18 reviews for Philly Slim's Cheesteaks
Ok I'll keep this short and simple.
Best cheesesteak in the area.
Fries and sides are way overpriced
Still will go here for my local cheesesteak fix.
My disappointing takeout dinner.
I got the chicken cheesesteak w/peppers & onions.
In actuality: air sandwich with bits of chicken/pep/onion. Seriously, where TF was the chicken?
I also got the boneless buffalo wings.
In actuality: over-cooked, under-sized order of boneless chicken pieces with a side of hot sauce.
The good thing? Delivery took approx. 16 minutes. But then again, it's a Sunday night-- not to mention I live ~3 blocks away. Regardless, I'd rather wait 30+ minutes for a decent cheesesteak from somewhere else.
The verdict? Philly cheesesteak, my ass.
Okay cheesesteaks here.
Check out the Widow Maker;
it's ridiculous.
Having spent 4 years in Philly, one thing I miss is a good cheesteak. This place almost qualifies. In fact, it is on par with a mid-level Philadelphia steak like Abner's, but is no Tony Luke's / Jim's / Genos. The first time I ordered from Slim's, I got the widow maker. Way too salty. This last time, I got the triple cheese with mushrooms and onions. Not quite peppery enough, there was just a little something missing. But defintely good enough to order again and a solid go to. Not quite Carl's but a pretty good NY option...would recommend if you have a craving...
Decent cheesesteak place, not the best, but good for what it was. Also, was super convenient to my old apartment so I couldn't complain too much. The "Widowmaker" was just that - a supremely extravagant sandwich which was delicious but I'm probably still hanging on to some of its cholesterol from a couple years back.
We ordered a Philly Cheese Steak, a Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and Buffalo wings and everything was sooooooo good. We were so pleasantly surprised, especially after reading the reviews here. I further can't believe anyone finds the sandwiches small. We still have the second halves of our sandwiches in the fridge!
For all the excitement about eating unhealthy food, I didn't find the cheesesteak I had fun or indugent. I will take their word for it tha it is authentic, but I found the beef a bit dry and short on flavor. it was a reasonable size, but sorry, for $7 (and less) there are many more enjoyable sandwhiches in nyc.
Cheesesteak places are usually dives, but this place has really let itself go in just the few years it's been open. Cluttered and dirty, with unfriendly signs ("DO NOT TOUCH THE DISPLAY SODAS"). The cheesesteaks are subpar, served on too-soft rolls with no crust or crunch. My request for "light on the onions" was ignored. And the fries ($3) and onion rings ($3.50) -- I got the "Frings" combo ($4.15) are total rip-offs. You get just a small paper tray of cheap crinkle-cut frozen fries and a few FAKE onion rings (the kind made from chopped onions and lots and lots of flour). Didn't they actually take pride in serving fresh cut fries when they first opened?
So a mediocre cheesesteak, lousy fries & fake rings (and such small portions!), and two small bottled waters set me back over $15, and for that I could have eaten much better elsewhere. Which I will do next time.
Skimpy portions, but strictly from a flavor perspective, pretty damn delicious.
I used to live across the street from Philly Slim's. It was a decent cheesesteak. They don't use Amoroso rolls which I prefer. They're a little stingy with the cheese whiz on your fries or sandwich. They got a tastykakes which is a huge ++. Fries are soggy.
The steak just didn't have enough seasoning. But since I don't make it out to Philly too often, this hits the spot until the next time I'm in South Philly.
I went here and ordered the aptly named widowmaker. While the taste of it was pretty good, I felt the meat could have been piled on just a little more - especially for $10 (it was $9.25 but they had to charge my card $10 - which is a breach of contract with the credit card). I guess the hero already reached enough of an unhealthy status that they could not justify putting more ingredients on it. I probably will not return based on the lack of value.
Anyone who's from Philly will tell you that you have to visit the city of Brotherly Love in order to get an authentic cheesesteak. You know what - they're right.
But I find NY cheesesteaks are about 90% of the way there -- and if someone offered you 90 bucks to walk one mile and 10 bucks to walk another 98 miles (to Philly), you'd be quite content to bankroll the $90, right?
Here are the things I look for in a cheesesteak:
Bread: Philly Slims' bread is soft and tastes fresh-baked. Note that I've only had them for lunch so it might not be as fresh for dinner.
Meat: It's good. Has a peppery taste to it. Felt like it could have used more meat.
Cheese: I like Cheese Whiz on mine. They don't mess it up and they put on the right amount. Seems like their American and Provolone is fine, too, based on what I hear from friends.
Toppings: They have the standard toppings. I went with Hot & Sweet Peppers. They were just so-so.
Delivery: Pretty quick. Cheesesteak still warm upon receipt. They did forget a cheesesteak though when I ordered for the office (luckily it wasn't mine).
Extras: They have Tastykakes for $1.25. Sweet. These are similar to Hostess cakes (Yankee Doodles, etc.) but I like these more. They're made in Philly and hard to find in NYC. I really like the chocolate cupcakes. Hits the spot after a cheesesteak and a nice antidote to the mega-sized cupcake trend.
Other Menu Items: They offer chicken or veggies as alternate options to meat. The waffle fries are ok. Onion rings also available.
I'd say this is my favorite cheesesteak uptown but I'd rank it behind Carl's (murray hill and yankee stadium), 99 Miles to Philly (east village), and Cheesesteak Factory (les). I haven't been to 99 miles or C.F. post-yelp so haven't written them up (and put out a list) just yet...
Good cheesesteaks but not the best. I do think the sandwiches run on the small side as I often opt for double meat and double cheese. If you're in the area and need a place to eat then it's not bad, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here.
Anyone who knows me understands that I am a huge fan of meat. And cheese. And bread. Anything unhealthy, really. I was also born and raised in Philadelphia, which makes me very biased when it comes to finding good cheesesteaks in NYC.
Philly Slim's cheesesteaks are authentic enough (enough being the keyword here). I've eaten here a handful of times, and it's very hit or miss, depending on the freshness of the bread and the consistency of the cheese. Silver Spurs (there are two of them downtown), surprisingly, makes far better cheesesteaks.
One of the better cheesesteak places in the city, better than 99 miles. Everyone knows to get a proper 'steak you have to go to Philly though. Use this place when you are jammed up and need a quick eat or you are in dire need of a wiz laden concoction and cant get to Philly.
New York cheesesteaks jaded me. Disappointments at 99 Miles to Philly, where it felt more like 9000 Miles from Philly, and the Cheesesteak Factory, forced me into a self-imposed cheesesteak boycott.
Came across some reviews of Slims, got the craving, and their I was on line during lunch. Bringing me to one problem, the wait. The place was not packed, a few people milling around, I ordered immediately, but had to wait over 20 minutes for my order. We are talking cheesesteaks, not a full service restaurant. I think they cook them one at a time. At least they were fresh.
My only other problem, my friend ordered the loaded and received hot peppers without warning. I evaded that mistake, from experience elsewhere, but a warning is helpful.
The cheesesteaks were quality. Nice, soft bread. A generous portion, with enough mushrooms and onions to make me happy. One note, I had the chicken cheesesteak, which I often get, and the it blew away the other NY cheesesteak outposts I've recently visited, and is right there with Carl's. My friend vouched for the steak version, so I will go with his word.
Next step is consistency, and there will be more visits to find out. Also plan to checkout the downtown location. Read mixed reviews on that location, but only one way to tell.
If you can't tell by now, taste trumps health factor for me. For the most part I eat healthy but I don't limit myself from the pizza, philly cheesesteaks, burgers, or beer. So when I went on a recent trip to NY, I was on a quest for the best cheesesteak. I was dissappointed at the first two joints but Philly Slims came through like no other. Meaty, Greasy, and cheesy, I scarfed the whole thing down in about 5 minutes. I couldn't stop stuffing my face with it...haha. Needless to say...I'll be back.
I'm not from Philly. I've been to Pat's once though and have enjoyed a good cheesesteak all my adult life. I've been to Philly Slim's at least three times now. This place is not good. The steak in a cheesesteak is, almost by necessity, cheap flavorless meat. That's what all the toppings are for! There is no love in this restaurant. The bread is nothing special, the portions are disappointing and the prices are not so low. The preparation of the food here has no love either. I ordered my sandwich with (for a lot more money) extra lettuce and tomato. I had to literally dig through my sandwich to find one piece of each. The sandwiches are sloppily put together, the order is always wrong, the service sucks and the prices are kinda high for an 8 dollar sandwich that doesn't satisfy. It's also tiny and uncomfortable. Do yourself a favor, go to a different destination for this destination-type food
