I visited Phillipo's new salon twice in a month already!  I had highlights and a fantastic blow dry for $115!  The salon is like a visit to Museum of Contemporary Arts except its for Salons.  The atmosphere is futuristic but absolutely pretension-free.  My highlight was amazing and blow dry was excellent.  I also bought a brush that can potentially take Phillipo out of business.  It is really good especially if you have long hair.  I enjoyed my experience and was very happy with results.  You can have espresso, champagne, d-coke or anything else you want.  There are very cool TV screens on each mirror for each chair.  Very Jet Blue!  Phillipo gets as many stars as I can give him.

As for the reviewer below, the customer card saves information about you as a customer for future visits.  I always have a cappuccino ready with skim milk.  On your first visit you should have asked for champagne.  While the salon works well for busy professional on the go that lives in Fenway, I still think it has an appeal to folks that appreciate finer things in life.  People that appreciate quality and consistency in hair care.

Try Phillipo!

I first spyed this sleek little salon, located in the Trilogy building, a few weeks ago when I was dining at Cambridge 1.  It appeared to be open late, so I decided to give it a shot and made an evening appointment. My hair was ratty and desperately in need of a refresh.

First impression: Phillipostyle embraces a mod sensibility. The decor is mainly white with accents of black and red. There are built-in mini TV screens in the full length mirrors (not yet functional, but I'm told that they will play a loop of popular syndicated shows like Friends and Seinfeld, as well as local advertising). In addition, the salon offers a "style bar" which encourages drop-ins for blow outs. No cut required--just styling for the girl on the go. It seems like a neat concept, but I'd be interested to know if a blowout is actually an affordable indulgence. It should be noted that the entire salon would fit into a studio apartment. In fact, the coat rack is located in the bathroom, which also houses the washer/dryer. A little odd.

Second observation: When a salon/stylist has their own product line, that's the first sign that your cut isn't going to be cheap. The second tip-off is when the customer comment card asks you to specify a beverage of choice--water, coffee, or champagne. Note: I specified champagne, but it was not offered to me. No biggie really, but don't ask me to pick a beverage if you're going to ignore my feedback. The comment card also asked for my AIM, Twitter, and Facebook usernames so I can only assume they are targeting a young professional, tech-savvy clientele.

Third observation: No attitude from the staff, which is always a big plus. Phillipo, the owner, is quite chatty and I give him props for trying to make clientele feel welcome. My stylist, Donna, was nice but I don't think my cut was anything extraordinary. In fact, I've received better cuts for much less.

Actually, the best part of the service was the shampoo, which included a vigorous head massage. It reminded me of Chinatown hair salons. However, I disliked that the shampoo area was cramped and stuck behind the kitchen/minibar. It was a tight squeeze for the stylists who were trying to get back there to fetch products.

At $70 for a simple cut (not including tip), my wallet stung a bit. I didn't think the service, nor locale, really justifed the price. And for a salon that touts "everyday affordability," I'm not really impressed. I've paid $30 less for a cut on Newbury Street. Alas, the search for the perfect salon continues...

You must go see Desiree at Phillipostyle.  This was my first time at the salon and I absolutely loved it. I have never had a stylist do EXACTLY what I asked of them and having curly hair, often makes my salon experiences frustrating - but this girl is fantastic. Desiree took the time to talk to me about what I wanted and actually listened and followed through with an amazing cut and color.  She answered everyone one of my questions about product and maintenence with enthusiasm and knowledge.  It's really nice to actually find someone that takes pride in what they are doing and enjoys it too.  She was super friendly (everyone was, actually) and she made me feel totally comfortable and at ease.

I got the opportunity to check this place out on "Wild Wednesday."  It's a party atmosphere with a DJ. If you're looking for something unique and random and want to leave this place with a pounding headache, I'd highly suggest a Wednesday night appointment!  Tiny space, loud techno garbagey music and strobe lights. Yeah...weird.

Desiree has left the building...check her out at Station 8 salon in Jamaica Plain instead. 761 Centre Street 617-553-4884

I have now received a coupon in the mail stating that for $9,999 a year (yeah, you got that right), I can get unlimited haircuts (and no, my hair will not be bathed in gold).

1)  They are still sending me text messages despite me telling them to stop.

2)  They won't stop asking me to be their friend on Facebook.

I like to think that your hair is like a suit for your head that you wear everyday! So why wouldn't you get your head-suit tailored at the best head-tailor there is? If that's your bag then Phillipo is your guy! From the cool digs to his kickass logo Phillipostyle is everything I never expected i'd be down with for haircutting. I used to go to the $15 place down the street from where I live, never again! It's totally worth the extra loot. Just try it once and I guarantee you'll never get your head-suit done anywhere else!

I guess if you have money to throw at making your hair perfect, you should try it. The little cupcakes were cute but I'd rather spend my hard-earned money on my hair, not atmosphere.  It seems like this place thinks it needs all the bells and whistles to be hip, but all that little stuff means the customer is paying more in the end for some cutesy pampering.  And yeah, flamingly gay guy that looked at my hair - you should figure out what chunks mean, since you're in the business and such..  Perhaps I should try the place, but I didn't feel like shelling out $100 just for a hair cut.

I actually wrote a raving review for the place back when it was called Blow and my long-time hair stylist Donna was there. Donna wisely jumped ship and I followed her. As soon as the place changed its name to Phillipo and stuck a transformer-like head (which is meant to be a graphic outline of the salon owner's face) all over everything the place felt incredibly garish and uncomfortable. Still I left wishing them well. That is until Phillipo tried to trick me into coming in for an appointment I had set up with Donna before she left, hoping to pull a bait and switch on me (he apparently did this to some of her other clients) and later when he texted me numerous times about events at his salon. I have a very limited cell phone plan, so I paid for each and every stupid text he sent. He also texted my husband's work-line numerous times, even though my husband had never been there. Donna ended up having to request Phillipo leave all of her clients alone. It seems the salon uses a lot of underhanded tactics to get business.
