally had a chance to stop in for dinner. The atmosphere is classy, but casual. The service was good, almost a little too fast-they brought our entree before we even finished our apps!
It's been three weeks and I forget what I ordered...my boyfriend and I both got Vietnamese ice teas, which I assumed to be like Thai ice tea, which it was-just not as delicious. We got the tofu rolls for an app, which were okay, but the peanut sauce that came with them was amazing and reminded me of my favorite Vietnamese place back East. We both got a veg noodle entree that was good (the veggies in it were really good and seemed really fresh) and a pretty large portion, but nothing I can't live without.
This seems like a great first date place, trendy but casual with pretty good pricey food. I can see someday stopping back to get the tofu wrap to go. -

Pho 84, or Pho Eighty Pho as I like to call it, is ok. Didn't blow my mind, but I will definitely go back.
My hella fine date suggested the place and I'm glad she did. I actually liked the little neighborhood. It's a little tree-lined street with other small restaurants, coffee shops, stores, etc. Easy parking. And I didn't find the restaurant all that small. It seems to fit the neighborhood just fine.
I ordered the prawns and imperial rolls over the special rice. The special rice? Not so much. It was bland. The imperial rolls are tasty and I would order again, but I think next time I want to try the spring rolls. The prawns were large, cooked perfectly and were fantastic. I was sad because there were only 4 of them. My date is vegetarian and she had tofu cooked in a garlic, spicy sauce and vermicelli noodles. Overall, it had more flavor than most of my meal. We split a jack fruit shake, which nether of us has ever had, but it was the highlight of the meal and we made our apologies as we swirled the straws in the bottom of the glass to slurp up every bit of jack fruit!
The wait staff is indeed rude. But they get bonus points for letting us sit and chat well after our meal. So long that the doors were locked and they, the wait staff, were all seated at a table behind us enjoying their after work meals! -

Pricey...but when the food comes out...they don't Skimp....
For example:
$7 spring rolls - the biggest over stuffed spring roll I've ever eaten. The shrimps aren't sliced in half either. It kinda felt awkward trying to fit my mouth over such a big roll...lol
$9 Small bowl of Pho - pricey yes, but there was more beef in it than I'd really like....Meat lovers would be content...
$12 Pork over rice - It's about 2 times the portion at other pho restaruants, you get about 4-5 slices of pork....Obesity to follow...
It's aiight~ Wouldn't come again though. *shrugs*
PS. they do wrap their utensils tightly in napkins which is kinda nice, neat, and different. Feel bad for the person in the back rolling these things up though...haha -

HORRIBLE. Not authentic. Disgusting.
I ordered Hu Tieu and it comes with PHO noodles. 4 small pieces of chicken, 3 shrimp and lettuce in the bowl
If you're Vietnamese or likes authentic Vietnamese do NOT go here. $11 for a bowl of crap soup is UNhEARD of. I've never been so disappointed and I usually love a lot of places. -

Oakland, CA
I wouldn't go so far as to call their food disgusting...but I would venture to describe it as overpriced, disappointing, unimpressive...sigh...
The only saving graces of Pho 84 are 1) fast, friendly service and 2) well-decorated interior, and 3) open late. Sometimes it's nice to walk into a Vietnamese restaurant and not have to deal with cockroaches / non-English speaking waiters/ cleaning your spoon/chopsticks carefully with a napkin!
BUT
I'd never sacrifice good food for good service. NEVER! BLASPHEMY!
Ordered:
Pho Dac Biet - $10 - bland, good noodle consistency
Canh Chua - $12 - bowl wayyyy too small for price, good assortment of vegetables
Their prices for pho are, quite frankly, offensive. Look around...you're in Oakland! -

Deeply mediocre, especially for the price. $14 for plates, really? The spring rolls were gummy and full of dry rice noodles without much else. The service was fine, but the place has all the atmosphere of a badly decorated dentist's office.
As other reviews say, hardly any pho on the menu. -

Some good noodle dishes and decent Pho, but nothing to write home about!

Review from Martin W.
Oakland, CA
Pho 84 is a magnificently contradictory, even schizophrenic, eatery.
In a good way
Martin W loves ritual--ceremony, if you will.
Not quite as much as he loves speaking of himself in the third person, mind you, but his affection for prescribed and intricate rites is nonetheless noteworthy.
But enough about me--let's talk about this fine restaurant! I noticed my brief (by my standards) previous review and decided Pho 84 needed an update.
Now, by "fine," I do not mean "fine dining." Pho 84 is located storefronts down from a tattoo parlor, dollar shop, "beauty products" store, and hoagie shop. The interior is cramped and the doors open to a "Please Wait to be Seated" sign whose origins must be a Denny's somewhere out in the world.
However, Martin W has little interest in distressed brass fixtures and vaulted ceilings of rich mahogany--that's just so much cosmetic bullshit used to inflate the price of the food and drinks (which I, personally, believe to be the raison d'être of places which SERVE FOOD AND DRINK!! Jesus.
Pho 84 does precisely what I like in a restaurant--it delivers excellent food, in a broad (and deep) range of flavors and ingredients.
I love the Du H Xào Cà Nâu (eggplant & tofu in plum sauce)--not a drop of meatstuff, and Martin W likes it? Take note, kids--when Martin W doesn't bemoan the absence of flesh in a dish, then that's a goddamn good dish.
Last time in, I had the Gà Ng V Hng (baked chicken breast in 5-spice sauce)--fantastic, lightly flavored, and fucking ENORMOUS serving. I packed some to go. Again, take note kids--when Martin W can't finish his meal, that's whatcha call a BIG fucking meal.
And their "special" rice. Man, I could eat a trough of that shit. It's just rice w/chicken broth, onions, and garlic, but they do it like nobody else does. Or maybe even can. Always, ALWAYS get a side of it at dinner, or pick a dish that comes with it for lunch.
Finally, remember my mumbo jumbo about ritual and ceremony? I love it. I did not drink a drop of my absinthe until I had acquired the appropriate accoutrement (spoon, glass pot, stemmed glass). Ritual invites tradition to the table and adds the weight of history to any process.
And Pho 84 is the only Vietnamese restaurant *I've* ever been to which serves their coffee in an ultra-fine grind, with a slow (10-minute) drop. It's a delightful way to build anticipation and involve one's self in the meal; I absolutely love it. To fucking death.
Pho 84. It's the go-to spot for Vietnamese food in Oakland, bar none. Michelle S, I love you to bits, but your 3-star review is a travesty. A travesty (granted, I've never actually had their pho, but Betty H swears by it and she's not a crackhead). Mike Z's got it right.
If there's any kind of flaw with Pho 84, it's the absence of hard liquor.
I forgive them.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Prices are a bit high, but the food is always great.
Oh, and by the way. For folks posting negative reviews based on the lack of 84 selections of pho, please go back and do some homework. The number 84 does not stand for the number of selections of pho, it is in the name either because it has some significance to the owners, or because it is a lucky number. Please stop trashing a good restaurant based on misinformation. -

Agree with most of the other reviews - good food but expensive. I suppose we're paying a bit more for slightly better ambiance and accoutrement, but I expected a much bigger bowl of pho with much more meaty goodness for $10.
The #13 (2 imperial rolls and pork over rice vermicelli) was really good. $14 good? I'm not so sure, but it's a nicely put together plate, with the perfect amount of each component. The imperial rolls are not as good as everyone says - it was actually a bit too Chinese-y, with veggies and glass noodles. I like my Vietnamese rolls to be pure, unadulterated pork and shrimp. Everything was quite tasty though.
I, along with everyone else in the restaurant, was heading to see Goldfrapp afterwards. You could tell by the sequins and feathers ;) It worked out great as they had us out of there with a quickness and with money leftover to buy drinks at the concert. The walk between venues is an eclectic one - filled with Oaksterdam loiterers, old school barbershops, and local flavor. If you can stand this, Pho 84 makes a great pre-Fox meal. -

We had dinner here after the show (revels) at the Scottish center. If you have a party more than 4 it may be awkward seating you, seeing as how they don't have any circular tables. The place is very nice and the atmosphere is perfect for a date - the paintings and the lighting at night give off a soothing vibe, but if you are strapped for cash this probably isn't the place for you.
The food was good, and the portions were sizable, but I don't know if I would go here money was an issue. Luckily for me, someone else foot the bill, but it was something I considered while I was ordering my food. The staff was nice, and the food arrived in a timely manner, but I can't get over the price for Pho and drinks.
Give it a shot - everyone is different - your experience might be better than mine, but it was just OK. Good luck finding parking. -
Review from Jeanne L.
3.5 stars.
I admit this place is good but its wayyyy over priced for vietnamese food.
$13.50 for a single rice plate is about the average here. I ordered a combination rice place that included bbq chicken, grilled prawns and an imperial roll on top of special rice and salad. It was definately a good amount of food but not for $17 when I can get the same rice place for half that price elsewhere. Yummy but not worth it. -

"For a place to be called Pho 84, I would expect a lot of different variations of Pho..." but there wasn't. in fact I think there are only six kinds.
But that is totally her issue not mine! What I ordered (sauteed vegetables w/ garlic noodles) was soooooo good. The veggies were cooked perfectly and I actually tasted garlic - a surprise to be honest. I went out on a limb and it totally paid off. Ill order this every time.
The only bad part was that I could not finish the plate due to the fact that I had two teeth pulled the day before. Too be quite honest, I probably shouldn't of ordered the plate in the first place. But I did and I am glad, (pain not so much). -

I love me some good pho that is close to Berkeley. It's pretty hard to find.
I went here on a Wednesday evening with a friend, and the place was packed around 6:45pm. We ordered the appetizer shrimp rolls and they were pretty decent (in size and taste). We both got the Beef Pho and it was quite fulfilling. It was pretty good pho in my opinion.
Drawbacks are: price and wait time. But to be fair, the ambiance was very nice. -

After reading about Pho 84 in 7x7s email list about places to eat at before a concert at the Fox in Oakland, we did exactly that before seeing the Silversun Pickups. Pho 84 is just a few blocks from the Fox and you walk by some pretty cool architecture buildings in downtown Oakland. The service was very fast and friendly. We didn't have a lot of time to eat but we got in and out of there in about 45 minutes which perfect. The two soups we had were both delicious but if you're not that hungry go for the smaller bowl as the large bowl is pretty large.
Great place Pho very close to downtown Oakland. -

San Francisco, CA
The food here was okay but not a place where I HAVE to go eat at. The food is a little bit bland and for the price I pay for a pho...SO NOT WORTH IT. For the $9 they charge for a pho is ridiculous. Most pho's EVERYWHERE runs on average $6-7. This place is a utter rip off. This place is merely taking advantage of the fact that is is near high rise office buildings and the Kaiser Regional offices. If you really want some pho, save some money and head down the block to Mama's on 19th St. and Webster. It's cheaper and much better tasting.

One word: onolicious! (In other words, soooo good!)
I don't know why we don't come here more often! Today I got my favorite, #35 chicken and seasonal eggplant in spicy fish sauce.
For $11.00 I thought I got my money's worth because that plate alone was enough to feed two people! And my dish was packed full of flavor. (FYI: you also have the option of choosing beef.)
The wait wasn't too bad, however if you do decide to come here for lunch I do suggest you get here around 11:30 to beat the lunch rush. The prices aren't too bad either considering the portions are more than enough.
