i was here for a late lunch the other day in a party of four... two of us got the standard pho, which was good with plenty of meats, though slightly sparse on the tendon unfortunately. friend's mom got the soup with pineapple in it. it was spicy and tasty. and then friend got this chicken and spinach dish which was uh-mazing. super delish.
you can barely spot this place from the outside, it seems like a hole in the wall, but it's nice inside with some great art. if i were to come again, i'd go for the entrees and skip the soup, despite their name.
I wasn't overly impressed the first time, but I thought it warranted a second try. Well, sad to report that my initial impressions were spot on.
Hubby had the #1 Pho Dac Biet. $8 for the "regular" order and the bowl was maybe 2/3rds the size of a standard Pho bowl. Lots of noodles, but they were mushy and too plentiful, throwing off the ratio of noodles to broth. One of the best parts of Pho is slurping the wonderful and fragrant broth....not here apparently. Their condiment tray of basil, lemon, and bean sprouts were crammed into a vessel the exact size of a soy sauce dish. Wow, really?
I had #12. A plate of tasty grilled pork with vermicelli noodles served with a side of small segmented iceberg lettuce leaves and fish sauce. When the slices of pork are larger than the lettuce leaves, it makes for awkward eating. I ended up just eating the pork and noodles with the lettuce acting as a salad.
Bottom line......overpriced, small portions, and uninspiring food. Go to Binh Minh Quan for a less expensive and a much tastier meal!
Are they making my noodles back there?
Not the fastest of pho joints but good none the less. Small and beautiful interior and an even more beautiful hostess (good lawrd)!! A little pricey for pho but that's what happens when you eat downtown. Portions and toppings are a little less than what I'm use to, but in the end it seemed to be enough. The Broth is solid but not much in the way of meat. If you're in the area and in the mood. If not for the food... at least the view. Hit this place up pho sho!
Thursday night show at the Fox and in need of something yummy for dinner. One of our show companions suggested Pho 84, none of us had been but saw the reviews on yelp so decided to give it a try.
First, the decor is lovely and clean, point for that.
Second point for the service: they were very friendly though it took some time for them to realize that we wanted to order an appetizer and that was only after I almost had to grab one of the waitress as she went flying by. I don't fault them too much for this as we had arrived before our companions and we were sitting at a half empty table...perhaps the waitresses thought we wanted to wait till everyone was there, no biggie.
Third point for the quality of the chicken & prawns in my pho. They were really tasty, as was the broth but the noodles were only meh. The spring rolls were okay but the vermicelli noodles were mushy, not mind blowingly good.
Bottom line: I'd go back and try something else next time we're up for a show. Otherwise, wouldn't drive out of my way to eat there.

I went to Pho 84 becuase it was close to the Fox Theater and had good reviews. It was packed. Not suprising on a friday night, but still a lot fuler than surrounding restaurants. Packed is a good sign. My friend and i opted to get carryout. My Tom Sate (shrimp with green onions in a spice brown sauce) was done in less than 10 minutes. It was a generous portion that was wonderfully seasoned. I had to add a side of rice to complement my meal, but that was no big deal. My friend's chicken dish (mild with lots of vegetables) was also a winner. I definitely want to go back and try more things.
Thank you, local Pacific Asian restaurant with a vegetarian sub-menu free of dishes bathed in chicken stock, fish sauce, or beef broth (I know it is free of said comestibles, because this food would wreak havoc on my fragile hippie GI tract if it wasn't).
I can only attest to the quality of the 8-10 items I can actually eat here, but those few options are really good. I love the eggplant dish.
On the down side, it's true that it's a little spendy, and the crowds make it really unpleasant to be here between 11:30 and 1:30.
$12 for a bowl of pho? You've gota be kidding me. PLUS, you don't even get all the essential "seasonings" to fix up your meal. You have to have the siracha, the hoisin sauce, fish sauce, chili oil..etc etc..but here...
I got the rice noodle pattie plate...it was all good...pretty presentation...but i don't go to a local vietnamese spot for pretty presentation...the plate lunch was like $10+....
I'm so used to the same food for $3-$5 less...I wouldn't go back here unless my coworker insists on going and insists on paying for me.
If you want cheaper and good vietnamese, go to Mama's on 19th. But like Pho 84, this spot gets crowded by noon...so go early.
I would've given this place a 4, but service was just horrible.
I came here for lunch with a few of my co-workers since Claudia was in the mood for Vietnamese. We decided to come earlier because this place gets crazy busy during lunch. Sometimes, you have to wait 30 mins. just to get a table. Anyhow, I ordered the #20 (I don't know the name - it's in Vietnamese) which came with Salad, Imperial Roll, 3 Grilled Prawns with choice of Grilled Marinated Beef, Pork or Chicken over Special Rice. I got the chicken. The food was a spicy dish but the spiciness didn't over power the chicken so that was great. The imperial roll and prawns were really good and I wouldn't mind eating more of those. There were a lot of rice so it was filling. But I didn't care too much for the salad; there was too much pepper for some reason.
Now for the bad service...
1. 15% gratuity for 5 or more people. WTHeck?!? Most places is 6 or more. The lady said it's always been their policy.
2. They took forever to give one of my co-workers' food and you would think it'd be the first one out. He got a Vermicelli dish. He had to wait 10-15 mins. after the first person got his food.
3. The lady was giving another co-worker ugly faces even though she didn't listen to my co-worker. It was like "if you didn't already finished eating, I would've spat on your food" look. He asked to get change for his $20 in all $5s but she came out with 2 $5s and 1 $10. He asked her change for his $10.
4. They wouldn't put the amount we wanted on our cards. They said "their system won't allow them." If you wanted to put $15 or $20 on a card, most places would allow you.
5. They want you out of there ASAP so they can sit more people. They'll give you the check when you're not finished eating. Sometimes, they'll give you the check ALONG with your food.
Honestly, I can tolerate crappy service for good food but I have a limit. Their food was good, but not that great so the food did not make up for the bad service. I don't know if I'll be back but I don't think this will be on my "regular lunch list."

I don't come here for the Pho.
I come here for the eggplant in plum sauce (#62 I believe)...which is: too good to be true.
That, some jasmine rice, some shared veggie rolls, and jasmine tea fulfill my Vietnamese craving for the week.
I've been here at least 20x's in the past 4 years. It's always a consistently good dinner date....however, slightly too pricey for regular outings.

I had lunch here recently with the lovely Betty H. (she swears by Pho 84, and I 100% trust her judgement). We got there early to beat the inevitably-crazy lunchtime rush, and had plenty of time to chat without the clatter of dishes and the buzz of business(wo)men around us.
Betty insisted we start with the chicken salad (breast meat, cabbage, pickled carrots, daikon, celery, cilantro, onions), and it was a totally solid choice. I loved the crunchy chunks of celery, and the dressing was flat-out delicious.
For my main dish, I opted for a basic vermicelli bowl with beef. It was tasty, filling, and I still got 2 meals out of it. Betty had the Pho Ga (pho with chicken), and let me sneak a spoonful of the broth. Totally excellent, and a very close second to my beloved Pho Ao Sen on International. I'll most likely be ordering this on my next visit.
Service was great - they seem to have the lunch rush worked out, which I can imagine is no small feat for a place as popular as Pho 84. I admit to having past thoughts that this place was probably all hype and no substance, but I'm a believer. Pho on!

Delicious, well-portioned Vietnamese food. The prices seem a bit higher, but only because they give you more.
Highly recommend the Vietnamese coffee, they bring the French press right to you table.
Had the shrimp rolls and pho. Both pretty mediocre. Shrimp rolls were not particularly fresh but alright. The pho was disappointing. The soup was lukewarm. Beef is not fresh and clearly has sat in the soup for a while.
Has the feel of a place that aspires to be more than a "just" a pho shop, i.e., clean, decent atmosphere, and more expensive than typical pho places. That would be great if their food is up to par, but both service and especially food falls short. Unless you work/live nearby it's not a place I would recommend.
I am so hungry
Oasis in a ghost town
Please feed me the pho

It took forever to find open restaurants in this neighborhood at 7pm on a Monday. Scalpers kept trying to sell me tickets, though I didn't know for what show. It turned out to for Tori Amos, whoever that is... I actually contemplated purchasing chips and soda from some random dude with a cooler on the street corner.
Then, I entered a dark street with four--count them FOUR--open restaurants! However, three had absolutely no customers and Pho 84 was cracking, so I did what any good, herd-minded human would do: I went into Pho 84 and I order Pho.
Despite my intense hunger, it was really only par for the course. There wasn't anything particularly special about it, and the prices are approximately 25-33% more than I'm accustomed to paying for this type of fare. Considering the situation, it was like a godsend, but if I ever find myself in the neighborhood with an appetite again, I'll get in my car and drive a few more miles.

This is a great lunch spot! The service is usually quick especially during the busy lunch hour. I love the #45 and the #35. MMMMM eggplant in a plum sauce...yummers! Their marinated chicken on a bed of spinach is off the hook! Of course I'm a sucker for Vietnamese iced coffee and it comes in the little distiller thingy. Sometimes it takes forever and I just want to drink it!! I was surprised when I came here for lunch the other day and asked for brown rice only to find out that they don't have brown rice. I was shocked! I guess I've never asked before and I was in the mood for some brown rice. No worries, the food is still really good!! It's a perfect blend of savory and spicy. I love a dish with some kick! I've tried various dishes in the last 3 years and they are always on point! I'm so glad I can just walk here from the office and enjoy a good lunch!

Let me start by saying that I've been eating here since it was on Alice St in the early 80's.I do not go here for the Pho,I go here for shrimp rolls, chicken salad, shrimp (with shell on)in their special sauce appetizer and lots of different main courses including stuffed squid, ginger chicken,#17 and their special rice ( a need to do a 12 step for that stuff!)and any of the xao lans.Their food is super delicious!!

Although it serves a similar menu as one, Pho 84 is not your typical pho restaurant. Aside from a smaller menu of the usual variety of noodles, it has an extended menu of traditional and some innovative dishes. The space is small but clean. The service is on par. The prices are slightly higher than most but it is justified for the cleaner space and better service. The late hours are a definite plus. It was open on a Sunday night while the all the other pho restaurants in the area were already closed.

Went here with the team last week for lunch.
Warning, get there early, like 11:30 am early for lunch on a Friday. The place gets packed really quick. We got here at 11:45 and waited over 30 mins for a table. Parking is also a pain, difficult to find with only a 1 hour time limit.
However, once we were seated, it was well worth it. Service is friendly, and the decor is neat. I ordered the #17 with beef over special rice and it was delicious. Portions are huge, tons of meat. Only complaint is that everyone's food came out separately, kind of annoying.
Highly recommend it and will return.

Just the thing to drown my sorrows in after an awful morning of work. If you cant hit the pub, come here. The Imperial rolls were just delicious, and big, a meal all by themselves, so try to share! But youll still want all your Pho soup, tho Im not a big fan of the tendon, and would have preferred a choice of just rare beef. Makes my nose run just thinking about it. The broth was nice and flavorful, and not hyper salty like some places try to get away with.
Service was just right, I was in and out and back to work well within my lunch hour. A little pricey, but when you see the quality of the food, you know its probably worth it.
Small place, and very crammed at lunch time-you WILL be sharing condiments and napkins with the table RIGHT next to you, (and all their conversation) but hey, that just adds to the charm, right?. Just what I needed.
pho 84 is a very small vietnameserestaurant that seems to have a devout following. (name withheld to shield the gullible). tables are tightly spaced and there are hand paintings of vietnamese life on the walls.
sampling:
-pho bo (8.00, 9.50)
broth was flavored by star anise , onions and msg? broth didn't taste beefy nor otherwise distiguished. i.e. average broth. though the bowl looks large, the contents were that of a med pho elsewhere. the bowl is concaved with a very large surface area and a very narrow base.
the beef ball was amazingly tender as was the plentiful sliced beef (tai).. the beef brisket and beef tendon (gan) was it's normal sinewy and stingy self.
leftovers:
-gummy mouth aftertaste. msg? (also drank lots of water and an still thirsty.
-pho seriously overpriced regarding smaller portions.
-clean, efficient service.
-metered parking.
-many items over vermicelli or rice. entree portions seem small . large potions of vermicelli and rice? the latter are very cheap.

I like coming to this place because unlike any of my relationships they are consistent, they don't pull problems out of left field and on the grander scheme of things the staff secretly cares about you.
My recommendation for this place is any of the vegetarian dishes, particularly the Tofu with pineapple and coconut sauce as well as the shrimp imperial rolls.
I come here often when I'm on a date with a girl who I don't want to surprise with something new. I know exactly what I'm getting when I order and I know that the meal will be very enjoyable.
I would give this place 4 stars where it not for the difficult parking and the fact they don't take reservations but on the whole I have never had a single problem dining here.
I like Vietnamese.
I like short waits.
When I went to lunch here today I got both. The lunch plate consisting of 4 large marinated prawns and 3 imperial rolls over "special rice" was just perfect. Since I'm new to the Oakland business set, I'm looking for a new rotation and this place will go in it.
The only thing the negative reviews get right is that Pho 84 is--ironically--not the place to go for Pho.
Otherwise, missing the mark.
This is a stellar Vietnamese restaurant whose menu has been streamlined to reflect the wants of their clientele, but they have not debased or "dumbed down" the recipes at all. And I don't give a shit if their "special rice" isn't traditional, that stuff is freaking delicious.
Their meats are consistently moist, with rich flavors, and their Imperial rolls use the rice wrappers (not egg roll wrappers, like a phony place would). Yes, their salad is boring--if you want a fancy salad, you picked the wrong culture.
And they're the only Vietnamese place I know of which does the coffee at your table, with the super concentrated drip over the glass with the condensed milk at the bottom, add water/ice to taste. I love food you're *supposed* to play with.
If white people want to eat Vietnamese food, more power to 'em, I say. As long as I don't hear "is that spicy?" when someone orders, then it's all good.
I ate at Pho 84 last night for the first time in years. I got a major case of food poisoning - my g/f had a milder case. She was concerned I might have to go to the hospital - I am much better today, although I am exhausted and food still scares me.
I'm not going back.

There's nothing like a good, spicy Vietnamese lunch to brighten your day. After eating a dish here, you will go back to your office numb with delight, wondering how long it will last. They have it all - noodles, curries, rice dishes. And if your spice tolerance is low, you can also order it mild. But it's not as fun.
Pho shizzle!
So, my mentor (aka "Yoda," aka "Dr. Urban Socialite," aka "P-Diddy.") took me here for lunch today. The benefit of being unemployed in Lake Merritt is that you're a stones throw away from the coolest scientist you know (besides me, that is) who works at the Kaiser Center! But enough about me...
My favorite part of lunch (besides the company) was when I ordered "Pho Ga" and the waitress responded back with, "chicken noodle soup." I don't know why that cracked me up...I at least tried to call it what it really is. Yoda just said, "# 25."
Those imperial rolls are addictive and are a must with anything you try. I like the Pho at Miss Saigon better though.

I've been a fan of Vietnamese food for several years now. I recently relocated to Oakland from the East Coast, and I wasn't sure what to expect with the new location's culinary options. Needless to say I am very pleased to be only a 5 minutes' walk from the restaurant. hehe
The decor is simple but clean and presentable. The staff are friendly and I've never felt "rushed" at all with my orders. I am a fish fanatic so I normally come here specifically for their fish entrees. I haven't had one yet that wasn't absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked/seasoned. I highly recommend you try their red snapper in any of the entrees. It's always tender and sweet.
The prices are excellent for the amount of food you get in return. I come here at least once a week.
My two suggestions would be any of the vermicelli bowls (fantastic arrangement and presentation) or the red snapper in the coconut milk based curry sauce with bean noodles. It's to die for!
Peace.
Jim
If you want overpriced, cater-strictly-to-white-people-who-like-"ethnic"-f ood-but-can't-handle-too-much-"ethnic"-people Vietnamese food, please come here.
The food is not bad, but why not support a real Vietnamese restaurant (with wayy lower prices)? Yes sometimes it is difficult to translate your order to the waitress, yes sometimes you may be sitting in a grimy seat, sharing a table with four other people, but goddamnit at least you get (more) than what you paid for when the food does arrive.
Also, there is only one pho item on the menu. It was not bad, which is why the restaurant gets 2 instead of 1 star. However, i could've paid almost half the price and gotten a bowl twice the size at any Vietnamese restaurant in Oakland Chinatown.

Nice decor, pretty good food, quick service, but no music!
Walked in for a lunch to myself here today. Service was great, super quick, not too friendly, but just the way I like it. I was well taken care of by the staff.
They were out of the Saigon beer I wanted, so I had the pale ale on the menu which was pretty good! I ordered the marinated beef over vermacelli which was good! Beef was a little fatty but everything was very tastey.
My only complaint was how quiet it was. There was no music, no one seemed to be talking, it made the environment a little akward. Four guys came in and sat down as I was getting my bill and also commented on how quiet it was in the place. I've seen it raging in there for lunch, but I think it's pretty dead other than that.

Although its not very "traditional", its pretty great food.
Everyone here is really nice, and makes you feel welcome every single time.
I've not had one bad meal here, yet, knock on wood. They have amazing pho, but for the price vs quantity, I might go somewhere else for some pho. Other than that, everything else is well worth it. The rice plates, their vermicelli bowls, and everything else is absolutely amazing.
Everything is full of flavor, and keeps your tongue excited to take that next bite, and the next, and the next.
Having read previous reviews on this place I was skeptical.
After ordering #19: the grilled beef with imperial rolls, special salad and rice, I was disappointed.
The meat was bland and dry. The special salad was nothing special at all. The imperial rolls were a bit too oily and their rice was nothing like it was described on their menu.
Kevin's noodle house on E12th tastes way better.
The decor and atmosphere is a bit more upscale than your average pho restaurant which felt a bit too stifling for me.
During the remainder of my evening my stomach unfortunately did not agree too well with the meal I had.
Also, they should have some type of music playing as hearing a bunch of pretentious women talk next to our table annoyed the hell outta me.
This was my first and last time at this place.
Food is OK, nothing terrible but I must agree with Suhi K: There is much much better VN food closeby at half the price.
For some reason, this place attracts the "office/lunch" crowd. People from the 'burbs who will only eat Pho if the restaurant isn't toooo weird. These are the same folks that are scared to eat at Tu Lan (their loss!).
Whenever one of my office mates suggests Pho, somehow we end up here. I always try to steer people to ____ which is MUCH better but Pho 84 is a known quantity, which makes people who are used to eating at chain restaurants feel safe.

I love Pho and am always on the search for good Pho. Pho 84 has some awesome varities of pho. I have been going there for over a decade and have not been disappointed.
I've been going to Pho 84 with my family for a few years now, and every time I go, I love it. I somehow convinced the boyfriend to try their food on Wednesday. Every time I've gone in the past, there has been a huge line, so I guess Wednesdays around 6 are a good time to go--even parking was a breeze!
Both of us got drinks--the boy an imported Vietnamese beer and me a mango smoothie. I always have a hard time deciding what drinks to get at Pho 84 because they are all so good--the coffee with condensed milk is always a great choice, probably not for dinner, but it's also a good conversation starter because it's so beautifully presented. I also love the lemonade mixed with iced tea. On Wednesday, though, it was a smoothie day. The mango smoothies are made from fresh mangoes and they truly taste like it. They can be a little bit heavy at times, because I think there is some sort of dairy in it too, but they are overall very refreshing.
Our appetizer of the night was the spicy beef salad. They marinate and grill thinly sliced pieces of beef and lay it on a bed of fresh mint, shredded carrots and jalapenos. It was even spicier than normal last night, but the flavor was still really strong, and the beef tender. Boy wasn't a fan of the mint, so we compromised. He ate all the meat and I ate all the mint...my favorite part.
We also ordered chicken satay and my personal favorite dish of red snapper in a coconut curry sauce with special rice. At Pho 84 you can choose between having regular rice or "special rice." The special rice is I believe cooked in chicken broth and saffron, which gives it a bright yellow color, but a lot more flavor than the ordinary rice.
The chicken satay consists of slices of chicken breast in a spicy red chili sauce with tons of green onions on top. It's very spicy, but goes along well with the rice. Boy's friend Dave ate our leftovers and apparently he was sweating like crazy but loved it.
The red snapper is fried and then covered in a coconut curry sauce with onions and mushrooms. The sauce itself is so tasty and addictive--even after the fish was gone, I like saving it to eat over rice. It's a little bit spicy, but not overwhelmingly so. You can also tell that everything is freshly made for each order because the fish, despite being covered in sauce, is still crispy.
All in all, it was an as usual wonderful meal at Pho 84. The food was fresh, tasty and flavorful, and the service was good (not outstanding, but good). The cost of eating there isn't as cheap as most Vietnamese places I've been to, but it's definitely worth it for the quality of the food. I highly recommend this place to anyone. Even the Boy said he'd love to go again, which is a huge stamp of approval.

Even though I woke up with garlic-cat-breath this morning, I am craving the stuffed calamari I had last night at Pho 84. It was tender, rich, garlicky, gingery, and Pho-kin' delish. In fact, I ate the entire platter - Oink and Meow!
We brought our citified friends in an effort to impress them with some Oakland savoir faire, and they were all Pho Eighty For it.
Here's what we all ate: super-fresh spring rolls with mint and peanutchity sauce, a big platter of grilled meat, that mmm, mmm, good stuffed calamari, and another calamari dish with curry and noodles, oh yes, and that special, special rice! Needless to say, we left stuffed and impressed.

Definitely not your average pho place, this place is somewhat more upscale. The service here is very good and friendly. We came in pretty late one night, and they were very nice even when we were still there after they closed. The place appears very clean, which is nice because there's not much that would spoil your appetite more than a really dirty restaurant.
Very little pho selection, but it's not bad. I'll probably order something else next time, as if I want good pho I can just stay in San Jose. I also tried a red snapper dish they had, which was very good. The rice that comes on their rice plates is flavored and a nice accent to the dishes. I would probably eat here again if I was in the area.
I used to work a block from this place. If you're not in the mood for a deli sandwich, downtown Oakland is a wasteland when it comes to lunch options. But this place is an oasis. So good, I almost shed a tear thinking about it.
I would always call ahead and order my stuff to-go, because from about 11:30-2:00 it's uber crowded. I'm usually anti-salad. I think the worst way I could die would be through excessive force feedings of lettuce.
But the chicken salad ($10 roughly) has all of my favorite things: cabbage, carrots, cilantro, chicken (duh), the most amazing salad dressing, and those yummy white crunchy won ton like things that come in a little white paper bag and stick to your tongue. I love those little bitches.
They also have the best Vietnamese coffee ($3-4) you will ever imbibe. It takes about ten minutes to brew (they always make it fresh) and it'll make you feel like you just did an eight ball. If you want to avoid sugar overload, ask for the condensed milk on the side.
The service is usually spot-on, even when they're crazy busy. The prices are a tad steep for cheapos such as myself, but if you want a cheap lunch, go to Jimmy's deli on Broadway and get the tuna sandwich. It's good. Trust me.

I like this place alright, but I wasn't wild about the lack of variety of Pho, my bowl came with every weird chunk of beef and fat in it under the sun. Also, MSG doesn't soothe me.
Not the best, but ok
Came here on a weeknight, and noticed right away that this place is unassumingly upscale. Nice interior, pleasant crowd and good service.
I ordered a rice and combination meat dish with chicken, pork and shrimp. Tasted great, but why does so much food have to come on such a small plate? Food was really good, great flavor in the meat and rice. Shrimp roll was awesome! But the price was not really reflective of the vibe or the service, My bill was about $20 which included a salad, 2 rolls, and an import beer. Great for an evening out that's close to home.
Seems like a nice place to take a good friend or a first/second date. Since it's a little small it makes for an intimate setting...but at the same time has that trendy vibe to it so you feel comfortable.
Had the pleasure of having lunch here last Thursday. The wait wasn't too bad, and service was quick. Decided on the #19 - Grilled chicken with two imperial rolls over special rice and salad. Food arrived pretty quickly and was really good. Love the special rice.
