Review from Mike P.
I only had the privilege of having a cheesesteak in Philadelphia once, as a small child. I do remember the cheese whiz. Other than that, I have no real frame of reference to compare to Philly's Best. All I can say is that I've eaten at both the Evanston and Chicago locations several times and always left happy. The staffs at both locations are friendly. The cheesesteaks are a perfect combo of crunchy bread and juicy and cheesy ingredients.
Get it with Cheese Whiz or normal provolone. A regular size fills a big guy like me. The large is enough for two people. -

This review is solely for the service. The food is great, but we niormally go to the Belmont location and that's what we will do in the future. We placed an online order and received a notice saying it would be there in an hour. When it wasn't we called and were told to call back in 5 min if it didn't show up. We called back and were given the run around. At one point I was told the driver was there and ringing my doorbell, ummm no he wasn't, I think I would have been aware of that! All told, it took an hour and forty min to get our food which is too long for a Tuesday night. They offered no real compensation, the delivery driver was supposed to reimburse our delivery fee but didn't. Whoever I was talking to said they'd give us a couple cheese cakes next time we ordered delivery. She didn't seem too happy when I told her we never order cheese cake from there and wouldn't be getting delivery from them again after this experience.
No one seemed to know what they were doing or were able to explain what took so long. By the time we got the food, it was cold and the boss sauce was missing (the whole point of the onion rings!). The promised call from the manager the next day never came. Suspiciously we did get some fraudulent charges on our debit card (they take an imprint of the card used online). Be very wary when ordering delivery or better yet, go to the Belmont store instead! -

Most of the reviews here are for the cheese steak sandwich. I'm a vegetarian, so I normally get the tuna melt or the veggie sub....both excellent. They have an awesome lunch special. I think it's 5.95 for a 6" sub (hot or cold), fries (seasoned or regular) and a drink. To me, this is the best sandwich place in Evanston....far, far better than Jimmy Johns. We frequently take our grandchildren who love the single-slice pizzas.
They can each get a different one. The counter help have always been very friendly and attentive. They even remember my grandsons' favorite pizza. I highly recommend it if you are looking for a wonderful sandwich. The decor is nothing special, but there is convenient parking out front. -

I was introduced to Philly's Best on Dillo Day after watching B.o.B. (who is AMAZING live, by the way), and it was a decent experience.
SERVICE: Decent, but not amazing.
AMBIANCE: Best experienced when not sober. That is all I have to say.
FOOD: I had the portabella grinder, and it was solidly good. Portion size was on the small side for the price.
I'm not exactly itching to go again, but I would if a friend wanted to go. -
Review from Jacob J.
Warm sandwiches are a must. An Italian beef is good stuff, but better with hot peppers or giardinera and cheese. Their meatball sandwich 6" is a perfect work of art with the basics covered; fresh toasted bread, tasty sauce with meat and cheese. The cheese I don't care so much for, it's the same stuff used on their pizza pies and unless I'm hammered (and unable to get slices elsewhere) I'm not going to order a slice. Ha! Slices are salty and oily but moderately priced.
Philly's also offers free wi-fi and is a hangout for the Ndub security guards. What is up with security guards? Do they really have to carry that "cane up their butt" swagger.
The food, value and all is a solid 3.5 stars, but going for 4 stars is pushing it. -

After a hard workout at Ultimate fitness in evanston, I went to get some protein...a cheese steak at phillys best. I saw it on chicagos best.
I tried the original philly steak. It was good and not greasy and messy when comparing to great steak company frequently found in malls.
Next time, I'm going to try the other items. -

The grinders can be good here depending on which line cook you get and what time of day you order. I always get grinders on garlic bread, which add to the savoryness. But I have to say, I've been repeatedly grossed out by slices that I've picked up stopping through, to the point where I've stopped coming here altogether. There's like something wrong with the slice warmer that makes everything turn into lukewarm wet 'used to be pizza' and they've never fixed it. Plus slices are overpriced.

The Philly Cheese Steak, the Chicago Deep Dish Pizza, the LA...whatever the hell they eat out there. There are certain foods that define a city, and to call yourself the "best" at any of them means you better not be fakin the funk.
I'm an average sized guy with a big man's appetite and tried my luck with the footlong cheesesteak with onions, mushrooms and provolone. 15 minutes later I was sprawled out on the couch with a crooked grin on my face in a food coma (know to some as "the itis")
If you don't have the time to travel 800 miles east to Geno's or Pat's, this is your second best option. -

I went here on the suggestion of a very good lady-friend of mine and she was correct, very good sandwiches. I had never had a grinder, or so I thought. A grinder is simply a cooked hoagie it seems. And it was delightful. The menu is vast and super affordable and I look forward to exploring it even further.

Philly's Best is located on Emerson, a few blocks east of Ridge in an older strip shopping center. There is off-street parking available in a lot in front of the building, but space is limited.
The build-out is inexpensive and not aesthetically pleasing. It's also a little dated and worn. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a joke, but there's a sign above the counter explaining what they don't provide and where to get it. For example (paraphrased) they don't provide free water, but it can be found in Lake Michigan a few blocks east.
A young girl took my order with the assistance of a dark haired man. Neither went out of their way to be friendly.
I ordered a lunch special, which includes a small sandwich, fries and a small drink for $5.99. I had the chicken breast grinder and seasoned fries. The sandwich was average--nothing special. The fries were frozen--not fresh cut, but tasted pretty good. The soft drinks are self-service and refills are not free.
If available, I would rate this two and a half stars, but will average it up to give them the benefit of the doubt. It was my one and only time at Philly's Best. -

I can't really say there is anything "Philly" about "Philly's Best" other than the stylized signs they put up.
As other Yelpers pointed out, this is a place probably best to go when you are drunk because its one of the few late night places in the area besides Burger King. That said, the meh food and slow service are probably also better appreciated when drunk.
Decided to switch things up and stop here instead of my usually joints for lunch since I had forgotten why I don't come more regularly. They screwed up my order, the soda fountain was out of CO2 or something, and it really wasn't anything special.
I've tried their subs before and they are okay, the pizza always looks pretty nasty and is way to thick and liquidy by east coast standards, and tends to sit in a warmer than only reminds me old 7-11 food.
In terms of pricing, similar menu items are about 10-20% cheaper at other similar joints within a 5 block walk (Noyes Street or Downtown). It's also pretty funny that they have LCDs for their main menu, but updates other prices on old signs with masking tape.
If you do go, I recommend calling ahead because even for a simple order of french fries you will be waiting a pretty long time even when they are not busy. -

One measure of a restaurant is how much you enjoyed the individual experience. Another is whether you'd return. Well, I've been going to this Philly's Best location for at least 12 years, and I keep going back. It's not an everyday destination, but when you're in the mood for a cheese steak, you can't go wrong here. As an alternative, the South Street Beef grinder is similar to a cheese steak, but with the addition of tomato sauce and the entire sandwich is baked. I really like their cheese steak, but a while ago I switched to the South Street Beef and I've never looked back. If you have a big appetite, go for the large, but a small is plenty for an average appetite. Their lunch special bundles fries (get the seasoned fries) and a drink, which is the perfect (for me) amount of food.
I can't disagree with the comments about the location (it's an older store in a strip mall) or the wait (you'll probably wait 5-10 minutes for your food), but go, relax and enjoy one of the best cheese steaks in Chicago. Or call ahead and carry out. It tastes just as good at home, and you're less likely to burn the roof of your mouth. -

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO! Seventeen NOs!
The food here shouldn't even be legal. I can't believe I paid nine dollars (!) for a veggie sandwich (!) that left a huge, ugly, yellow puddle of dirty old grease in the plastic basket it was served in. There was fat dripping out on all sides. Everything was soaked and yet it tasted like nothing. Not like veggies, not like good bread, not even 'good greasy' like a slice of pizza might when you're feeling like it. Even if you really, really hate your body and really, really love greasy food, you will find better, more trustworthy "100% grease" food than this.
The whole place has an absolutely obscure aura. It seems like nothing has been changed here since about 1982. The long faded color of the wall 'decoration', the unclean chessboard floord,... Mind you, I liked all of that, and I would celebrate Philly's Best as incredibly charming and wonderful, if only they served food that was even close to being edible. The staff was friendly and funny, the people who came in all seemed to come right out of 1982 (or 1954, for that matter) as well, making for a nice, authentic neighborhood dump that clashes pleasantly with some of the close-by, shiny suburban establishments.
But the food, no no no. 17 no's. -

Garlic bread: 5 stars.
Service: -1 star; it was late night and we actually went there in hopes of not having to wait as long, not so
Philly chicken steak: -2 stars; I could not finish half of a half of one
5 - 1 - 2 = 2; I guess a great late night, help cure that hangover type place and my friends seem to really enjoy the cheesesteak, but I'll only eat the garlic bread from now on. -

I'll update and (hopefully, upgrade) this review after I give this place a second chance - something I wouldn't have done except that Mark S.'s and other reviewers convinced me that my very mediocre experience there must have been some kind of a fluke.
FIrst off, I LOVE Philly Cheese Steaks - but my primary reaction to the one I ordered here was "WHERE'S THE BEEF???" . It was like a bun with Provolone (I'll do the Whiz Wit next time!) and a few scraps of meat.
I did order it as part of a larger delivery order and obviously didn't "order it correctly" - So I'll give it another shot and let ya know. -

I don't eat steak. or meat for that matter, so this will not be a useful review for the meat eaters of Evanston. I can, however, vouch for the vegetarian sandwich. It is most definitely vegetarian junk food to the max. If you want to feel nourished, or even mobile after your meal, don't go here. Go to Pita Pete's. Maybe Subway. Even the sorry excuse for a veg sandwich (tho very tasty) at Potbellys, which is thickly stuffed with 3 different cheeses and few vegetables, is health food compared to this. Of course it is a cheese steak joint, so what would you expect?
This Philly's veg sandwich does have a surprising number of vegetables, but it is also covered in tons of melted cheese and oil. It's big, but not that cheap considering the ingredients can't be that high quality. The wait can also be long, even if they're not too crowded. Also, in the summer it is boiling hot in there. This makes an unpleasant experience for anyone wanting to "dine-in," but at least we can leave. That sucks worse for the poor employees. -

It takes quite a bit to get me to eat chicken or CHUCKIN as I call it. I am not normally a fan. But...
Philly's Best Chicken Grinder ROCKS!!! Forget my ENTIRE CHUCKIN phobia. This sandwich rocks!!! I get the Chicken breast, light onions, tomatoes, cheese, and a bit of mayo. This thing feeds me for 2 meals, or feeds 2 people for one meal. It ROCKS!!!!!
Couple this with an order of cheese fries and I am in HEAVEN!!
LOVE IT. Glad that I do not order in often, but hey, this is a great option!!Listed in: Bring it to me!

I really loved Philly's Best. I went there 2 times (in Evanston and near the Cubs stadium) and it was great ! You have to wait a little but when it finally comes you can enjoy your meal !
I tried the south street beef and the portabella grinder ! Great stuff ! Look forward to going there again ! -

I am downgrading my review. The vibe is depressing. It must have had its glory days judging by the faded articles on the walls, but now it feels like a burnt out factory town after all the industry packed up and left. The staff is not friendly. Some look lobotomized while others seem to want you to believe they are involved in organized crime. More importantly, I had an expensive grilled chicken salad today that was downright disgusting.
I was grateful for their existence to satisfy my occasional, irrepressible cheesesteak fix. Even that is now on hold until I know if I get food poisoning from the dry, old, weird-tasting chicken I just ate. -

This location delivers to the far north side of Chicago, not just Evanston. I've never been in the actual restaurant. Who wants to go outside? Philly's constantly mails out "free delivery" and "$2 off" coupons which really make delivery a good deal.
Delivery is pretty quick. I usually get my food within a half hour of ordering it. The cheesesteaks are fantastic. I also love the fries, but they're usually a little soggy from sitting in the paper bag, so I pop them in the toaster oven for five minutes. (This works for the cheesesteaks too if you like crispier bread.) The chocolate cake is good, but insanely rich. I've also tried their wings, which are just ok and sort of bland, and their fried macaroni & cheese, which I didn't like at all. It's the cheesesteaks that keep me ordering from here way too much!Listed in: speedy delivery

The Best Philly Cheese Steak in Chicago is what I am told. I can't argu it is one of the best I have had. I can't seem to get a great Philly Cheese Steak on the west coast. I asked the owner why that is he said it is the meat but more how it is cut. They have been doing this for over 30 years and boy do they have it down. Lots of meat perfect amount of cheese grilled onions and I added mushrooms. When i bit into this it was incredible the meat was tender and juicy full of flavior onions were there but not over powering the cheese oozing into the meat with thinly sliced mushrooms on top. This is how its done. Keep up the great work and they will be around another 30 years. This is a must if in Chicago they have three locations.

The Philly steaks here are delicious. Definitely something you'll crave late at night. It comes pretty oily so ask for lite oil. Add green peppers and mushrooms on garlic bread, you cant go wrong with it. I believe a sandwich is around $8 without any extras, just cheese and onions. Regular is about 6 inches and the large is probably about a foot long. The chipotle mayo is good too. There's a lot right outside for parking. -1 star because of all the oil they put in the darn sandwiches!

No words to describe how awesome their cheesesteaks are. Greasy and cheesey goodness. You get a choice between provolone or cheez whiz, grilled carmelized onions, nice portion of steak, and warm soft bread. They also have a decent deep dish pizza by the slice.
The family is actually from Phillly, you can't get more authentic than that.
If you're in the area and looking for a a great cheesesteak, this is the only place to go. They're open late and deliver. -

If u havent' had a Philly cheesesteak from here, its not a real Philly. U better ask somebody! i use to work at the belmont location years ago. and that's when i had my very first philly cheesesteak. i've had others since then at other places but NONE compare to Philly's. except the cheesesteak i tried at Pizza Bella when i went to West Palm Beach, Fl. Go find a Philly's Best location and get urself a real philly if u havent yet. that first bite will send u to cheesesteak nirvana!

Review from David R.
Coming back here was like the time a couple of years ago that I rented Goonies, a childhood favorite of mine, to see if it would hold up. It mostly did, which is to say that my warm memories had less to do with the inflated-nostalgia factor than I was afraid of. This place is actually pretty good (the movie too).
We used to order from here all the time in college and after, but I hadn't been back or had their food for at least seven years. I used to love their cheesesteaks but in the meantime (last spring), I had been to Philadelphia for the real thing at Pat's and Geno's.
I got a slice of pizza, which was good but not great in all its floppy, cheesy glory (thicker than NY style but not in a bready pan-style way). B+ on the slice. The real attraction, of course, is the cheesesteak. The "regular" size is immense and $8.49 but...you only live once, I suppose. The sandwich was as good as I remember and more importantly, just as good as Pat's and Geno's. There was slightly too much cheese for me, but the rest was perfect. A solid A, maybe an A+ if I get them to reduce the cheese by about 25% next time.
The folks were friendly here. They agreed to sell me a slice of "mushroom" pizza even though all they had was cheese. They threw some mushrooms on the grill and then put them on the slice before they warmed it in the oven. However, they quoted me ten minutes for the order and it was more like twenty. -

Awesome, fresh onion rings, great pastas, but skip the cheesesteak.
I love that Philly's Best is so close to me (kitty-corner to my current residence) and that it's open pretty late every day of the week. Their onion rings, while pricey, are worth every cent if you've ever had a craving for something fried or substantial in the evening.
I have also really enjoyed their lasagna and pastas before, but be warned that they can take a really long time to prepare, and if you come near closing, they won't let you eat in the restaurant (even if you just got your food before closing!)
I'm not a big fan of the cheesesteak, which I actually ended up throwing away, but that might just have been an adversity to cheesesteaks as a whole. Check this out, it's a good alternative to late night BK or Tbell -
Review from Gary C.
Holy cheesesteak, Batman. But I'll get to that in a second...
My coworkers and I have been getting delivery from this place for a while and I used to try a different sandwich every time we ordered.
Reuben is gold.
Italian beef is ehh...let's just say my favorite is from a famous Chicago hot dog joint that rhymes with snore-pillows [use your imagination people =) ].
South street beef was better than I expected.
Monterey chicken was pretty good.
Then I said, "why have I NOT had a philly from this place yet??" The rest is history. You gotta respect a place that offers CHEEZ WHIZ as a substitute cheese option. This sandwich has moved up my favorite sandwich list, and is arguably my favorite sandwich of all time..ALL TIME.
Had I started off right and got the cheesesteak from the get-go, Philly's Best would've received a solid 5 stars. But the other grinders weighed in on my decision..4 stars it is.Listed in: Hand me a sammie.

I spent far too many late nights here over orders of garlic bread and broccoli and cheese. The food is exactly what you would expect. Greasy, cheap, and delicious.
Everyone who works there is always very nice and willing to look the other way when my dining companion would take ALL the condiments over to our table for personal use for the duration of our stay. -

An awesome cheesesteak in Evanston, mere steps from the Northwestern campus? Believe it!
I think all the weight i gained in college was a result of eating here but it can't be beat for a greasy sunday lunch when you're recovering from your hangover. -

Had delivery from here last week. Have been on bed rest for pregnancy and am Asian'd- and pizza'd-out. I have avoided Philly's Best for years since I was only in there once 5-10 years ago and found the woman working to be extremely rude.
Longing for a hot veg sandwich and some sides, I gave it a whirl. Reviews, particularly on GrubHub say delivery takes an eternity. So, I was afraid to order the cheese fries my husband wanted, afraid they'd arrive the texture and temperature of a wet down pillow.
Not so! Delivery was very, very fast and our food was soooo good. Also ordered a salad. It was fresh, humongous, and not all lettuce as I suspected; only around $6-7.
The sandwiches are a lil' pricey at $10 for a large, but it is very big and the other food prices I found average to below, so who cares. Will order again! -

Philly's is good for late night - sure it's really greasy, but if you're looking for something healthy, don't try cheesesteaks with fries!
I love their seasoned or cheese fries and the chicken cheese steak is really good.
I don't dine in here much, so I can't say much about the service - though the people who take my order over the phone are usually really nice. -
Review from Amanda M.

Great cheesesteaks. Get them with whiz for the perfect combo of warm bread, beef, and yummy melty cheese. No, they are not healthy - it's a cheesesteak, but I don't think they are overly greasy.
They deliver, which is great when there is a few feet of snow on the ground. Plus there are coupons for free delivery on the mail all the time, and you get a discount if you order online. -
Review from Jason T.

If you are a fan of cheesesteaks, this is the best I have found in the Chicagoland area. The owners are sticklers for authenticity, going so far as to import both the meat and the bread from Philadelphia. This effort can be tasted in the cheesesteak. The meat is flavorful, savory, and the carmelized onions add texture to make this one of my favorite sammiches anywhere in Chicagoland
My standard order is the cheesesteak with onions and cheese whiz, referred to in Philly as the "whiz-wit." I never thought I would ever think cheese whiz could be superior to provolone in any way, but then I tried this combination at the suggestion of a native Philly resident, and now I can never go back. Also the size of the sammich is pretty substantial, a small will be sufficient for most people. Other notable menu items are the onion rings with boss sauce, cheese fritters, and tastykakes for dessert. An indulgence for sure, but well worth the waistline woes. -

I enjoy eating a greasy philly cheese here. I recommend asking to go light on the onions because they really hook you up with the extra flavor. Also, the spaghetti is pretty tasty for $8. They will give you a whole pan of spaghetti which equals 2 meals.. plus a half loaf of Italian garlic bread. I also enjoyed the chicken grinders, but take in consideration that the large size is 2 meals.

I don't like a lot about Philly, but I love their cheesesteaks! I've been to Pats and Geno's in South Philly, and my favorite steak came from Dalessandro's- YUM. So I've learned there are certain choices to be made when ordering your steak in Philly. First, the cheese choice- white, Provolone, American, cheese whiz. And ordering a steak "wit" means with grilled onions- the only way to go. Can you imagine how excited I was to learn that in addition to living in the home of Italian Beef (where we have our own ordering lingo too), Chicago has a family chain of legitimate Philly cheesesteak shops!
So if you want to try a good Philly cheesesteak in Chicago get yourself to this place! I recommend first timers order a "large Whiz Wit." Yeah go for the cheese whiz option, it's not fancy Provolone, but we're talking about cheesesteak here! They cook up their steaks per order, so have a seat and sit tight while the cook gets that steak and onions combo sizzlin' on the grill. He'll smear an unhealthy dose of cheese whiz on a nice roll and load up the meat-n-onions when they're ready. Are you ready? You're going to feel seriously sick once this steaming hot pile hits your stomach, but it's gonna taste so good it's worth it. When you're done, you may want to pick up some Tastycakes for dessert- they import Pa's version of Little Debbie snack cakes special! Once every other month is about my limit. But when I want it, Philly's Best delivers the best of Philly without having to deal with the rest of Philly!Listed in: Bread Based Creations

We went to it on Aug 18 thursday night. The girl who took order was so rude and yell ing us to hurry. We ended up leaving and will not going there again. Horrible service. I used to work as a waitress and you never do that in restaurant business!!!!!!!!
